    Family Vacation

    We had a great time at the RIU Cancún. In fact we were having such a great time and decided to extend our stay and that’s when things went wrong. We booked directly thru RIU app and where offered free transportation. After we extended our stay and asked about moving our shuttle service to our new return date no one could help us. The shuttle service representative was no help . He said the RIU had to confirm that we where extending our stay and no one at the RIU knew how to do that. The only person at the front desk that was willing to help us was Sarah. Unfortunately she couldn’t get thru to anyone at Destinations ( shuttle service). In the mean time our extended stay was spent waiting around at the front desk for someone to give us an answer. One of the reasons we booked thru the RIU and not thru a third party is that if we have an problems RIU would handle it. Unfortunately this was not the case RIU front desk would send me to the representative of Destination and they would send me to the customer service front desk representative. This desk had a sign open from 10:00am-18:00 but was never manned. We waited the first morning for 25 min and no one showed. We then went to the front desk and was told they where busy and the person working that desk has to help check in. I don’t really understand why the RIU would have that desk if they do not have the staff to attend it. It took the RIU 2 days to resolve our shuttle issue. Spent a total of 4 hours waiting to get this fixed instead of enjoying my extended stay. I recommend that it you have a customer that would love to extend there stay to ask if they had a free shuttle and if so they would not be able to honor that since no one in RIU knows how to make it happen. The people from the shuttle service are at your hotel but the communication between RIU and the shuttle service is just not there. If it hadn’t been for this situation I would have given this RIU a 5 star rating. Sarah was the only person in the front desk that made this happen. Thank you to Sarah.

    My least favorite Riu resort

    We booked a last minute trip here to get away for a couple of days. The resort was nice. Kind of old but the views were nice. We were in a room on the 10th floor. The halls smelled like pee the entire time. The food was ok. The drinks were ok. No mimosas with breakfast was a bummer. There service is what I had an issue with. Everyone seemed like they had an attitude and were not very helpful. The only helpful server that we met was named Bacon. This is the first time I've ever had an issue like this at a RIU resort. I gave them the benefit of the doubt because of Covid but I will not be going back.

    RIU needs renovations.

    The rooms are disgusting. The first room smelled of cigarettes so they upgraded us to a suite. The toilet flooded out of the bathroom. We complained to the manager and her gave us a larger suite. The rooms were disgusting overall. The food is gross. The staff is very pleasant.

    Just Okay

    We stayed at the Riu Cancun on June 26-28. We booked a last minute cheap deal. We arrived at 10 am. They take your temperature as soon as you walk in. They tell you to download the hotel app and give you a mask. The app is used to request stuff in your room, restaurant menus, event schedules, etc. Check in took 20 minutes and we got our wrist band. We didn’t get our room until after 4 pm. When we finally got to the room there was no toilet paper or tissues. We had to use the app to request it. The rooms are loud. You hear everything in the hall. The blanket on the bed is very thin. If you request a blanket through the app they will bring you one. There is a weird frosted window in the shower, people in the bedroom can see your shadow while you shower. All the rooms all have an amazing ocean view. That was awesome. The beach is limited but the water is beautiful. There were plenty of restaurants and they were opening on a rotating schedule. There were 2-3 open at every meal. The food was decent. The steak house had a platter for 2 people to share that several kinds of meat. It was delicious. There is NOT a snack bar where you can eat at your lounge chair by the pool. You have to get dried off and put a cover up on to go to lunch. We have never stayed at an all inclusive that didn’t have a snack bar near the pool. Masks are worn in the lobby, restaurants until you are seated and anytime you go to a bar. The swim up bar is not open. There are waiters by the pool. There was games at the pool during the day. The nightly entertainment was not always what I’d advertised. They were supposed to have a Michael Jackson show on Friday but had bingo instead. The pool tables in the sports bar could not be used. We didn’t seek out any other nightly entertainment. We were fine with this hotel for our short weekend stay but we would not have been happy here if we were staying longer. Some of the staff was friendly and some just didn’t seem to want to help you. Many of our complaints were not about changes because coronavirus... they were just design flaws and poor customer service.

    View was good, food was meh, service was subpar. Hotel felt slightly outdated but very clean. Come for the cheap airfare and hotel deals, keep your expectations low and you'll have a good time. If you're not White, stay away.
