JW Marriott vs Solaz (Titanium Member)
We just came back from an 8-night stay in Cabo. We are Marriott Titanium and considered the JW Marriott, Westin, Sheraton, and Solaz. We decided to split our stay with 4 nights at JW Marriott followed by 4 nights at Solaz. This is a comparison review for both hotels which I hope helps other Marriott guests. Our stay was during the beginning of Covid-19 reopening. Elite Recognition: Doing research of all the Marriott properties, it appears based on reviews that the only properties that go above and beyond for Elites are Solaz and Sheraton, which we didn’t stay at. Before our trip, we received a nice email from Perla Vizcaino from Solaz to welcome us to our upcoming trip. This was a good sign that we would receive great service there. We didn’t receive anything from JW Marriott. JW Marriott: We knew from many reader reviews not to expect much from JW Marriott, but sadly, it just felt like they just dropped the ball at every opportunity. When checking in with our less than friendly front desk agent, she asked us if we were Marriott Reward members and that we should join. I showed her we were Titanium. She said OK. We knew not to expect much of a free breakfast at JW so we had to book a rate that covered breakfast. We used points for 2 nights so there wasn’t a breakfast option for those 2 nights which the front desk agent re-enforced. The hotel was a 6% occupancy due to covid. We received an upgraded to the 4th floor. Solaz: They upgraded us to a plunge pool room which was amazing. The cheapest rate during Covid included breakfast, but past reviews state that Elites get full breakfast here. Room service provided 2 bottles of water each day and our artisan said we could have more if needed. Location: JW Marriott is the most isolated of all hotels just east of San Jose Del Cabo. If you are not interested in leaving your hotel much or have transportation, then it won’t be much of an issue. We had to work from the hotel for 2 out of the 4 nights so the location wasn’t an issue. Solaz is located near the middle of the corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose Del Cabo. For most, this will be the better location easily. Of note, the resort is right on the highway and this may be an issue for some as the traffic can be heard from the resort at times. Our friend stayed at the building near the highway and the traffic noise wasn’t an issue. Rooms: Both hotel rooms are some of the nicest I have stayed at in my life. I would put both in the top 10 all time with over 700 nights logged at Marriott Properties. JW Marriott has an earth tone, dark theme which I found very relaxing. If you have to work while on vacation, this will be your better option of the 2 as there is a good size desk/working area in the room and there are several options across the resorts for you to plug your laptop and work. The rooms also had a nice tub. The room temperature was good but not great as we slept hot every night. The bed was good but a little bit on the hard side for me. Solaz has a similar earth tone vibe, but the colors are much brighter. If you need to work while on your trip, it will be much more difficult here as there was no area visible to work from. While I would rate JW Marriott a top 10 for me, Solaz was a top 5 for me. The bed and linens were some of the best. The bed had a pillow top mattress Food: Really, both resorts shined here, we didn’t have a bad meal at either resort. We visited during Covid-19 so food options were limited. JW Marriott had one of the best French Toast I ever had. Solaz was great everywhere too. They made most of their food items from scratch Covid-19/Cleanliness: Both resorts did an amazing job of keeping everything clean. I would say JW Marriott did a little bit more but nothing major. We felt safe and clean at both resorts. Service: Outside of the issues with Elite recognition at JW Marriott, both resorts did well with Solaz being the best service we have ever experienced at any Marriott property. You are assigned an artisan/butler to show you around the resort and help you with anything you need. Ours was Rodrigo and he went above and beyond for me and my family. Our friend’s artisan would bring him Red Bull drinks to him at the pool, they were only located in 1 areas of the hotel. Solaz left a little anniversary treat for us. It wasn’t technically our anniversary, but due to Covid, we had to push back our anniversary trip to Cabo. We found the employees at Solaz to be much happier/friendlier than at JW Marriott especially at the front desk. Final Thoughts: Both resorts are amazing and the architecture at both are tops. If elite benefits & recognition are important to you, Solaz was the clear winner for us and we can’t wait to go back.
Hotel has gone downhill
I’m so sad to write this review but since it’s opening, this hotel has declined in service, quality, and ambiance. We stayed over Memorial Day weekend 2019 and it was not the polished hotel it once was. To start, the biggest dbags ever had a wedding there that weekend. Priya and Johnny from LA, we don’t know them but their loud mouth friends made sure to loudly let everyone hear all about it. Truly the most self-centered group people I’ve ever encountered. A bunch of overweight actor wannabes from So Cal, barf. Not all of their guests were staying at the JW, but they all came to hang out at the JW adult pool anyway. We told security that non-guests were crowding the pool but they didn’t want to do anything about it. We could barely even find chairs. These people brought there own boom boxes and were playing their own music over the relaxing JW pool music. I talked to a manager and all they did was tell one guy to “turn it down.” We could still hear it, and we ended up leaving the adults pool for the kids pool, which doesn’t have as nice of a view. Really not cool. Also, the service was not friendly and was downright rude at the breakfast buffet area. Apparently a lot of their good employees left for better hotels that have since opened. They ended up giving us day passes to the Griffith club, but the pool was full of kids splashing around. The parents gave the kids water guns to shot around, as if staying in a private area of a resort wasn’t enough to please their soon to be d bag spawn. We will never stay at the JW again. They don’t enforce the rules, let non guests in to crowd out paying guests, and the rooms are all beat up now. Just sad.
Loved hotel and trip
Loved our stay at the JW. I am a big fan of JW's and this one didn't disappoint. It is a big hotel but when we were there it was not crowded. The service was very good and everyone was very friendly. The views are great and we spent most of our time at the adult pool. Restaurants were good and we went off property and had some great meals. You have to take a taxi from hotel but you can Uber back. All in all great trip and we will be back.
The resort is absolutely beautiful. The layout of the multiple pool areas is probably the best that I have ever encountered at a resort. The infinity pools in particular are beautiful, and even on busy days it never felt crowded. Julio Brenton spent a lot of time talking to us about everything Cabo had to offer, and went above and beyond to make sure that our experience was perfect in every way. He was a pleasure to work with. The rooms are large and very modern and the gym area was very nice. If you're looking for a classy and relaxing vacation then the JW in Cabo is the place to go.
Best place to spend an anniversary or, well,,,,,,, can I just stay everyday?????
At the end of 2 1/2 weeks in Cabo we stayed here for the last 3 days. I cannot applaud the staff enough at this resort. From the moment we drove up to the time they closed our car doors, the staff was excellent, courteous, always friendly, went beyond our expectations and made us feel so pampered. It's a vey clean, modern and quiet property with every amenity we could have asked for. Rosie was fabulous at check-in. So kind, knowledgeable and helped us choose to upgrade to the Griffin Wing where we had so many wonderful amenities including a butler! It was our 33rd wedding anniversary and let me just say, the butlers went above and beyond to set up our room for an amazing surprise! When we came back from the pool we had rose petals all over, balloons, chocolate covered strawberries, a wonderful bubble bath with orchids, towels formed into animals like on a cruise ship and notes congratulating us on our anniversary. What's not to fall in love with here? Spa, pools, food & drinks, beautiful views from each room, and warm smiles that make you feel at home. Cannot wait to go back! Gracias JW!!!! You all set the bar above a 10 in the Marriott portfolio.
