A beautiful place with friendly staff

This resort has beautiful grounds. You feel like you are in the jungle. There are animals all over the place. I enjoyed taking pictures of the animals. The staff is friendly and dedicated. The night time shows were good. The food was good with a lot of variety. There were lots of good fruit. You can tell they are putting a lot of effort to offer good food. The food is good but not the greatest. The biggest problem with the buffets is that the food is not always warm enough. My friend had a steak at one of the restaurants and it was not tender. I tasted her steak and it was not the highest quality meat. I find some of the restaurants never opened. I liked the food on the beech. The best food I ate was BBQs on the beech. I find the beech overcrowded and often there was no room to get some shade. You have to go very early in the day to get a shady place on the beech. I enjoyed the salsa band on the beech. The room was comfortable and clean. I did not like the mildew smell in the room. I wish there were more activities in the daytime when you have enough of the beech. We did not go to the activities outside the resort because it was way too expensive. For example, it would have cost for both of us $320 (can.) to visit xcaret for a few hours. My friend came to this place a few years ago and said it is not as good as before because of all the cutbacks they made (maybe to save money). As for myself, I enjoyed this place. I may come back if they don’t raise the prices too much.

    Great service

My family went to the Iberostar last week w our 2 year old grandson. We thoroughly enjoyed the stay. The chefs willingly made special vegetable dishes for the 2 year old who doesn't eat the more spiced dishes. As for myself, I really enjoyed their hot green sauces.

    A+ resort

Very good resort from A-Z rooms are a little old style but very clean. Pool entertainment is way above other resorts we visited. Food is good , there is nothing negative i can write we will be coming back . So many animals around. We visited 6 allinclusive resorts in 2019-2020 and Tucan is the best one and was not the most expensive.

    Perfect beach destination

Some of our group of 14 arrived Feb 28th for 9 days at the Iberostar Tucan, others arrived the next day and the next day. This was mine and my husband’s 7th time to this resort and 12th time to the Iberostar chain of hotels. It was everyone else’s first time. I won’t go into details about the layout of the resort, if you’re reading these reviews, you are pretty familiar with it. Check in- was smooth and painless. We were waited on by Esteban (Steven), who was a trainee. He was so polite and friendly and spoke perfect English. What a great addition to the Iberostar team. We were given a free “upgrade” to building 12 since we are repeat guests, and I emailed in advance. Most everyone else was put in building 19, directly at front of resort by the lobby. This was not acceptable as if was so far from beach/pool. We asked if they can also be put in building 12 since we were all travelling together, and the closet they can get was building 16. This is mid resort just after the buffet. It wasn’t a bad choice. Some paid $50/night for “upgrade” to building 12. These rooms never used to be “upgrades”, but now for some reason, they are charging extra for buildings closer to beach. The rooms were all the same, they were not suites. One couple we were with booked ocean front walk out rooms which were in building 10 and gorgeous rooms. Building 12 is my favorite to date. Rooms- were comfortable and cool. Fan worked great as well as air con. The bathrooms are pm the small side especially for 2 people to get ready in. Our rooms were cleaned spotless everyday with different towel animals each day. The first day the room still wasn’t cleaned at 1600 so I used my Iberostar app to ask housekeeping to clean our room first thing in the am, since we are out by 0700. Every day after that, our room was cleaned before 10am as we went back to room frequently to get stuff. We left the maid 50pesos a day and one day a blue tooth speaker. I think it’s time for Iberostar to spend a bit of money and refurbish the rooms. They are nice, but definitely needs freshening up. If you like big fluffy pillows, then you’d be in heaven. I could not sleep on them as I like flat pillows, so I asked for an extra blanket and used that, which was fine. The beds were very comfortable. A tad on the firm side, but perfect for us. Our fridge was stocked with plenty of beers, both Sol and Dois Equis. There is a new rule they tell you about at check in. There is absolutely no smoking on balconies or in rooms, or there is a $250 US fine. We don’t smoke. Smoking is allowed outside buildings and at beach and pool. Food- I made reservations via email before we got there and had no issues. We had a big group too. The only one we needed 2 separate tables was at the Italian. The food was overall very good. Buffet was amazing, especially for dinner. So many different foods and temp and taste was spot on. Very very disappointed in the Uxmal steak house. It used to be on the Quetzel side near pool, but that is now the Mexican. When it was over there, it was decorated like the wild west with displays of straw bales etc. There is no longer a blooming onion you get as you sit down. The food was not good in there at all. The meal is supposed to come with a potato and sour cream, but we were told “no sour cream, only cheese on top” Really?? Our waiter, I wish I remember his name, seemed like he could care less. This was the worst service we experienced. Quite a shame, because it used to be our favorite. The Bonsai Japanese also did not live up to what it was in the past. Food was just ok here. The cooking display lacked energy and the fun it used to be. The Mexican restaurant, we really loved. Food was amazing. So much, we couldn’t eat it all. The Italian was so-so. No salad bar, only antipasto and cheese bar. I had the carbonara, but all it was, was an alfredo sauce with pieces of bacon thrown in. The salmon was amazing here as was the red snapper. (Unless that was the Mediterranean, I can’t remember) Overall, I think I like the buffet best for dinner. The beach grill was good, as was the sit down beach restaurant. Burgers were thick and delicious. Soft self-serve ice cream was here. Every day on the beach, they cooked a specialty dish. One day paella, one day tacos, and other single dishes each day. Paella was Wednesday and Sunday. It goes fast, so get in line quick. Pool- Here’s where Iberostar really needs to do some work. Yes the pool is massive and nice, but it is showing its age. A lot of tiles need replacing. The pool is deep, yes, it’s about 5-3 in most areas. They really should put a pool bar in this main pool. Beside the Tucan beach restaurant, where the scuba trials are, is a perfect spot. It’s only just over waste deep here, and big enough so not to be crowded if there was a pool bar. The current pool bar is a bit of a waste. It’s at the end of the pool, where you have to leave the main pool and walk down about 10 steps into a separate pool. It’s ok to pop quickly to grab a drink, but it’s mostly shaded and water cooler than the main pool. It’s also known as the pee-pee pool as nobody every seems to leave it! Beach=-Saving the best for last. Perfection is all I have to say!! We spent every day, all day here. Sand is soft and cool. Water is gorgeous. Wavy all but 1 day, and no sargassum this week. Last year was very bad for the whole Caribbean, but this year was perfect. The only thing that bothers me is the amount of cigarette butts on the beach. Everywhere you look you’ll find butts. I just don’t get why smokers don’t bring their own little ash tray and throw away their butts. Otherwise, this is the most beautiful beach on the whole cost IMO. Staff- Amazing. A reason we have always returned. Victor the prestige concierge, (We weren’t personally prestige, but he treated us as we were since our friends signed up) (Victor, we are the big group of Canadians with Jeff and Sally and Ron and Kerri) Wave of Change- What a great concept taken on by the Iberostar Group. “It’s a pioneering initiative to reduce the use of plastics, to promote responsible consumption of seafood and improve coastal health” All straws are gone, all plastic water bottles are gone. The hand soap, shampoo, body wash, conditioner are all biodegradable in biodegradable refillable containers. There are 2 large glass water jugs/bottles in your room and each floor has water filling stations like they do in some airports. This is a major improvement. Kudos to Iberostar for caring for our environment. If you look at the wave of change website or iberostar group website, you can read all about it. Every resort group needs to do this and maybe it will make a difference. Star Prestige club- Every day we were there we came back to our room with a notice on our door saying to come to concierge to collect our $300 USD and learn about the resort. We knew what this was and were not interested. (At this time) 2 couples we traveled with though, went to the “tour” “breakfast meeting” and they were sold. They bought into it. From what they told us, they got an amazing deal, after about 6 hours. Yes, its high pressure sales, no, it’s not a timeshare, but it is a vacation club and from what we learned, it was worth it. (Maybe not the 6 hours) The prestige area on beach is kind of an eyesore for the shore, but let me tell you, the bar is phenomenal. Top shelf liquors and treat you like royalty. Our friends were upgraded to ocean front, but only for 2 nights, which I thought very strange. They said there were no rooms available until then, but we were supposed to upgrade to oceanfront but didn’t want to move, so yes, our upgraded room was available on that same day. If it was me, I would have pushed it, especially since I just shelled all that money and really didn’t get a prestige room for this trip. And again, Victor is an amazing person and IB is lucky they have him!! We had a fabulous time and would most definitely return. Love the Iberostar Tucan/Quetzel.
