Continually Amazed and exceeded our expectations
For perspective, we are UVC members and have travelled to Dreams/Secrets/Sunscape (and a few other brands) once or twice a year for the last 12 years. Our 4 nights at Dreams Las Mareas was really AMAZING!! First, the one glaring negative, this resort is 90 minutes away from the airport and the last 30 minutes of the ride is BRUTAL! The road is in terrible condition. ALSO, WE DID AMSTAR private transport round trip and it was VERY expensive. The UP SIDE, this resort is pretty secluded. There are a couple of other small resorts on the same bay. But for the most part, traffis is light and the beach is yours. Check-in was seemless and welcoming. Great first impression. The resort is really beautiful. Twisting paths through flowers and greens. Beautiful pools. Plentyful bar and food all day. We stayed in room 3410, garden view (see picture), main building. The room was large and clean and well appointed. The location turned out to be idea. Really nice view, close to the restaurants and coffee and the lobby. It was a little bit of a hike to the Preferred pool (our favorite). This Dreams feels like it is IN THE JUNGLE. The birds...the sounds...the monkeys...the flowers and plants and mountians...We found it all to be so relaxing and intereresting. All the plants DID lead to a lot of leaves floating int he pools but they work around the clock to keep them as clear as possible. The Beach is beautiful. Water is calm but cold. There are a few vendors but no one was too pushy. Service was excellent. The resort was well staffed and (almost) everyone seemed genuinely kind and welcoming. Pool drink service was excellent and drinks were well made. Service in the sit-down restaurants and breakfast buffet was really good. Our waiter, Alex, in the Seaside grill was our favorite waiter. He made a great impression. Very professional and knew his job well. We did have a below average dinner in Portofino one night...it just happened to be our anniversary dinner....but overall, great service. The food was generally at or slightly above expectation. In my opinion, the food at any Dreams/Secrets has never really been exceptional. But we found a few meals that were better than we expected. Seaside grill was probaly the best meal for food and service. I wish they would have had a night or a lunch that was traditional Costa Rican food. We took a walk into the wilderness with Kesley (activities). That was really fun but it dos require so degree of fitness. Kesley was really kind and knowledgeable and patient. We also did an excursion to the Sloth preserve that included a stop at a coffee/chocolate farm and a water fall (lunch included). Also required fitness....And another trip on the curvy, bumpy road. In fact, because of the distance away from everything, any excursion you take will be an all-day excursion due to the drive out and back. But the entertainment on site at night is pretty cool and they do have walks and kayaking from the beach and such. In summery, over our four night stay, my wife and I kept looking at each other and saying, "This place is really amazing". We rarely go to the same resort more than once...We would go back to Dreams Las Mareas in a heartbeat.

Definitely worth a visit
Lovely resort, friendly and helpful staff, delicious food, very nice pools. Beach was ok. Nice local hikes. Lots of wildlife. We had a rental car and visited nearby beaches and National Parks - worth doing. Liked the location that was a little more off the beaten path.

Paradise Awaits
This place is paradise. The restaurants are beautiful, declicious, and didn't require a reservation. The staff is kind and friendly. The beaches are amazing. There are several swimming pools and bars throughout the resort. I highly recommend. We went with couples but plan to return with the kids next time. The town is very safe, clean, and quaint.

So so
Average to below experience. Poor poolside service. Average food. Very much below average wine and alcohol choices. Ground were in good shape and the place was clean. We upgraded to preferred status and that wasn't worth it. Had power outages, although brief, three days and fire alarms went off two days

Great family vacation
I will try and go through the pros and cons. I will make this fair from someone who has travelled a lot and been to other dreams. The flight times with Air Transat are not family friendly as you arrive around 5.30pm then endless wait for luggage. 2 hour drive to resort in the dark with young hungry tired children not fun. Check in was very lack lustre. I usually expect a warm welcome cold drink and check in package all prepared. The lobby is blah. No direction as to where to check in and it’s behind closed doors. No prepared package just a photocopied map of resort. By time check in done restaurants were closing. We had a garden view room which is in building 5 facing the jungle. For family building 5 is great as most restaurants located there and close walk to main pool. Rooms are different as bathroom is open to room kind of odd for a family to share. Beds very comfortable and amenities in room are well done. If facing jungle there is no shortage of monkeys. They are gentle and very cute. Pools and ground are just beautiful. No shortage of chairs or umbrellas. Bar service at pool was excellent . Drinks were well made and tasty and high end alcohol like crown royal rye. There were lots of bars around pool area. There was almost no pool entertainment activity, usually there are pool games etc but not here. Beach was very nice and water crystal clean and no seaweed. A few vendors but if you say no they leave you alone. One major complaint for me was that there was no lobby bar that you could head to before dinner to have a drink or glass of wine. You can get wine at pool bar but in plastic glass not ideal. There is a piano bar but not open till 6 so if travelling with kids not open before dinner. Restaurants were very good. Tapanaki is as per usual. Himitsu was very good as was Gohan sushi well worth the visit. Seafood grill was good but had salmon and had to send back twice as not cooked through. Steakhouse was good as well but not overly fancy. Waiters are attentive, Isaac and Eladio were very good. Portofino was by far the best restaurant to visit. Coco cafe in morning for specialty coffees was awesome. Kids liked the ice cream. We were a group of 12 and the staff was excellent accommodating us. Overall great resort just a few short comings. Bad reviews about service I do not get as the staff was great except for check in,
