    A (mostly) excellent stay in Cancun at the Iberostar Selection Coral Level (with Star Prestige / The Club membership)

    The Iberostar Selection Cancun (we stayed at the Coral Level adults only tower) had some shining stars on staff, but definitely lacked the splendor, service, and consistency of staying at a Grand-level Iberostar (we had stayed previously at the Grand Bavaro in the Dominican Republic which was, admittedly, also a lot pricier!). Our favorite staff member by far was Alvin at the Beach Club (for Iberostar The Club Star Prestige Members). A close second for the superstar staff award was Luis (and Leo) at the swim up bar at the Coral Level pool as well as a few of the staff in the prestige lounge (Gerardo, Itjia, and the bartenders). We had two rooms (young adult daughter and significant other plus our room). Pro's: Gorgeous and spacious rooms (more below), the Coral Level Lobby Bar and Pool Bar made amazing drinks (and coffees in the lobby in the morning if we didn't want the short trek next door to the coffee shop at the Selection family resort). The Porterhouse at the Steak House restaurant was AMAZING (Chef Jose! Had us check for was a tad rare and we hesitated to have him take it back for more cook time, but he insisted and nailed it!! and that night the clam of my life), and I ate my weight in fresh guacamole everywhere we went (all the buffets, snack bars...). Other amazing bites of food tended to be the mexican dishes--Chilequiles every day on the buffets, churros, anything in adobo. Mexican cheeses and the pulled pork quesadillas at the food truck. Fresh mango cart by the pool with Tajin. Best spicy Palomas and Mojitos. And top-shelf liquors included with our Club membership were some of our favorites (Grey Goose Vodka, Don Julio 70, Johnny Walker Gold scotch, Tanqueray gin, and all sorts of Carribbean rums). The Coral Level had enough entertainment we never got bored (staff like Adrian, Pedro, Fernanda were good at getting us out of our beach chairs for a poolside game or bubble party), but not so much we didn't feel like we could just relax in the the abundant chairs or the infinity pool which had shade options all day long. FAVORITE was the club level beach area, though. Always a chair, but I'd try to get there are opening to get Alvin to set us up one or two of the shaded daybed-style spots. Bartenders there (Yuliztha, Israel) also made sure we had plenty of drinks (and bottles of water or sparkling water!), and Alvin made sure we never had an unanswered question or wanted for anything (including towels, shade, and their included giant dispensers of SPF 30 and 50 sunscreen--no sunburns!). We also enjoyed the breakfast area (at the Selection buffet) for club members. In addition to the other extensive offerings, we had a made-to-order option. Chef Angel made a very good eggs benedict and fresh orders of chilequiles with eggs cooked to order (or chicken). The Coral Level buffet was smaller, but many of the same dishes. And sometimes a notch up (e.g. fancier prep, more seafood, etc.). Con's: Food (and drink) was pretty inconsistent. Even specifically described menu items (food or drinks) that were purportedly identical at different locations might be totally differently made (and room service was pretty awful quality and usually not what we ordered). We didn't expect Grand level food--but we were a bit disappointed in some of it. (The Italian restaurant, especially. Small portions of undercooked pasta with sauces that were quite lacking, for instance.) We enjoyed the steakhouse, but the second time we ate there, the favorites from two nights before were totally different cook and quality. While some of the pastries were to die for (chocolate croissant and a pistachio bun of all things!), other's were quite awful. We learned what we loved and kept going back--the beauty of the all-inclusive. Service was also very good overall, but some definite gaps. Example: we had bottle service for our room, and by the end of the week, our second room had never gotten what they requested. Other things they didn't, but not the one they did. Their room also had some temp control issues, and we had to ask 4 days in a row to get it fixed. We had made reservations for the Hibachi Japanese restaurant (in fact, the concierge in the club lounge had made them), and they lost them the first night completely which sent us looking for food at 8 pm (thankfully buffet was still open). They did remake them for another night, so it worked out. And we often found we got inconsistent information (e.g. where we could use our club benefits for nicer drinks, what time things were open, when the theme nights were at the buffets so we could decide where/when to eat, etc.). Also, included wines were mostly not great, so we didn't drink much of that during the week. And the 830 am calls from the sales rep about upgrading our membership were also a bit much on vacation. (She was lovely one we met with her...but early calls.) The beach was also a bit seaweed covered. They raked some, but it definitely piled up faster than they could tackle it. No smell, Just quite a bit in the water their (not their fault). Also a pretty quick drop off there, so we didn't spend a lot of time IN the ocean. We also hit a pretty windy week, so waves were a bit big and some water activities cancelled. But still lovely at the pool or beach club--and made the temps feel great. Spa was nice--our included swedish massages were lovely. The Pelicans fishing right there were SO cool as were the Magnificent Frigatebirds that soared over the property all day. Just enough to do on property (beach volleyball, poolside games, entertainment in the evening), but the youngers went into town on the bus a couple times. Very easy, cheap, and safe. We did one excursion--we only wanted a cenote and Tulum, and since there were four of us, the W2M desk was able to arrange a private transport/guide for much less than had I booked it beforehand. It was a LONG drive, but closer than Chichen Itza (and less hot since it was on the beach). The young adults also really enjoyed the sports bar at the Selection late at night, playing pool and hanging out with the younger crowd. Live entertainment was fun--singers and musicians were great! Coral Level overall was lovely--and close to the regular selection (5-10 minutes down the path), so it wasn't a bother to go to the other pool if we wanted (we rarely did) or the restaurants/club lounge. Rooms had nespresso coffee makers with compostable pods, reasonable toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, body wash were fine). We also asked to have our thermostat lowered (and it happened immediately). View of the ocean was incredible (we were on the 8th floor which helped), and you could also see it from the shower if you wanted. Balcony tub was really neat--but took some gymnastics to get in without flashing the beach club. Linens were nice, rooms were well-cleaned, fridge well-stocked with sodas and beers (which we don't drink) and wines (the white was decent). Room Key on the bracelet was AWESOME. No need to tuck a key card anywhere or worry about forgetting it! Ample filtered water in glass bottles in the room daily and little (unbreakable) bottles by the pool and beach. Overall, we were quite happy with the week, but we are considering a Grand again next time.

    Beautiful resort

    This is an amazing resort! Our room was cleaned and checked at least 3 times each day. Our concierge, Nadia, was the best! She was so attentive and remembered our names/story each time she saw us. We also want to send a shout out to Jesus in LA Parilla-best wait staff ever!

    Feeling Like Home & Being With Family

    This is going to be a long one, so I apologize ahead of time. My husband and I got married on the Selection side 7 years ago while the Coral Level was under construction. We come back every year to celebrate our anniversary. For the past 6 years we have been been treated like royalty on the Coral Level side with the rooftop corner suite! Every single year the service gets better and better. We are treated like family and feel like we are home every year that we come. Our hotel arrangements and requests are handled with such ease that we never have to worry. We definitely have to give a BIG thank you to Abraham Lara for his years of helping us obtain our favorite room. Abraham is no longer there, so this year we had the pleasure of working with Luis Ortega. Again, HUGE thank you to Luis! He had everything ready to go and made sure the staff knew who we were and that we had everything we could possible need, want, and more. We were also assigned a personal assistant to ensure our stay was top notch! Her name was Heylli and she was absolutely amazing. The sweetest young woman who always ensured our stay was perfect the entire week we were there and always checked up on us. The lobby bar drinks were fantastic! That was especially thanks to Irma. If you ask us, she was the most personable bartender we had and was very passionate about the drinks she served. Best drinks by far! Glendy made sure our room was perfect and beautiful everyday and every night. She always made sure to greet us every morning too when we were on our way down to breakfast. Over the years, the hotel has tried to improve the food service and I have to say, we truly love the changes they have made this year, by far! We tried the Mexican Fiesta night, Seafood Night, BBQ night, and the Brazilian Steakhouse night. My husband and I absolutely loved the seafood night so much that we did it twice the week of our stay. Absolutely delicious! Jesus the manager, Nancy, and Esmerelda always made sure we had excellent food, seats, drinks, and service! They really took care of us and made sure our anniversary was celebrated with beautiful desserts after our meals. My husband and I continue to come back for a reason. The service is top of the line. The staff is so friendly and always willing to accommodate. They always put the guest first and treat us like family. Why would we go anywhere else. To the staff members who read this: Thank you! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for always taking care of us and making us feel right at home. Until next year.... :)

    Irma @ La Terraza Lobby Bar is an amazing bartender! She has GREAT customer service, she remembers our names and our drinks! Also, she makes delicious Pina Colada’s , other bars don’t make them well, we will walk out of our way to have Irma make them!
