    Spoiled at Coral Level

First time to this resort. Have been to the Iberostar in Riviera Maya many times as well as many other all inclusive resorts. The service here is the best we have ever received in more than 30 AI vacations. Food: We had access to all restaurants in the complex except at the Grand. Buffets were available for breakfast, lunch and dinner. had a fair selection. We only went for breakfast and lunch. Most items were good and some were excellent! The negatives for the buffets is that food rarely kept hot. Had some roasted potatoes that were refrigerator cold. Lots of daily repetition. We did try the buffets at Coral and Selection area. The Sit down restaurants we tried were all very good. Everything was served hot! We only had to make one reservation for the steak house. All others are first come first serve. This is a recent change for the resort. Used to be all sit down restaurants needed reservations. There was a beach barbeque set up one say. It smelled so good for over an hour while they prepped and cooked. When I got a steak it was completely raw. The edge I tasted was delicious. Some restaurants do not have air conditioning and can be quite warm. We were sweating through our dinner at Salt and Soul. The ones that do have air can't seem to keep cool. Room: We had a 2nd floor room with a view of the coral lobby and street with little stores on it. Air conditioning worked fine. When we arrived the bed was decorated with flowers and there was a beach bag with beach towels in it for us to use. There were snacks on the counter and drinks in the fridge. Housecleaning was hit or miss. One night they came to clean the room as we were getting ready to go to be. I requested that our room be cleaned any time between 10am and 2. But that only happened once. There were 2 days no one came. When it was done it was done nicely. There were robes and flip flops for our use. Beach: Gorgeous!! I loved that with being in the Coral Level the beach chairs were spread out. It was very peaceful. We had more space that the seats at the Grand Section. The sunrise was beautiful as well. Be careful in the early morning to protect yourself from the sand fleas - the bites itch horribly. It is a nice long beach for walking. The sand is soft and there is no need for water shoes. Pools: We only used the infinity pool. The temperature was great and the bar was close by. There were lots of kids though. There was always music playing around the pool. The Star friend would start playing music for stretching, yoga and pool activities around 10am. Hearing both at the same time was not ideal. The speakers could be turned off while other music playing. Some days drink stations would be set up that would serve a special drink of the day (both with or without alcohol) Service: Like I said, the best we have ever received. Sometimes communication is a struggle with the language barrier, but someone would always try to help.

    A tale of two cities

We just returned from a week stay at the coral level in bavaro. I titled the review a tale of two cities for the following reasons. First, let's get the negative out first. 1. The service in several of the returants was sub par. No greeting by the server, long waits for the sever, lack of follow up to make sure happy, disorganized. 2. Minor - the wet bar in the room was frequently not filled back up and required calls which took several hours to fulfill. 3. Language barrier - a lot if not most of the staff did not speak English and made it hard to converse. 4. Room air conditioning - the room was cool at the lowest setting but not cold. The room also had a small level of humidity which at times made it uncomfortable but not terrible. 5. Excursions desk - beware, there are two companies selling Excursions on site. Amstar is the company you want as the other isn't as good. To find the Amstar rep, you need to ask where he is at as there is no desk. The person sits at a random table in the theater. The cost is a little more but worth the difference. We made an error using the other company. The Excursion was alright but not great ( another review). 6. Food - to men this wasn't a huge issue as I found most of the food very good quality and taste. However, you got to go in knowing it's not in America and isn't going to be exact. If you are picky, you probably will have issue. For example, the beef is a bit different texture and taste but close. You will be fine if not over critical on small difference. 6b. Reservations - the resort says no reservations are needed. However, in some cases you should make one. We tried to eat at the steakhouse without a reservation one night at 8pm and was told Tyr wait was 1.5 hours. 7. Pool cocktail service - usually only one person doing the pool and ocean seating which made for slow service. On occasion there where 2 servers but was the exception. 8. Cocktails - the resort isn't well versed on how to make classic cocktails such as a old fashioned or drinks on their own menu. In a lot of cases (which some of you will appreciate) they over poured which made the drink taste like per alcohol. Now the positive. 1. The people (for the most part) - The people work very hard to ensure you have a great vacation. Most are very friendly on the resort grounds and have infectious smiles when greeting you. 2. A few of the restaurants had great service (the coral level buffet along with salt and soul). 3. Room cleaning - our room was kept very clean and tidy by a kind soul named Esperanza. It was my birthday and made me a cake buildt out of towels and fresh flower peddles. Amazing. If you see Esperanza at the resort (coral level side) , be sure to meet her and get a hug. 4. Resort - very will takin care of. Very clean, beautiful landscapes, walkways, views. 5. Food - I am not picky and found the food to be very good. 6. The coral level pool - outstanding views of the ocean from within, perfect temperature water, and fun activities such as dancing lessons and exercise classes. 7. The pool lounge chairs - very comfy. 8. The room quality - the room was well appointed, great bathroom with nice rain head shower. Our unit (2358) also had a perfect view of the ocean. 9. Entertainment- very good. We saw a show that had a mix of different American songs sang by a talent 6 person group (Abba, queen, etc.) . There was a saxophone player at the coral pool which was excellent. As mentioned at the beginning, it was a tale of two cities. The city of positives definitely out weighed the negative. Would I go back? Yes, if given the opportunity, I would certainly go back. No matter how much research done, you will find no resort is perfect. The value of this resort is exceptional and highly recommend.

It's a lovely place but not sure it's really worth the extra money. The rooms were great but the coffee pot in the room not so much. I'm one of those that has to have a GOOD cup of coffee in the morning, so the decaf pods of Nespresso (weak) coffee, didn't cut it. The refrigerator is really just a wine cooler. Doesn't really chill anything at all. AC was great and bed was very comfy. The food.... let's talk about the food... Major disappointment. You're given an "exclusive" place for breakfast and lunch. Too bad everything, and I do mean everything, was cold. Our last day there, half our crew went to the main dining room for breakfast and I was told it was 100% better. I didn't go myself, but considering how unappealing breakfast was at the "exclusive" restaurant, 100% could be saying a lot, or nothing at all! The beach is beautiful and really there were plenty of loungers to go around. Funny but half-way thru the trip, there was a note under the door indicating that the hotel would enforce the "no saving loungers" rule at the beach. They didn't. There are a LOT of hard working and very nice employees at this hotel and they really do go above and beyond. There were a couple bad apples, but you figure that out quick and avoid them. Not a lot of activity during the day and the evening entertainment was about non-existent. There was a kiddie show most days. Out of our 8 days, the kids had the same show 5 times. Check out was the most efficient check out EVER! We need a taxi to the airport. Told the gentleman at the front desk the day before. They had a golf cart outside our door an hour early, to take us to main reception where our taxi was already waiting. All in all, we enjoyed it because (1) we were at the beach, (2) the staff was great, (3) we were on vacation so we didn't really care. Would we go back? If the price went down, most certainly.
