I would go again BUT...

Overall, the resort was great! However, the room wasn’t ready by 3:00 as promised. It was ready shortly after, but the front desk was highly annoyed when we kept checking. We had a child wanting to hit the pools. No excuse for room to not be ready. We had arrived earlier in day and checked in. They knew we were waiting after lunch. No one showed us to room and I had to go get someone for help as no guidance where to go. When we got to room, the lounge chair on patio was broke, the glass for table missing, screen door broke, and closet door wouldn’t stay shut. They did quickly fix these issues, but to be waiting on a room, one would think it would be in excellent condition when we arrived. The pools were stunning and the ocean/beach amazing! Even saw some rays right at the shoreline! Kids’ pool area and bar is adorable! Our little girl loved. Staff is helpful besides front desk. The food is just so-so in the buffet for lunch and dinner. Breakfast is very good though. The other restaurants are great for dinner. The massage at the spa was wonderful, but a pain to have to be let in unless saying on that side of resort. They need to adjust that situation or have someone at door to always let someone in. It was disappointing on the last full day they were filming commercials and the kids’ pool was closed almost all day. That was ridiculous. It should have been 2-3 hours at max. Oh and the rooms need a bottle opener or bring your own!

I would go again BUT... I would go again BUT...

Beautiful Beach - Not the Best Deal

We didn't know where we were going because we chose the Deal of the Day. Disappointed when I read the reviews of the resort, but went with an open mind because it was our first-time and figured others may have been speaking out of experiences we didn't have. The resort is very large and very beautiful. The layout is nice, the pools are kept clean and the staff is pleasant. The beach is AMAZING! They keep their portion very clean and the sand is wonderful. Because there are reefs close to shore, you can even go snorkeling right there. But, even if you are just standing on the sandy part, in the water, you may even be met by some reef fish, as I was. It was truly an amazing experience for me. They do have activities planned all day long, which we did not have time to participate in, but they looked fun. I would really have liked to take advantage of the Spanish classes they offer in the mornings, but were not aware of them until our second day and we happened to walk past the end of one. We had our excursions planned already, so were unable to join. We ate at each of the restaurants, except the one in the main lobby. The food was great! The main complaint we have is that the housekeeping did not seem to know what coffee was. There was a coffee maker in our room, but no coffee. We asked five times in 3 days. We finally gave up. They did bring us some, finally, and when we asked for regular (written in Spanish), they left us Decaf. It was frustrating. Also, there are critters that get into the rooms, especially if you are on the outskirts, like where we were put, so don't get freaked out if you find a spider, gecko, or mosquitoes in your room. Right outside our room was a stagnant marsh, so major breeding ground for the mosquitoes. Still, it could have been worse! I'm sure they do some kind of abatement because I only ended up with 4-5 bites from them. That's not many considering the marsh on the property and we were there for 5 days. Would I go back? Perhaps, but I would definitely do things differently, especially in booking my room.

So Much for Your Money!

Infinity pool bar first to be seen when you walk out of the lobby! Beautiful beach with beds and chairs and palms to the right then a short stroll to another bar with two hot tubs and and and so much beauty! Staff is amazing, drinks were plentiful, and I am now a Chilean Chardonnay drinker as they did not have my wine of choice Pinot Grigio! No snorkeling gear needed as you walk in and are greeted with cast of Nemo! A little overwhelming first and I need to yelp and quickly return to shore but got brave and returned and glad I did! Then there is the spa and plunge pools rooftop style! Our 24th anniversary was certainly celebrated! My only suggestion is of course including Pinot Grigio and more rest sunsets like Portifino to choose from. Excellent all around and I would definitely return. The long drive from the airport was not welcomed initially but what was waiting when we arrived was well worth the drive! Thank you Deal of Fortune!

BewareTheShenanigans

Let me preface this review with….the resort is average….with above average food! Definitely not 4 stars….Shame on whomever is touting it as such. THE BAD:::: 1) Front desk staff are not at all interested and/or versed in the “service industry”. See events below regarding my “check-in” experience. 2) VIP people are all about getting you to “upgrade” to the Sun Club….make sure they show you around to see if you actually WANT the so-called “upgrades”. Not worth it! 3) The front desk tells you that , “we don’t restock your mini bar daily….just water”. UMMMMMMM nope, try again, it is on your website and in the information book in the room that it is restocked daily as part of the normal “unlimited fun” reservation (which is the normal reservation, not Sun Club). 4) There is NO pool or beach service. Get up and get it yourself. Oh and BTW, there is only 1 bartender at any of the bars, so make sure you wear your shoes to stand in line on the hot sidewalk and don’t wait until your glass is empty. 5) No reservations at the restaurants means wait in line. The longest wait was only about 45-50 minutes, but just be prepared. 6) They routinely shut down one of the restaurants with no warning. 7) A lot of cosmetic things around the resort are an eyesore (cracked toilets, broken hinges on doors, ripped screens etc..etc). 8) The breakfast and lunch buffets routinely ran out of multiple items. They did replace them, but I’m guessing due to their understaffing, it took awhile, so be patient. 9) Observed a lot of locals there on “day passes”. Not a huge deal as far as I was concerned, but definitely made for longer waits and running out of food during breakfast and lunch, again, I contribute that to their staffing. 10) Resort transportation is DOUBLE what it would cost for you to get a Private Suburban!! Make sure you check around!!! 11) The wait staff is still learning….they will forget to offer you coffee with dessert, etc, etc….But will get it straight away if you ask! 12) The waitstaff has apparently been told you can only have 2 drinks with dinner…….you will need to insist on more if you want more, even if it’s just soda. 13) Nothing within walking distance of the resort and the price of cab is atrocious. Plan to do a tour or stay on the resort unless you want to pay exorbitant cab fares (like $90 for a 10 minute ride) 14) they make you take about a 10 minute survey on a tablet before they will allow you to checkout. THE GOOD:::::: 1) The food was really quite good. Unless you are a SunClub member, there is only the buffet for breakfast and lunch, and the selection did not waiver… but there was a lot of variety and something for everyone, including someone to cook made to order eggs/omelets at breakfast and hamburgers, chicken, pork fillets at lunch. 2) All of the restaurant staff work their butts off! They are constantly moving. You can tell that they are very understaffed, as you would see the same waiters for every meal, and the single bartender at every bar. They will do anything possible to give you what you want during meal times, just ask! 3) The Vanilla Ice Cream……ASK FOR IT at the restaurants!! It’s amazing!! Tastes like cake batter….thanks for the other person’s review that let us know about it!!! 4) The beach…..beautiful right in front of the resort, but rocky and not passable on either side for you to actually walk up and down the beach, other than in front of the resort. There are plenty of palapas, chairs and even some daybeds at the beach. Plenty of towels at each pool and at the beach. 5) Nobody walking the beach trying to sell you things. 6) The beds were firm and comfortable as were the linens. You have about 3 choices of pillows (thickness, firmness etc.) so something for everyone. 7) You can adjust the A/C in your room yourself…..huge perk!! CHECK IN DISASTER: Buyer Beware! Arrival at 2pm. We were told “ Check-in is not until 3pm, and there are no rooms with 2 double beds but maybe we will have one tomorrow or the next day when people check out”. We were given a room key and sent to the bar with instruction to “return to the desk at 3pm to have it keyed for your entry”. So we did. At 3pm, we were told “the room is not ready yet, check back in 20-30 min”. So we did. At 3:30, we returned once again to the desk and were escorted to our “room”. It was a subterranean nightmare! It was underground except for the top ½ of the frosted plastic “window” at the ceiling level of the wall. It smelled so musty/mildew that there was no way any creature who needs to breath fresh air could stay there, and there was no safe in the room. So, I went back to the desk to speak my concerns. I was told “there are no other rooms, we will send housekeeping to help”. So I went back to the room and left the door open to try to air it out. Sometime around 4:30pm, and still no housekeeping. The musty smell has now triggered an asthma attack, so back out to the desk I go. I’m told “housekeeping will be coming, there are no other rooms”. So, we sit down in the lobby to wait as there is no way an asthmatic can go back into that room. I am approached by a VIP person, who asks me if I need anything since he has noticed us sitting in the lobby for awhile. I voice my current concerns, as well as letting him know that I had attempted to contact the hotel via email 3x prior to the trip about upgrading and received no response. He apologizes for the room situation and says they definitely have rooms for an upgrade to the Sun Club…..at $50/night for pool view and $80/night for ocean view in addition to the other SunClub perks, which I declined since I have no wish to be confined to the rooftop under canopies with pools, jacuzzi’s, splash pools, lounge chairs, and daybeds all crammed into a small space. I go back to wait in the lobby for housekeeping. Around 5:30, still no housekeeping and no other room given, I go back up to the desk. I am again told there are no other rooms and housekeeping would be coming. I verbalize that there ARE other rooms because the VIP guy wanted to charge me $50-80/night for them. I was told “your reservation was ROH which means that you got the last room we had for that”!! Seriously?? I informed her that while my initial reservation was ROH, my CONFIRMATION email stated it had a “deluxe tropical view room” and pull it up on my phone email. She stated that that is not what is in their system and they have no other rooms. I reiterate that there ARE rooms, I don’t need the extra “Sun Club” perks, please just give me a room!! I cannot stay in the musty room due to asthma, and I’m told that they may find one after someone else leaves around 8pm. I return to my chair in the lobby. Around 6pm, I speak with the AMResorts person at their desk in the lobby and voice all of the above concerns, stressing the fact that there ARE rooms that they are trying to charge me for and I am not even being given the room that I have confirmation for. She is not sure if she can help me since I didn’t use the resort transportation, but she will speak with the desk manager. She suggests we change and go have dinner or enjoy the pool while she does so; however, since we don’t have a room to change in, not sure how that’s supposed to happen?? To which she has no answer. Around 7pm, we are finally shown to a room that has 2 double beds, a tropical view, is not underground and reeking of must/mildew, and has a safe. It only took 5 hours and a lot of persistence and my being adamant that there WERE rooms, and I was not paying for their Sun Club upgrade. Shout out to all of the waitstaff, cooks, bartenders! They are to be commended! Especially Angel at the breakfast buffet, and I can’t say enough about Ricardo, the Assistant Manager for Food Services! He was constantly working right alongside his waitstaff and made special attempts to remember you! All in all, this is maybe a 3 star resort for location and restaurants. If they get staffing up to par and on board with what they actually offer on the website, as well as make some repairs, it may be much better in the future.
