Picture this: white boxy, clean architecture that rises before you. Behind you, a purr of waves - pure aqua, crystal clear water that is hugged by pillowy, perfect sand. The temperature is a perfect 72 degrees. Then, as you turn around to take in this view of heaven, you feel a soft breeze. Time to hit the beach? The bar? The spa? Seems every choice is better than the next. What to do? Nothing. It'll all be here tomorrow.

Not for us
This is a nice resort for a crowd that is truly looking for a quite trip. We are in our 30s and felt that we were the youngest ones there. Our rooms were nice and room service/butlers were great. The property and some of the soft goods in the room were worn. There were unattractive tarps on the roofs of buildings with straw roofs. The food and service was excellent but the mixed drinks were never good. We re-ordered several drinks but were never really satisfied. The pools and beach were quiet so we listened to our own music. The beach had so much seaweed you couldn’t walk into the ocean. It was piled about 6 feet wide by 4 feet tall the entire length of the resort’s beach. We ran the beach most mornings and the other resorts had little to no seaweed. The night entertainment was definitely geared towards the older crowd too.
I vacationed with a group of 15 for Super Bowl weekend. The resort was great. The staff is so friendly and accommodating. They had top shelf liquor, including Bud Light and Corona, so my husband was very happy..The food was very good. The spa was awesome! The only one thing was, the beachhad a lot of seaweed, but they were constantly keeping up with keeping it clean. Overall it was wonderful and would go back again!
Went with a party of 10 including my wife and I this time,as we had been a few years before just the two of us. Disappointed in the condition of the resort. There were leaking roofs in the main lobby area and the floors throughout the resort were extremely slippery. The rain seemed to really take a tool on the inside of the resort which was a bit u expected. However the staff worked hard to fix to address these issues and no one can control Mother Nature. Poolside service and outside bar services were great. However extremely disappointed with the food selection. The hibachi was closed on a Saturday night and we were turned away from one restaurant unless we could com out to being quiet. The seafood restaurant had the same menu as the world cafe which was also very disappointing. We made the best of the long weekend though and being with good friends certainly helped. However I would not recommend this specific secrets resort. All past experiences with secrets resorts have been nothing but positive but Secrets Silversands did not compare in the slightest in terms of quality

Great but needs Updates
This was my first time in Mexico and also at an all-inclusive. I think the resort is beautiful, however it is most definitely dated. Our suite, which we upgrade to, was a swim up, but the sun never faced our side so it was pointless. The ceilings are bumpy and old and caked with layers of paint, our counters had ants on them and were dusty. We called room service and translated the issue, but the sink area just always seemed to get really dusty. The lighting is the WORST. There were about 3 lights in the entire suite, it was so dark that you couldn't even use the mirror in the "living" area. The food is great though you get tired of it after a while, even though they do have different "restaurants." The escargot in the French restaurant is phenomenal. Yes, the beach is super teeny so if you want to get beachy, go somewhere else. The seaweed on the beach is quite ridiculous and the seaweed cleaner doesn't come by as often as it should. And when it does come, it barely picks up any of it. The staff are phenomenal! Can't speak enough of their great service. I also forgot my medication and was able to have it delivered to my hotel room from a local pharmacy which was an amazing convenience. Overall, i would stay here again, but in a "luxury suite." Also, the staff try to sell you on visiting Breathless that's a few minutes away. It's brand new and luxurious and young. When my bf and I walked the beach, we saw that they were having a foam party in the pool! And they had house music playing and dancers from Coco Bongo. This was during the day! We'll definitely go here before we return to Silver sands.

Can you swim at the beach? Is it rocky?12 answers
7 years, 95 months ago
Sam I am
Yes, you can, although they warn you not to because the waves are rough and big. They can be, but if you're from the beach, they aren't bad at all.
JessN
No, you cannot swim by the beach (unless you have aqua socks). It is far too rocky and has too much coral - very few spots are just sand.
TheHoneymooners
No... this is not a swimming beach......Rocks everywhere and the water really isn't the pretty water we were looking for........
slick1532
The water is shallow. Not good for swimming.
NeedaVaction
You can but the water is dirty and very rocky. I woudn't recommend do so at the resort we stayed at. Texas beaches are better. We did visit resorts closer to Cancun where the beaches were beautiful and perfect.
red10
You can swim at the beach, but I didn't see a lot of people doing that and the beach is rocky.
DonO
The water is very shallow to approximately 100 yards out. It's not rocky, but there's a good deal of seaweed on the floor there. The water is nice and clear too.
Dinks6
really can't swim on the beach, very rocky and painful to step on the coral and lotsa seaweed too.
Nasri
no...you cannot swim at this beach. you must take a walk to the South for about 1/2 a mile past a dog that might bite your head off unless you are willing to sink you body into the disgusting water in front of the house that has this dog...avoid this resort..see my review.
more00sunplease
Rocky, but you can swim if you take your time getting in.
JeffB32
You can definitely swim at the beach, you just need to go out beyond the first 15 feet, because there is some seaweed by the coast and some rocks. But, you can go out for a long way before you reach neck deep.
SilentButDeadly
We didn't go to the beach, really. I don't think it's really a beach for swimming. The pools were great, though. The beach was actually the only common complaint I overheard. (I really didn't hear any other complaints)

What is a swim-out room?11 answers
Literary, step out onto the patio and step off into pool?
7 years, 94 months ago
Mike
Most of these swim-out rooms have a bit of lawn in-between the patio and the actual pool, so you can pull out your chairs and get some sun on the lawn in front of your room...see attached picture
NHMATraveler
I have seen other resorts' swim outs to be the pool water coming up into your staircase out of the patio so you can simply step into the water from your patio. But here at Secrets Siilversands, the swim out rooms are like this - room, patio, then a foot of lawn, then the edge of the pool.
AvidVacationers
there is a small grassy area between the patio and the pool, maybe 5'...but the pools are very close for the bottom floor, swim out rooms
sunnymo
HI MIKE, A SWIM OUR ROOM IS A ROOM WITH A POOL DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE SLIDING GLASS DOOR TO YOUR ROOM.T HEY ARE VERY CONVENIENT. STEP ONTO THE PATIO AND THEN RIGHT IN THE POOL. ENJOY....
nursemade
Yes, if you have a room on the first floor. All first floor rooms have a patio that is in front of the pool. Downside, there is no privacy for a first floor patio. All rooms above the ground floor have porches that are private.
tttt
Maybe 2 feet of grass between your patio and the pool
Micah741
It is a ground floor room, you walk out and within a few feet there is a pool. Not very private....
Catherinek25
No, the "swim out" rooms are a total waste of money. There is a lot of grass to walk on before you get to the pool from the room, and to be honest, advertising it as a swim out is just a lie. It's not like the Sandals resorts, those really are made to where you can walk out of your room into the pool. Also, if you stay in building 6, you can see the ocean from the room. Try one of those. Also, if you are interested in scuba/snorkleing, the beach here is the worst I have ever seen. Our main reason for going was to enjoy swimming in the ocean, and we were not able to do that at all becasue of all the rocks.
vjobe413
Yep... you walk out and within 20 seconds... BOOM... you're in a pool.
SukiMySuki
There might be 5-15 ft. of grass in between depending on where your room is.
braveopenseas
A room facing the pool areas. Generally there is a small grassy area in between the room and pool for privacy. Very convenient since most come with beach chairs right in front.
laurenalopez
There is about 6 feet of grass between the patio and the pool.

do you need reservations for the restaurants?11 answers
We are planning on going for 4 nights. Just wanted to make sure we would not run into any problems with dining on the resort.
7 years, 85 months ago
melrose
The Secrets Resorts do not require dinner reservations at any of their restaurants.
MeganCC
You do not have to make reservations at any of the restaurants, with the exception of the Hibachi grill at Himitsu Restaurant. They do offer regular dining, though, as well. Just make sure to check out the dress codes as we did see a few couples get turned away for their shorts. (side note: the website said that some restaurants require "formal" attire, but none did while we were there....just "casual elegance"! Just so you aren't too overdressed like we were one night!!)
frostygirl
Dining was incredible. I would call to find out which restaurants are open when you go though. You need reservations for Himachi only if you want to eat Hibachi style otherwise we didn't need any for any restaurants. If you like sushi then you definitely want to go when Himachi is open. The rolls and the sashami was amazing!
The Fench restaurant was also very good along with Rata Touiolle.
We didn't eat at the steak place but heard it was very good. I am very critical when it comes to food and this place did not dissapoint.
zspeed95
You just need a reservation in the Hibachi resturant. All others are first come first serve and normally no wait. We had 85 percent occupation last week while we were there.
MSPHST
The only restaurant you will need to make a reservation for is Himitsu. A reservation is only required if you want to sit at a habachi table. You can just walk in and sit at a regular table without a reservation. Be advised that men must wear collared shirts and pants for dinner.
ispwife
no, they don't take any reservations at the restaurant but the wait usually wasn't long. I found that if i didn't want to wait for one restaurant, i'd go next door and find one that was seating right away. Suggestion, stay indoors for dinner. The restaurants outdoor are better off as lunch options.
JohnD
Oh, you may have already enjoyed your visit!
Then you've found out, only one restaurant needs reservations, the Hibatchi. You've had lots of options each night. Hope you enjoyed!!
jennybuttah
NO! Which is why we picked this resort. If you go and they don't have a table open, they will give you a "buzzer" just like if you went to a nice restaurant in the US. We only had that happen twice. We went to the lobby bar to get a drink and had a table within 10-15mins.
LinnyHoff
You only have to have reservations for the hibatchi.
Supersleeves
No, you do not need reservations. The only thing you have to reserve is habatchi (sp?) the day of in the Japanese restaurant.
ThinkPink
Of all the restaurants you need reservations for only one of them. This is the Japanese restaurant, and you only need reservations if you want to sit at the Benny Hana style table where they do the knife flipping and special food presentation. You have to book this table the same day you want to do it, and it's first come first serve. So if you want to eat at it at a reasonable time make sure to be at concierge the morning of at 7 a.m. right when they open up.

Anyone know spa prices?9 answers

NYC
Upon reviewing the resort's website for their spa, https://www.secretsresorts.com/silversands/spa.asp, it does not appear that they list the pricing for the services offered.
MariaCC
Spa is very expensive as most of them at resorts are. This spa does have free amenities for all guests though. There is a calming pool and a hot therapy pool along with a cold therapy pool.. all free for all guests.
zspeed95
Spa prices are kind of high. $300 for a couples, $140 for a single person.
MSPHST
Spa massages are not worth the money....however spa atmosphere is very nice.
birthdaygirl
My husband and I got a couples massage. My therapist was a little to rough for my liking, but other than that it was nice. I also got a green coffee wrap. I would not recommend this particular service. I didn't see any results for the money. We had $200 in spa credits, and still spent about $300 for these two visits. I also jumped at the chance to recieve two different 5 minute complimentary massages out by the pool.
ispwife
There are different specials each day in the spa (e.g., facials, massage, etc). One day the special was 40% off any 55 minute deep tissue or swedish massage. They start at $149. Or they give you resort coupons for $40 off any spa service. It still adds up.
ThinkPink
The spa prices at the resort were very expensive! I recommend going to the Jungle Spa in Puerto Morelos instead. The money benefits the Mayan women, and the prices were much more affordable. It also is a unique way to learn more about their culture. My husband and I had an hour long massage (only $40 U.S. a piece), and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience! The concierge can help you arrange the services. It does require a $25 cab ride, but then you can also shop in Puerto Morelos too and make a day of it. We then walked the beach all the way back to the resort and enjoyed the lovely day (took about 1 hr. 15 minutes to walk back).
LovingTheTropics
It was $119/person for 55min june 2013
jtripper
Spa was small but beatiful - There is a private pool that is available all day for your use with any service purchase - I got the fish pedicure and paid $60 - My feet were so smooth after! It wasn't my greatest pedicure but it was worth the experience - I talked with others who were thrilled with their massages - ranged from 100-220
traceface
Expensive... Around $170 for 80 min massage but they were running a promo for $119 for 80 min deep tissue.

Did anyone go on the excursions? Were the costs reasonable? Favorites?7 answers

JBtravel
The excursions are a great way to spend the day and take a little break from the beach. The cost of the excursions offered on our website are typically 10% cheaper than what's offered at the resort. If you like history, the Chichen Itza Mayan ruin excursion is fascinating. I loved Xel Ha (pronounced Shell Ha) for a full day of swimming, snorkeling and sunning.
ccsusan1
We did the Tulum extreme excursion and highly recommend it! The zip-lining and repelling was really fun. The freshwater cave snorkling and ruins at Tulum were amazing! About $220 for two people.
ispwife
We took an excursion to Chichin Itza (one of the seven wonders of the world), the Mayan city with the largest existing Mayan pyramid. If you like historical stuff, this is the place for you! We booked through Apple while on the resort for this excursion. We were bussed about two hours away and got to tour the ruins with an incredible guide for about two hours. This was followed by an awesome lunch at a resort on the site. After lunch were able to go to a "cenote", a giant fresh water sinkhole, and swim for an hour! We were finally bussed back. This was about $110 a person, but worth every cent.
cmccleary44
Yes, we did Chichen Itza and Playa del Carmen. The Chichen trip was an incredible value (Tours R Fun via Olympus) and our guide Ave was absolutely incredible. It was a LONG day (12-13 hours) but definitely something you should see once in your life.
The Playa shopping trip was nice, but would probably just take a cab next time to avoid having to make 10 stops at other hotels on the way there. We got it for free from Olympus though so can't really complain.
Bowser
We went on the Dolphin discovery excursion where we did the royal swim with the dolphins, It was amazing and very reasonable price wise. However, be aware you are off the resort for 6 to 7 hours but the rep says it is only a 3 hour trip.
Kimmi1215
Golfing - deff reasonable price and included transportation, rental clubs, buckey of balls, and cart - $100
traceface
Xplor was great since we got to zip line, offroad, swim in underground rivers and generally be adventurous. We toured the ruins at Tulum and visited Xelha which we got as a package deal and it was pretty fun. From what we hear the other tourists telling us though, is that Xcaret was just like xelha but better. Definitely recommend the parks to anyone going down there--we had a blast! Worth the $$$

NO-which was a bummer. You have to be in one of the "preferred rooms/areas" to have access to internet or wifi.

Internet access is available at an additional charge. If you are booked in the Preferred Club, internet access is complimentary in your suite as well as in the Preferred Club lounge.

There is no free wi-fi at this resort. You can pay to have wi-fi or they allow you 15 minutes of internet on one of their computers each day.

Yes, 15 minutes per day in the computer room next to the concierge desk. You need to ask for a different 15 minute code per day.

There is not free wifi on the premise. You have to pay per day ($7), or you can use a lobby computer for free for 15 minutes a day. Just talk to concierge and they will give you a pass.

It's all about personal preference, but given the service oriented nature of this resort, personally, I did not see the value. The preferred lounge always seemed dead when we walked by with the fun being more in the common areas.
Better to use that extra money to upgrade the room itself.

There is a sunny area to the right walking out to the beach that is for preferred guests only. And a private lounge. Though it didn't seem worth it

Its good, not great, the French restaurant was the best. Breakfast buffet was good. Most the of time the seem be missing something, everything was edible, just wasnt fanastic. Dessert was below average. The barefoot grill had good hamburger and hot dogs for lunch. The food at the Mexican Fiesta was great don't miss it.

We did not travel to Playa, but we did go to Puerto Morelos. It was about 10 min. by taxi. Cantina Habanero has the coldest beer I've ever had. If youre looking for something larger, with more people, Bar Unico is the place to be. A thing to note: we asked how much the taxi to town would be and were told $15 each way. 24hrs later, when we actually wanted to take the trip, we were told $25.

Free calling to US and Canada. Is this true?7 answers

To our knowledge, no, the resort does not offer free calls to the US and Canada. However, Secrets Silversands offers Wi-Fi in all guestrooms and some public areas. It also offers a free mobile app for smartphones that allows guests to stay connected to family and friends at the resort and at home, without any cell phone roaming charges.
CoryCC
Yes. They have an app that is supposed to allow free calling. Another perk is the free wifi that allowed us to use FaceTime to call our families back home!

how is the workout facility? Is equipment plentiful and up to date?6 answers
5 years, 66 months ago

The workout room and equipment was actually better than I expected. Free weights and cardio with plenty of room. The treadmills and bikes were in working order. I think they were the Lifefitness brand.
diva82
The fitness center is up to date
AlixCC
4 ellipticals and treadmills, a few regular exercise and recumbent bikes and steppers. Total body gym, pull up bars, and plenty of weight/resistance machines for major leg and arm muscle groups.
Sonny33
The workout facility is actually pretty decent (I'm an amateur bodybuilder). It had enough equipment to get in a good workout. It included a rack of dumbells; about 15 machines; a couple free weight bars/benches; and a handful of steppers/treadmills. And as you can imagine, it doesn't get very crowded--I was the only one in there for a majority of the time.
RyanR
Great workout facility. Pleanty of equipment

It is okay. The gym is clean, with 3 bikes, 3 ellipticals, 3 treadmills, and various weights.

What kind of excursions can you do here? Is swimming with the dolphins an option?4 answers
5 years, 63 months ago
Iowa
Excursions can be viewed/booked during the booking process of your vacation package.
MariaCC
There are day trips available to swim with dolphins.
edcollie
Hmm, I don't think I saw any offerings for dolphins. Just Snorkeling and Kayaking, and visits out to the ruins and the jungle etc.
promethius
I believe they have a few places to swim with Dolphins up and down that area. We did whale shark diving which is may 15 to sept 15 and was amazing and in the open water north of Cancun, though beware of sea sickness if your prone to that. The snorkeling just off of Pueto Morelos is great the reef is really close and abundant we saw a sea turtle and lobsters. Id beware booking though the resort they're definitely charging extra for everything taxis to excursions. Isla Murejes is my personal favorite that Island is so beautiful the water is gorgeous! I believe you can swim with dolphins there too but there may be a closer place in Cancun.

Can you take off and run 2-3 miles on the beach or any trails?4 answers
5 years, 60 months ago
South Dakota
The resort sits on a beautiful stretch of beach on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. While you may certainly go your own path and run along the beachside, it gets narrow at times and can cut off shortly after going beyond the resort border. We suggest whenever going out to bring a friend along so you are not alone! While Silversands's beach isn't as large as Secrets's other properties, it is exceptional in its quality.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please call us at 1.800.915.2322.
SamCC
you can run toward Cancun on the beach but not the other way as there is no beach that way
there are no trailes
BobNash
You might be able to.... but this isn't the best place for that. The resort is nice, but the surrounding area isn't very pretty; and there aren't trails to my knowledge. From my experience, it's more like they created a relaxing central area for you to sit in a pool all day, drink, and eat. Other than that, the activity-side is lacking grossly.
Chris1543
No, the beach is very short and small. Less than a mile. There aren't any trails that I know of but I did see people runing around the resort in the early AM.

I did not go on it, but our room was right by the bikes. It was about 3 hours long.

They offer many tours, but they are expensive. Most are over $150. The best thing to do is go on a timeshare seminar they give you $150 coupon that you can use on anything. Food and room quality are very subjective topics, but based on our customer reviews, the food seems to be rated about the same at either resort. Some guests seem to find the restaurants at Secrets Silversands have a slightly nicer ambiance to them. Room quality is also rated about the same at either property, but seems to slightly favor Secrets Silversands.

Valentin Imperial Maya is excellent we stayed there also. We like the Silversands! Both are top hotels! not walking dist.

When we visited they suggest the best shopping between 30-45 mins away. There is not much located in walking distance to the resort.
Beachlover93
Most people take a taxi to Playa del Carmen for shopping/walking
KRAtotheZ
The closest town in Puerto Morelos. It is a short 10 min drive. The resort will help you with transportation. I believe a cab (round trip) is around $50. The round trip part is nice bc the same driver that takes you to town will wait for you and take you back when you are ready. It is a small village you can walk around and see everything in about an hour. Its a big fishing village so they offer excursions there as well. The resort also offers a biking tour which actually takes you into Puerto Morelos. I believe it leaves the resort between 9 and 10 in the morning.

As long as the resort has the availability, absolutely! However, pricing varies depending on dates of travel, room category, etc. Please call in to 800-915-2322 and select the prompt for existing reservations to speak to our next available agent.

Excurtions?5 answers
Should you pay ahead for excursions or once you get to the resort? Can I add them on after I purchase my room and tickets?

Jesse
In most cases it's cheaper to get before you travel, but you can add them after you purchase the reservation depending on the excursion and availability. If you have any further questions or need help booking, please call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
TimCC
All the Riviera Maya has a streamlined workflow for this. Mexico's tourism flourishes here so basically every single resort has in-house tourist agencies which help customers book day-tours of any sort with as little as one-day-advance notice. You basically check at their counter, discuss options and interests, pay with your credit card and then they'll pick you up and drop you off at your hotel. This is the case with most if not all resorts in the area, on account of a polished workflow driven by Mexico's intent to promote tourism in the area. We were staying just 4 days at Puerto Morelos (20-30 min from the airport) and were able to book a 1-day certified scuba dive trip to Cosumel when whe got there.
inglenoir
You should wait til you get to the resort. They usually run specials and have more to choose from once you get there as well.
KatiehWest
It would be easier to pay for them ahead of your trip, although you can at the resort.
PalmTreeHaven454
You can book excursions as soon as you arrive. They take cash and card. I recommend snorkeling. It was amazing!

How old do I have to be to rent a room?3 answers

A valid credit card may be required upon check-in for possible incidentals not included in your hotel reservation, so one must be at least 18. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.

I asked the concierge before in order to bring my sister who just turned into 16years old but they told me adult only resort in Mexico is available for at least 18 year old. By the law, they said 18years old can drink alcohol in the Mexico.
Dorami0123
It’s adults only, so 21 and older

Are the restaurants including in the all inclusive? And does the premium alcohol include cognac?5 answers
1 year, 19 months ago
USA
Yes, the restaurants are included in the all-inclusive, however dining restrictions may apply, please speak with the concierge for details. As for what alcohols are included, this can vary, please contact the resort directly for a list of included alcohols.
JeannieCC
yes and yes
but they shut down the bars at 11:00pm and conac is very limited :( we only drink conac as well :)
TyBond
All five, fine dining, restaurants are right there in the hotel. You must wear long pants and collared shirt for the guys girls can wear open toed shoes and dresses or skirts. Food selections are Mediterranean. Japanese hibachi. Mexican. Italian. And French. And yes all free. Very good. Not sure about the cognac
MikeBrady6
The restaurants are included and they are wonderful with the nicest waitstaff. The Japanese hibachi-style restaurant is the only one that requires you to put if for a same-day reservation. All the others are walk-in.
As for the cognac, I have no idea. Don't really drink it so I wasn't paying attention. I can say, though, that they do not have sake.
Mayvin
All food and beverages are included-restaurants, mini bar, bars, buffet, and room service. Not sure about the cognac.

No Montezuma wanted

Yes! We had no problems with the water. It's all filtered and the hotel uses the filtered water for the ice.
JuanMooreGroupOklahoma
Yes- They use bottled water for the cocktails.
MC917
Yes. The resort water is purified
McWife
Yes!
tab82781
Many people were sick at this resort and not sure why...we were fine but they did take all ice machines out of the hallways mid trip so you had to order ice from room service. Ridiculous.
