Disappointing vacation

We chose this resort because we had been to Secrets Akumal and were blown away. We were very disappointed with Secrets Maroma Beach. If this had been our first experience at a Secrets resort, we would not have ever returned to another. There were plenty of options for food, however, the food just wasn't good. The breakfast was wonderful, whether it be room service, the buffet, or Oceana. But dinner left us disappointed every time. The exception was the dinner we had at the Hibachi show. We actually enjoyed the food that night. The first day we arrived, we went for lunch at Oceana. We sat for 15 minutes before any wait staff acknowledged us or asked for our drink order. Everyone around us was getting service, but for some reason, we were ignored. We had quite a few issues with our room. First, we couldn't get hot water in the shower in the mornings. In the evenings we had no problems, but morning showers were absolutely awful due to the inability to get warm water. We even tried letting it run for 5-10 minutes with no luck. We reported the issue, but it didn't get resolved. They also had someone repairing a door 2 doors down at 11pm. Nobody wants to hear the banging of a hammer at 11pm. They also had the service crew cleaning out dishes from our "secrets box" at 11pm. They were clanking dishes just outside our door, and the dishes were from breakfast, so I don't know why they waited until 11pm to remove them. There was also a light on the step down that was supposed to be motion sensor activated. However, ours would turn on randomly several times in the night waking us up. One positive thing was the staff. For the most part, we had a wonderful experience with everyone. Marcos had been our favorite staff member from the Secrets Akumal resort a few years back and we were happy to see he was working at Secrets Maroma Beach during our visit. He is so outgoing, never forgets a name, and definitely knows how to get everyone involved in the various activities around the resort. We also enjoyed the variety of activities such as mini golf, the football/pool table, volleyball, and others.

Can't wait to visit again...

I'm still day dreaming about Secrets Maroma Beach. I rely heavily on reviews so I like to make mine thorough, so here it goes. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a cool towel and a glass of champagne and were immediately directed to the front desk to start the check in process which was very quick and smooth. We arrived a bit early but were pointed to the restaurants that were open so we could grab lunch. They called me about an hour later when the room was ready. This is our second visit to an AM Resort so we knew we were going to get approached by someone asking to join their presentation for their timeshare-like program but we politely declined saying we had already received the presentation the previous year at another one of their properties and we didn't want to waste their time or ours. Full disclosure, the first time we visited a different property of theirs, we attended the presentation and got a spa voucher for a couple's massage. They'll offer you similar perks so if you don't mind wasting an hour of your time there, go for it! The lady said she understood and would note that we were not interested. We were only approached one other time, that time the guy was more aggressive and almost got me to agree with the promise of a 3 day voucher for a later visit but we decided against it. The weather was dreamy! We were there for 7 days, the first day there was a huge rain storm and it did worry me for the rest of the week but we only got another shower in the afternoon on our last day there. The rest of the time it was sunny, breezy and just beautiful. The beach is amazing, seriously one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen. They're still experiencing issues with seaweed (all resorts in the area are) but there are guys working at it from 7 am until it's practically clean. The sand is white, clean and so smooth, you feel like you're walking on a soft rug. The water is clear and a little cold but comfortable enough that you can enjoy a swim in between sun bathing to cool you off. There is a bar on the beach and there are servers coming around to fulfill your drink orders. There were always plenty of chairs and palapas available and there are also cabanas on the beach that I believe can be booked for an additional cost. The resort itself is gorgeous and impeccably maintained. From the lawns, to the pools to the seaweed on the beach, there are people working around the clock to keep the property in tip top shape. The property itself is not huge but it’s spacious enough where it doesn’t feel crowded. You can probably walk from the main building to the beach in about 10 minutes. You'll notice there are cats, coatis (raccoon like animals) and other adorable critters all around, do yourself and them a favor and don't feed or touch them. We were told by the staff that these animals often die prematurely because people feed them food that should not be in their diets. We were also told a lot of people often end up at the clinic because they get bit, definitely not good thing to happen while you're on vacation! We had a standard room in building 14, on the second floor. The room was spacious, super modern and chic and we were told that it had been recently renovated. There wasn’t much of a view but that was to be expected since we didn’t pay for an upgrade. Housekeeping was on top of maintaining the room clean and stocked with the necessities. Our fridge was replenished daily with water, soda and a few beers, no complaints there. We ordered room service a couple of times and only had one bad experience when we ordered a late night dinner and it never arrived. When we called 2 hours later they said perhaps it was left in the Secrets box but it wasn’t so we just went to bed. This would’ve really bothered me but considering it was late and we were ready for bed anyway, we didn’t let it get to us. The first time we were going to order room service we noticed our tablet was malfunctioning, we called our concierge and the front desk, I also notified our concierge and the front desk in person the next day and it wasn’t until 2 days later that it got replaced. Lucky for us we were able to call in our food order and we downloaded the app on our mobile device so we could access all of the information that we would’ve had on the tablet. The room was notably quiet, we were never bothered by any noise from outside or the hall which was great. The bed was extremely comfortable and there were enough areas for lounging other than the bed. Now on to the food. The room service food is pretty standard, good options but nothing really to write home about. The only place you can have breakfast is the Global Café in the main building, the food options were pretty similar on a day to day basis but we enjoyed it, it was probably our favorite meal of the day. It’s buffet style and you have a server to take your drink orders. For lunch you can also eat buffet style at the Global Café or have a sit down lunch at the restaurant by the pool. The buffet was good and the sit down lunch was excellent. A lot of options to choose from and I became a little obsessed with their fish tacos and guac. By the pool you can also grab food at the barefoot grill. They have burgers, hot dogs, whole grilled fish and other tasty options. I had the grilled fish with fries on about 3 occasions and it never disappointed. Right next to the grill is also a pizza station, I would rate it a 3 out of 5, good option if you’re hungry but not something I’d necessarily go out of my way to eat. In terms of dinner, there are a few options: Italian, French, Mexican, Japanese, Seafood and Steak House. The only one we did not try was Japanese. All of the restaurants had a good number of options, the portions were just right and I felt they accommodated to everyone, even those with special diets. The French, Steakhouse Mexican and Italian restaurants were pretty solid. The Seafood restaurant, Oceana, was my least favorite which is a shame because I love seafood. The octopus I ordered was not cooked properly and the catch of the day was very bland, I barely ate my meal. None of the restaurants take reservations and most of them have a wait time, the most we ever waited was an hour and that was for the steakhouse. They give you a buzzer so you’re not stuck waiting there, you can walk around or grab a drink while a table becomes available. All of the restaurants offer 2 white and 2 red wine options included and there is also a wine menu that you can purchase from. No complaints there, the house chardonnay was good enough for me but I’m not a wine connoisseur by any means. The service was satisfactory, we never had any issues. My favorite dessert was the cream brulee, definitely give it a try. I do wish they served more lobster, I only had it once in the French restaurant and it was delicious. I remember reading somewhere that it was available at an extra cost and I was ready to pay for it but that was not the case. In terms of accessibility, there are 4 restaurants in the main building and 2 in the same building by the pool where they serve the a la carte lunch. None of them felt far or out of the way. Now for the the staff and the entertainment staff, they were amazing. The staff was always very attentive and the entertainment team were always engaging but never pushy. They really have a full schedule of activities for you to participate in every single day. There’s beach and pool volleyball, pool basketball, bingo, remote control car racing, Spanish lessons, pizza making, dancing lessons, tequila tastings and sooo much more… you really can’t get bored. There are also games that you can play separately throughout the resort like connect four basketball, mini golf, bags, ping pong and giant chess. At night they have shows but unfortunately we always went out to dinner so late that we never made it but I can only imagine they were also great. On New Year’s Eve, they had a huge dinner and show that cost extra ($200+ per person) which we skipped and then they had quite an impressive set up on the beach with a huge screen, music, 2 bars and fireworks at midnight. We danced in the New Year and had an amazing time until about 2 am. Kudos to everyone involved in making that happen, they must’ve worked all night to clean up because the next morning there wasn’t a single trace of the party left. Overall I highly recommend this resort and would visit again in a heartbeat. During our visit there were a lot of couples, I don’t see this being a party or singles resorts so keep that in mind when booking.

Great vacation

We have been on vacation on December 2018. What I don’t like: Be aware of room floor - there is step in the middle of the room that you can fell down. Also we got confused with clothes policy for breakfast- no sleeveless shirts for men. What I like: The resort is great, very clean, marvelous buildings and landscaping, the rooms are renovated, room’s design is beautiful. This is the most clean resort I have ever been, no mold smell like in other places. There is clean ocean, no seaweed. The service is excellent, you feel the attention from the stuff. Food choice is very good, especially italian restaurant for dinner and seafood restaurant next to the beach for lunch. The entertainment is good, there is a theatre in the grounds.

What's to Love

Being spoiled by the sparkling champagne and cool towel upon arrival.

As of June 2018 you can bring your furry friend along!

Chic, breathtaking interiors in warm earth tones with stunning vistas of the turquoise sea.

Powdery, velvety sand that never gets hot.

The cushy spa that boasts a spa garden, hydrotherapy circuit and outdoor massage cabins. Sa-weet.

Free round of golf at the Grand Coral Riviera Maya that was designed by PGA champion Nick Price.

Dining under a private palapa at Oceana. Rock star existence, it is.

The lit tennis courts - who doesn't love this?

What We'd Change

Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun does enforce a dress code for some of their more upscale restaurants, but it gives you an excuse to shop.

Why You Should Go

The resort is located 20 miles south of the airport so you are heartbeats away from your first delicious vacay cocktail.

The French restaurant, Bordeaux, has a wine cellar. Not too shabby.

Zip lines, swim with dolphins and eco-adventures are near - there might be a fee, but go for it. You only live once.

Chichen Itza and Coba Ruins are near - both are historical and beguiling.

Water sports out the wazoo: sea kayaking, catamaran, water skiing, snorkeling and windsurfing.

When you've had enough sun, you can check out archery, dance lessons, and billiards.
