Secrets was great, my husband and I had a wonderful time. The staff is excellent, very polite. I would recommend this hotel and I would stay there again and again. Wonderful!!!
This will be a thorough review… as I do not write many reviews, I felt this one is very necessary for first time travelers to Mexico. I’ve broken down my experience in sections, hopefully covering all aspects Please note all dollar amounts I am listing are USD, the resort pricing lists and shops are all in USD, but you have the option to convert to pesos. The resort would prefer you pay in USD, stating their conversion rate is lower than outside of the resort, so I would suggest getting small USD bills for tipping. We stayed from May 24-28th; the weather was high 80s low 90s, but the beaches contained a lot of algae and seaweed for the season which stripped the clean white sand beach feel away.
Booking (w/ CheapCaribbean)
CheapCaribbean was easy and helpful to use, we do not feel deceived by anything they advertised on the main page for this resort. The excursions are all extra cost, so please take the initial cost lightly, as you may want to purchase other incentives and end up paying a lot more. Our booking; 2x people with airfare, preferred club junior swim out suite, three excursions and round trip transportation, costs around $5000 at the time we booked. I chose the option to split the payment in two portions to make it easier financially, you can also split costs between multiple credit/debit cards.
Travel to and from airport:
Preferred club is honestly the way to go! We purchased the shared round trip transfer, which allowed others staying in various resorts to ride with us so we made two stops before our destination. Secrets Akumal is a little over an hour away from the airport, and check in was at 3pm. However, preferred club allowed us to sit in a separate lobby at Secrets and eat and drink as we please. We also had assistance to our room in a golf cart (I think this is standard service), so we didn’t have to move a muscle and relaxation began as soon as we arrived.
What we did NOT like was the constant hassling of the non-Amstar sales reps (they wear cream colored shirts) offering us “gifts” and “special deals” to purchase, which honestly takes away from the time that you paid for (sitting in their breakfast briefs) and nothing is free! Think of people trying to sell you a World Trip Dream Ventures membership! Of course, they were nice, but they laid it on thick and hardly took “no, thank you” for an answer (we were able to decline). Amstar reps and tour guides do a great job at letting you know the real deal, and telling you they are unaffiliated and you could purchase the “gifts” at your own risk.
All Inclusive Restaurants:
This experience with “all inclusive” has set the bar. The restaurants (there are about seven), were beautiful, professional and did not give the “all-inclusive buffet” feeling that I had encountered at past resorts. There is no fine print when they say that EVERYTHING was included (except exclusive alcohol, such as Don Julio 1942)! Preferred club members receive $40 in wine coupons (increments of $10 each), that you can apply to bottles (bottles range anywhere from $35 and up, and you can only use one coupon per bottle). I would recommend to tip the waiters/waitresses, but they do not hassle you or make you feel uncomfortable if you do not.
Secrets Akumal Resort (Pros and Cons)
- EVERYONE and I mean everyone was kind and professional! I cannot stress how important that is to feel welcomed in a new country. We are an interracial couple, for starters, and do not speak Spanish, we had ZERO qualms with feeling respected! You can be yourself here
- Adults only was great! There are Secrets resorts that have family friendly and elderly options, but Akumal is strictly for 18+. I rarely saw anyone under 25 years old.
- Strict dress code in certain restaurants after 5pm, gives the fancier restaurants more flare!
- Beautiful beaches and pools were not as crowded.
- Room service is exceptional, I would suggest they improve their shower water temperature though (not as hot)! Also, if you choose room service for breakfast and have an excursion and pick up is at 8-9am, order around 630am since everything is made fresh it will take a while.
- There is little to no language barrier with the staff, most speak English fluently.
- The spa is pretty pricey, compared to my previous experiences. Of course, the atmosphere and professionalism was top notch! Secrets/CheapCaribbean offers preferred club members a mere $100 off in spa service coupons (increments of $40, $40 and $20), but you can only use one coupon per visit. We were only able to book one service (80 min massage for about $235, and use one $40 coupon), based on all of the excursions we had booked, the coupons cannot be combined and went to waste. I would suggest you schedule your service at least 24-48hrs in advance and do so in person, as they weren’t very punctual in calling me back when I set the appointment up with room service.
- The free alcohol selection was pretty lackluster… I am not fully calling this a con, because it is free and definitely does its job! Just wish there was a better selection, everything seemed bottom shelf (the waiters are very pour happy and can make great cocktails though).
- The romantic dinner, advertised with a $60 coupon, is an upwards of $400+. Yes, it’s seemingly private and on the beach (there are multiple tables that are separated by canopies), but I feel it’s a little pricey for what is offered and the $60 coupon is a pretty stumpy deal. Take this con with a grain of salt, because I have not explored the menu... just saw the set up and the price. I tried to track down lobster our entire stay and couldn’t find any… so maybe it’s for the romantic dinner?
- Laundry service, again, pretty pricey, we washed about eight items of clothing (bathing suits, shorts, jeans), did not ask for ironing or dry cleaning and that ended up costing around $80!
Note: I have only experienced Tulum/Yalku Plus, ATVs and Zip Lines DBL and Coba Mayan Encounter. I will write a full review for each separately.
All in all, I HIGHLY recommend to anyone visiting Mexico for the first time! Your experience would be exciting and romantic altogether!
Just got back from a quick 6-day vacation at Secrets Akumal and I must say this is one of our favorite resorts for beauty. Let me start by saying we are a Secrets family having visited Huatulco, Capri, Maroma, Playa Mujeres, Los Cabos, Silversands and now Akumal. This is the most Eco-tropical resort of them all. There are spots around the resort that you would think you are in the jungle, and if it was not for the signs around the resort, you can get lost.
Let me start by saying, we always use USA Transfer to shuttle us so we miss the crowds, and the cost is usually cheaper than shared rides. The trip to the resort is an hour and a half from the Airport, but the drivers had beer on board so it was a fast ride.
The Resort is new with a beautiful tropical feel throughout and is situated on turtle bay and you guested it, the main theme is turtles, and stingrays. We stayed in building 9b on the second floor in the very back of the complex. The buildings are numbered from number 1 in the front near the ocean to nine in the back. The room is modern and a good size, with a Jacuzzi tub that can fit two people. People have complained about mosquitoes but we had no problem with them at all and were never bit but I did see mosquito lights on the first floor rooms.
Our check-in went smooth in a beautiful area at the top of the resort with a lot of photo opts.
Is beautiful with padded chaise lounges, and like every resort the towel game is played every day. However, unlike the other resorts if a lounge is left unattended they clean it out (thank you Vincent). Usually if you get to the beach before 9:00, you will be fine. People complain about seaweed but luckily there was very little during our visit. The water at this time of the year was warm and many people were in the ocean but not all were Secrets customers. The ocean sand was good as I was able to go in up to my chest before it turned to seaweed. The beach area is really a bay in which many Turtles, Sting Rays and Fish can be seen if you snorkel. The problem with that is that this area caters to turtle viewing day-trips and the beaches are public, so many people come and sit on the beach near the water, but there are guards along the beach to keep non-resort people off the resort area. Therefore, the resort is not adults only at the beach area and there is nothing the resort can do. The beach servers were wonderful and I cannot remember all their names but thank you all, “Mamo special Drink.”
Well as always, they were fantastic, but at each resort, we found out that the restaurants were different. At this resort, we did not care for the Portofino and Bordeaux restaurants as they had a very limited menu and the service was slow. However, we loved the Mexican, Seaside Grill, and the Hitmitsu for diner. I must add the earlier you get to the restaurants (6:00-7:00) for diner the easier it is to be seated and the quicker, you are served. Service slows down if the restaurants are full. We tried the Oceana for lunch with the same results as the first two restaurants, so for lunch we just ordered from the beach menu, which we really enjoyed. One of the biggest attractions to other Secrets resorts is the wait staff as they work so hard to make everything special for everyone however, Akumal fell short on service compared to Capri or Silversands and I was not the only one who was aware of this short fall. We tip a lot and I feel that was the only way we received better service (Sorry Akumal). One other thing compared to the other Resorts was that many of the employees had a hard time with English and just spoke Spanish, but I feel this is a learning thing and it did not affect our vacation, as my wife and I can get by with Spanish.
Overall Akumal is a beautiful Resort and “Yes” I will definitely be returning to Akumal.

Room etc: in lovely shape and clean. Ac good and better with fan. There is a cloth curtain separating the jacuzzi from the bath and main room. Not a problem for friend room sharing. There is a glass (not clear) door to toilet. Hated the bug spray smell on toilet paper. It was worst part of trip so overall very nice trip. It may be a scent they add but when I opened the water toilet door the scent was overwhelming. My son didn’t notice. Nice assortment of mini bar glass coke, Diet Coke, Fanta, sprite, sparking, Coronas, and plastic water bottles. No room for other stuff.
Mainly couples here. I saw no solo travelers. The property is easier to get around than the Secrets playa mujeres property. Disappointed that full ocean view is literally two inches of “ocean,” only preferred club see the beach. It was a garden view in actuality so don’t pay extra for ocean view unless you are preferred club I guess. I love the nespresso machine in the room. I bought one as soon as I got back. Lots of foliage and unique animals. Very fun, watch your step for fun lizards on sidewalk. Most animals I’ve seen on about 10 trips to Mexico which was a bonus.
Location very close to tulum ruins and for other 1/2 day excursions. Is very hot hot hot there at ruins after a bit. The guide walks fast. Bring your small backpack for water.
Other: say no to timeshare right in your room booking comments. It worked. Get your free pendant at the shop when you arrive, no pressure and only souvenir I had time to get for trip. They can check you in and print your boarding passes.
Entertainment: several things to do. Get paper list of activities from concierge. Paperless on the Tablet. Tablet doesn’t work off the charger; the battery is shot. Love the turn down service and channel they put on with art like program of elephants. There is a nice Beatles show. I think it is probably best show. We didn’t go to the affair one. There was one rock show with light up costumes that got a little repetitive but cool if you haven’t seen that sort of thing before. No MJ show thank goodness. Mexico buffet night is ok. I didn’t like bbq night others secrets so skipped it. Go to left for single tables not shared. The right ones require wine purchase. No vendors on beach. There are a few shops on property. A couple of nights they had a small market from outside vendors you can walk around if not interested.
Food: we never made it to lunch buffet. Breakfast pretty similar each day but good variety. Can order food right on beach. Good waitress & waiter service. I got the top sirloin at the steakhouse. It was awful. Son’s NY looked fine. We tried all but Japanese. Little coffee shop has cute desserts. I never had a chance to get coffee. Some got ice cream there certain times of day. We didn’t order room service this trip. There was a champagne chilling and apples in our room. We loved our bell boy! We got him coming and going. Rose is nice in French restaurant only. Nice bartenders at rendezvous.
Beach: not the softest sand but not bad. Don’t need water shoes. Half trip severe sea weed. They worked very hard to clean but the clean up process could dampen your experience. Water varies. Typically murky green to sometimes almost transparent. Heard it gets better further out you go. Free snorkel and vests with 45 minute limit. No flippers allowed. Read sundial in your room! However I still saw some using and a few kids came from other resorts. Lots of people snorkeling. My son took lots of fish photos in deep. It’s roped off and vests required. Watch for sting rays. Clean and no trash-No throw away cups or straws.
Day beds are reserved. I was a little offended by waitress assuming we didn’t belong but we just got to beach. Worker helped us find chairs with hut on other side. He asked room number and felt like he didn’t think we belonged there. Going to Left easiest for chairs by beach bar but way further down can be blocked off view sometimes with piled up seaweed they are piling up haul off.
Spa: they have showers there. Come early for ignored paperwork. Not enough direction. It’s outside so you won’t have your sunscreen, or shade, and hard to wear sunglasses if you remember them.
Worst massage. Biggest disappointment and waste of time. Did no good. I wish I had my money back. Did head shoulder neck massage and she concentrated 90 % arms and hands even after I asked her not to. It was 25 minute only but she forced me to awkwardly flip over then proceeded to pinch my skin between her hands and the table. Awful and too expensive. I can give myself a much better massage. No help to neck or shoulders whatsoever. Plus the guy before hand pushed on my eyes hard. Why???
Transfers Amstar: I wouldn’t do the shared transfer but do private amstar transfer. They packed us in with no room for the hour drive from airport. First round I had back seat which was very hard on my back terribly bumpy unbelievably terrible. Second time they put me next to an empty baby seat next to driver. I couldn’t sit with my son.

When did this resort open?10 answers
When did this resort open? Is construction 100% complete? I don't want to pay to have a vacation and have to listen to saws and hammers.
4 years, 49 months ago
I don't know when the resort was opened but we met people who have come for a few years in a row and it's updated with no construction currently.
Not sure when they opened but construction is complete. They have a little work left on the Water Park but there is not any noise that hurts anything. The place is beautiful.
Per the resort's official website: "the all-new Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya opens November 1, 2015." This information can be found here: https://www.secretsresorts.com/offers/introductory-offer-at-secrets-akumal-riviera-maya
The resort opened in November, 2015. They are still working on certain areas, but we didn't notice any of the construction going on.
Yes from what I could tell it is complete, no construction going on
I was there the week of July 4th and there was no construction going on. Seems to be 100% complete.
There was no construction going on, beautiful resort!!!!
The resort opened in November 2015 and construction is complete. They do routine maintenance so they may be fixing something while you're there. They were fixing the infinity pool when we were there but it didn't effect us at all. The pool was still open the whole time.
What's the best way to travel to and from the airport and attractions?5 answers
Should we rely on cab service, rent a car, or are there shuttles or other provided transportation?
4 years, 49 months ago
Round-trip airport transfers can be added to your package on the screen after the room type is selected. Excursions may also be added on this screen. Many excursions already include round-trip transportation between the hotel and the activity. The ones that do not offer transportation options for an additional fee.
Definitely recommend the shuttle to the airport and back. When reserving the excursions, transportation is included in the price and I think the best way to go. We did take taxis to the town of Playa del Carmen and used the ferry to go to Cozumel where we rented a jeep for a partial day so could drive around the island. The rented vehicles are poorly maintained. I would not recommend renting a scooter(we did that our first trip there). The traffic in town of Cozumel is bad and rather dangerous to be riding between cars in heavy traffic. Plus it can rain on you. I felt the jeep the better option.
I would recommend canadatransfers.com. They provide private transfers (don't have to share with others and stop at several other hotels on the way) and they cost very little more than shared transfers. They are the least expensive private transfer company I've found and we've stayed at resorts in Mexico over 30 times.
We used AmStar as recommended by Cheap Caribbean. If you choose an excursion or tour the transportation is included and I highly recommend it. There are a lot of traffic checkpoints with Federalis and you are best off being with an experienced driver.
The transportation provided by Amstar is great..easy to book, AC in the van, easy to find outside the airport and very reliable.
It would be cheaper to book the transportation to and from the airport through Cheap Caribbean than to take a taxi.

This resort does not provide complimentary airport transfers, however, transfers may be added for an additional fee on the screen after you select your room type.
No, but you can order airport transfer through Amstar. We purchased it when we booked our trip.
no. Book ahead with AmStar as suggested by CheapCaribbean website
Yes there is.
yes, for a fee, book it when you book your trip
Jacuzzi in every room?10 answers
Can anyone confirm if this resort has a jacuzzi on the balcony of each room?
3 years, 48 months ago
No there is not a jacuzzi in any of the balconies of the regular rooms. There may be on the huge rooms on 3rd floor, but unsure.
No it does not. I would contact the hotel and ask if your room has one.
To insure that you have a Jacuzzi in your room, it would have to be included in the resort description. For further information and assistance, please call one of our Beach Experts at 1.800.915.2322.
it does NOT have a balcony Jacuzzi in every room
our jacuzzi was on in the bathroom but the water did not get warm enough to use it
They only have soaking tubs in the balcony's of the prefered rooms
All of the rooms have jacuzzis in the room. All rooms other that the swim up rooms have jacuzzis on the balcony
There is not a jacuzzi on every balcony. I didn't see any jacuzzis on balconies but our room (junior swim out room) had a jacuzzi in the bathroom/bedroom.
Jacuzzi, yes, but in the bathroom of every room. On the balconies must only be select rooms. Our rooms have all have them in the bathroom and the balconies had just tables and chairs .

what is the minimum age for this resort?4 answers
We are looking for an all adult resort that will allow our 17 year old son.
3 years, 45 months ago
This resort's minimum age is 18. If you have any further questions or need help booking, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
There were many very young children at the resort; young enough to be in strollers. So don't feel there is an age restriction here. Children's program is available, but also, children were at the night shows or nice restaurants with their parents.
I may have seen 1 or 2 teenagers but the vast majority of people were 21 or older. The activities are adult oriented. I would recommend a Now Resort because they have excursions included for teenagers.
It is adults only so I would not think they would allow your 17 year old son.
Does this resort have a heated outdoor pool?5 answers
3 years, 44 months ago
This time of year, October, the pool water as well and the ocean water is a very nice warm temperature. There was no need for the pool to be heated.
The pools at this resort are not heated.
There is a small heated pool. But I was there in June so I'm not sure if the main pools are heated in the winter months.
The pools don't need heat! The sun does that lol. The water temp in both pool and beaches are about 80 degrees
How far is the hotel from the airport?10 answers

Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya is located just 20 minutes from Playa del Carmen and 1 hour South of the Cancun International Airport (CUN).
It is about an hour and a half
A little over an hour. Our transfer company, Amstar, was great!
90 mins by road
an hour and 15 minutes
Hour and 30 minutes
1 hour and 10 minutes drive.
It was about an hour south from the Cancun airport
Are excursions available in October? We will be on our honeymoon & want to be adventurous. I've been to the XPLOR park & want to take my husband since he's never been. I know that snorkeling with the whale sharks sill be out of the question but are there others available?
3 years, 42 months ago
If you need any help booking, or have an existing reservation, please call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
Yes, they do excursions all the time. We did horseback riding in a complete downpour and a snorkeling trip on a beautiful day. I recommend Catamaya for snorkeling, super fun, open bar and lunch onboard with either steak, chicken, lobster or a burger. The staff is hilarious.
Yes many to choose from they will try to get u signed up at the airport and at the resort
Yes, you can go to the archaeological sites, Xel-ha, XCaret, Xplor, Xsenses, etc. You're correct; whale sharks are seasonal b/c they're only in the area Jun-Aug.
Are jetski, ATV, and ziplining excursions nearby?7 answers
3 years, 41 months ago
We loved our ATV tour of the North side (natural pools, etc). It was truly our favorite part of the trip!! We passed many other types of tours and 4wd vehicles, but the ATV's were the best! You will hear about a lot of different big companies. I called KiniKini tours from our hotel lobby and they were wonderful. Great price, great tour, amazing bi-lingual/tri-lingual knowledgeable tour giudes!
We do offer excursions with a contracted excursion company. If you have any further questions or need help booking, please call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
ATV and zip lining excursions nearby but not sure about jet skiing
yes, yes, and yes
There are excursions within a 30-40 minute can ride...well worth it by the way. And you can book anything from the reps there at the resort.
Not sure about the Jetskis but ATV and ziplining yes! We did the ATV/Zipline/Swimming excursion and it was maybe about a 30-40 minute ride from Secrets Akumal. It wasn't all day so we were able to do things at the resort to when we got back (if you still have energy). The ATV was the best part about the excursion and it was a nice long ride with lots of bumps and puddles to go through.
They have Amstar reps on the resort who can recommend ziplining that's not too far away.
Are both Mexican Cafe and Seaside Grill buffet style?
3 years, 41 months ago
The Mexican Cafe is buffet style with private seating and the Seaside Grill is buffet/snack bar style during the day but a la carte restaurant during the evening. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
Market Cafe is buffet style. Seaside Grill was a la carte
The Mexican Cafe and Seaside Grill are both open for lunch but the Mexican Cafe is buffet and the Seaside is an a la carte. Great club sandwich. Both are open for dinner as well but the Cafe is a la carte at dinner.
No, you order from a menu.
How's the beach?11 answers

The beach here is great! Cited by TravelAdvisor as one of the Top 10 beaches in Mexico, Akumal Beach is beyond dreamy. Just 150 meters offshore lies the second largest barrier reef in the world. The beach has snow-white sand that's hugged by an aqua tealy ocean where you can swim with turtles.
very good with snorkeling options galore. No beach vendors on our visit
very nice. large with fine white sand. can wade out to shoulder height or more before encountering coral.
The beach is beautiful. Compared to the neighboring resorts, Secrets has the best upkeep. They rake it daily to remove seaweed. The sand is soft and the ocean is clear. Just wading in the water you could see fish.
Beautiful!!! White sand and wonderful for snorkeling.
Beautiful, very clean
beautiful and calm
The snorkeling is phenomenal.
Public beach but beautiful and can see turtles.
Absolutely incredible. Snorkeling Rentals are free and we saw sea turtles right off the shore
absolutely beautiful and I come from Florida. You do have to swim a far amount to see the turtles,

It booking "Preferred" worth the extra cost?10 answers
3 years, 38 months ago
Many people seem to think it is worth the extra money but it is a hard question to answer without knowing your budget and what kind of hotel experience you are accustomed to or looking for. Please call 1-800-915-2322 if you need assistance from a live rep!
Preferred Club is going to be that "wow" factor in case you are looking for that extra element of exclusivity and luxury. Not everyone does the upgrade but many feel there is value in doing so.
No. The Secrets we visited in the past I would definelty recommend the Preferred but there isn't much extra for the upgrades at this particular resort.
YES! We loved the Preferred club lounge. They had yummy snacks and a great little bar. We also loved the room, that alone was worth it for us.
You get access to the lounge...nothing fancy. You also get access to the sauna and steam rooms at the spa, very nice. The personal concierge comes in handy as well. The rooms are obviously closer to the beach.
I did not do the preferred booking and was absolutely pleased with my experience without it.
We thought it was. Preferred guests have their own check in spot with food and a private bar. Also, the preferred guests stay in the front half of the resort where the beach access is while non-preferred guests stay in the back half of the resort. Not a huge different but we enjoyed the attention we received for being a preferred guest.
I didn't book preferred and loved my experience you get in to all the restaurants with exception of ala cart breakfast restaurant which I preferred the tremendous breakfast buffet anyway. The preferred buildings are closer to the beach but I had a partial ocean view they overlooked the pool and I loved it. I wouldn't book preferred but whatever makes u happy
YES! Preferred members get the buildings closer to the beach. The lower number of the building, the closer you are to the beach. On the other hand the higher numbered buildings are closer to many of the restaurants. If you are preferred, you can use the Spa hydro therapy circuit for free: sauna, steam room, water features. You can also have breakfast at the Seaside Restaurant and order a la carte; we preferred that to the huge buffet. The staff there can get you practically anything you want and are so attentive and fun! We also went to the Preferred Club bar a few times which was fun. This is one time we thing the Preferred Club was worth it!
I don't think so. We've been 3 times and never booked "preferred". The resort grounds are small so all the buildings are fairly close to pools, beach, and restaurants. The preferred buildings were closest to the beach. The "preferred" status may give you the walk out pool for extra cost if 1st floor, a continental breakfast, and an hors d'oeuvres evening thing- but when you're at an all inclusive you can eat whenever anyway. I really liked the full breakfast buffet in the Market Cafe so a continental breakfast wouldn't contribute much.

No, they're aren't any boating options that I've seen. There are people renting personal boats just off to the side. Didn't see any sail boats though .
They didn't have catamarans in July 2017
No. They don't have small catamarans to borrow.

Yes, they have a sauna and a steam room!
The spa has, a steam room, a sauna , and a hydrotherapy circuit that are available at no extra charge for preferred guests. I don't know what the price is for non-preferred guests, but it is an additional charge. Hope that helps!
Yes they have a luxurious spa with sauna, steam room and hydrotherapy pool.
They have a very nice sauna in the spa
What are the restaurant options and quality of food like?5 answers
2 years, 30 months ago
Secrets Akumal has plenty of food options available, such as Mexican, Grill, Seafood, French, coffee/snacks and pastries, Asian Fusion, and Mediterranean/Italian. The food quality is good as the AMR brand sets high standards. They also have their sip, savor, and see program where you can dine at another AMR property nearby, such as another Secrets, Now or a Dreams resort.
5 star restaurants
They have an amazing breakfast buffet with so many options. We usually ate lunch at the buffet too just for the variety. I like normal American food and my husband loves to try new things, so this was a great place for us. Dinner is best at Oceana if you like grilled seafood. So many options! Hibachi grill was great too. We didn't care for the French restaurant, or hamburgers, but we come from the midwest so are used to excellent steaks and burgers! However, we love the food here! Pico and guac are always amazing!
There are 6 restaurants if I recall: seafood, steak, Italian, Mexican, French and Asian. I didn't like the menus compared to other resorts we've been to. The steaks and meat all seemed undercooked/microwaved. The room service was terrible.
24 hour room service, breakfast: buffet was amazing! Lunch: buffet, seaside restaurant or they will bring you food by the pool, dinner: Asian restaurant, steak house, seafood restaurant, Italian restaurant, French restaurant. I liked everything! Sometimes I ordered two things if I was unsure or if you don't like your meal walk to a different restaurant, there is no limit!
Why is the romance suite only available until April 2017?1 answer

The resort may not offer that category anymore. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
We are going in June. We assume there are all ages at the resort. Is it just for young adults? We are turning 60.5 answers

This resort is an adults only so any adults. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
All ages at the resort.
No, in fact, there are more "older folks" than younger. We're in our mid 40s and we were on the younger side. It's not really a party resort. There will be a few people in their 30s, but not really 20s, and definitely no kids. You'll be fine!
We saw all ages while we were there. Good mix.
I think it was a good mix of age groups!
Are the preferred club swim out rooms worth the extra $5005 answers
2 years, 27 months ago
If you need any help booking, please call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
Only if you are on the beach side
We had one and liked it for night swimming but not necessary if you won't swim at night.
Not at all
The activities are all held in the main pool and you don't want to miss them
That's up to you. What is $500 worth to you? Honestly, we are rarely in our room. We like to be around the action and entertainment at the main pool and always set up for the day there. If you want to be more secluded and don't mind spending the extra, then go for it. But I'd say keep it and get yourself a couple great massages or excursions instead!
I hear they are heated but you will be alone. Almost no one was using them when we were there. I would not want a ground floor swim room because that is where most of the foot traffic is early morning late at night.
All inclusive food and drinks5 answers
With the all inclusive rate are all meals and drinks included in the cost or just some? Also are all restaurants included? We've never done an all inclusive vacation before.
2 years, 26 months ago
All inclusive would be food and drinks at the resort. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
Everything is included-all drinks and all restaurants
Yes, we had access to all restaurants and any drinks. You do have to pay extra for wine that is not the house wine, which is not that great. Overall though, Secrets Akumal is definitely an above average all inclusive. The food was very good. You'll come away impressed!
Yes. The only exception being if you want an entire bottle of wine at a restaurant...why would you when you get unlimited glasses? All restaurants are included, all drinks at bars and dinner, room service, etc.
All food, drinks, and restaurant foods are included. However there was a wine list and high end sipping tequila list in restaurants that was not included but you can use you $10 off resort coupons toward the wine. There was always house white or red choices included at dinner at no extra charge but you had to ask for it.
Ae there there umbrellas on the beach?5 answers
Does the beach have enough umbrellas?
2 years, 26 months ago
Plenty of umbrellas on beach and around pool.
The resort does have umbrellas on the beach. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
A few. Don't recall movable umbrellas like at the pools, but they have like tree trunk looking tho vs with thatch umbrellas and built in tables. There are a few dozen of those. Then there are like bed setups with cover at the far end that seem to need reservations for. We never really ventured down that end.
yes there were plenty and the staff helps guests locate an open umbrella/lounge chairs at busy times
Yes, there are numerous umbrellas on the beach and we never had any trouble securing one (we did not go down to the beach early in the morning).
Are the mosquitos bad?5 answers
I came across some reviews on this resort that said there were terrible mosquitos, even in their room. Has anyone else experienced this at this resort?
2 years, 26 months ago
Please check with the resort directly to inquire about bug control. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
Was not a problem for us at all
No mosquitos anywhere!
No, nit considering the location and lush landscaping. We got tore up by mosquitos while on an excursion down there. The resort did supply mosquito spray, which was a tad bit alarming, but don't recall seeing any. Definitely not in the room, unless you left the door open.
My girlfriend was constantly aware of the misquitos and was getting a bit annoyed, but personally I don't think i was bothered once. They provide spray, I wouldn't say its a big nuisance.
Is there any wildlife on the premises? Coatis, iguanas, etc5 answers
Let us know what to expect.
2 years, 25 months ago
This can vary, but they do usually have various lizards and Coatis, as well as the possibility of the occasional stray cat, etc. It really can vary depending on time of year, weather, etc.
Iguanas and birds mostly.
Iguanas are the grounds
Not that much. There are iguanas and geckos, just like any other place in the south. There are birds in the lush landscaping. Only once have we seen the cat like things, don't know their name. The most famous animals are the sea turtles that they're famous for. Enjoy.
You will see plenty of smaller iguanas (2-3 feet), We saw what appeared to be a capybara one day, but he just ran through the property and hid. Lots of birds and there are fish on the grounds by the fountains.
What are thee hours of the pools and the swim out rooms
2 years, 25 months ago
For the exact location please check with the resort directly. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
The pools are open from 7 till dusk
Pools open 7am-8pm. Unsure of swim out suite schedule, I think that may be all hours
Swim out rooms are open all day
Pools closed at 8pm when we were there. If you have a swim out room the swim out is available 24 hours. If you don't have such a room I don't think you can use the swim outs (ie. you have an upper floor room).
Can you reserve pool and beach lounge cabanas?5 answers
We've stayed at other resorts and we were able to have a lounge cabana at the pool or the beach reserved for us if we paid extra for the "VIP/Preferred" package. Is this available here?
2 years, 24 months ago
Please check with the resort directly as it would be at the resort's discretion. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
You can reserve a spot for $50 each the day of on the beach. I don't think the VIP/Preferred is worth the upgrade after being there.
We reserved cabanas on the beach for an extra fee.
Only for 30 minutes. But you have to put your things there no actual booking.
Yes for $55 a day you can reserve a bed on the beach. I didn't reserve this because the beach chairs were included and were very comfortable.
What are the hours for the beach? Does it close at a certain time like the pools?5 answers
1 year, 23 months ago
Generally swimming isn't really allowed at night, however for specifics on this, please contact the resort directly as this can vary at their discretion.
No hours for the beach
The beach front is open till dark but they do start picking up lounge chairs at five pm. The live guard is there from 9 to 5. Snorkel equipment is a available till five pm. The pool hours are from 8 to 8.
IT is a public beach. Resort life guards leave at 5pm.
Not to my knowledge. In the past month they began charging locals to use the beach so it is more secluded than in the past.
How were the alcoholic beverages? Good selection of specialty drinks like margaritas ? Did anyone experience watered down drinks?5 answers
1 year, 23 months ago
Generally the drinks at this resort tend to be well made, however how they're made can vary from bartender to bartender just like any other bar. They do have a fair selection to choose from as far as drink variety. For a list of what's available, please contact the resort directly.
I actually sent back two drinks at a restaurant because they were too strong!
No watered down drinks ... and yes a good selection ... not much top shelf liquor
There is large selection of drinks. A great variety of different types of margaritas and other cocktails. I didn't experience any watered down drinks.
I thought the drinks were great - not watered down at all. They have quite a few specialty drinks (see pic) that are delicious, but it's an open bar, so you can order whatever you want. Hope that helps! For a full review of the resort, check this out: https://blondedrifter.com/2017/08/10/akumal-mexico/
Drinks were not watered down - always great and if you didn't like it they would remake no questions asked. They do have top shelf but you have to ask for it to be used instead of local..

The drive from the airport is a little lengthy at an hour long, but the seclusion on top of the fact you're only 20 minutes away from famous Playa del Carmen more than makes up for it.
Why You Should Go

You're an hour away from the airport, but remember that you'll be totally secluded.
The other cherry is that you're only 20 minutes away from beautiful Playa del Carmen.
