Highly recommended!
My wife and I decided to return to Sandos Plyacar for our anniversary after being there 3 years ago. We were really pleased to see the great changes they have made. Also the price package through Cheapcaribbean.com was an additional help! Clean white sand beach, accommodations excellent and a HUGE amount of great food. However, too much loud music in all restuarants and pool area! Could use a lower volume!
I love this resort and I will keep coming back. I'm a huge animal lover and I like that they rescue animals and take care of them. The food is fabulous and there are lots of restaurants. I'm not much of an alcohol drinker, but I do like that they have champagne. The only thing t don't like is that they roped off parts of the beach and the swimming pool for club members only. There are other pools but they are filled with kids. That is my only complaint.
Great job Cheap Caribbean, you are the best!!!

Resort Experience
The beaches were beautiful and everything was very clean. The food could have been better in the restaurants. There was a lot that went uneaten because it was inedible. The beds were super comfy and if there was an issues they came to help fix it right away.
Sandos Playacar is a beautiful resort. Very clean and very friendly staff. The resort has everything you could want and is located in a great area of Mexico. You can even take a 5 minute taxi ride over to Playa Del Carmen and hop on a ferry for a 30 minute ride over to Cozumel. Overall we very much enjoyed our stay at Sandos and would absolutely visit again.
The good....
Friendly staff. Most were fluent enough in English to have a conversation
Beautiful, well maintained rooms
Ocean view rooms have a nice view of the beach and ocean
Food was great at the buffet and the burrito place
If you want good coffee, go to the cupcake place. Best coffee on the resort
Beautiful pool and Beach area in the adults only area. (Never went to the family areas)
Drinks were yummy at every bar we went to
Now my complaints....
Extreme pressure at check in to attend a seminar to try and get you to purchase their Elite status package. I told the guy trying to sign us up several times that I wasn't interested, yet he kept persisting. Eventually I just signed up and then didn't go, just so we could get to our room and start our vacation.
People on the beach (not Sandos employees) constantly walking through the area where all the loungers are trying to sell you stuff
Same people on the beach trying to sell you drugs
One night, the resort allowed vendors to set up in an area that you had to walk through to get from the dining areas back to the rooms in the adults only section. Again, high pressure sales, bordering on harassment, as you walked through that area.
No wait service on the beach or pool areas.
Food options are very limited during non normal dining times
Rooms stay a little warm during the day even with the a/c at max.

Sandos Playacar in Playa del Carmen3 answers
Can someone please tell me ASAP: At the Sandos Playacar Beach Resort in Playa del Carmen, are the RIVIERA JR. SUITES in the NEWER building and is this building the FARTHEST from everything? Also, where are the HACIENDA JR. SUITES? Does anyone know?
I have a trip scheduled to the Sandos Playacar on July 17, 2011 just around the corner and I sure would love to know this before I leave.
Thanks!

The Riviera Junior Suites and Hacienda Junior Suites are located throughout the resort in 12 two-story buildings, with 10 rooms in each building. You can request a specific building upon check in, but there is no guarantee as to the exactl location of your room.
KristinCC
The suites are far away the rooms close to the ocean are the standard room
DiverDan36
Riviera Jr suites - not sure
Hacienda suites - Are in the middle of the complex (about a 3 min walk to the beach). Fyi, didn't look inside these, but they looked very nice from the outside.

What is the "disco" like and how do you dress?3 answers
7 years, 95 months ago
April
The disco has a variety of ages and is all about the dancing and hanging out with other guests. You may dress nicely or a little laid back if you wish.
DanielleCC
The young people like it, I have been once and had fun, the music is good, and people dress how they want, dressed up or down.
doublenickletraveler
The disco is very small but if you are under 30 you might enjoy it ...late night place to hang out and drink and dance.
Any attire works.

I don't think they checked IDs, but suspect wristbands may identify those who are underage. The Disco is awful. They played a bunch of techno music from Argentina. The place had a really funky smell and the DJ didn't know what he was doing. There were times where there was long periods of silence between songs because the DJ was missing in action.
evilrabbit
I don't know as there was a specific age as they didn't sell alcohol in there - my guess is 18 yrs or older.

Sandos Playacar is located only 7-10 minutes from downtown Playa Del Carmen.

by cab - 5 minutes. By foot - 30 minutes. By bike - 12-15 minutes.
jsbalentine
You will need to take a cab into town or over to the Avenues. There is a sweet litte plaza within walking distance or a fun bike ride from the resort. Nothing else is close enough to walk unless you are a marathon walker. Plan a day to go into the different shopping areas.

Taxes and gratuity are included in the total package price, however, it is certainly your prerogative if you would like to tip any staff members at the resort.
MariaCC
yes
pittpanther1
yes it is, however, the staff works really hard and never expects a tip, but it is good to give them a dollar every once in a while for the wonderful service with a smile you receive.
doublenickletraveler
Yes, but the staff appreciate extra tips though no one tips much since you don't carry money
Brb1
It is customary to tip the bell boys when they get your luggage, but beyond that, nothing else is expected .

Are premium drinks included?5 answers
7 years, 87 months ago
Virginia Beach
The All Inclusive Plan includes unlimited domestic beer, domestic & international wine and cocktails.
MariaCC
Yes and no! You can request certain brands, but they don't offer the premium brands at all the bars. There IS a club you can join where you get the top shelf stuff.
GypsyJackie
I think it depends on the type of room you book. There are lounges in both lobby's with the highest end liquors but all bars have really good name brand liquor.
doublenickletraveler
There is a cost if you want something from the top shelf. If you upgrade your room to Black bands then there is not, but you will spend a lot of your time riding a van or golf cart back and forth to your room.
blairgentry
Not really. You might get some better quality drinks if you stay in the adults only section

Is it possible to make reservations at the resorts restaurants online before going?4 answers

Majority of resorts do not allow restaurant reservations to be made prior to check in. Please contact the resort directly for more information.
CaitlinCC
I'm not sure but they have places where you can go and eat without recervations inside the hotel. Also, the Meeting point thats where you go and reserve. Try the Janeiro Brazilian Restaurant you will love it.
Chrirosa
the reservations need to be made at the resort, but it is no problem, we call from our room to make the reservations.
doublenickletraveler
I'm not sure about online, but you definitely will want to make reservations 1 week before arriving. They will turn you away if you do not have a reservation. I suggest the French to be one of the restaurant you try. Brazilian didn't have much taste and was a bit dry.

Are there jet ski rentals?8 answers
Does the resort or any where close rent jet skis? If so what is the going rate? What other activities are available for a fee? Is there a website to check them out?
6 years, 81 months ago
New York
Jet Ski rentals are available in the nearby area. For more information please contact the resort directly.
CaitlinCC
yes, there are. you have them at the beach and also at another location which they will tell you all about and the price is USD $65 per person or $120 for couple for 1hr. I wish I had my pictures here so i could show you. also do the parasailing and snorkeling ask for Nacho the tour guide when you go snorkeling he is the best.
Chrirosa
You can rent them right at the beach. I do not know what the rate is however. They also have catamarans, kayaks, parasailing and kite surfing.
Playafun
There are jet ski rentals and parasail right on the beach. It is an additional cost. It is not part of the resort. The driver has to be at least 16 and have an adult with him on the jet ski unless he is over 18. It was about $60 for 1/2 hour. The rental company there was named Scuba Libre
Travellingfamily
yes, the beach area has a waverunner/parasailing company you can rent from. 30 minutes for $55 for waverunner. $60 for para sailing.

you are issued a wrist band, and that is it. Each type of reservation (adult, family, ect) has their own color wrist band.
doublenickletraveler
When you check in you get a bracelet. There are different color bracelets that provides different service. Blue is the basic i believe and from what i can notice it more than enough. No room key or ID needed. The staff will see the bracelet and you are good to go. Basically the other bracelets allows you to access premium alcohol at designated area and the cabana by the beach/pool. I saw no need to upgrade bracelet.
You will need to make reservations about 1 week ahead if you plan to dine at their a la carte restaurants though. If you do not have reservations you will be turned away. Check on the resort site for menu and different restaurants. I suggest the French to be one of the a la carte. My GF and I liked that the most.
beachguy1
This all inclusive resort is simple- when you check in, they give you a wrist band to keep on the whole time you stay. You are open to go into any of their buffets and bars anytime, no cash required (however we tipped when we thought service was great, or if they added a little extra alcohol into our drinks). Depending on how many nights you stay, they offer a variety of A La Carte restaurants, we only stayed 4 nights, so we had 1 opportunity. You make a reservation at the hotel lobby/guest services for an available time and when you have dinner no cash is required (but we did tip them). They also have lots of activities like a gym, a night club, game rooms, a mini golf course, bicycles, tennis court, archery court and a few more things that are all included.

The resort was hit by a hurricane and tore thing up about 10 years ago. they have really got the grounds looking great, the pool excellent, and the beach, unbeatable. The rooms are not kept up as they should have been. The beds are hard, the furniture is scuffed up pretty good, and the lamps had mildew on them. They offer an upgrade for their newer rooms, but they are too far away from the pool and beach. You have to hop a van to take you to that area.

The complex is ideally located on a magnificent white sandy beach, within a short distance from the town of Playa del Carmen and the famous 5th Avenue.
LizCC
There is shopping around 3/4 mile away across from the Riu resorts. There are free bikes you can use to get there but it is also walkable.
Brb1
Hi Rox, yes there is shopping within walking distance of the hotel. Actually it is a very nice walk in the evenings. It is only a small amount of shops and the prices are not as good as taking the cab down town to 5th ave shopping. The price for a cab one way is $7
blairgentry
You can walk (around 25 minute walk) or take a taxi for about $7 into town (5th Ave). There is a lot of shopping there. There is also a nearby Walmart and Sams club, which I recommend you go if you want to buy alcohol to take home... all the places on 5th Avenue charge what you would pay in the states.

There is a small shopping area within a 10 minute walk. You can also take a 15 minute taxi ride into Playa del Carmen.

New York
This resort has 3 bars that are open late in to the evening and offers nightly entertainment. It is also a short distance from Playa del Carmen, which is considered a safe town and many travelers go there to enjoy the nightlife.
BethCC
Hi New York, feel safe about walking around at night. You are in a gated community called Play Carr. We felt safe even walking around in town in the shopping district of 5th avenue.
The shows we saw were not very good. They have a couple of group participation shows that were not bad.
Didn't see any action happening at the disco though.
Hope this helped.
blairgentry
nightly entertainment is nice. did not go to disco so wont comment. Playa del carmin is relatively safe. Just remember you are in a foriegn country and act appropriately. You can easily catch a cab from sandos to playa del carmin for 6 or 7 us dollars and a return cab is very easy to find.
shopping on 5th ave is good and everything is negotiable. Dont miss the mayan dancers beside the ferry terminal.

2 years, 35 months ago
Jo
Travel usually can't be booked more than a year in advance. A deposit option can be set up for most packages, where a certain down payment is required up front and the final balance is due 21 days prior to travel. How you make the payments in between is up to you and wouldn't be automated.

Through Cheap Caribbean you know at a deposit then pay the balance one or two months months prior to departure.

Are there cats all over the resort? Around the pools, on the beach?5 answers
If I am allergic to cats will they be a problem for me?
2 years, 28 months ago
Blk0305
There do tend to be some wandering the property, the amount varies based on the time of year, weather, etc. How this would affect your allergies is entirely dependent upon the severity. However they generally don't wander the more crowded areas.
JeannieCC
No i did not see any cats in the resort. We did see a dog the first day but he disappeared after that.
AlboTraveler87
It wasn't an overwhelming amount of cats. Saw one or two at the pool, some hang around the restaurants.
loohoo060789
There are cats on the grounds. They're not "all over" by any means. Only saw them in one little area designated for them, la Ciudad de Gatos, where they had a little cat house and some stuff to play on, and presumably food. They lounged around there. You might walk by them, but their little home isn't even near any of the hotel sections. Never saw them anywhere else, including pools or the beach.

Hacienda Junior Suite vs Riveria Junior Suite4 answers
Traveling to Sandos Playacar in November with 2 Adults, 4 teenagers, a toddler. We are booking two rooms. What is the main difference between the Hacienda Junior Suite and the Riveria Junior Suite? Is the price difference worth it?

North Carolina, United States
The Hacienda rooms come with a garden view, are 388 FT², and have a wading pool. The Riviera rooms come with garden, pool, or jungle view, and are 559 FT². Please see two lists below of the different amenities for each room.

Vanity Mirror
Hair Dryer
Integrated Living Area
Minibar
Plasma TV with Satellite
Air Conditioning
Plush Bathrobes
In-Room Safe
In-Room Jacuzzi
Iron and Ironing Board

Telephone
Hacienda:

Balcony or Terrace
Coffee Maker
Elegant Rattan Loungers/Chairs
Outdoor Jacuzzi
Minibar
Iron and Ironing Board
Integrated Living Area
42” Plasma TV with Satellite
Air Conditioning
Plush Bathrobes
In-Room Safe
Daily Turndown Service
iPod Docking Station
Sun Terrace
JeannieCC
Just came back from Sandos Playacar this week. The main difference is the location and there are some amenities differences. The Riviera is the farthest from the beach and most of the attractions of the resort (there is a pool there). It's close to the lobby and a couple restaurants, but that's it. The Haciendas are small buildings with maybe 2 (?) suites in each. They're beautiful, very modern, and in a secluded garden type area of the resort. For 7 people, you would basically take a full Hacienda suite and have like 3 rooms- master suite, bedroom, second bath, living/dining area. Would probably be nicer than two separate rooms. These are between the Riviera section and main beach section of the resort. Each has a private small pool and a jacuzzi. Can't speak to the price difference but hope that helps.
LauraBird
Sorry I dont know. You can call their toll free number
jlb98387
It doesn’t matter. If you are in a family room and not an upgraded black band suite you will be way back on the far side of the property. It’s a 20 min walk to the beach with non existent or full shuttles.
Lwilkes
Where are the riviera junior suites in the family section actually located with comparison to the beach, the standard rooms, and the reception area?5 answers
2 years, 27 months ago
JoJoPiccoloPlayer
For a full resort map to see where all of the different buildings are located, please contact the resort directly.
JeannieCC
You can get a riviera junior suite by the Beach area or in the family area (close to the main lobby), which is next to the adult area. The adult area is at the end of resort. You will have about 15 min walk from the beach. Then there is a family area around the lobby. There are three restaurants there, Asian, Brazilian and Steak House at the ground level.
Then there is a VIP area with villas, Jacuzzi and private pools.
Then it's the beach area where is the main pool, buffet, bars and the rest of restaurants.
Petro
OK I'll try to write out a map for you. The resort is organized West to East, with the Beach on the far East side of course and the lobby at the West end. The Riviera is closest to the lobby on the west side, then the Haciendas in the middle, then the Gran Plaza, Spa, most of the restaurants, stuff to do etc., then the Beach Section closest to the beach. So the Riviera junior suites are probably a 10-15 min walk to the beach. They also have shuttles going pretty regularly back and forth from the Riviera/Lobby to the Plaza/Beach, we usually walked. Hope that helps.
LauraBird
The family section is back away from the beach next to the main lobby

Environmental Levy Fee
The Municipalidad of Solidaridad in the Rivera Maya is one of the most beautiful places in the Mexican Caribbean. Tourism has been instrumental in driving the economic and social development of the region. In an effort to continue to preserve, conserve and beautify the destination, the Municipality of Solidaridad has implemented a small environmental levy on visitors effective September 1, 2017. Hotels will collect 20 Mexican pesos per room per day on check out; the proceeds will be deposited in an environmental trust to fund local projects. The Municipalidad of Solidaridad thanks you for your understanding and support of this worthwhile endeavor. Thank you and enjoy your visit.
