Sandos Caracol used to be great. Not now.

This used to be a great resort for families. We've been there three times in the last decade, but it's getting run down now. They've closed the 24-hour snack bar, and have very poor selections in one of the restaurants until midnight. A lot of the bars and restaurants close earlier than they used to, or don't even open. The rooms are looking dated and worn out. The beach isn't too great to begin with due to having some rocks, but it's good for people with small kids because there aren't big waves. The water was literally as black as espresso coffee this time due to seaweed (which I know isn't the fault of the resort). We were allowed to take a $40 round-trip taxi to their other resort in Playcar and use the beach and facilities there. I think they should provide free transportation a few times per day when the seaweed is this bad. It's time to move on to other resorts...this one is needing complete renovation.

Good Value

Took my daughter to this resort for a mother daughter vacation. It is a great family resort with a ton of inclusive things to do! The room was very comfortable. The phone was frustrating as it required me to make several call attempts bc I guess of a bad connection, the other person could not hear me. The only suggestion for the room would be to have the ability to connect the TV to the WiFi so that our smart phone could stream from Netflix etc. Service was ok. through out the resort, some staff were ultra friendly, others somewhat gruff. The room service does need to be picked up or requested to be left in the room until maid service the next day. Ajoining rooms kept putting dirty plates out and the Cotie creatures would wake us up at 3am scraping the plates across the cement, which caused a loud echo. There had been a recent red tide, so our ocean swim and activities were limited, however the pools were great and the water slides were also very fun! the entertainment staff was fun, and had regular pool, and beach games and activities. Food was starting to get old by the end of the week with the same 2 basic restaurants for breakfast and lunch. the dinner options were decent. I did expect more flavorful Mexican and Italian. The Hibachi was really fun! Although the resort was fun and full of options, I feel as though our best 2 days were the days we went into Playa Del Carmen (Bring Pesos for taxi fare change!), and also the day we took an excursion to ChiChen Itza. Overall we had a really great time, and since it was my daughter's first trip out of the country, she had no comparison so thought everything was amazing! I don't think it is a resort I would return to repeatedly, there are just so many others to try for a new experience each time!

It was okay

Food was fantastic. Just fyi.. Mexico, in general, doesn't have a lot of beef choices so meats are seafood, pork, chickens and eggs primarily. Lots of vegetables, fruit, and dairy choices. The resort does a good job warning of food allergies. The buffets are quality and actually do a good job broadening your food horizons. Get reservations for the Japanese steakhouse immediately or they get booked. The Brazilian steakhouse is right next to cat land so at dinner time you can expect a couple of visitors to come swing by and beg for food. the cats weren't really discouraged and it seemed to be part of the experience which we loved. They were well-behaved and knew not to jump up on tables and chairs. Liquor... They don't go heavy on liquor by the pools, but they do at the other bars. Maybe it's the bartender... ? I imagine they go lighter on liquor by the pools to prevent people from getting sick and dehydrating out in the sun. The waitresses will come check on you if you're in the sun to make sure you're okay... But it's disguised as an offer for refreshment. This was nice to see. Rooms... I had 1 room with my partner (we're gay) and a single king bed requested. Honored with no issues. We were asked if we were friends initially which made my partner nervous to disclose. But we did and we were given a room with a hot tub included. Not sure if that's normal but it felt like they did an extra here. We enjoyed and appreciated it. AC was good in the room. No filtered water on tap but there's a stocked (included) mini fridge with pop. Room temperature water in the room. There are (somewhat tame) animals on campus so expect some noise at night. My partner and I now make jokes and mimic the peacock calls we heard all night. Still slept good. Pools and Ocean... The family pool is like 3.5 feet deep. Not good for adults... But it does have a swim up bar. You have to keep track of your towels to exchange for a card or they charge you $20. They warn you of this so be prepared to manage your kids and their towels appropriately. The adult only pool area was 5 foot deep. Better, less crowded. Overall, not enough pool space for everyone. We went in June. Do not come here expecting a good ocean experience... It's tons of rocks and tons of algae. if you want an experience with a good ocean like you see on TV go to the east side of Cozumel or the Bahamas. General things about the resort... We booked with cheap Caribbean and we weren't aware that we were getting the Green family bracelet... this barred us from the adults-only pool initially which required a gold band. We did get called to the reception desk for a "free gift" which was actually a timeshare presentation to upgrade to the gold band even if we didn't purchase. We initially thought it was a little bit of a trap but they were very upfront about everything and even gave us how long it would take. Zero pressure after we declined and they did give us our gold band. We took it as a blessing in disguise because we wanted something deeper than a 3 ft pool and a poor ocean experience. Swimming in the cenote and the Jade River looked interesting but we don't like snakes and bugs. The water was crystal clear though... I kind of think we should have reconsidered but we were stereotypical gay guys here. :P We did see dreamgirls which was a nice 45 minutes show. Go and see a show if one of them interests you. Mild annoyance.. they try and upsell you extra services... $165 for a 1-hour massage??? And that's the special... Every day... So it's not a special. And costs extra... On an all-inclusive resort...? This resort states available WiFi but it's very poor outside the lobby areas. We called once to ask about it and they said they were fixing it but it never got fixed. I think this resort sells your personal information also. I started getting international spam calls during layovers. Overall not terrible. It was okay. Eco Resort here seems to mean "cheap" in some ways but entertaining in others.
