Great Family Resort

Royalton Riviera Cancun is a beautiful, mid-size resort with multiple dining options, pools, adult activities (water and beach sports) and an amazing kid’s club. The staff at Royalton Riviera Cancun were top-notch- everyone was kind, attentive and always willing to go the extra mile. I cannot day enough good things about Daniel at the pool who engages guests in a friendly, easygoing way to participate in pool & beach sports. We really enjoyed snorkeling and the staff were very helpful in showing my wife and nine-year-old son how to do it. We have been at two other area resorts with awful cafeteria-like food, here, they made a true effort to serve delicious food. The size was manageable and our kids could be more independent on their own. Guests are offered ‘coupons’ and they must go to their desk to claim them - be forewarned, it’s a hard sell to buy in to their ‘Royalty Club’ (timeshare). We were very pleased with our stay and we will definitely visit another Royalton resort.

Great hotel, service could be improved

Spent a week at the hotel in late February. We had a great time and really enjoyed the hotel and surroundings. First, the accommodations. The hotel itself is very well kept and clean. It is big but does not feel that way, and while we went in high season, it never felt crowded. We stayed at an ocean view luxury family suite, and it was big enough for our party of 5 (including two adults, two kids and an older person). You can select your room in advance on the hotel’s web site after you have reserved. We would highly recommend buildings 8 and 9, fourth floors, if you have kids. This is because some of the rooms in the fourth floor come with a rooftop patio and jacuzzi. Buildings 8 and 9 are better if you have young kids, as they are in front of the most kid-friendly pools and noise is minimal after 7 p.m. (other buildings have entertainment in front of them until closer to 11 pm). The room was amazing, it faced the pool and you could also see the sea, and was very roomy, with a balcony and stairs leading to the rooftop patio and jacuzzi. Mini bar was stocked with basic drinks (water, soda and beer), but only had two small bags of chips per day. Very standard for all inclusive, but some more options (nuts for instance) would have been appreciated. It gets refilled every day. On to the pools. They were kept clean and open from 7 am to 7 pm. There are two splash pools with games for kids, including water slides (and an additional small pool with bigger slides). There are an additional 3 pools that we used, but suspect there were at least a few others on the other side of the resort that we never got to. Lifeguard duty was spotty, but that was not an issue for us as there always seemed to be one around on a given side of the hotel, if not in every pool. A bit more of an issue is people reserving loungers or chairs beside the pools. The hotel is very clear about a no reserving policy, but in our experience if you hit the pool by 8, most of them were already reserved, sometimes by people that never showed up. I guess you could approach a hotel employee and complain… But in reality it was awkward, and you will need to decide if you prefer to follow the rule and be left without any shade for the kids, or have to take turns at having breakfast so someone can stay in the chairs, or put your stuff in them and reserve them while you go have breakfast (which is not allowed by the hotel). On the beach, it has beautiful white sand and accessing loungers later in the day was not an issue (contrary to the pools). However, it had a medium-high amount of seaweed. It was not an issue for us, you were still able to enjoy the sand and the sea. Bathing was not a problem for us, but might have been for some (you could feel some seaweed when you bathed, although there was not enough of it to bother you while in the water). This was not an issue at this hotel only, as it was the same in other beaches that we visited. Restaurants. The breakfast buffet was very good, but I would stay away from the buffet for lunch or dinner. For lunch, the grill and small eatery by the pool in the kids area is very good and often has some additional specialty plates prepared fresh (paella, sea pasta, etc). Otherwise the pub and Italian restaurant are also opened for lunch (as well as a food truck beside the main pool, but we did not try that one). At night, the restaurants win over the buffet hands down. We went to the buffet for dinner our first two nights and regretted it. We tried the Caribbean, Hunter and Mexican restaurants the other nights (as well as a local restaurant outside the hotel, see below) and it was great. They are kid friendly and if you went around opening time (6pm) we did not have to wait. We had to wait for 45 minutes for the Caribbean one because we arrived close to 7:30, but it was well worth it. Buffet was good, but did not compare with the restaurants. No reservations allowed, unless you are Diamond Club. Now excursions. This depends a lot on your level of comfort with travelling by yourself. They are overpriced, but do provide more predictability while providing less flexibility. We decided to rent a car instead and drove to Tulum, Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen. They will tell you that it is almost a 1 hour drive to Tulum. In reality, it is closer to 1h30 if you leave around 9 am as we hit some traffic crossing Playa del Carmen. The drive however is easy, signs are plenty and Google maps works great (roaming plan will pay for itself if you drive instead of going on a tour). Tulum itself is beautiful, and we ended up spending more time there than anticipated. We paid for the tickets only, and found a local guide inside the ruins. After, we walked to the nearby beaches. We seated in the first restaurant we found, but in retrospect should have walked a bit more to look at options as it was not that good. Make sure to ask for the price of what you are ordering before you order, as prices are not written down anywhere and they will try to upsell you. The beach however was very nice, nicer than the one in the hotel. We ended up arriving around 10:30 am and leaving around 5 – 5:30 pm. A word of caution: by 5-5:30 the main parking lot in Tulum, where we were, becomes quite empty. While we never felt we were in danger, I would caution that it would be better to leave the parking lot by 5:30 -6 at the latest as the shops close but some of the bars remain open and the ambiance seems to change. We also went to Puerto Morelos, which we found much more interesting than Playa del Carmen. It is much smaller, a small fishing village but you will get more of an authentic experience. We went there in the evening and it felt very safe. We ate at an amazing restaurant by the sea, El Merkadito (very good food, and cost was ok, US$50 for three adults and two kids). Finally, service. Overall, it was very friendly and great. They receive you very well, rooms are very well cleaned and people overall very friendly around the resort. They have a doctor in house, which always give you piece of mind if you travel with young kids (although we did not have to use that service thankfully). However, two things make me give it 4 stars overall instead of 5, and they are both related to service. First, when you register, they will tell you to go see your building’s service desk (there is one in each building), to get some coupons. In fact, they will try to convince you, quite forcefully, to attend a presentation on a “special membership”. At the same time, they will tell you that if you attend you will get a rebate on tours, gift baskets etc. If this took 10 minutes, and when you said no they let you on your way, it would not have been an issue. However, they are very forceful, and try to make you sign a document to commit to attend the presentation and get the rebates. On the rebates on tours, even with the rebates it was way cheaper to do them yourself. You still get the coupons if you decide not to attend, but the whole conversation was uncomfortable and took about 30-40 minutes. Second, tipping. We usually prefer to tip a larger amount at the end of our vacation to help people that have given us consistently good service (the exception was the evening restaurants, were service was so good, we tipped each night). In some occasions this clearly became an issue with delayed service to our table by a waiter we had not tipped the day before at the buffet for instance (although this was not the only example). Their staff needs to be better trained on this. To be fair, this was not widespread, and only happened in a few instances, but it was clear when it did happen and not something I appreciate when I go on vacation. All in all, a great trip, highly recommend the hotel. Will likely be back.

depends on what you're looking for

Resort is huge and has a luxurious appearance. As infrequent international travelers (from WI), we went with the Junior Suite. It fit our needs well, and is a noticeable step up from your typical hotel room. We vacationed during Christmas break, and found there was still room in the pools for swimming / hanging out. We only went to the beach once because there was a 3 foot high wall of seaweed piled up on the sand that you had to climb over to get to the water. It was fun to swim in the waves, but there wasn't anything to see if you want to do some snorkeling. The pools are a much nicer, family friendly place to hang out. The staff was always helpful, and really made navigating the huge hotel much easier. The restaurants had limited menus, and you had to wait up to 2 hours to be seated, depending on when you showed up to get your name on the list. I recommend sticking with the buffet for all meals as they had very nice selections that anyone would like. There is a ton of fun excursions to do in the area, and the hotel has stations setup to make it easy to book anything you want to do. The excursions were, by far, the highlights of our stay. We felt like we didn't get what we paid for because we don't see value in the extra pampering and unlimited drinking. Would rather pay less to get less.

The hotel was beautiful in every aspect. Came in December so the tree was lit and the holiday decorations were beyond outstanding. Can’t wait to come back. Room was amazing as well. Food was only ok
