Paradisus has yet to fail us

This is our 4th trip with a Paradisus Hotel and have been happy with them. We booked this trip for 6 nights and had a great time. If you are looking for a relaxing place that offers great food, Paradisus Hotels have been a great choice We have been happy with their locations at their Cancun and Dominican Republic locations as well.

WOW

Storm blew in sea debris the day before we arrived. The dead sea odor was terrible Relaxing on the beach was not available. The clean up crews worked tirelessly to remedy the debris/odor. Pools were excellent. Clear, clean, warm, no chemical smell. Food was excellent as was entertainment. Felt safe the entire time in Playa regardless of news reports Room was over the top comfortable clean. Entire staff was bending over backwards for guests. Always friendly, smiling. For the staff, communicating in English was not an issue.

Mixed Feelings

There were 8 of us in our group. We were greeted promptly upon arrival to the resort and were met by wonderful fragrances in the lobby. Check-in was speedy and informative. The bellman lead us to our room and pointed out all the amenities in the room. He made sure to point out the cartoned water next to the sink to use for toothbrushing. The room was spacious and very clean, as was the resort itself. I was pretty impressed with how many times we saw the staff cleaning various areas of the resort on a daily basis. There were many options for meals; I would suggest the restaurants that require reservations, as the buffet is just average. I was extremely impressed that at every meal, we were asked if anyone had allergies. The waitstaff were friendly at all the restaurants, but I want to give a special shout out to Diego at The Grill. He was so nice and helped to find something that I could eat (there was only thing on the menu that didn't contain onions, which I am allergic to). Thank you Diego! There were some areas of the resort that were for "Royal" customers only, including a restaurant, pool area & beach area. There were also extra charges for certain alcohol (even something as cheap as Moscato) and food. Next time, we will be sure to not visit a resort that isn't truly all inclusive. The pool area is clean and spacious. Half of the pool chairs were already reserved with towels by 7 a.m., so you do have to get up early if you want a good/shady spot at the pool. The beach is rocky, so I would suggest you bring water shoes, or take the 5 minute walk further up the beach where the water was clear, with no seaweed or no rocks. The seaweed in the resort section of the beach was piled up as tall as we are, but the staff worked diligently to remove it. My husband and I enjoyed the beach despite the seaweed and rocks. Having waitstaff at the beach was awesome! Special shout out to Manuel! The waitstaff were quick and friendly and would bring drinks and food from the pool bar. I do wish we could have ordered food on the beach from the Grill. Ok so now for the MIXED FEELINGS part--all of the above is accurate and we (my husband and I) had a good time, however, 7 of the 8 of us were sick with varying degrees of vomiting and/or diarrhea. This started the day after we arrived and lasted for 1 week after returning. We called the resort doctor and was told it was a virus we picked up. We weren't so sure, due to how long the illness lasted. We were very careful not to drink the water, so we know it wasn't from what we consciously ingested. We did consume a lot of drinks with ice cubes--not sure if they use filtered water or not. We were also told they use non-filtered water to wash the vegetables. We also witnessed birds landing on the buffet and eating from the buffet at The Grill. So, the illness could have been from non-filtered water, the birds introducing feces/disease onto the buffet, or food poisoning. Some of our group went to their doctor upon our return to the U.S. and their doctor believes it was not a virus and most likely the water in some form or another. We have visited many resorts all over and have never had the experience of getting sick.

overall experience

The resort is beautiful as well as the beach. Services could not be better. Every staff member took personal ownership of making me feel welcome and happy. Restaurants were very fancy and if you like international foods then you will love it. I wasn't sure what 1/2 of it was on the menu though. The only negative aspects I found was that the pool was too cold to use and additional charges for the extra little things such as reserving a nice poolside bunk for an entire day. It would have been better to reserve the nice ones for maybe 4 hours and made more affordable. Same thing with a ocean view. I thought I was getting one but didn't. They did make it up to me by getting me into an absolutely beautiful suite though. Nicest room I've ever had. Again, they go out of their way to make you happy.

What's to Love

Hanging with other beach-loving adults at this all-inclusive luxury resort.

Drinking deliciously yummy martinis at "M Bar." Cheers.

Unwinding from a relaxing day beachside. Dip in the Jacuzzi on your balcony if you want.

Upgrading room to Royal Service - luxury suites, private pool, Bali beds at the beach. So worth it.

Two full-time staff members that are dedicated to guests' experience, i.e., spoiling you rotten.

What We'd Change

Rooms are modern and comfortable but can seem dark. With all there is to do, you won't be in the room before dark anyway.

Why You Should Go

Once you land, you're just a short 45-minute from beachy bliss.

Lots of party-inspired classes - tequila tastings, wine tastings, tango lessons.

Zen-like activities, too. Pilates, stretching, meditation. Time to disconnect.

Booking time at YHI spa and melting into a massage, facial treatment or the plunge pool.

You can shimmy over to La Esmeralda. You've got access to their amenities.
