Surrounded by lush jungle greenery, this tropical paradise is cuddled near a sugar-sand beach with spellbinding turquoise waters. Better still, its Mayan-inspired, eco-friendly and breath-stealing plants are tucked in every nook and cranny. Grab a nice fruity beverage, kick back and admire the ways of the waves day in and day out. Or, you can fancy oodles of activities like water sports, pool shenanigans and the crowd favorite: unlimited delish food and drinks.

Great Resort!
From the time we arrived to the time we left, everything was perfect! Great customer service, everyone was super friendly and it was very clean. Definitely going to stay here in 2020!

Pro's and Con's
The food and service are excellent - there are several great restaurants and the buffet and snack bar are excellent alternatives. The hotel is huge but they have trams so you don't have to do all the walking and the trams are continually running - no long waits.
The Cons -- Free Wifi in LOBBY only - must pay for wifi -- but they want you to use their app - we were only able to book one of our dinner reservations instead of 3 due to availability :( the Peruvian Japanese fusion was excellent and I highly recommend the Seafood Wok. No wait service at the lawn chairs had to walk to the bar for another drink :( I believe there is a shopping area somewhere on the property but we never saw it - might be by the casino - since they want you to use the app there was not a book in the rooms like previously. Mini bar was not stocked daily as stated.
this is our 9th all-inclusive to the area and our 2nd to Grand Bahia - definitely would return would just like to change a few things to make this my favorite -- it is a very beautiful property

This was my 1st all inclusive vacation I have ever took, it was a girls trip, I have to say I was very impressed, when we got there and they knew it was a get away from family and kids they upgraded us to a quieter part of the hotel which was nice, also I never felt unsafe security was great, our excursion they made sure we were wear we needed to be, yes the hotel was large but they made it for the most part pretty easy to get around! I would definitely go back we were there for 4 days and would really like to have more time to enjoy the resort, the food at the buffets were good and a huge variety, we did a spa day and they were great, truly have no complaints which is huge for me!!! One thing was they did screw up on our sailing excursion, however they reimburse us our money right away and we did something else parasailing And swimming with dolphins which was right on the resort and it was amazing!!!
There isn’t as much air conditioning in the common areas as you would hope for a hotel. It was hotter indoors than out at some points. Our AC went out the second night, they fixed immediately but the room smelled like mildew every night after. My mom who also had a room had the same issue, the mildew smell coming from the vents were horrible. Staff was very nice but be careful of everyone trying to sell u a timeshare. Trams are awesome but sometimes it’s hard to figure out where they are going and if a driver is going to get off soon he will leave you NEAR your destination and not at it. Won’t be using Bahia Principe again

When would I have to start paying for my trip if I booked it in late August?5 answers
I'm interested in booking the 5 day trip to Rivmaya in late August, it would most likely be 6 people in total, and was wondering when I would have to start making payments, or if there was a down payment I would need to pay, and how much it would be. Also I was wondering if there were any payment plans available. Thank you.
8 years, 105 months ago
Ali
You can pay half upon reservation, which would appear on your next credit card statement, whenever that's closing date is. Say you charge it in May and your statement was already issued, then you'd see the charge in June. They also let you charge the remaining half 20 days before, which would then, have your payment due after you return, again depending on your statement due dates.
mrcccr01
You can break up your payments, but the air fare is secured at first, so the entire air fare has to be paid in full. There is a $25 fee to break up your payments. All payments have to be paid 30 days before the vacation day. Example your leaving Aug 25, so all payments must me in by July 25.
LadyPAndBigTy
It was my experience that payment was do in full at time of booking.
LV2TRVL
Would be a question for a CheapCarribean.com. I think they have payment plan with fees. I had mine paid right away to save on fees.
SpaceTraveler

The deals here on the website are amazing. You can pay a down payment, and finish off the payment 21 days (If I recall correctly) before your trip. You will not receive your itinerary at this point. But the other option is paying it all off using multiple cards up to 5 I think. You will receive your travel voucher and all the details about the trip if you do this.

Are kids allowed around the pool bar?11 answers
I would like to know the policy of children around the pool bar and more adult type areas. I understand there are activities and areas for children at this resort, but some parents choose not to take advantage of those facilities. Are children allowed in the adult areas? If children are not allowed in those areas, is this policy enforced?I work with children and I really need a break. If children are allowed in the adult areas... that's fine. I just want to know in advance.
8 years, 102 months ago
AcoustickChick
Well, the kids were pretty much allowed everywhere but the casino. But for my wife and I, there is so much space and places to be that you can easily find an area to enjoy the resort.
donnie76
Yes, kids are allowed everywhere, and if you're trying to escape children, it may be difficult. HOWEVER, there are so many pools, and some are more child-friendly than others, whereas some are more quiet and there are very few kids. The premier pool at Coba is more quiet than the one with the fountain, for example, or the beach pool at Akumal, which has a lot more families. Bottom line, there are plenty of quiet areas for childless adults, but there are at least some children everywhere! :)
mommywisenyc
yes, although the seats at the bar are usually full with adults. Kids are located with their adults. There aren't any kids just hanging out at the pool bar or any bar.
LoveTraveling
I don't believe they prohibit kids from any area. We visited in Early August and did not notice a lot of small children at the resort at all
MikeyB
We saw a fair amount of children around the pool bar areas and even sitting at the bar at times. I don't know of any policy restricting the children in any areas.
Yvie29
Yes, children are allowed in all areas, but there really were very few small children while we were there and I was not disturbed by any of them in my week there. As a matter of fact, I was wondering why there were so few children...
I wouldn't say there is a lot of nightlife at this resort though. Some dancing - and you are pretty far from a town that is hip like Play del Carmen. One of the reasons we chose this resort was for that reason. We just wanted to relax.
GVHott
To my knowledge, Gran Bahia Principe Coba is a family resort. I cant answer what the "policy" is with regard to children in the bar areas, however there were some children in the lounges, at the pool with the swim-up bar and at various entertainment activities in and near the Main Lobby. My visit was in October, so there were very few children at the resort. I did notice while walking amongst the resorts that some of the smaller pools were unoccupied, so you could "get away" if you wanted. If you want to be where all the action is though, there will likely be children present!
LV2TRVL
we saw kids at the pool bar and in that area. in fact i don't remember not seeing kids anywhere while we were there. Awesome place to go
meme3832905
I did not notice any ADULTS ONLY signs near any pool, there were kids at the big main pools, while there wasn:t at the very small pools, there was a bar at each pool.
dance
I am pretty sure the answer is yes. Although you don't see many families (mostly couples), I saw a few kids in and around the pool area where alcohol was being served.
kingS
Children are allowed around the pool bar, which I personally did not care for.

How far is the beach from the resort and is it nice?11 answers
Just wanted to know how far the beach/ocean is from the resort? And is the beach nice?
7 years, 86 months ago
Portland
The resort is located just a short walk through lush, tropical vegetation to the beach. However, for your convenience, a shuttle does run continuously from the resort to the beach.
KateHCC
There are three properties near to each other Coba is their newest and about 5 minutes on their little shuttles to the beach. This is a awesome property.
Edmundson7
It is not in walking distance unless you have beach front or if you are staying in the Tulum section. These people pay more and have their own private beach. . My husband and I did not use the beach ( we stayed by the pool next to our room) but you may have to use the trolley if you want to go.
I cannot tell you if the beach is nice but I was told by others that the beach at the Akumul is nicer. If you choose to go and stay at the Coba and don't mind taking the trolley each day then I would recommend looking at all of the beaches after you arrive and choose which beach you prefer. Each hotel has it's own beach but you can use any beach that you want. Does this help? I hope it does.
Grateful1
THERE ARE SEVERAL BEACHED AT THIS RESORT. COBA BEACH WAS THE NICEST BY FAR. THE OTHER TWO WERE VERY ROCKY AND THERE WERE GIGANTIC CEMENT BARRIERS PLACED IN THE WATER THAT WERE VERY UNATTRACTIVE TO LOOK AT. UNLESS YOUR ROOM IS CLOSE TO THE BEACH, YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE THE TROLLEY.....AT FIRST WE THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE A PAIN...BUT IT WAS ACTUALLY A FUN RIDE EVERYDAY!
SWEETPOLLY
It depends on which part of the resort you stay in...it's a really big resort! We stayed at Coba and it was about a 4 or 5 minute tram ride to the beach.
PRRKRR
Very nice beaches...the shuttle takes you there in no time. Probably a half mile away.
Angelasherri
Great beach. Not a walking distance, but trolley will take you there in no time and it's free. Nice, short and breezy ride.
SpaceTraveler
Playa Coba is about a 3 minute walk at the akumal resort. The shuttle also takes you there. It's very nice, but get there early to reserve a chair because people often place a towel down to reserve there's, leaving limited left.
Lilcherry2
The Akumal and Tulum beaches are short tram rides from Coba. The beaches are gorgeous with plenty of thatched huts for shade and plenty of chairs. Snack bars and beverage bars are close as are the pools. Akumal had beach group dancing in the ocean. Tulum had group activities in the pool. Both have volleyball.
Martha1967
The beaches are very nice. It is a 5-10 minute walk to the beach and there are shuttles that take you to the beach.
LizDallas
10 minute walk to the beach from the farthest point on the resort. Or you can take a tram.

YES...AND THEY ARE WELL PREPARED
SWEETPOLLY
YES! We learned they use liquor with a lower alcohol content so ask for extra and bring a big cup with you so you aren't constantly running back and forth to the bar. ;)
PRRKRR
Yes it does! If you like shots of good tequila, like us, such as Tres, it is $4 per shot. Otherwise, their shots are of a cheaper brand and are free. Hoduras was one of their better free brands. You can ask for extra shots of alcohol in mixed drinks, and they are free too.

What room do I choose for 2 adults and 2 teen-aged boys?10 answers
6 years, 83 months ago
Momofteenagers
This resort considers anyone over the age of 13 an adult. In both room categories the maximum room occupancy is 3 adults. So you would need to purchase 2 rooms for 2 adults and 2 teenagers, with 1 adult and 1 teenager in each room.
CaitlinCC
our suite had a king size bed and full pull out couch, or you could get 2 double beds
WoodYandDanielle
Get two beds room. Beds are wide enough for two adults or single kid, plus you get a couch which is converted into a bed.
SpaceTraveler
They may require 2 rooms ...I think over 12 is adult....but the rooms are fair size and the coach converts to twin bed...Tulum may be a better bet check it out
MASSMOM
we stayed at Coba and all of the rooms have a sofa/day bed along with 2 queens which worked for us with 2 teenagers as well.
kt329
I recommend a deluxe room with 2 double (or queen) beds. The deluxe rooms have a large setee (day bead) that can be converted into a single bed so the boys can each have their own bed. I recommend they trade off between the setee and the regular bed each night)
buzzpark
All rooms are the same. Junior suites with two beds and I saw some people taking cots into the room. There is also a sitting couch area that could sleep an additional person. I would say you could if you wanted, sleep 6 in the room.
TNA1023
The junior suite is the size of a typical hilton room. Small. You will need a master suite it has two small rooms attached by a door
PAWInters
We had the Junior Family Suite and it was very spacious. It was only my daughter and I but there was more than enough room for 4 people. There were 2 double beds, a small couch and a table and 2 chairs.
girlstrip2014
Regular Suite has 2 queen beds plus sofabed, very spacious.

Does the hotel offer transportation to and from the airport?11 answers
would it be cheaper to get a cab, or pay the $50/person for the package on cheapcaribbean.com?
6 years, 83 months ago
Jay
It is very difficult to get a cab from the Cancun Airport--there is no cab port for pick up from the terminals. We recommend working with Olympus Tours, our transfer provider, we have a long relationship with the company and they are an extremely reliable company.
LaurenCC
i am not sure if it would be cheaper, but depending on what time you get in and how many people you have it might be worth it. Our transport we booked through the site took over 2 hours to get to our hotel between the distance and all the other stops...took away pool and beach sun hours the day we got there and made it so we couldnt enjoy our last morning there, i would have spent the extra money
stephanievsf
We paid 38 pp round trip and another guest remarked they paid over 100 pp taxi fm the airport!
Angelasherri
I went through CheapCaribbean.com & the transportation was included. Someone at the hotel mentioned that it's a $90 fee. Note the hotel is at least an hour from the airport, so don't be in a rush.
SuefromtheBigO
I would say book the van transfer online with your purchase as we heard that it was $90 one way and your not sure who you will be getting for your taxi and if you can trust them where as when you bookit online you have a secure van set for you and it's with the travel site that you book with. We booked on line and it was great and smooth sailing
Cruisin4jc
My friends got a shuttle to the BAHIA PRINCIPE COBA(120 KM away) for $230 for four people both ways. I hired a private shuttle ahead of time through the Internet for $165 both ways. Cabs are more expensive especially for smaller parties.
SpaceTraveler
CheapCaribbean arranged for transfers through Olympus. The service was wonderful.
Martha1967
Go with the Cheap Caribbean option, it's much easier and a little cheaper. The hotel is quite a ways away from the airport.
buzzpark
The cab would cost approximately 80-90 from the airport for 4 people or less. If you add a 5th person or more people it will double. We paid for the shared transportation through cheapcaribbean and had a great ride. We met two really great couples and only had one other stop besides our hotel. The vans were SO clean and air conditioned. The cabs are really nice... because they are faster if you are willing to pay the extra money. The only other thing i would say is that the pick up time to go home was SO much earlier than our flight. To be honest, you don't need more than 1.5 hours to get through customs and everything else (and I was searched 3 times before I got on the flight for who knows what reason). We arrived and got through customs and to our gate in a matter of 30 minutes. We wished we had a cab and could have left much later.
TNA1023
Depends on how many ppl you have! We had 4 and booked with Canada Transfer for 140 round trip, which ended up being cheaper than the other options. There are many shuttle services like CT.
tanyatoodles
The 50 round trip is better for this resort. It's an hour and 25 mins one way from the airport. They do thought return you to your return flight really early.

Yes. Depending on the package you have purchased you will be entitled to dine in some menu restaurants as well. The free buffets are always available. The menu restaurants must be reserved but the meals are included in your package.

Yes. All restaurant food included.
Make sure you make your reservations immediately upon arrival because the resort is crowded and the restaurants fill up fast.

How do we make advance reservation for room and restaurants?7 answers
5 years, 69 months ago
Vinh
You can contact customer service at CheapCaribbean.com to send a room request to the resort, it is based on availability and we cannot guarantee it but we are more than happy to send your request. In regards to the dinner reservations you can email the resort at: info.coba@bahia-principe.com or call them at 011 (52) 984 875 50 00 to get more information. It may be more cost effective to email them because the phone call is an international call.
LizCC
You need to book them at the time of arrival. They do not book the restaurants in advance.
estelle67
you cant make advance reservations for the restaurants, you have to have a room and be checked in, just reserve as soon as you get there

Try Cheapcarribbean.com

You have to speak to someone at the Public Relations desk after you check-in. The desk is only open from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. I waited a long time in line to make my reservations and it was limited availablity if you want to eat at a decent time. So if possible, do this the first day you arrive.

The air port is approx. 1 hour drive, yet you must remember, when taking the "shared" transportation they will be dropping people off at other resorts along the way. We left the airport at approx. 11 AM, the bus itinerary stated we would arrive at our resort by 3pm. Can you imagine driving in a bus almost as long as it took us to travel by air? fortunately the bus was not full, and we arrived at approx. 1:00 PM. I suggest paying a little more and getting the "private" transfer. It worked out ok for us, but with a full bus and you never know when that is going to happen, it could turn into a nightmare.

Which resort (Coba, Akumal or Tulum is the Hacienda Dona complex located? My son is asking about the nightclub and we're unsure which resort would be close to the nightclub? Thanks

The Hacienda Dona is located on the Tulum property.
CaitlinCC
I am not sure where the Hacienda Dona complex located, but all three resords Coba, Akumal, and Tulun is 5 minutes walking distance, and if you take a golf car even less. The golf cars run every 5 minutes :)
OlgaDena
The Hacienda is located at the front entrance of the resort. You have to pick the shuttle that drops off and picks up at that location. It's closest to Tulum.
Sunshine6870
The Hacienda is at the very front of the resort. The closest resort lobby to the Hacienda is the Tulum lobby, but there are trams and golf carts that take people to all the lobbies to and from the Hacienda all day and night until 2am
Snflwrgrl187
Tulum is closer but there's a tram that goes to each lobby of all the resorts, so it really doesn't matter which one you stay at.
bumom
its actually located right at the entrance of the whole resort. not at any specific complex

It's at Hacienda Isabel. It's not a club per se, more like an area with a bar and a pit for a dance floor.

Tulum is closest to the Hacienda
Beach623
Hacienda is across from Tulum resort, but you can get there from any of the locations with their trams that run very frequently all over the resorts.

If you are allowed a regular suite with 2 queen beds and sofa bed, this will work for you.
Sonia2016
The Junior Suite Superior ( I think this is the standard room) can have two double beds and a sleeper sofa so one room may work for you. Some rooms adjoin though, so maybe you would like that for privacy? Younger kids are often free?? If they are older (12+), I would get two rooms adjoining. Put one adult in each room at reservation time

For hands-on expertise regarding all the ins and outs of each resort, we recommend contacting one of our Beach Experts at 1.800.915.2322. Our agents have visited the properties we have available and can answer all of your questions from their first-hand experiences with each resort.
SamCC
It's not right on water, but it was built in and around the jungle area and the beach. It's huge. There are Mexican raccoons, Iguanas, wild birds, and other animals around. Yes, they are safe and don't hurt anyone. Yes, tweens and children will enjoy it. It has a water park specifically for children and different entertainment areas all over the resort that will be free if you book all-inclusive.
Janah
No, It is not right on the water. You might walk to the beach or just take a local (hotel) transportation to get to it.
alcuesta
No and yes. Coba only has the pools. You must take a short shuttle ride to the beach.

No it is not on the water. My tween/early 20s kids did not have much fun. There are a ton of families with young children.

How far is the shopping area from the resort5 answers
4 years, 59 months ago
CONNECTICUT
This resort does have a few shops on property. There is also shopping offer in the nearby area at Playa del Carmen which is 25 minutes away, and Tulum which is 20 minutes from the resort.
CaitlinCC
The resort itself has shopping stores, but if you are thinking shops in town, we didn't go to the towns for fear of getting ripped off. But if you go with someone familiar with the places and speaks Spanish, then go for it. The shopping area per the resort would be in Hacienda Isabel. This is where the courtyard is as well with the sports bar and the disco.
Janah
It is about 20-25 minutes from Playa del Carmen. We took public transportation for $3.50 usd each way as opposed to a $50 usd cab.
Beach623
The hacienda in right inside the resort area, within minutes. Prices are sometimes less expensive than if you go outside the resort. So save your time and money, shop right inside the resort. Remember to always bargain.
Sonia2016
The resort had a ton of shopping and souvenir hops right on the premises you never had to leave. They do however offer an excursion that takes you shopping if you still need it
Sambambaby
You can take the resort transport to the Hacienda where they have a LARGE place to shop and also a bar and casino.

Grand Bahia Principe Coba is located 60 minutes from Cancun International Airport (CUN), 25 minutes from Playa del Carmen and 20 minutes from Tulum.

It's close to both Akumal and Playa, but It's farther from Cancun itself I think.
Janah
The resort is very close to Akumal beach. it is south of Playa del Carmen
trckrwyf
Playa del Carmen and Akumal
Beach623
past Playa del Carmen - takes about 1.5 hours transport from airport (unless you have a van that stops at more than your location on the way) - worth the extra drive, the most beautiful.

You have access to all the properties except Sian Kaan.

With our package, we could also utilize tulum resort only. I think it needs to be spelled out though in description from cheapcaribbean, which resorts are included.

Access to tulum as well

You can go to all the other areas in the resort. They tell you that you are not allowed to go to the luxury parts but we did and nobody said anything to us. The staff working the bars there are very laid back, esp if they see that you have tip money in hand. They will never deny you.

How is the snorkeling in the end of Aug/early Sept?3 answers
Are there reefs at the hotel's beach area that are easy to get to? Is the water fairly clear for snorkeling in the reefs or in the water by the hotel beach? Are there lots to see when snorkeling at the hotel's beach?
4 years, 52 months ago
Dallas, TX
There is a reef close and easy to see from the resort. The water is clear and fun to swim in. The currents and wave action won't bother you if you're familiar with swimming in the ocean. I will admit, though, that the reef isn't as colorful as others I've been to in the Caribbean. There's plenty of fish and reef life (urchins, etc) but not postcard-type stuff. It's still worth the time.
I saw a few brave swimmers swim right out and snorkel on it from the beach at the resort. It's a lot easier, though, to sign up for any of the daily snorkeling trips. Snorkel, mask and flipper rental is free and easy (just ask any time and they'll hand it over no questions asked). The snorkel trip is only about 200-300 feet away from the main dock - in sight of the resort balcony.
I'm a good swimmer and after they asked if I was, indeed, a good swimmer, the snorkeling trip boat driver let me ditch the life preserver, so no problem there. Other beginners seemed to still enjoy the snorkeling trip. Round trip time on the snorkeling trip is 2 hours, which was plenty.
HoneyMoonier
Please check with the resort directly for the most up to date information regarding snorkeling at the resort. Their international phone number is: 01152 (to dial out) 984-875-5000.
TimCC
They do not let you go very far it is blocked off. One area on the south end you can see fish...more of a children level of snorkeling ...Which can be ok for little ones. MUST bring water shoes

For an additional amount, Cheapcaribbean.com offers contracted airport transportation for a smooth transition from the airport to the resort and back on day of return. If you would like to try to set something up with the resort, please check with the resort directly to see if they offer transportation as it is not included.

4 years, 50 months ago

You can smoke in the open areas.
LizCC
No smoking in the rooms but each room has a deck with an ashtray on it. It was a smoker friendly resort. There were ashtrays on all of the tables by the pool. And outside of every lobby there were a lot of ashtrays, just no smoking inside of buildings.
Supergirllll
Smoking is allowed on the property, but I don't believe it is IN the room. There is a balcony right outside the room that I would assume you can smoke on.
KaylaB22
yes smoking is permitted on property at designated areas, just not in the rooms, they have ashtrays on all the balconey's with 2 chairs and a table

The casino is at the Hacienda. The golf cart trolley will carry you there from your resort.

Where do we eat dinner?5 answers
This resort is listed as all-inclusive, but we can only have 2 all-la-carte dinners per 5 night stay. So where are we supposed to eat for the other 3 nights?
3 years, 44 months ago

They do have their buffet restaurant, Kukulcan, which does not require reservations and you can eat there for any nights you do not eat at an a-la-carte restaurant.
JeannieCC
There are buffets located in the main lobby and the premier lobby. The buffet in the premier lobby offer breakfast and lunch and at dinner time only reservations are allowed. The restaurant in the main lobby offers the buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And the buffet options are incredible. So much food to choose from.

At the buffet

You can always dine at the buffet which has great variety of foods every night. But if you walk around the resort, you might be able to get into other restaurants, keep in mind that sometimes ppl don't show up for their dinner reservations for one reason or another and that spot then becomes available. Environmental Levy Fee
The Municipalidad of Solidaridad in the Rivera Maya is one of the most beautiful places in the Mexican Caribbean. Tourism has been instrumental in driving the economic and social development of the region. In an effort to continue to preserve, conserve and beautify the destination, the Municipality of Solidaridad has implemented a small environmental levy on visitors effective September 1, 2017. Hotels will collect 20 Mexican pesos per room per day on check out; the proceeds will be deposited in an environmental trust to fund local projects. The Municipalidad of Solidaridad thanks you for your understanding and support of this worthwhile endeavor. Thank you and enjoy your visit.
