Great Escape!
We had a relaxing and pampered week of fun in the sun! Many options for food, fun and relaxing. Highly recommend the hydrospa.
Overall this was a great romantic and relaxing getaway! The grounds and pools were fabulous with lots of shade from multiple cabana beds, palm trees, and those straw umbrella huts to avoid the direct sun throughout the day. There were frequent golf cart stops to transport you around the resort. The room was very nice with a jacuzzi and balcony with a hammock. I found the bed to be very comfortable and slept well. The downside for me was the food. I expected a gourmet food experience with exceptional quality and was disappointed. The food was average to slightly above average although there were many restaurants on the property for options. I didn't like the constant attempts to upsell at additional costs things like wine, steak and lobster. The personal concierge was a nice touch but only if you'll be purchasing the dinner experiences and off resort activities. If you're not, then they can't be bothered to help you. Overall, I would still return to the resort, but with lowered expectations.
Took a short trip to Eldorado Royale this time. Have been to resort a few times and love it. Everything is truly 5 star. From the beginning to the end. They go out of their way to make sure you have anything you want. Great restaurant and food selection with a bonus “Mexican night”. Which was awesome. Authentic food, mariachi band, culture. Drinks never got low, from day 1 to day 4. The bars can make you anything, even though they have a menu of drinks. Also, not just any liquor. Top shelf choices. Plenty of activities to do to keep you busy. Would probably try to go back between March- September. Went in October and it rained most of the days. This resort blows others we have been to away. They do cater to VIP members, but we are not members and have a blast every time. The staff is personable and likes to get to know you. Very respectful and well mannered. Ready to book another trip already. I didn’t like the Amstar transfer process. They sold our phone number the first day and we were getting calls all week from different numbers in Mexico. Not nice Amstar.

Wine selection of El Dorado Royale3 answers
Other website reviewers comment that the house wine selection is terrible - even though the food is gourmet. To get decent wine, they "upsell" you and you have to pay terribly inflated prices. Any thoughts?
We are trying to decide between El Dorado Royale and one of the Palace resorts (with their $1500 credits). It is just my husband and I - and we are looking for clean rooms/resort (perhaps adult only), good food and wine selection, great pools/beach - really enjoy snorkeling.
We stayed Moon Palace years ago.
Any recommendations or recent visit comments would be greatly appreciated.

The El Dorado Royale does offer a seletcion of wines that are included in the all-inclusive package. There is also an "Exquisite wine list" that is not included in the all-inclusive, and would be an additional cost. The pricing would be based upon your individual wine selections.
KristinCC
My husband and I stayed at the El Dorado Royale for our honeymoon October 2008 and it was amazing! We aren't big wine drinkers however we did order a bottle one night and it was good but pretty expensive-but with the resort being all-inclusive we didn't really mind paying for one thing! We snorkeled just around the beach area and there were a lot of colorful fish! Alot of the reviews we had read before we went warned about the sand bags in the water and that they were ugly-but we didn't think one thing about them being there, it actually helped with the water being calm and also housed a bunch of different fish! Our room was amazing with a huge private jet bath and the bed was very comfortable. The food was excellent everywhere-even the pizza at the little outside restaurant by the pool was amazing! The room service was also great! If you get up early enough you can save a beach chair under one of the covered areas (if you want shade) becuase the beach was a little busy but it was very beautiful. We also took a tour to the ruins and it was pretty neat- also to the natural waterpark where we got to snorkel and inner-tube and swim to some caves that you can snorkel in! I highly recommend the El Dorado Royale- it was amazing! hope this helps!!

It is true that the wines have incredibly inflated prices. The first night we spent $44 for a bottle of pretty awful Mexican wine. We didn't make that mistake again.
I would not recommend El Dorado if you want a great beach. The beach was pretty disappointing. Very rocky and lots of sandbags.
BCHLVR
Even though we didn't have any wine, we did see an enormous wine rack in the Italian style restaurant, those around us having wine seem to be enjoying their selections. I kinda do wish I was more of a wine knowledgeable person, but only have drank the sweeter, white wines. I am not much on the Merlots, etc. red wines.

Are there plenty of beach lounge chairs?2 answers
At previous resorts, we had problems with too few chairs on the beach. Guests would reserve chairs with towels all day and this tainted our vacations significantly. Can we expect beach loungers available at all times?
7 years, 89 months ago
Ny
The El Dorado Royale Spa Resort does provide beach chairs or loungers for guests in addition to beach butler services. The resorts do their best to ensure that beach chairs are available for all guests, however during peak travel season this may be more difficult.
MellissaCC
We went mid-October and totally had our choice of chairs and cabanas... Amazing. The only exception might be the activities and main pools which seemed to be a little crowded, but we liked the beach and the smaller more quiet pools.

Is the beach quiet and free of music?4 answers
We are searching for a truly quiet beach. I want to hear the ocean without any extra noise. At other so-called quiet resorts, music was audible on the beach. Even distant music when you can only hear a little is too much. I need a completely music free beach.
7 years, 89 months ago
Ny
The El Dorado Royale Spa Resort does offer activities during the day from water aerobics to beach volleyball that may result in music being played on or near the beach. The resort offers 1 mile of private Punta Brava beach property so there may be quieter parts but it is not guaranteed that there is a portion that will be completely silent.
MellissaCC
most of the time we were there there was no music that I could hear. It is a very long beach area, so lots of places to be alone. There would be times, though, that there would be music. Mostly at night when the club areas were open.
audiodog
The part of the Casitas is perfect. You can allways find a secluded place either in the hotel or in the beach.

At every meal and every restaurant you are asked if you have any allergies or food restrictions. This leads me to believe the restaurants will accommodate food needs.

What's the condition of beach?2 answers
Is the beach clean and the water blue and clear? Is the water motionless or are there some waves? Is there seaweed?
6 years, 82 months ago
USA
This resort is located in the heart of the Riviera Maya, facing the beautiful Mexican Caribbean, El Dorado Royale has more than one mile of unspoiled Punta Brava Beach to offer guests. Majority of the time the water is clear blue, however depending on the current weather, the clarity of the water as well as the amount of seaweed can vary. This resort offers beach butlers offering guests everything they need from drinks to magazines to picnic baskets.
CaitlinCC
Nice clean beach, clear blue water, waves blocked by sandbags intended to protect the reef. Only gentle waves to the shoreline, even in high winds because of this. Little seaweed reaches the beach. I love the sand and clear water of Mexico and El Dorado did not disappoint.

Are there palapas set up to the point where finding an UNshaded area is difficult? Looking at the photos, the palapas and cabanas located on the beach are wall-to-wall.
6 years, 82 months ago
USA
This resort does offer a good amount of pool and beach seating. However the amount of seating can vary depending on the occupancy at the resort during your travel dates. For more information please contact the resort directly.
CaitlinCC
Not at all. Depending on the time of day, several are not shaded much. The casitas area has palapas on the beach with lounges in front of them so you can move between the shade and the sun. I didn't feel like they were wall to wall.
Ouangel14
Finding sun is no issue here. There is plenty of open sandy beach, unless you come during peak times.

Is topless tanning allowed on this beach? Can men wear speedo or swim bikini and if so is it common?

El Dorado Royale is an Adults Only property, the resort may allow topless sunbathing on their beach. We do suggest contacting the resort directly as they would be best to assist you. The email address found on their website to contact them directly is infodoradoroyale@eldorado-resorts.com.mx.

Men should not wear speedo's they are gross. I did not see one topless women there.
GoodTime25878
There were several people who tanned topless. They weren't up running around, advertising it, but laying in their chairs. It was a pretty laid back beach.
NLM012
While everyone wasn't tanning topless, plenty were so if it's your thing, go for it! Also several men wearing speedos, and again, I don't think anyone thought anything of it.

It's not illegal to go topless, I saw a couple of topless woman. Men can wear speedos. I only saw a few while I was there.

Do you Offer Katamuran's from the resort2 answers
We would like to take a Katamuran around and have lunch/drinks out on the water. Is this offered here at this resort, or close by to book?
5 years, 70 months ago
NJ
This resort does not have catamarans on site, however, when booking through CheapCaribbean.com we can help you set up an excursion outside the resort that is on a catamaran.
Below is the full description of the Riviera Maya Sailing excursion.
The price per adult is $100.00 and the price per child is $60.00.
Our experienced crew will set anchor at the world's second largest barrier reef, where you'll explore the underwater world of the Caribbean Sea with professional snorkel guides. Spot corals and exotic fish or stretch out on deck and work on your tan. We serve you a buffet lunch with a delicious grilled lobster or steak as the main dish and tropical drinks from our full open bar. Good music, dancing, animation and our friendly crew will make your sailing dreams come true!
BethCC
We took an excursion through one of the tour companies that are available on site at the resort (we used AmStar because they provided our transfer from the airport and were very pleased). The excursion was a sailing trip on a Catamaran to a state park area just south of Cozumel. We set anchor there and snorkeled, had lunch, and then sailed back to the port. Lunch, all alcoholic drinks as well as regular beverages were included.
The trip was from 8 am until around 3:30 pm and we had a wonderful time.

American Dollars okay to bring5 answers
In reading reviews, we see conflicting information if El Dorado takes pesos or US dollar? We realize it's an all inclusive, however, tipping the staff periodically is something we like to do for their hard work, and buying small items throughout the local area.
5 years, 70 months ago
Wisconsin
Almost all resorts in the Cancun/Riviera Maya will accept US dollars if you were to use that towards gratuities. Be advised All Inclusive resorts do not require tips as it is included in your package price.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please call us at 1.800.915.2322.
SamCC
Yes, we tipped in USD. The SPA won't take money, you have to charge everything to room, but the rest of the staff is happy to accept tips in USD. Also, the gift shop accepts USD too.
AinOK
We only took US dollar and did all of our tipping with dollars. We also went into Playa del Carmen and used US dollars.
TXmom
We brought nothing but US dollars and never did exchange for pesos. The waiters and service staff accepted dollars happily and the everywhere we went to spend money accepted dollars as well. Credit cards (major ones especially Visa) were accepted all over the resort and locally too.
serpentineshel
Just got back 10/25/14 and all we tipped in was US dollars and they were completely happy with that. I would say 95% of the ppl did. They will convert to pasos at front desk, however be ware that they will not convert back for you.

Swim Up Jr. Suite vs. Non swim up Jr. Suite4 answers
Seriously considering this resort for an upcoming vacation, although I have noticed that Cheap Caribbean does not offer the option of the Swim Up Jr Suite, I was wondering if there is an option to upgrade? Also, if you have stayed at this resort before do you recommend the swim up over the regular jr suite?
5 years, 68 months ago
Gigilaf
If the resort has availability during your time of check in, they would be more than happy to assist you with a room upgrade for an additional charge.
BethCC
You can email the resort or call a cheapcaribbean agent to make changes in your room or an upgrade
Adrianne1
We did not see any value in swim up suites and were very happy with the regular. Seemed like a querky novelty because there are so many other pool venues to choose from, and several with swim up bars.
JamesDean
I just got back from our trip 10/25 and although I did not have a swim up we wanted one and was booked. Cheap Caribbean didn't have option and was unfort booked when we got there. Saying that I would def recommend it bc the pool is packed everyday and you pretty much have to get there by 8am to get a seat. If you have a swim up you would not have to worry with this. And if you stay in the pool near the Mexican restaurant, the main pool is actually linked to your swim up so you could go strength from your room! Can't say the price difference since we couldn't do but would have loved too.

What kind of beer is served and is all taxes and gratuities included in the package?3 answers
4 years, 54 months ago
Amanda
All taxes and gratuities are already included in the total price. For the most up-to-date info on beer brands the resort carries, please contact the resort directly. You may reach them here: https://www.eldoradosparesorts.com/contact-us.html
BILLCC
The only beer at the resort, and for that matter anywhere on the island that we saw, was Red Stripe. I, myself, am a beer snob and like craft beers and was a little disappointed. There are plenty of other complimentary drinks to get, though. Anything else (besides fancy, yummy beers) is there.
We booked our package through CheapCaribbean and didn't have to pay a single cent more after paying for the package online. We brought $20 in ones for tips, but they were definitely not needed or expected at the resort. Only tip the driver to/from the airport if you want. After seeing how everybody treats you and still don't expect a tip, you'll understand: no gratuities at the resort.
HoneyMoonier
There local beer and then coronas, miller lite I think etc..
Its up to you to give any tips if you feel the service is great. I heard some people left tips for lunch/dinners and golf cart rides. Pool bars etc if you want better service tip. We always forgot our money or didnt have small change so felt bad. When we finally got some tipped more, but its up to you. I didnt see alot of people tipping, but then some people told us its rude not too.

Should I bring toiletries/sunscreen?3 answers
My fiancé and I are going for our honeymoon mid September and I'm wondering if we should pack toiletries, sunscreen, bug spray and beach towels? Or if those things are supplied?
4 years, 52 months ago
Baltimore, MD
We just got back from honeymoon and had a wonderful time. You should go!
Answering questions:
- Toiletries: Sure, bring yours, why not. Plenty of shampoo, bath soap, moisturizer are provided. Toothpaste, toothbrush, mouthwash are not provided as standard. There's a gift shop at the resort that has anything you need. Prices are reasonable, but if you like what you normally use, bring it.
- Sunscreen: We brought our own sunscreen but it didn't work (thank you, ### brand....) A bottle of the the SPF50 at the store at the resort worked a lot better. It was $7, so worth it to us. Oh -yeah, it gets sunny and you'll need it.
- Bug Spray: We didn't experience any sand fleas or mosquitoes while at the resort. Going more inland or shopping we did encounter mosquitoes, but nothing like, for instance, Houston or New Orleans or Florida
- Beach Towels: There are plenty of bath towels for showers in the bathroom. The resort also provides two bath towels in each room for the beach or pool. There are also carts at each pool to pick up and/or exchange more towels. So, no, don't bring towels.
HoneyMoonier
The resort will supply basic toiletries (i.e. soap, shampoo) as well as towels. You may also be able to purchase sunscreen at the resort's gift shops. Also, check travel.state.gov about aerosol sprays to see about bringing bug spray. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.

The seaweed that you were seeing reports of is called sargassum, it was a naturally occurring ecological issue last year and the resorts are doing all they can to make sure that it does not effect the enjoyment of their guests.

This resort does not offer any complimentary transportation. We do offer airport transportation through a contracted transfer company at an additional cost. If you have any further questions or need help booking, please call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.

No, but taxi's are cheaper from hotel to airport or else they charge $100 for a shuttle to and from the airport. I would go with Taxi's I think it was $50 that we split and then going from hotel to airport under $40

Do you have outdoor baths and showers with your rooms2 answers
The wife and I are looking for a romantic vacation for adults only and wanted to get a room with outdoor shower and tub. Thanks

None of the rooms at this resort come with outdoor shower and tub.
CCGreg
I believe there are some rooms in the Casita's (high class side) with outdoor baths. But, they come with a hefty price tag.

Each of the 9 restaurants at the El Dorado Royale offer gluten free dining options which are provided to you at the time of the meal. Please keep in mind this is subject to change at any time.
StevieCC
Yes- many. A selection of gf breads and pastries even at breakfast.
TRL2
Yes! They asked at every restaurant if we had dietary restrictions and they had a gluten free specific area at the breakfast buffets

Extra Bed1 answer
I'm traveling with some girlfriends and we have to put 3 in a room. I know one option is two double beds but that can be tight with adults sharing. Can we get an extra rollaway bed in with a king or double room? Sufficient enough for an adult to sleep on.
Thanks
3 years, 43 months ago
Mo
We can certainly request a roll-away bed, however this is on a request basis only and cannot be guaranteed. The resort always does their best to accommodate requests, but this is based upon availability.

We are planning a trip with our 6 month old. Are babies allowed?

Unfortunately not, this resort is an Adults-Only property, so no one under the age of 18 is allowed. For assistance with selecting a great, family friendly property, please call in to 800-915-2322 to speak with one of our beach experts.
JeannieCC
This is an adults only resort. There is a section on one end called Generations Riviera Maya that is family friendly, but no one under 18 is allowed in the El Dorado section.

Restaurants with beach attire3 answers
Are there any restaurants or buffets past 5 pm that allow beach attire
2 years, 34 months ago
Indiana
All restaurants require elegant casual attire
StevieCC
No. There is an outside cafe near the pool on the Generations side of the resort that we ate at in beach attire but the buffets and restaurants require clothing and sleeved shirts for men.
RandyandRandi
No. While trousers and collared shirts are recommended for men at dinner, many wear nice shorts. Dry bathing suits with cover ups are fine for breakfast and lunch.

StevieCC
Everywhere
RandyandRandi
There are permanent "palapas" at the beach. They are a palm tree trunk with a thatch roof about 7 ft square. There is a small table built-in to the post.

There are palm beach umbrellas on the beach

What are those pipes in the water?3 answers
I saw there is a ton of pipe looking things in the water at the beach. What is that??
2 years, 31 months ago
Nicole
There are some big rocks just offshore, not sure about pipes...
CCGreg
They help break the waves and help with current
Hpadgett
They have built a natural reef and wave breakers to save their beach. It is an eyesore up close, but makes a nice swimming area where the water will be calm. Lots of tropical fish you can see if you like to snorkel. Still 100% better beaches than some I have been to in the area. Soft white sand, with coral in some areas. I’m ready to go back.

Reservations for the restaurants5 answers
We are staying 5 days and I wondered if there was a limit on how many reservations you can make. I've stayed at similar places and they would only let us book I think 2 reservations at the nicer restaurants with that amount of days that we stayed.
2 years, 30 months ago
JakeS
You only need reservations for two of the restaurants, Santa Fe Grill and Fuentes. The other restaurants are first come, first serve. We only waited one night and that worked out well as we just went upstairs to the Martini Bar for a cocktail prior to dinner.
mshaw03
This resort does not have a specific limit to number of reservations allowed.
JeannieCC
Only 2 restaurants required reservations, but you can make them at all. Just tell your concierge what you want and it will happen.
12345CRZRman
Reservations are only required at the dinner theater. Everywhere else does not have reservations! One of the big reasons we decided to stay at this resort!
courtmatch11
No, but book as soon as you arrive because they fill up! Santa Fe Grill is our favorite!

Are there beds in the pool to relax?5 answers
2 years, 29 months ago
Adam
not in the pool, but all around the edges
Mgraham303
While they do not have beds in the pool, they do have beds outside of the pool in the pool area.
JeannieCC
Only if you have a swimup
BGAC1122
Yes! But they go quick. You have to get up super early and go out there and put a towel on it to mark it as taken. However, you can go out at 6:30, put a towel on it and it is safe until later when you are ready to use it. For example, I set my alarm and went and put towels on one at 6:20 and then came back at 10:00 and my towels were there no problem. But you won’t get one if you don’t get up early and do that. The beds are super comfortable though!
JLongshore
No. But you can bring lounges into the water. There are shallow shelves which would be perfect.

We went to every restaurant on the resort and I never had to wear pants. Just pack some nice collared shirts and khaki shorts and you'll be set.
Blynch
You may wish to bring some just in case. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
TimCC
No, my husband wore khaki shorts. Some places require a collared shirt for dinner for the men. But he never had a problem with pants
courtmatch11
No, there are people in shorts. But they will not let you in in flip flops!
MaggieS
We just got back and my guy did not wear long pants to any restaurants just dressy shorts.

Where is the Premium Jacuzzi Swim up on the hotel map?4 answers
I have a hotel map but where are the Premium Jacuzzi Swim up rooms on the map and any particular one to request for good sun and great oceanview?
2 years, 27 months ago
MidWest
All over the resort, several rivers
Relaxedvacationer
I believe all of the rooms are the same, either standard suite or swim up suites. I recommend the standard unless you know your neighbors and sitting outside your room in a pool with strangers didn't appeal to us.
With the swim up rooms you are on the first floor so no ocean view available. Looked like sun was available equally at all of them.
SteveTy
The premium jacuzzi suites are 1-5 & 40-44 buildings on the map.
MaggieS
We were in building 2 and had beautiful ocean view and sun until late afternoon.
