Exceeded all expectations
My wife and I have not been on a vacation in years. We also have never been to an all-inclusive resort before. We loved everything about it. We booked the flight hotel transportation and even excursions through the site. It was so nice to arrive and not have to give a credit card for incidentals. The entire staff, the entire time was so friendly. It was a pleasant experience not having the expectation to tip, because pricing includes all tips. The resort has several very nice restaurants and the food was, in our opinion, five-star. Food presentation was amazing and tasted fantastic. The beach and pool were fantastic. The staff constantly walked the resort asking if they could get you any drinks. All the drinks were complementary. Heaven on earth!
Overall, I'd not recommend this place versus others on here.
Like:
1.Very nice beach that was cleaned daily and was awesome.
2.Bar staff and drinks were pleasant and helpful.
3.Buffet had plenty of variety and was the best restaurant they had
Dislike:
1.Room cleaning only happened if you didn't have any electronics outt or even looks similar to a form of electronics
2.Not truly all inclusive. But they would try to upsell you to all inclusive by joining their privileged club.
3.More than once a day someone was asking about paying extra for beach side dining or joining their privileged club.
4. had to be privileged to get any of the booze they had on offer. If you weren't, there wasn't an option. it was on display but you were told you couldn't have that one.
5. Room service isn't included. every all inclusive I've been to has been.
6. A La Carte restaurants had an hour or longer wait times.
7. A La Carte ones didn't serve you much. Of the three times I went, two of them I went to the buffet afterward and I'm not a big person.
Cheap Caribbean was excellent in service, prices and integrity. I talked to two different agents to book my trip and get some questions answered, and they were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. I felt very confident about the trip, and everything turned out as promised. This was our first trip to Mexico, and we would definitely do it again. The all-inclusive hotel, flight and price were amazing...we hated to leave! I would not hesitate to go with Cheapcaribbean again. We stayed at the Catalonia Playa Maroma in the Riviera Maya. Beautiful beach, large pool area, clean and comfortable room, great food selection and drinks, fantastic staff and entertainment!!
It was a great girl’s trip!! Bang for your buck !! It’s a smaller, very clean and friendly resort. The beach is absolutely stunning. I highly recommend it !!

Does the price vary day to day for each trip?5 answers
One day it may be $20.00 more per person to fly and the next day it would be $200.00.

In short, yes - prices can vary depending on the day.
Some resorts charge a higher rate for travel on the weekends, and airfare can definitely fluctuate depending on your dates of travel. Holiday travel (Christmas, Easter, Spring Break, even President's Day weekend) is much more expensive that other times of year. It can also be more expensive to travel on the weekend versus traveling during the week.
KateCC
Because of business travel, usually flying on Fridays and Mondays are more expensive. Weekends also cost more because there are less flights. We have found that Wednesdays and Thursdays have the best prices.
CheapCarribean will compare prices for you by the way.
giantfan
What type of trips? We booked excursions with Olympus Tours and the prices were fabulous.
Krys
Depends on where (distance) you are coming from. I've never seen an extreme difference, seems like if you are coming from the west coast, the flights aren't as frequent and SFO standards are different than other airports, causing the inflated price. Not fair!
ulrieri
This is just the days you choose to travel. Some are more expensive then others. Seems like alot of people came in on Saturday and left on Friday. You need to look at alot of dates to find the least inexpensive.

Which resort is best for a person not able to walk much.8 answers
We are looking for an all-inclusive resort in the Mayan Riviera part of Mexico that is either Adults only or has an area reserved for adults. I've seen many resorts that are very large, which isn't a problem if they have transportation to the different areas. Or, if they have pools where you could actually swim from the rooms to the beach. I am also concerned with a huge beach (meaning distance walking through the sand to reach the ocean) with loose packed sand. I am able to walk on firm sand, but the thick sand is very difficult for me. Also, my ideal place would also have beach service and swim up bars, and restaurants aren't difficult to get reservations for, or don't require reservations. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Hi,
Thank you for considering Cheap Caribbean in planning your vacation! We have many beautiful properties in the Riviera Maya that would meet your needs. Because you have some very specific requirements I would recommend calling one of our experienced destination specialists to discuss the many options available. There is no additional charge to book your trip with an agent and they would be able to explain to your satisfaction what is available at the individual resorts.

Catalonia Playa Maroma- not a good option. VERY LONG walking distances, no swim up bars, slow beach service
Almasrainbow
Honestly, do not go with Catalonia Playa Maroma. Although a great resort, it does not match your requirements.
TraderDT
I think Catalonia will NOT be good for someone who has a difficult time walking. The buffet is a good 5-10 minute stroll down a bricky paved walkway and all the buildings are a good few minutes walk to the pool and beach with a few steps of stairs. They do not have a swim up bar. walking distance on the sand to the ocean is 2-3 minutes on soft sand. They do serve drinks to the beach but the guy will only come every 20-30 minutes and you have to wave him down if he doesn't see you. None of the restaurants require reservations. We never had to wait for a table. They all open only from 6:30 to 10pm (for dinner restaurants). There is no adults only area but there were very little children when I stayed. I don't know another resort to recommend but I don't think you will enjoy Catalonia if you don't want to do too much walking. Good luck!
taiwanesefoo
Catalonia Privileged Beach has a bit of a long walk from the main lobby (where the breakfast buffet is) to the beach. Depending where your room is, you're somewhere between the lobby and beach.
There is no beach service for drinks and no swim-up bar. On the beach, there is a plastic/paved walk-way to get down from the pool area so you can get to the lounge chairs without walking on sand. The walk from the lounge chair on the beach to the water is not very far.
The restaurants did not require reservations for us in October, I'm not sure if that may be different in the busy season.
ScubaDiver
The rooms were far away from the check-in and restaurants depending on if you upgraded or not. No swim up bars. Beach was beautiful and not far from pool area.
beefy
Children are allowed at the resort, but we didn't encounter very many. We loved this resort, but there is a long central path from the main building (check-in, buffet restaurant, bar, nightclub) to the beach. There is no swim up bar, but the beach bar is located directly between the large pool and the beach. As far as getting on the beach, there are some walkways to get you partway on the beach (to the area with the lounge chairs), but then you'll have to walk on the fine sand the rest of the way to the water. I would say the distance from beach to water is medium - maybe 50 ft? Also, we had no trouble walking right in to the special restaurants here - no reservations necessary. November was a great time to travel. The resort was probably half full.
LisaShoe
I hope you were able to find the resort you needed in the time since you posted this question. Catalonia Playa Maroma is definitely not for someone who cannot walk long distances. I'm sure they have certain golf cart services but not around the clock. It's a far walk from the lobby to the beach. We stayed close to the beach, but it's a far walk back to the lobby area since that's where the buffet is located. To put it mildly, I walked 11K-13K steps each day we were there & 23K steps when we did the excursion.

The hotel does offer options for night life:
Lobby Bar
Lobby bar with both day and night time activities. This is the perfect place to meet family and friends for a good time. Open 24 hours.
Disco Bar
This hotel bar-discotheque opens at night, so that you can have a drink in a relaxing environment before shifting into party mode until dawn. Open 11am-2am.
Beach Bar
Open 11am-10pm.
Smoking is permitted in designated areas.
For specific information on excursions, please visit www.cheapcaribbean.com for detailed descriptions.

About excursions: we did two and both were very disappointing. The buses spent a lot of time picking up tourists from hotels all along the coast. Then we didn't have to time visit everything that had been announced initially. When meals were included they were rather bad.
There are three providers of excursions, grouped by language: Spanish, French and Italian. The two we took were in Spanish and Italian. As I say both were awful. I heard good things about some excursions in French but have no first-hand experience of them.
In general I would recommend renting a car and doing any excursion on your own. It will be a better use of time and money.

This resort is located 25 miles from Cancun International Airport (CUN), 12.5 miles from Playa del Carmen.
KellyCC
No, this resort is a few km north of Playa del Carmen. Cancún must be 40 - 50 minutes away by car. We actually don't know for sure because we didn't go there. This is more of a resort for families and honeymooners, if you are looking for nightlife there may be better choices.
familiade4
It is about 20 minutes for Playa where there is a ton to do.
julester
i think its about 35-40 mins away.
CtTravelers
No, its about a 30min cab/shuttle ride
dleaj77
NO!!! You are in Riviera Maya, a good 40 minutes or more from Cancun. In fact, the resort isn't really close to anything. Your nearest off-property option for nightlife is Playa del Carmen and even that is a taxi ride away. Definitely nothing within walking distance. If you're looking for a big party this is not your place.

We are staying for 7 nights, can we eat every night at an a la carte restaurant?7 answers
6 years, 73 months ago
San Jose
For a seven night stay, you should receive three guaranteed reservations in the a la carte restaurants.
LaurenCC
You get a punch card for the 4 restaurants and you can eat at each of them only once. The rest of the time was in the buffet. Which actually some of the food was better there. Plus i would recommend going into Playa Del Carmen (20 min drive) for a local restaurant.
julester
I would say probably only four nights. There really is something for everyone at the buffet though.
CarolGBellinghamMassUsa
we stayed 5 nights and was only allowed 3 a la carte vouchers. The buffet is amazing though, much better than the small serving a la carte restaurants.
CtTravelers
We had the Privileged package and received enough vouchers for three nights (out of five) at the a la carte restaurants. We had to eat at the buffet two nights. The buffet was not nearly as good as the a la carte restaurants but there were plenty of options there to find a satisfying meal.
Staciesg
We were there 5 nights and could only eat a la carte 3 times. So more than likely you you will be able to eat a la carte maybe 5 times, the other 2 nights buffet (which is horrible) or pay to eat at the restaurants.
BostonTraveler12
Not sure how it was when you asked this question, but we were just there last week & they gave us 1 voucher for 2 free meals per family; to have dinner/meals at one of the 3 available a la carte restaurants. We tried Tio Pedro, which was ok but the buffet was slightly better. Tortuga was the steak place & it was quite pleasant- food & air-conditioned! So to answer your question, I believe you can eat there each night but they only give you 2 nights free, per family.

This property does not take American dollars for cash? Whats the deal?6 answers
6 years, 73 months ago
Colorado
Please be advised that the official currency of Mexico is the Mexican Peso.
MariaCC
We were able to use our debit / credit card and the is an ATM machine and currency exchange in the lobby.
Wags05
I wondered about that too. They do have an exchange window in the lobby, which I used when going to Playa Del Carmen, but they do take american money downtown. At the hotel, they just charge everything to your room and you can pay with a debit or credit card when you check out. It probably is the easiest way. They don't even take pesos at the gift shops. We left tips in us dollars.
CarolGBellinghamMassUsa
You won't really want or need to buy anything while your there though. The gift shops are extremely expensive. They have vendors come on Tuesday and Sunday nights that sell touristy items and they do accept cash. They accept cash tips as well. The olympus tours that I dealt with for my excursion excepted cash as well.
CtTravelers
They only take pesos or credit card. You would have to exchange your dollars for pesos there and the rate is not as good as it would be in town.
Boomstar
Vert annoying. Everything gets charged to the room. I stayed at another resort in Mexico and you could use cash American or Pesos. They give you a $300 credit then when you go over that the call the front desk to increase it to $900. Very strange and unnecessary.

is jet skiing nearby how close are the ruins and underwater museaum7 answers
6 years, 73 months ago
rainy
There is not Jet Skiing in the area. Any of the excursions are approx 30 - 60 minutes away from the resort depending on which on you choose.
KristenCC
You can jet ski right outside the hotel, as well as para-sailing and kayaks. We rented jet skis twice.
The Tulum ruins are the closest. (about an hour) We rented a car and it was easy. Then we snorkeled right there on paradise beach. The boat took us out for a look at the ruins from the ocean. There is another ruin called cuda? I think that is further, but you can still walk on the actual pyramid. The biggest one- chi chin itza is pretty far. Like 3 hours! And most people take a bus tour. Didn't sound fun to me.
julester
You can get on a jet ski just to the right of the beach at the resort. There was parasailing options too, not included, not sure on price but I'm sure could be negotiated.
We did Tulum ruins and Xel-Ha. On a map it's less than an hr but we picked other people up at other resorts but were there in under 2 hrs, maybe even 1 1/2.
Lasieg
There are jet skis to rent right there. The ruins are about a half hour away. I don't know about the underwater museum.
CarolGBellinghamMassUsa
jet skiing is available for purchase right on the beach next to the resort, the ruins is about a 45-50min ride. Underwater museum I'm not sure of.
CtTravelers
There were at least two jet ski places right on the beach and several other water activities (e.g. parasailing). These businesses were not part of the hotel. We rented jet skis for $70 per half hour and had a great experience. We inquired about parasailing and the cost was $80/pp or 2 for $150. We ran out of time and never ended up doing the parasailing. There are excursions to the ruins and other nearby tourist places through the hotel. We did not do them but I think most all are within an hour of the hotel (some, like Xel Ha, are even closer). Hope that helps!
Staciesg
Jet skiing & sailing (along with other water sports) are available right next to the resort beach property. There's a shop right to the left & a little further down on the right as well. Tulum Mayan Ruins & Adventures are about an hr from this resort. Sounds far but that is actually pretty good compared to other excursions we looked into. Wait to buy your trip with the Cheap Carribean rep when you meet him to arrange for your shuttle pickup back to the airport. He'll be able to give you a better discount without the hassle. Ps. the ATV adventure was incredible but the cenote swimming fell a little short. It was beautiful but literally too short of a time spent exploring it. Hope this helps!

What is the dining situation at the Catalonia Privileged Maroma resort?6 answers
I've read that there are 7 restaurants and you get meal tickets depending on the length of your stay (in various reviews) - if you stay in a privileged room at this resort, how many meal tickets do you get for a 6 night stay (this is for the a la carte restaurants and not the buffet)? Are you able to go to the restaurants and be charged for the meal, if so, what is the cost for this? Thank you in advance!
5 years, 72 months ago
jmmess
A la carte restaurants require reservations, however a la carte dining guarantee vouchers are issued based on number of nights booked as follows: For five to seven night stays, guests will receive three reservations guaranteed in the a la carte restaurants.
CaitlinCC
We just got back from our trip. There are 4 restaurants that you get a punch card for and can only go there once each. (steak house, tapas, mexican, and italian) We talked about paying to go back also, but ended up not being super excited about any of them, so never found out about the pricing. The buffet food was probably the best surprisingly. I would recommend going into Playa for dinner one night.
julester
we got 3 ticktes. However, we were not impressed with the a la carte restaurants. We had a better dinner at the buffet on the Mexican night vs the Mexican restaurant
If you want to pay extra for a restaurant go outside the hotel
lulucita
We were priveledged, and we stayed eight days. We got four dinners at the three specialty restaurants, and one dinner at the restaurant above the beach bar. You can also have lunch at the restaurant above the beach bar every day or at the buffet at Tortuga, at the beach intstead of going all the way to the regular buffet, which is in the lobby. That is only if you are priveledged. The buffet is good though. Every night there is a different theme. They also had two lunctime cookouts on the beach. I don't think you can pay for meals at the specialty restaurants.
CarolGBellinghamMassUsa
I'm not sure how many you'll get for 6 night stay but don't let that deter you from going. We didn't even use all of our tickets. I am not sure if you can be charged for the meals but we saw prices for certain wines.
Seacreature
Not sure about the cost of the meals but we stayed 5 nights and got 3 dinner vouchers for the a la carte restaurants. Trust me, you'll probably want to go to the buffet over the restaurants though. The restaurants had basically the same food that was served at the buffet but with one major difference, the serving size. You will most definitely leave the a la carte restaurants still hungry. There were only 4 a la carte restaurants that I saw, I really don't think there was 7, then one big buffet which was great! They had a lobster dinner special at the Terrace restaurant that was $40 for two people but I didn't see the size of the lobster.

I'm not sure about the free shuttle but there are taxis that can take you. We went to Coco Bongo through the Olympus Tours excursion and paid $55 each for the night including open bar, shuttle to and from, and express line tickets. Perhaps Olympus tours has an option for just a shuttle service?

Is there a dress code for the restaurants?8 answers
4 years, 57 months ago
Tugirl
Yes there is a dress code which is strictly enforced by a rude hostess
honeymoonerBP
There is not a strict dress code for the restaurants, but you do need to wear shoes. You can't just walk in from the beach or pool barefoot.
wellfitchick
The only thing is that you cannot wear beach clothes to eat in the restaurants. You have to have shorts and a shirt of some sort on while you are there - they say for hygiene reasons.
oopsie171
Not really. We wore swimsuits to the buffet, and shorts or summer dresses to the actual restaurants. Very laid back feel throughout the whole resort!
LoWoodard
Yes. For three of the restaurants women should wear casual dresses or shorts w sleeves and no flip flops. Men can wear shirts and shorts. One restaurant requires dressier clothing.
frany
Yea later in the evening it is casual wear.... no bathing suits.
Savy2706
There is a posted dress code but we found that even at the nicest restaurant it was fairly laid back. My husband wore pants and nicer sandals (leather flip flops) and I wore a casual dress with sandals every night. Wouldn't bother with dress shoes unless you really want to dress up.

Are you able to snorkel for FREE? I wanna just walk off beach and into water. Need to know if I should pack gear? I don't wanna pay or do any excursions. When I was in Punta Cana, swimming area was roped off to protect swimmers from parasail boats.

This resort does charge additional for snorkel gear rental. For pricing please contact the resort directly.
CaitlinCC
Randy, I did not see anyone snorkeling. The beach is roped off.
Lovthebeach
I highly doubt it. The ocean isn't really swimmable due to the rough surf and they had warning flags every day we were there. The only snorkel gear we saw was used in the pools for some reason and it looked like people brought their own.

Is there a shopping center within the resort?9 answers
Most resorts in rivera maya have a small shopping center for gifts, does this one have one? thanks.
3 years, 43 months ago
NY
There is shopping available for gifts and such nearby the resort.
LizCC
There were three gift shops down near the pool area, plus a local vendor who sold Mexican pottery. Every night vendors would set up their carts in the lobby and sell their crafts. It was a nice assortment of souvenirs, and we bought several items there.
Tommygunzz
There are a couple of very small shops and one guy with a stand by the pool selling bracelets, necklaces and other small souvenirs.
Corrie
Several stands set up 2-3 times during the week. There are also several small shops on ground. Prices were higher than the airport . If you want to shop go into Playa Del Carmen. It will cost you about $60 RT or maybe more.
mushroomlady
This resort had 3 shops in it by the beach for gifts or small items needed.

Yes, and a mini mart and a liquor store
FoodiesfromVirginia
Yes- this resort has a small shopping plaza right before you reach the pool/beach. There's a mini-mart for your basic needs; swimwear shop, liquor shop & tshirt/souvenir shop. There's also vendors that set up on different days for more souvenir options, but for that is worth it to take a short trip to 5th Ave in Playa del Carmen for the day. :)

Yes, there were multiple shops within the resort to buy souvenirs or anything that you may have forgotten at home.

What is the beach like is it on the property?
3 years, 41 months ago
Arisfari
The property is beachfront and located on a white sand stretch of Maroma beach, one of the more renowned beaches in Riviera Maya.
CCGreg
Maroma Beach is awesome. It's listed as one of the top 10 beaches in the world. It's wide and long and fun to walk in either direction from the hotel. Beautiful clean white sand.
Some seaweed washes up during the night, but it's cleaned away every morning. The seaweed itself isn't that nasty, slimy kelp. It's actually not all that bad. I didn't notice any seaweed in the water itself, and the sea had a sandy bottom.
Tommygunzz
soft endless white sand, clear blue waters, it is one of the top 10 beaches in the world.

If you book Catalonia privilege maroma do you have access to the bars and restaurants at Catalonia Riviera Maya?

Maryland
The Catalonia Privilege Maroma does not have exchange privileges with the Catalonia Riviera Maya. However you can always ask the resort if they will allow you to use the other property at an additional fee.
CCCasey
Ok so this is where it got a little confusing for us- aparently when you are booking you are checking into Catalonia Playa Maroma. Catalonia PRIVILEDGE is an upgrade option that gives you ocean views & access to the other special bar/pool areas. There were other perks but seeing that we had kids we already knew it was going to be out of our price range so we didn't bother.

I believe they did have a basketball/tennis court, but I can't be too sure if it was for the Catalonia or the Amarte. Theme nights are always subject to change, please contact the resort directly for that information.

It wasn't so much theme as what went on at the theater. There was a Lion King night, very well presented and adapted. There was a Mexican night with Mariachi and dancers. There was a beach night which was cancelled because of rain but was moved to the lobby which is huge and there was live music and people danced all night with the animation team. There was a karaoke night... And a rock and love night. After the shows the fun is moved to the lobby and disco area. It is all in good fun!

The beach here is beautiful! Known for its white sand coastline and crystal-clear waters, as well as its coral reef, that is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, which is the second longest one in the world. Punta Maroma beach has been voted as one of the Top Best Beaches.
JeannieCC
The beach was pristine white sand and a crew using a bobcat to scoop up the seaweed every tide kept it beautiful.
TheSwells
The beach was amazing here! Nice & cool, perfect for helping to fight the heat/humidity. We struggled a little with the seaweed, but there was enough waves that it came & went - no big deal. Loved the beach huts & beds to lounge on and of course the personal drink services too!
LoveRome
The beach was the best part. The sand was powder-soft. The water was turquoise and once you're in it, the water is completely see-through. This resort has a ton of lounge chairs, a lot of them covered if you're getting too much sun.

Time between arrival and check-in2 answers
My flight arrives @ 9:00 A.M. and check-in is @ 3:00 P.M. What do I do with myself and luggage in between? Will there be food available then? I will be coming with a group of 8 adults and 5 children.
2 years, 31 months ago
Texas
Most properties are willing to hold your baggage at the front desk and allow you to utilize the facilities including the all-inclusive.
JeannieCC
I had pretty much the same problem. Check out time for guest is 12pm and they need time to clean the rooms. You are able to check in as you as you get there but you won't be able to go to your rooms. They will give you wrist bands stating you staying at that resort and are able to use all of their facilities in the mean time. Your luggage stays in the lobby with the staff. It's safe nobody bothers them. And around 2pm -3pm you can check to see if your room is ready. Hope this helps.
Snegron
We had the same issue! They will keep your bags safely until you are able to check in. My best advice is to arrive already in your beach/pool gear with a few pesos for drinks (that you have converted with your bank- we used wells fargo) & come back to the lobby @3p to check into your room. It was super hot when we arrived & only our kids were in their swimming clothes so we were kind of miserable until our rooms were ready. Lucky for us, we kept checking with the hotel reception & our rooms were ready by 1p (they also accept friendly pesos ::ahem::)
Yes, on the food. The buffet should be open for breakfast until 11a before they set up for lunch at 12p. Hope this helps!

We did not do the upgrade. We had received all of the same amenities the upgraded people get. Don't waste your money. They try to talk you into it. Just make sure when you book that you ask for a room closest to the beach and king size bed, etc. We did and we got all of that! We didn't do travel insurance either and we were fine.
Missy34
Hi - I just got back from this resort. I do believe cabana is for all guest. For us the upgrade was not worth it and the hotel did not try to upgrade. If you want upscale service and the snacks offered at the pool then upgrade. If you don't mind getting your own drinks then don't.
Travel insurance is a decision you need to make on your own.
Just a note- don't use Aeromexico - totally not worth it - Service was terrible and we waited 3 hours for our luggage (not just us all th e passangers).

Environmental Levy Fee
The Municipalidad of Solidaridad in the Rivera Maya is one of the most beautiful places in the Mexican Caribbean. Tourism has been instrumental in driving the economic and social development of the region. In an effort to continue to preserve, conserve and beautify the destination, the Municipality of Solidaridad has implemented a small environmental levy on visitors effective September 1, 2017. Hotels will collect 20 Mexican pesos per room per day at check in; the proceeds will be deposited in an environmental trust to fund local projects. The Municipalidad of Solidaridad thanks you for your understanding and support of this worthwhile endeavor. Thank you and enjoy your visit.
