Worst AI experience to date!!

It has taken me some time to write this review (almost a year, travel was 7/18/2018) because I'm not typically one to write about a negative experience, I just simply won't go back. However, I also understand that the only way a business can improve is if they are told where they need improvement, so here goes. My wife and I stayed at the Catalonia Royal Tulum last year and had a great stay. When we decided to take our young adult daughters to the Riveria for the first time we selected the Catalonia Moroma. First, we booked this trip 6 months in advance and had requested rooms next to each other as the girls were 20 and 17. When we arrived to check in, we were told that would not be possible and they had us separated by a few rooms. Strike One. Next, we get to our rooms and we notice right off that that our room is not as cool as our girls' room. I call and I'm told that it takes a time to cool the rooms down sometimes after having the door open? So we give it a few hours and after dinner and a swim at the pool we get back and the room is still not cooled down. I had to call 2 more times and finally after another hour, maintenance shows up. 30 minutes later we are told that they will have to move us to another room, second floor, even further from our daughters. We are promised that they will move us the next day closer and give us rooms next to each other. When we get to the second room, it's cooler but still not as cool as we would like, but after a day of travel, the room looks like it was not thoroughly cleaned (the coffee pot with coffee still in it was a dead giveaway) but, we make the best of it with the promise of a new day. The next morning after breakfast, I go to the front desk and ask about getting us moved back closer to our girls and the young lady bluntly tells us that it's not possible as they are full. I inform her that the previous night manager told us, promised us that we would be moved and she tells us that he should not have told us that as they are full. I then ask if they will please at least look at the A/C in the room they moved us to and she said they would. We left the resort and went into Playa Del Carmen for the day and when we returned, our room hadn't even been cleaned. We also noticed that it's still not that cool in the room compared to our daughters' room. I call down to the front desk and ask for help again. I was told they were behind on cleaning rooms and they would check the a/c issue......the room finally gets cleaned while we are at dinner. When we get back the a/c still isn't cold. I call again to be told that the a/c is working at its capacity and there is nothing that can be done. The next morning I make a final attempt to speak with a manager. After explaining our experience so far to another manager, I am bluntly told that there is nothing that can be done. They are full, the a/c is as cold as it will get and she doesn't even offer to provide a resolution and walks away from me and goes and helps another guest. With much restraint, I choose to not make a scene and be 'one of those guests'. So at this point, we decided to try and make the best of a bad situation. We visit Playa del Carmen again, go on a sailing excursion to Isla Mujeres, and stay at the pool as much as possible. The beach is a bust as the seaweed is so bad (smell and quantity) that you have to climb a 3 ft wall just to get to the ocean. Food is average. Restaurants are limited to Privileged guests and the buffet areas do not have a/c (surprise!!). Needless to say, it was a long 7 days and we will not ever return to this resort, and I would be very wary of any Catalonia property in the future.

No recommended.

Just going to do this in bullet points so as to actually help people make their decision on this place: -No service by pool. No food, no liquor, no water. -Bars not 24 hours as stated. 11am-midnight. -No reservations for dinners in any a la carte. Open 6-10:30 only. -Pool chairs always taken- from 7:30am on. -MOSTLY families with several young children each. -Pools all joined, no separation between adults and children section, pool is very warm. -Small swim up bar- only about 6 chairs, closes early- 11am-6pm -No staff checks on you, ever. If by pool, you need to find a bar/food to get yourself. Cannot bring food from restaurants to outside pool area. -Hotel does NOT accept pesos. Only needs pesos to pay tourism fee on $1/day. There is an atm on site that gives only pesos. -Beach - sand is nice, very soft and clean. Water line and water about 15ft in is inundated with seaweed. MORE than I’ve ever seen in my life, combined. It smells like rotten seafood. -Food is bland. Everywhere. Descriptions don’t match what you actually get. Several things were inedible. -Service in a la carte places is quick. But not friendly. -Front desk is annoyed by questions. -People for excursions are there from 9am-noon. Inconvenient. -(we booked the Tulum adventure. It was an all day thing. Beautiful. But we were told it was from 7am-4 and it was actually 7:45-6pm.) -Pool activities for children/adults are announced over a loud speaker system. You can hear them thru our entire resort, whether you are participating or not. -Most rooms had a view of just trees, very close to the balconies. We upgraded our room to premium package (not the very highest level, there was one more level.) There were no perks for this upgrade that I could tell other than being closer to the beach. -Pool/restaurants/beach quite far from the lobby and buffet. No carts to take drive you from place to place. Even on check in/out. -power went our last day for several hours. Staff just sat around waiting. No apologies. No handing out water. Had to pack and shower in dark/heat. -AC in room is equivalent to a fan. Very low on full power. I am a person usually cold and I slept on top of the covers bc it was too hot. -Resort has protected forests of palm trees and vegetation. Many instances of wildlife on the resort. Cute little coati that were friendly. I applaud the efforts to conserve nature. -This resort had a review of 4.6 and stated it was a 4/5star resort. I honest cannot see how. Probably the worst service I’ve ever experienced both on vacation and in my everyday life. We tipped everyone hoping it would improve efforts/service. It did not.

Seaweed wall. Walk way to rooms.

Relaxing, Romantic Vacation

As a young couple my boyfriend and I were looking for a quick vacation to relax and enjoy our summer before we both headed back to college. Catalonia was a great spot for that! We had some trouble with our flight getting down there which resulted in us missing one of our nights at the resort. My boyfriend called CC and asked that the missed night be moved to Thursday and they did it with ease! We look back on our trip and truly can’t think of anything wrong with it or the resort. There were conditions out of the resort’s control, like overwhelming amounts of seaweed but they always had someone out trying to clear the water as best they could. The food was overall, pretty good, we did the buffet for breakfast and lunch and sometimes dinner and we never had anything to complain about. We did the privileged package and it was 100% worth it in order to get the free reservations at the 5 restaurants on the resort. The Steakhouse and Japanese restaurants were our favorites.

Didnt stay were I booked

Although I booked and paid for this resort, they overbooked. We were offered an "upgrade", however if you have never stayed at a resort how do you know if you're truly receiving an"upgrade"? They sent us on a taxi to the Cantalonia Royal Tulum. It was ok, but had only one pool where other guests "reserved" the pool chairs with their towels. Another pool or two would e been nice. Also, if you are one with nature, you'll love the resort as it had large iguana, Mexican raccoons and other creatures that sun bathed on the pathways.
