good but not great
Overall I think it was a decent place. Room was clean but nothing spectacular. Food was good but very inconvenient to go to the front office first thing every morning to make a reservation. Buffets were typical of all inclusives or cruises. Service was good. Except the welcoming committee. This is a timeshare resort and upon arrival we were hit with their pressured sales pitch. Beach is kind of a bust. Not nice and clear like you would expect in that area. Pool is awesome if it is open. 1/2 of it was closed for renovation when we were there. Be prepared to walk! This is a sprawling resort so if you're beachside then you'll have a hike to the front desk and dining. They do have some golf carts making rounds but most people walk instead of waiting for a ride. In a nutshell, I got a great price and had a good time. I would go back if the price was right.
The resort rooms and services were excellent! They made sure we were happy at all times and treated us like queens. I was upgrade to VIP and will be traveling there again.
The only downside was the pool was under renovation. Still had fun.
Only one working elevator in 5 story building and it was tied up often by cleaning staff use, no working ice machines on any floor, and NO air conditioning. Staff full of empty promises and falsehoods. Food bland. Was the worst all inclusive resort I have ever experienced.

transportation from airport to hotel11 answers
What is an inexpensive safe way to get to and from the airport?
8 years, 97 months ago
sip
We offer round trip airport transfers provided by Olympus Tours to all of resorts in the Cancun/Riviera Maya area. For the Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda transfers are $50.00 per person round trip for shared transfers, or private transfers are available for $187.50 for 1-5 passengers. This rate is subject to change based on the resort and distance from the airport.
KateCC
I used to ride the Depalm tours, but now I take a taxi. No waiting, for others to load on the bus, check in time goes quicker because you don't have the lines. I think the price is $21. And if there are more than two couples staying at the same place you can split it.
beckybnott
Definitely get hotel transfers in advance!! We went to Cancun once without transfers, thinking we would just get a taxi and go cheap. They charge a fortune at airport and you have no option but to pay high and Riveria maya is farther so would be even more expensive!!
judyb
I recommend getting the transport option from Cheap Caribbean. Taxis are expensive and there are a lot of shady "drivers" that will swarm you when you get out of customs that are notorious for ripping of folks. Stick with Olympus Tours transfers through CC It is reliable, safe and reasonably priced.
CinATL
We booked ours through the Cancun airport website. We ended up taking Cancun Express and booking a private van online. They were on time, clean and fast with A/C.
ATLChris
We used Olympus tours, not sure if it is considered a good price but we paid $100 round trip per person. They were waiting for us, loaded our luggage, and set up the return time based on our flight schedule. Look for their orange shirts when you leave the airport-you can be sure they will be at the front of your hotel lobby at time promised.
gidge
We used the transportation service thru CheapCaribbean. The airport is crazy with scammers. Be taken care of by your hired travel dudes. Very nice. Tehy take care of you and make you feel like you are not a 1st timer....
crs246
We used USA Transfers, and got a private van to and from the airport to our resort near Playa for 80.00 both ways, or 40.00 each way.
It was by far the cheapest private transfer, and the company is well rated on tripadvisor.
ZRX1200
Olympus Tour transportation was included in my Cheap Caribbean vacation. They are exceptional--just look for the orange shirts.
Midnightrider
That's all included in the vacation package.
Mastero
We used the service provided by Olympus Tours. I highly recommend using them. The staff is very helpful and professional. I believe it was $60 US round trip per person when we booked our trip. I would also recommend using Olympus for all other tour arrangements.

Are the restaurants in The BlueBay Grand Esmeralda Resort air conditioned???11 answers
8 years, 97 months ago
Wink58
BlueBay Grand Esmeralda had both open air and air conditioned restaurants.
KateCC
No every thing is open air.
TIKIHUT
Several of the restaurants are air conditioned ( the main dinner restaurants near the lobby), although the beachside restaurants and several other s are not. The main bar (the Sports Bar) is open air and not air conditioned.
CinATL
Yes, but they can still get very warm. The French, Mexican and Italian restaurants are well air conditioned. The Steakhouse and Seafood are but with the high ceilings and the open entranceway it gets warm inside.
ATLChris
The Steak and The Seafood are not. They sit on the beach and most of the time the breeze is more than enough to keep things comfortable. The other locations are air conditioned.
MrRogers
Yes. The steak house was open to the ocean but did not bother us for the heat. Its all good.
crs246
Three of them have A/C.
KMWM
Yes, main resturant is ( you use it for brekfeast, lunch and dinner). 2 smaller restaurants (You can use those for breakfast nd lunch)are not, but there is a nice breeze from the ocean and fans are working. Steakhouse and seafood is not airconditioned, Mexican and French is.We did not try any other ones. I believe Oriental is outside as well, so no A/C.
silvia2308
The italian and the french restaurants are. The Asian, steak, and seafood are not.
awheeler
The main buffet and the mexican, french and italian are

If you are looking to stay at this resort, since they do not allow 5 people in the room, you would need to book 2 rooms, with one adult in each room. There are some resorts in the Riviera Maya that will allow 5 people in a room. Please use the gold "Create Your Own Vacation" box on our web site to find hotels which will best meet your needs. Please make sure to enter all guests ages to receive the most accurate information.
KristinCC
you would need two rooms or a suite
rebmik
Some resorts have what they call a family room, which will allow up to five people, 2 adults and three children under 12
julie57
This is an adult only resort..or was anyway.
Auntlulu
Any child over the age of 12 is considered an adult otherwise they can stay with you in your room
Irishshadow
You can sleep 2 in one bed or ask the hotel for assistance.
Mastero
We asked for and received a rollaway bed at no charge.

What are the water and land sports that are included ?9 answers
7 years, 96 months ago
Paco
Included in the all-inclusive package at this resort are: access to all pools, access to the state-of-the-art gym, tennis courts, volleyball courts, ping pong and billiards table, and kayaking. Other sports, such as jet skiing, water skiing, etc, are available nearby for an additional cost.
KristinCC
There are kayaks you can use.
TIKIHUT
All inclusive at the hotel but if you want let us say jet skies you have to pay extra.
Irishshadow
None that we were aware of. Beach a little rocky not too far from shore.
gidge
No water items included except water volleyball in the pool. Lots of parasailing going on $$$.. They had some land vlleyball and daily events to participate in. Nothing I choose to do but they tried to recruit me.
crs246
Canoeing, volleyball, botchieball, not sure what else
Jeddai
They have kayaks and a catamaran that are free of charge to use. They have extensive list of poolside activities both directed and undirected (water aerobics, salsa dance lessons, golf contests, water polo, volleyball tournaments, etc.) also free.
PerkinsFamily
On the website, it says that kayaks and things like that are included- we didn't see any of that while we were there. Not sure if this was due to the "off season" but there was nothing that we could use for free in the water.
Guppyloves
Multiple, the few I observed were water polo, water aerobics and volleyball

how many miles are you from the airport , how long does it take.11 answers
7 years, 96 months ago
jean[e
It about a 30min bus / van ride from the airport.
KTownK
BlueBay Grand Esmeralda is located 22 miles away from Cancun International Airport (CUN). Approximate driving time to the is 45 minutes.
KellyCC
It took about 40 minutes to get from airport to hotel. We went with Olympus tours to take us back and forth from airport to resort. Time before we didn't purchase roundtrip transfers and airport taxis and transportation was very expensive so definitely get the transfers ahead of time!!
judyb
It takes about 30-45 min
amriep
takes 30 minutes if you drive straight there. however; if you use the Olympus bus, then you have to drop other ppl off at their resorts and this takes time. it took us about 1 hour to 1 15 mins to get there from airport.
alisha
You are about 25 miles away. With private car service you would be there in 25min. But if you use a transfer service it could take up to an hour and a half. The tranfers stop at other resorts, the resorts along the riviera maya can take 10-15mins to access from the main road.
rebmik
Don't know the exact mileage, but the ride took about half an hour. The resort is south of the airport, about 10 minutes from Playa del Carmen.
CinATL
????About 35 minute travel time from Cancun airport.
gidge
Well that all depends on Olympus Tours. If you purchase round trip airport transfers this is one of the companies CheapCaribbean uses. The resort is about 42 minutes from the airport. Depending on the level of organization at the airport on that particular day..it could take you as little as 10 minutes to be in a van and on your way or like last year when I was there they took almost 90 minutes to sort things out and get folks on their way. Remember while in Mexico nothing happens quickly. That is part of the charm in going there to relax.
MrRogers
20 minutes or so.
crs246
We opted not to book a ride from cheapcaribbean (drive to the resort) and took a taxi from the airport. It was priced better: for 4 of us $90.00 one way and $50.00 other way. (Througha websire it would $200.00 all togeter). Also it is faster, it is only 4 of you in the car so the driver does not stop at every resort and goes directly to yours. It takes 30-40 min from Cancun airport.

How much should I plan on tipping my pool/beach side servers at Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda for drinks?11 answers
7 years, 96 months ago
smack
Most people did not tip. But $1US per tray full of drinks seemed to happen once in a while.
KTownK
Just bring American dollars with you. They love them. We gave them a dollar everytime they came back and they kept on coming, pretty regularly.
Tiggerburg
Taxes and gratuities are included in the All-Inclusive Plan and will not be expected! However if you feel the need, having a few $1 bills handy would be good.
KellyCC
Gratuities are included with your all-inclusive package, so it is not necessary to tip, but it definitely doesn't hurt to give the servers a couple dollars when they bring you drinks poolside and on the beach. A dollar per drink would be totally acceptable.
JenCC
I generally tipped a dollar per round of drinks delivered, and they seemed happy with that. I did wish that I had brought more singles with me --- it was a bit embarrassing having to get change from the servers before I could tips them, but $20 for a tip was out of the question!
CinATL
It really depends on how much you drink. If you partake a lot, $10 every day or so will be very appreciated.
Auntlulu
Tipping is optional and we did not see a lot of it! We chose to tip because it appeared everyone was very hard working. A friend suggested we bring a lot of singles and 5 dollar bills and it was a great suggestion as the bartenders appreciated recieving a buck now and then. We chose to tip a couple dollars at lunch and 5 for dinner. Most people were not tipping. We enjoyed our meals and the attentiveness of the servers so it only seemed right to tip.
gidge
Nothing, or 1-2 bucks. You don't need to. They don't expect it. If you want better attention, pay more. If your relaxing, don't worry.
crs246
We gave them $5 to $10 a day and they took really good care of us.
KMWM
People do not tip much at all. Mostly nothing. We did give like $2.00 tips once in while, in the restaurants that you make a reservations for we gave $5.00 tips.
silvia2308
We planned on spending a full day at the pool and the server was quite nice. I gave her $1 on the first round of drinks and then the rain storm came in so all was done at the pool. You can also go to the open bars and order your own drinks. Try making a rum and coke float buy adding some of the free ice cream ;)

How many restaurants are there within the resort?11 answers
would there be enough variety that we wouldn't have to leave the resort to find other types of food?
7 years, 96 months ago
DD
There are speciality restaurants on the resort - Steakhouse, Seafood, French, Italian, Mexican. Plus a dinner buffet with different food every night. 2 lunch and breakfast buffets everyday too. No need to leave the resort.
Gdub222
Yes, there is enough of a variety of food. Although it is fun to enjoy Island Restaurants if only for a couple of nights.. Get out and see the sights of the night life.
beckybnott
This resort has 9 bars and lounges plus 4 restaurants offering a variety of foods to choose from. Resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean are made to be self-sufficient so there should be no need for you to leave to find food.
JenCC
They have a mexican, seafood, french, italian, oriental, steak and buffet restaurants. You will need to make reservations at all these restaurants except the buffet one. They are spread out through out the resort and will need to do some walking or wait for extended golf carts to take you to some of these restaurants. We really liked all the food here.
judyb
Yes, there is lots of variety!
amriep
There is a hugh variety. Two buffets with everything. And 5 restaurant choices. Steakhouse, seafood, mexican, italian, asian
rebmik
We were very satisfied with the food choices. The buffets were good and we did try all available options: seafood restaurant, oriental night, steak house, french, mexican and italian. All were good, just be sure you book your reservations early in the am.
gidge
7 days and we doubled up in one resuarant twice. So 6......
crs246
Yes, for sure. They have a great buffet for breakfast and lunch everyday with tons of food on it, and then also a dinner buffet that is amazing. Then each night they have a different themed dinner with amazing food and outdoor seating. It is great. There is tons of variety and I guarantee you will find lots of things to enjoy!
SDALE
There are six. I don't think that you would need to leave the resort for food.
KMWM
There is a buffet running all three meals with a large variety. Additionally, IF you get your reservations in there is Italian, Seafood, Steak, Mexican, Oriental and French. These are great!

Mini Bar?11 answers
I'm confused about this mini bar thing. Most hotels charge for this service, but it's unclear if this is included. Caribbean Jim's Corner makes me think it might be? Anyone know for sure?
7 years, 95 months ago
traveltime
Everything in the mini bar was included to the best of our knowledge. We drank the sodas, water and beers and were never charged anything. They refilled them daily.
Crackof
Included! They restock with soda, water and 4 beers each day :-)
amriep
My friend... you will love the mini bar. it is included in the all inclusive deal. The fridge is well stocked with XX beer, variety of soda's, water etc. There is also liquor in the room of plenty. I thought access might be an issue... not at all!
Tiffdanny
I just returned from San Souci last Thursday. The minibar is included and you have a form to fill out every day to request particular items in the fridge.
livi360
The Riu Yucatan does not charge extra for this. When a bottle emptys, they replace it. No charge!
rogerfrommass
The mini bar is totally free.......it was awesome and it is also filled each and every day. We never ran out, my husband was in heaven. It's really shocking that it's free, but you really don't spend too much time in your room, there are too many bars and other things to do. All drinks are free at bars, restaurants and etc. at this hotel. Awesome place, you won't be dissappointed.
CindyIndy
Your minibar is included. You will have beer, soda and water
rebmik
The mini bar IS included -- it is part of your "all inclusive" charge... However, the selection in the minibar is limited to beer, Coke, Diet Coke, Mineral Water. I drink wine rather than beer, so just brought back extra glasses from the bar and kept them in the fridge... I noticed other folks brought big thermos cups to the bar and the bartenders had no issues with filling them with whatever. I will be better prepared for next time.
CinATL
There was no additonal charge. Our maid kept our stocked with bottled water, pop, and beer.
gidge
The Mini Bar's are complementary. They come by every day to restock.
Unfortunately sometimes at 7:30am.
MrRogers
Included, but what you get is 6 cans of pop, water and 4 beers. They refill it only once per day. No Liquor.....

Can anyone tell me about the Emerald "swim up" package?11 answers
Thinking of booking the "Emerald" swim up deluxe package. I'm not sure if it's worth it and don't know what "swim up" actually means as far as the room goes. Can anyone tell me? thanks
7 years, 95 months ago
happygirl
I just came home from this hotel. It is lovely overall, service is great, hotel itself not so great. The rooms have alot to be desired. The food is good, but I suggest only eating dinner in the restaurants, the buffet is not very good.
I have been there 4 times and have never heard of a swim up package. There is a fabulous swim up bar, but not sure why you would need a special package since this is an all inclusive resort.
If you want a pleasant vacation, relaxing and no fuss this is the place to go.
Auntlulu
No i can not
Irishshadow
I was just there, RivMaya. It did not swim up. It was just a mini pool connecting some rooms. Very lame. No swim up pools are there. No swim up bar.
crs246
There is a little pool in front of some of the rooms. Think lap pool size. I personally wouldn't recommend it . We never saw anyone in those pools at any point of the day.
KMWM
The benefit of a swim up room is that you are closer to the main pool and to the beach. Its pretty much like you have your own lap pool but you do share it with other guests that are next to you on the same floor. i think that packapge is mainly good for a group that way you all can have that pool to yourselves
awheeler
I did not book a swim up. However the swim up room has a pool that connects to your patio and the patio of every other swim up room at that building (not very private)
Kimmel637
We just got back from this resort and thought about doing the swim up idea... For the money I didn't think it was worth it. Its a small pool connected to 5 other rooms at the resort. Its maybe 4 foot deep and maybe 6 or 7 feet across. We spent most of our time at the pool the other thing that sucks too is all the water including the swim up room pool is closed by 7 when they treat it with chemicals at night. Save yourself the money...
Lambing0612
Just got back 3 days ago with the swim up suite and it's not a view of the ocean(none of them are) but they are really close to the beach and pool... You get alcohol bottles in your room but it's free anywhere on the resort and it's a pretty big suite with 2 bathrooms and plenty of towels for the beach and the side we were on didn't have any sun but for a couple hours and was blocked by the balconies of the other rooms, so we just went to the pool most of the time... If we did want to swim it was late and the water was warm but it was a lil windy so it made it a little cold.. I would hav liked a room on the top floor to see the sunset and beach.... In the swim up, you share a patio with 2-3 suites and it's a maybe 4 ft deep pool that goes about 7 foot away from the room and wraps the building you are in... Its worth it depending on how much disposable income you have and how much extra it costs...
Jeddai
We thought about doing the same thing. I'm glad we didn't do that after seeing the swim up rooms. Basically there's a small pool infront of about 5 rooms... and you basically just walk out to that shared pool. When we first read it, I was thinking it meant to swim out to the big pool at the resort, but it doesn't. I wish I had a good picture of it to post for you. Stick to ocean front - can't be beat!
psusnoflk
It seems the resort is trying to sell the swim up rooms as time share option. They look nice but I personally wouldn't like one as there really isn't any privacy. The pools are shared and overlook the pathways.
wanderingwoman
They have "private" pools, which are very small and "shared" with a few other rooms. I didn't get one of these rooms but I heard the water was hot, and I never once saw anybody swimming in the swim-up pools. I'd say save your money and upgrade to the VIP package which gives you a more comprehensive mini-bar in the room and some other benefits.
oneluckygirl
It's not worth the $$$. The swim up package includes having water / pool at your room, however, they all face the walkways and so, you're not really in any situation with privacy.
Waldo42
The swim up rooms are first floor rooms with a moot instead of a patio. Wife and I just returned and will up-grade to Emerald next time to have our own swimming pool instead of a patio! You will enjoy and it is great if you have kids that like to swim as you can control them.

best time to travel to Cancun?11 answers
what is the best time to travel to the Caribbean/ Cancun/Playa Del Carmen? Specifically, with hurricane season.
7 years, 94 months ago
Andi
Right now is the best time to travel! We just came back last week. It was perfectly 90 degrees every day. We didn't see any rain. Nice breeze from the ocean! We also heard a staff member say that "this is winter here, summer gets hot!" 90 was hot enough for us. Have a great time if you go!
Bump
We just traveled May 3rd through May 10th and we were told by many there that is was the best week to travel as the place was not crowded. The weather was 90-94 and sunny every day except for 10 minutes in the morning our first day!
ihml1
June through September begins the rainy season in Cancun. In addition the hurricane track is active at that time. Any other time will normally bring you 80 to 85 degree temps and usually there is a fair breeze to go along with that..that will keep things quite pleasant.
MrRogers
I would say May.
KMWM
June - before hurricane season really gets started but it is the down season and there are not alot of crowds. It was perfect.
karolnnalabama
Not too sure since hurricane season runs most of the summer and into the fall! We went in mid June and it either rained or was overcast the entire time we were there except for one day. We still enjoyed ourselves but a tan would have been nice!
FloridaGirl22
We stayed 9/9/2011 through 9/15/2011 and the weather was humid to put it mildly. It rained several times while we were there. The downpours did not hamper our stay in any way though. It was fun to watch the clouds roll in and then experience the thunder and lightning shows.
wanderingwoman
I don't know that it was the best time, but the end of September begins "off-season." We didn't wait anywhere, we had plenty of space in the pool, they hadn't started cutting back on their staff and everyone seemed friendly. The weather was mid 90's, with a chance of rain every day. It was a tropical rain, where 20 min. max and it was done for the day.
hostetle
Early January is chilly sometimes....but by the end of the month and February...it gets HOT! January and February are the end of Winter, and have lass rain....but it is still in the 80's during the day with the least humidity. After that....Hot and Humid and rain!
Lipstick1974
Went went in mid September and it was beautiful
NEWTRAVELERS
The first time we went was mid May and it was FANTASTIC!! We recently went, Oct. 7, which is considered OFF season so it truly wasn't as nice.

how's the beach11 answers
is the water crystal clear, and is it rough?
7 years, 93 months ago
ms raw
The beach isn't very appealing at all. The water is brown and rough.
Vacationgal
The left side of the beach is nice and clear for swimming. The right side of the beach does not appear as clear since that is where they launch the jetskis and boats.
MariaCC
The water is not as clear as you may expect from picture of the area. we stayed 9 day and 6 of them the water was very clear the others it was a bit murky with seaweed. It is not rough at all. It is also very shallow only up to may waiste about 50ft from shore. Playa Del Carmens beach is very clear, very blue and deeper (also rougher) and you can get there by taxi or the $5 shuttle the hotel offers.
Kimmel637
water is grayish brown.... not the BEAUTIFUL water you would expect.... I think it's in more of a bay area.. But there are some beautiful spots, not too far from the hotel. Walking distance!
wilkinsongirls
The beach... It wasn't bad and yes the water was clear. However it was very shallow and from place to place there were rocks and mossy stuff.
Lambing0612
The water, although very warm, was not crystal clear. This was never a problem, however, as the pools were amazing!
Audgy
The water is not clear at all! It is brown and murky.
rayna
The beach was really bad. Do not stay here if you want a nice beach and swimming area.
There was alot of seaweed on the beach (they clean it up regularly), but it was also in the water, with only a few clear places to swim.
ZRX1200
The water was very calm in front of the hotel, but it is not the beautiful clear Caribbean water you might expect. There had been storms while were were there so I'm sure it was a bit more churned up then usual - We did see some men raking up seaweed one day, but people were out there swimming. There are lifeguards on duty.
Karengirl
It is absolutely lovely. There are rough areas (surf is high and rocky) but most is swim-able and there are gorgeous inlet areas. You will not be disappointed. It looks like a postcard.
Mayanconnie
absolutely stunning! It is rocky at the Tulum resort, but perfect at Akumal. It is not rough and it is crystal clear and warm.

You can, but there is a nice shop right across the street that has a huge cigar section. Cubans and Jamaicans.
PRJukebox
Yes they have them in the gift shop. Vendors also come on sat. night and one sold cigars. You can also take the shuttle to Playa Del Carmen for $5 and there are many options along 5th ave.

Are the rooms air conditioned?11 answers
Im hearing some buildings do not have a/c.
7 years, 93 months ago
dl
They do have A/C and if you ask nicely, they will bring you a can of RAID for the mosquitos let in by the staff leaving the door open while they clean......Or the gap under the door large enough for a LIZARD to get in!
BigDaddy76016
No. Your room key activates the fan, air conditioner, lights and fridge. Once you leave the room, everything shuts down so you enter a boiling hot room, and can't even get a cold beverage out of the fridge.
MaggieT
Our room did have a/c, and it was definitely necessary, even thought it was rainy.
greattan
Yes, all room categories are equipped with air conditioning.
MariaCC
Yes, ours was.
hellmanns
Our room had great AC, but we had an upgraded room. I heard that you have to leave a room key in the other rooms in order to have the AC on which isn't too big of a problem if you just ask for a second key.
FloridaGirl22
Most of the resort is un airconditioned. The guest rooms are, and the Mexican, Italian and French dining areas are.
The main lobby, and the other three dining areas are not. The sports bar and entertainment area was not.
It was really hot and humid during our stay, so we were hot and sweaty much of the time
ZRX1200
Yes, the rooms are air conditioned. However, it does not run when you are out of the room, as all of the electricity in your room is "unlocked" by your room key. Once you turn on the power in the room, you can turn on/adjust your A/C as needed.
ZMarie
Our rooms were air conditioned. I did not hear of anyone complaining about a lack of air conditioning which leads me to believe, all the rooms have air conditioning.
TravelingGranny
We were in building 7 and the airconditioning was great. Also had a ceiling fan.
Midnightrider
Our room was freezing! AC works perfect.

None available. 3 computers in the common area but you have to pay for it.

Does this resort offer parking free of chanrge?7 answers
I'm considering renting a car instead of using shuttles because I have 3 people. Is parking included in the resort stay? and is parking fairly easy in the area?(Playa de carmen, and chichen itza park, etc?)
Thanks!
7 years, 92 months ago
ARIELJS
Yes parking is free
Mastero
I don't think it would be worth the cost of renting a car. I just went with a group of 8 people, and we had no trouble getting taxis and shuttles for our group. You'll probably spend less on transportation if you DON'T rent a car.
I booked round-trip airport transfer transportation through Cheap Caribbean, and it was pretty reasonable.
oneluckygirl
Chichen Itza has several parking areas. Renting a shuttle is a good idea, but make sure that you have the correct maps and someone who can speak Spanish. Playa does NOT have good parking available, I'd cab it or bus/shuttle from the resort to 5th Ave.
Waldo42
Parking at the resort and Playa del Carmen is definitely free. My advice is to pay for insurance through the car rental company before you go because in Mexico they will force you to get insurance (even though your credit card company covers it) and it ends up being much more expensive.
JoyfulSandy
I do not recommend renting a car. Not safe...drivers in Mexico see tourists as a target. The rental companies usually want money upfront, and it is also easy to get into accidents there caused by others. Playa is a 10 minute($20) cab fare, which is easily split between 3 people. There are many buses and vans leaving daily to excursions such as Xplor, Xcaret, Telum, etc.....and they also include free lunches and beverages. We were also considering renting a car...but were quickly talked out of it after hearing several horror stories. No need....seems like too much of a headache. Didn't see parking at the resort.
Lipstick1974
NO reason to drive! Even though it's a straight shot down highway to everything its not necessary. Olympus Tours is great for airport transports. They have very nice, large vans and it's only about $40 a head. There is a tour rep at the resort as well and we chose them for our excursions as well. Great!
Everheart
Parking was free when I stayed. Parking is easy at the places you want to visit.

Why is the water brown in front of the resort?11 answers
Looked at photos that previous vacationers have posted on TripAdvisor and the water is brown/murky... is it this way all the time?
7 years, 92 months ago
Sugarfoots
NOOOOOOO! The grounds are immaculate and are constantly being groomed. They even have a bulldozer thing that cleans up seaweed very early in the morning. I just returned from Barcelo Mayan Colonial yesterday and would go back again and again! Enjoy!
Mayanconnie
I don't know what picture you were looking at but the water was cristal clear.
Mastero
We just spent 8 days there and the water was as clear and bright blue as you could get. The water visability is exceptional. There is no water in front of the resorts so I have no idea what the photos you are referring to could be off. The only water is either fountains or the beach and both are crystal clear.
LoveTraveling
Yes. The beach sucks.
TooltimeKE
YES! The water is disgusting, dirty, full of seaweed and unswimmable all the time! That was our biggest disappointment. If you visit Playa del Carmen, the beach is the complete opposite.
Kimmarie
We do not have any reports on file concerning the water being brown and/or murky.
MariaCC
Not sure. Was that way when we were there. But its not a reef and we walked into the water for about a min ute. The beach under was real goopy and sticky. I lost a shoe in it
Eliza
This is a good question. I honestly think it's because of where the waves are coming from and the wind direction. When we first arrived the water was brown with seaweed, and there was a ton of it on the shore. But then, after only a day or two, the seaweed and brown water was completely GONE. The beach was cleared of seaweed and the water was a clear blue and it remained that way for the rest of our trip.
SheriandJon
it is the sea weed but they are pretty good about cleaning it up.
shal
There is a lot of sea grass in the warm shallow water. It is the nature of the location and nothing to worry about.
wanderingwoman
Kind of depends on the tides. That whole stretch of beach is man-made, and there is still some vegetation and seaweed growing. Some days the water was pretty clear, other days it was a bit yucky. Those days we stuck by the pools, which are enormous, comfortable, clean and fun!
oneluckygirl
We were hear last week, and the water was clean! I have beautiful photo's of the entrance as well as the pool, and they look like postcards! :-)

How far from Playa Del Carmen?11 answers
Are you stuck at the resort or is it easy to get out and about when you want?
7 years, 91 months ago
TIM
There is so much to do at the resort, that you won't find time to leave. If you do however, Playa Del Carmen is approximately 30 minutes by taxi.
LoveTraveling
Hi Tim,
No, you are definitely not stuck at the resort! With Playa del Carmen only 6 miles away you have many options to choose from when planning your vacation. There are plenty of cabs available to offer transportation into town and a large selection of excursions available as well. Feel free to cal one of our experienced Destination Specialists should you need any additional information.
ccsusan1
Play del Carmen is not that far away. The resort does offer paid transportation to Play del Carmen. I would definitely recommend staying in Playa del Carmen rather than Riviera Maya.
Since we were quite disappointed with BlueBay, my son and I took daily excursions off the resort. I would definitely recommend Rio Secreto and Chichen Itza. You can book them through XCaret at the resort.
Kimmarie
About 45 min. by car
Eliza
VERY easy to get to Playa del Carmen. It's about a 15 minute ride via the resort shuttle (about $5 each way). Or you can take a taxi, but we had no problem with the shuttle.
NewYorkCourtney
You can definitely get out and about. I think it was only a 15-20 minute ride to Playa. Getting there was super easy - the resort offers shuttles. You pay per person, per trip. I can't remember the exact cost but it wasn't much. You just check with the front desk to reserve your spot on the shuttle and to find out what times they leave and come back.
SheriandJon
Playa Del Carmen is a few miles south. The resort runs a shuttle for $5 US, per person, each way. We however took a more adventurous trip. You can catch a taxi across the highway from the resort for $2 US a person. We had planned to take the resort shuttle back but were unable to find the pick-up location so we took the local bus. The bus is really a crowded van. It was fun and was about $3.50 US a person.
wanderingwoman
About 50 min. from Cancun and about 25 min. from Playa Del Carmen. There are a couple of travel companies located in the bar (actually, behind the main bar). They take you shopping, to clubs or other tourist attractions, for a price. This is the case of most of the resorts out from Cancun.
hostetle
It's about a 15-20 minute drive to downtown PDC. I think a taxi was $20-$30 each way.
The resort is very large and has a lot of amenities, including a spa, numerous gift shops and lots of dining options, though, so you don't HAVE to leave the resort if you don't want.
oneluckygirl
You are not stuck, they have excursions that take you all over. There are taxis that will take you places, cancun is only 35 minutes away and they have a club called Coco Bongo that you pay a fee and they cover the transportation, all you drink etc. plue 5th ave is 5 minutes away and they are tons of shops and restaurants. The hotel itself is not boring but you do have the option to leave if you want to.
JFras
There is a shuttle that takes you to Playa del Carmen for $5 each way per person. There are 4 time options to go and 4 time options for pick up. It is only a 15-20 minute ride.

Is the beach suitable for snorkeling, or would a booked snorkel adventure be advisable?11 answers
Question is in reference to BlueBay Grand Esmerelda.
7 years, 91 months ago
shoop-shoop
The beach in Riviera Maya, especially at the BlueBay Grand Esmeralda, is not suitable for anything. You cannot swim or snorkel. The beach and water are dirty and full of seaweed. You would need to book a snorkel adventure ~ possibly in Playa del Carmen. The water there is absolutely beautiful, clear and swimmable.
Kimmarie
you can snorkel and it's not bad thats about all the beach is good for. the area has a lot of grass on the bottom
hillde
We just got back from there a week ago. The beach is not a reef and was too cloudy to do snorkeling. I would schedule an excursion.
Eliza
I would book a snorkel adventure since the beach is not as clear as other areas in the Riviera Maya. My boyfriend and I brought our snorkels and didn't see anything at the beach at the resort.
NewYorkCourtney
There is a lagoon 5 minutes to the North of the resort, but I would book an excursion at another location. We went to a place 10 minutes from bbge it started with an M but can't remember the name-sorry. It was clear water and beautiful fish/coral.
NikNik
I guess you could snorkel there, but I'm thinking probably not. The beach is rather shallow, and you'd probably want to go out further to the reef. My recommendation would be to book a snorkeling adventure but definitely shop around and compare prices.
Hope this helps!
SheriandJon
once you cross the sea weed, the water is crystal clear. fish swim near your feet. so snorkeling would be good
shal
You can do either. We saw many people snorkeling right from the beach. We saw many fish just while swimming, so I imagine the snorkeling to be great there.
psusnoflk
You would have to book a snorkle adventure...My husband and I tried by bringing our own snorkel equipment and you can't do it there or around the beach...its not protected or calm waters
soder
You can snorkel at the resort. However the ocean is very shallow there and a bit murky. You would be better off in booking a side trip to an area known for snorkeling. I would advise you to think of going to Cozumel to snorkel.
wanderingwoman
This resort is not known for its beach. The first 10 feet is filled with yucky, murky water. It's gets MUCH better after that. But I would still recommend booking a separate snorkeling trip.

It is your prerogative as to how much you are looking to spend. According to the resort's website, https://www.bluebayresorts.com/en/hotel-bluebay-grand-esmeralda.html, it is advised that the Jacuzzi Suites have a living room with a sofa-bed, dining room, two TV's and the private Jacuzzi is located on the terrace.

can you wear nice jeans and shirt in the restaurants or does it have to be pants for guys?11 answers

For restaurants with a dress code, most will not accept jeans on men or women and long pants must be khakis or similar. You would be best to check with the resort directly for the most accurate information on their dress code.
KristinCC
Yes! Anything other than beach wear. Jeans or nice shorts are more than nice enough especially in the buffet!
Everheart
you can dress casual to the restaurants with jeans or short with a t-shirt, is not at all how they make it seem on the site.
Jessicanelsi
In the reservation restaurant, pants are required. In the non-reservation, you can wear basically whatever you'd like.
MandaPants
Jeans and closed toe shoes were fine. Sleeved shirts.
Lesdsmith
In the ala carte' restaurants, nice shorts and casual shirts were more than fine. The buffets, as long as you had shoes on, you were good to go.
atomicbeddy
Yes, jeans are allowed. They really only care that men aren't wearing shorts or open toed shoes.
Guppyloves

Men can wear jeans and sneakers in the nicer restaurant; no shorts or sandals. Women do not have a dress code.

The dinner tickets say long pants (jeans ok) and covered shoes. However this was not strictly enforced. My husband wore sandals every night and I did see some people in shorts. I would pack at least 1 pair of pants/shoes just in case.

Partial ocean view:
The buildings are not perfect aligned parallel to the beach.
Our room was partial ocean view. We were second floor and great view overlooking the pools plus the ocean behind them. So I guess, because you look at the pools first and then the ocean, that makes it partial ocean view.
FamilyfromMichigan
You get tickets to the Spa to do some water thing, I never went, and free wifi, but not sure if everyone gets that. The cost is cheap, but wasn't worth it to get the VIP add. Also my partial ocean view had 0 ocean.
AlexC
VIP amenities are for the members who have bought into the property. They have swimming pools that are attached to their patio. VIP get best rooms views. Pretty and interesting concept but we didn't see many using due to the mosquitos at this resort.

I don't think he will be bored. There are posted activities each day. There was a beach volleyball game everyday. There are an assortment of watersports available some included, some cost extra. Of course, you can always go on an excursion for extra$. He can try any of the fancy bar drinks just asked for them with no alcohol. He would probably meet others to hang out with and if all else fails the T.V. is fine too.

I did not see a teen club, but there were some activities at night but more for the younger crowd. We saw Barney one night, then a Michael Jackson impersonator..every night is different and pleases different age groups. lots of buffets and sometimes live music at night!

They have a kids club from 2-12 but there is plenty of daily activities that are sure to keep a 17yr old busy.

No, there are activities to do throughout the day around the beach, such as volleyball. he can also do activities such as jet skiing or snorkeling if he is into that. There is no club for teens though, and it is very couple oriented

It is not walkable, have to have a shuttle bus take you there, the ocean is much prettier there.
Indiana25
It is about a 25 minute drive to 5th ave so it is not walkable. To experience Mexico outside of resorts there are many excursions available to purchase either through CheapCaribbean.com or at the tour desks at the resort.
LizCC
In order to make it to 5th Avenue and downtown Playa del Carmen, you will need to take a Taxi or Shuttle. A taxi will cost you between 200-300 pesos.
LetsRunAway
It is a 10 to 15 minute ride by shuttle van. Unable to walk. In a completely different area than Bluebay.
Mercury
Not walkable. Take a taxi. The resort also offers a shuttle. I think it leaves at 2 hour intervals. But I would recommend a taxi. They're very easy to get.
It is safe there as the policia patrol it to make certain there are no incidents.
Some of the shop owners are a little over zealous basically begging you to come into their stores.
Don't fall for them pretending to work at your resort. They'll say "Oh remember me, I was your waiter last night" 99% of the time That's not true. A sales tactic I guess.

It’s pretty safe we just came back, BlueBay Grand Esmeralda it’s a long ways from the Airport about an hour drive we rented a car and had no problems.

There is a group of hotels in the front near the water. Then there is a group quite a ways behind that. How am I guaranteed a room in the group of hotels near the beach?

We suggest contacting one of our Beach Experts at 1.800.915.2322 for details regarding your inquiry. Our agents can ensure what you are paying for is exactly what you want and nothing less!

I would just call and request it before my trip. Then they would have you down there.

I saw on the website for this hotel that you are only allowed a certain number of reservations per number of nights that you are staying at the hotel. I can no longer find this information and is it important to make reservations before hand or is it possible to make all reservations upon arrival?
3 years, 48 months ago
Kara
Unfortunately, BlueBay does not allow guests to make reservations prior to arrival. Once you are checked in, you will be able to make reservations for dinner.
KristenCC
Not that we encountered. We were there 7 nights, and went to 5 specialty restaurants. We could have done the 6th restaurant, but just didn't want to be on a schedule that day. You have to make reservations the day before, no earlier.
JoeFr
we stayed 6 days and ate at a restaurant every night, there was no limit.

No, I don't think to Talum, there is one to Playa Del Carmen. Of course, you can book a day trip to Talum from the hotel.

What is the process for making dinner reservations?6 answers
Can you eat at different locations each night? Any limit to reservations?
3 years, 48 months ago
Lori
Dinner reservations can be made after arriving to hotel. This is usually done with Guest Services. Each resort has different policies on how they require reservations to be made/limits to amount of reservations, but most of the time they are recommended to be done at least a day in advance.
CCGreg
We had no issues with reservations and there were 8 adults and 1 baby. We were not restricted on reservations. The meals can get long with many courses. We generally made our reservations the morning of or a day ahead...was very easy.
lam63
We ate at a different restaurant each night (six specialty restaurants). We were there 7 nights.
You have to book the day before--no earlier.
JoeFr
You must make reservations one day ahead. Morning is best for selection of restaurant and time. Each building has its own concierge, and you must make it in person, so they can give you a ticket. Reservations are saved for 15 minutes. Concierge usually opens at 9:00 AM, so if one in your party is up that early, throw on a pair of shorts, or a bathrobe, and walk out to the desk, at the building entrance.
See Mapchick for good info on Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen.
Moddy
You have to make dinner reservations for all the restaurants except the buffets. Reservations can only be made that day, I would recommend getting up early to make those reservations daily.
Kdc12
You can eat at different locations but you have to make reservations the day before or early in the morning. No limit on reservations.

is the hotel located on beach front??5 answers
According to a review there is NO BEACH???
3 years, 47 months ago
BOSTON MA
Yes, this resort has directly on the beach. It is not a huge beach, but is beachfront.
KristenCC
yes, there is a beach! buildings 5 and 4 are directly on the beach and near the pool. There is alot of seaweed, but they clean is daily. But this is a common theme in this area, not just this hotel. There where days we did not or could not enter the water , but than the next day it could be clear and we swam! We walked to the lagoon about 10 minutes, left of the hotel beach. Very pretty spot. Im a beach person and thought I would be disappointed with all the reviews I read about the beach and seaweed. I had a great time regardless. the pools are amazing.
lisafromboson
Yes, but the water is brown, not the gorgeous sea blue as in other places
TravelerofChoice
absolutely! the beach is literally next to the main pool towards the back of the resort. and on the beach is where you can book jet skis, parasailing, etc.....
mrsstitt
It is beachfront. But the beach is a small place and the water is so murky that you can’t see your feet just stepping in. Maybe due to location of the hotel, the water was very dark brown most of the time.

what kind of night entertainment do they have ?dancing ?
3 years, 47 months ago
USA
There are only 2 bars at this resort so it isn't known for a big night life. They do have 1 24 hour bar but not much dancing. You may want to search for another resort if you would like a lot of Bars and Clubs.
Shane99
entertainment is usally some sort of show nightly at 9:30 pm.
we saw Grease, Michael Jackson and a magic show. It wasnt anything spectacular.
There is a beach party ,but I never made it to one. The beach party starts around 10 or 11 pm. Other than that there is no music or parties.
lisafromboson
the black and white bar offers pool tables, drinks, and a live dj for dancing.
mrsstitt
There wasn’t night entertainment for adults. They had a bar that was connected to a stage room where they performed shows (Aladdin one night). So the sound at the bar was coming from the stage. Never got a night life going. People were falling asleep in the bar area having to watch Aladdin or children play games on the stage.
LoveCozumel28
No, just one show at night, mediocre at best.

The beach is white and sandy and the water is clear.
SalCC
During my stay, May 23 - 28, the water had a lot of seaweed and some rough waves that made the water by the shore murky. If you went further out, it was nice and blue. Also would recommend shoes by the shore, cause the tide swept away most of the softer sand.

No it is not rocky

there is no beach it is a mangrove***so yes if you went in it is rocky and not clear full of seaweed we walked man resorts down the beach for the clear blue waters

Yes. Add it to your trip at time of booking. Otherwise the airport and all the different companies will bombard you at the airport. We used Amstar and we're satisfied with their services.

Not free from the hotel but Amstar has a rep on site you can book with ir in advance through their website.
Greekmom
I got a shuttle service right from cheap caribbean when I booked my trip. When I came out from the airport they were there. They checked our names and got us on a van. The day or 2 before your scheduled departure, there is a representative at your hotel that will set up your departure pick up time from the hotel. It was very simple. That way you didnt have to worry about finding a taxi etc.

The resort tries their best to make the resort welcome to guests and free of pests. Please inquire with the resort directly in regards to protocol. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.

We saw only one mosquito the whole time we were there.
Fatfoot
I got bit a couple of times and my husband more. We live in the midwest though so in comparison, we get bit much more back at home. We are young, too, and I spoke with my OB and she just said not to get pregnant until 6 months after the trip as a precaution. When it comes down to it, it's just not worth the risk of terrible birth defects so either wait the 6 months or choose a different vacation spot.

Hotel Description
Bluebay Grand Esmeralda: Luxury Abounds at this All-Inclusive Retreat
Warm, frothy water spills over and around you. You're stretched out in a
private Jacuzzi, on the terrace of your suite, at the all inclusive Blue Bay
Grand Esmeralda on the Mayan Riviera. Just 10 minutes from Playa del Carmen,
this award-winning resort is the perfect escape from everyday cares. It's also
a great base for exploring Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.
As you stroll along the private beach, cast an eye toward the thatched Mayan
roofs in this 180-acre, tropical paradise. When you're ready to challenge wind
and water, grab a windsurfing rig from the beach, in front of the resort, and
embark on an adventure. Or if you prefer the undersea world, you'll find
snorkeling and diving opportunities nearby.
Two, huge, free-form pools occupy more than 30,000 sq ft between the main
buildings of Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda and the beach. Designer chaise lounges,
deck-side and within the pools, invite guests to take it easy. But you'll also
find plenty of activity in the pools, from aquatic spinning to pool volleyball.
When you prefer to stay dry, catch a beach volleyball game, or try the two
tennis courts.
After an active day, consider pampering yourself with the "Labyrinth of
Sensations," at the hotel's state-of-the-art spa. This thermal-bath circuit
awakens your body with a footbath, sauna and vapor therapy. The spa offers
special packages for couples, as well as for pregnant women.
A dining dilemma awaits you. Should you choose salmon fillet with gorgonzola
cheese, accompanied by red-pepper, mashed potatoes and Mediterranean
vegetables, at Il Cuore Di Rossi? Or will it be beef medallions in Roquefort
sauce, at L'Atelier?
After a great night in one of the rooms or suites at Bluebay Grand
Esmeralda, you're ready to start exploring the fascinating, and even haunting,
Mayan pyramids at Chichen Itza, about three hours away. Another fun outing near
the hotel is Xcaret Park. Snorkel in one of two underground rivers at the park,
or swim with dolphins. From its butterfly pavilion to the bat cave and turtle
farm, Xcaret Park is as special as this Blue Bay Resort.
