I’d stay here again

Hotel is a pretty good resort. Just what you’d expect. Not too fancy but it has everything you need for a really bang up time. Plenty of gentlemen walking around selling supplements on the beach to quench your desires. Plenty of free drinks, great staff. Cheap room service. Very responsive staff to our needs. Plenty of Mami’s Walking around as well waiting to get to know you. It is a really nice place. There is a slight plumbing issue here in building 5. The water doesn’t come out of the faucets sometimes but you just have to hang in there and eventually she starts to flow. Overall, I don’t want to leave this place.

I’d stay here again

Horrible Horrible Horrible

Will never book through cheap Caribbean again. Spoke with someone on the phone because I needed help. Laney was her name. Most condescending unprofessional person I have ever spoken to in this field. Hotel is more like a 2 star hotel. Food is the worst food I have ever tasted in my entire life. We have literally been living off fruit and French fries. Fan in room broke 4 times. Wanted us to change rooms at 1130 at night. My sons room smelled musty and was hot. Our room was connected with another room, which we could hear everything. Everything is old and outdated. AC is leaking into tile floor in our room. Service was pretty good and employees at hotel were very nice though. Total waste of money. Never again. Btw. Your caption that states that I'm stretched out in a private jacuzzi is totally false. There's no jacuzzi here period. Excursion was beautiful to Xcaret. Will come back to Mexico just not through cheap Caribbean and def not this hotel.

Beautiful property, too many outside sales reps

In the plus category: This is a gorgeous property. The pool area is extensive as is the beach area. Of the many places I've traveled to, this resort really put a lot of thought into providing great areas for lying in the sun, swimming in the pool, entertainment near the pool, and plenty of chaises to use. The walkpaths to the different areas of the resort are scenic and pleasant. IT's fun to see the wildlife along the trails, including the coati, which look like a mix of monkey and raccon. If you don't want to walk you can take a tram, although you may have to wait a bit. The fitness center is very clean with new equipment--8 or so treadmills and a few step machines with separate areas for some dumbells/benches and newer weight machines. (It doesn't open until 7am though.) The main buffet area is extensive with a variety of food options, including theme nights (Asian, Mexican, Italian food) albeit sometimes the buffet seemed disconnected--you encounter the sauces and side dishes at one end, but the food items they go with are in a completely different section. The dining room staff are very friendly and courteous. We preferred the main buffet to the buffet closer to the pool, but both offer similar food. Our room was spacious and we loved the balcony with a view of both the garden and ocean. *A note to anyone reserving a room with the private jacuzzi on the second level, or the private pool on the ground level: we had a bird's eye view below us, so keep that in mind when considering how much privacy you actually have. :D On the downside: Never in my 30+ years of traveling have I ever encountered SO many sales reps trying to persuade me to attend a 90 minute session at another hotel to talk me into signing up for a travel package. (Not a time share condo, but travel you pay for like one.) The two sales reps we encountered just at the airport while trying to get to our Amstar shuttle (both claimed they were with Amstar. They were not.) were bad enough, but also upon arriving at our resort we were immediately approached by someone claiming to help us with check-in and welcome us, but who was actually again trying to get us to agree to the 90 minute sales session. During our 4 night/5 day stay we were approached a total of 5 times. These reps are on the property, walking around, in the lobby, and at the dinner reservation desks, but are not apparently not Blue Bay staff. They will not stop at a simple "No thank you." They will not stop even if you try to walk away. They will continue to talk to you, ask questions about you, and even tell you that they have children to support to get you to agree. The other issue we had was trying to get bottled water. A mini fridge with 2 bottles of water and soda is supposedly restocked daily. Ours didn't happen to be. We asked for water at the concierge desk the first day and they happily gave us 2 bottles. Two days later when we encountered the same problem, talking to the same person at the concierge desk--we were told they didn't have any water there. In summary: it's entirely possible that this is just how it is in Cancun/travel is now. As we made our way back to the airport for departure, every other couple talked about this annoyance. One couple actually attended the 90 minute meeting, but said it lasted over 2 hours and they felt trapped because they couldn't leave because they were dependant upon the sales people transporting them back to their own hotel. My advice: if you can get past this annoying interruption, Blue Bay is very nice location. (See pohotos attached.) The beach stretches all around, it's a very visually appealing property, you can do as much or as little as you enjoy. (That said, this is the first time I've encountered an all-inclusive hotel that didn't have staff approaching sunbathers to offer to bring beverages. Also, while tipping is supposedly included/not allowed, there defiintely were vacationers who were tipping, gioving the impression that if you weren't one of them, you may receive less attentive service.) If you'd like to cut short the interaction with sales reps, the best answer is "We've already signed up, thanks!" Any other answer is at least a 5-15 minute committment. If you prefer a specific spot by the pool, pick up your beach towel before breakfast and set it on your chair. People will respect that you are saving it. Dining at the buffet requires no reservation, but if you'd like to dine at the Italian, French or Mexican restaurants, or the pool restaurant that converts to a seafood/steakhouse at night--you must make those reservations the day before with either the concierge in the main lobby or the desk near the elevator in your building. The French and Italian restaurants are small and fill up quickly so reserve early in the day. Make sure you pack "formal" attire. My past experience with dress code translated to 'no swimwear, collar shirts and long pants for the men, no flip flops', but at these particular restaurants it means you should be formally dressed. We were turned away from Italian restaurant for not having formal enough footwear. (My travel mate wore flat sandals--not flip flops, but apparently not acceptable.)

Much Needed

My wife and I just returned from an amazing trip to the Blue Bay Esmeralda. The resort is clean and beautiful and the staff was great. Our concierge Carlos went above and beyond to help me celebrate my wife's birthday by making the most amazing arrangements. I would recommend this resort to anyone. The food was amazing. The beach was nice but did have some issues with the seaweed washing ashore, however, they did their best to clean it every day. If you are looking for a great vacation stay here.

What's to Love

If you want luxury, this hotel is the answer. From a personal Jacuzzi on your private terrace, to an over-sized canopy bed on the beach, you'll relish every moment at this resort.

What We'd Change

The beach is beautiful, but somewhat rocky. That doesn't matter so much, when you see the resort's two gigantic pools, which together have more than 30,000 sq ft.

Why You Should Go

The chance to experience the Yucatan, from ancient Mayan ruins to the charm of Playa del Carmen paired with a Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda all inclusive package is unbeatable.

Hotel Description

Bluebay Grand Esmeralda: Luxury Abounds at this All-Inclusive Retreat

Warm, frothy water spills over and around you. You're stretched out in a private Jacuzzi, on the terrace of your suite, at the all inclusive Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda on the Mayan Riviera. Just 10 minutes from Playa del Carmen, this award-winning resort is the perfect escape from everyday cares. It's also a great base for exploring Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

As you stroll along the private beach, cast an eye toward the thatched Mayan roofs in this 180-acre, tropical paradise. When you're ready to challenge wind and water, grab a windsurfing rig from the beach, in front of the resort, and embark on an adventure. Or if you prefer the undersea world, you'll find snorkeling and diving opportunities nearby.

Two, huge, free-form pools occupy more than 30,000 sq ft between the main buildings of Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda and the beach. Designer chaise lounges, deck-side and within the pools, invite guests to take it easy. But you'll also find plenty of activity in the pools, from aquatic spinning to pool volleyball. When you prefer to stay dry, catch a beach volleyball game, or try the two tennis courts.

After an active day, consider pampering yourself with the "Labyrinth of Sensations," at the hotel's state-of-the-art spa. This thermal-bath circuit awakens your body with a footbath, sauna and vapor therapy. The spa offers special packages for couples, as well as for pregnant women.

A dining dilemma awaits you. Should you choose salmon fillet with gorgonzola cheese, accompanied by red-pepper, mashed potatoes and Mediterranean vegetables, at Il Cuore Di Rossi? Or will it be beef medallions in Roquefort sauce, at L'Atelier?

After a great night in one of the rooms or suites at Bluebay Grand Esmeralda, you're ready to start exploring the fascinating, and even haunting, Mayan pyramids at Chichen Itza, about three hours away. Another fun outing near the hotel is Xcaret Park. Snorkel in one of two underground rivers at the park, or swim with dolphins. From its butterfly pavilion to the bat cave and turtle farm, Xcaret Park is as special as this Blue Bay Resort.

  • Accommodations as selected
