Beach lovers, you and the fam will love this escape haven - it's nestled in a jungle oasis along the luxurious Riviera Maya. The white sand and clear, turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea will keep you hypnotized. But so will the overarching concept - stay at one, play at four - along with all the 24-hour all-inclusive goodness: food, drinks, entertainment, and activities - in the water and out of it. Speaking of, there are 8 pools and three water parks in the complex, where you can splish splash the day away. But make sure you hit the 33,000-square-foot U-Spa for a stress-smashing treatment. Grab an umbrella drink, kick back and let the awesome wash over you.

Great experience
We had a wonderful trip. The agents were outstanding at anticipating our needs. Eduardo was fabulous at setting our excursions. Our tour guides were funny and quite knowledgeable. We learned a lot and had a great time doing it. A couple of the excursions were way out of our comfort zone but we would definitely do it again. The resort was beautiful and relaxing. The food was outstanding, and the drinks were great. I couldn’t have asked for a better vacation. We are already recommending you for others trips.
We've done a bunch of different all-inclusive resorts so I have room for comparison and this is a wonderful place to bring small kids. There is a TON to do, including live dolphins to watch, several awesome kiddie pools with fun slides, and a generally welcoming atmosphere for little kids. The staff were all super nice and really helpful. The spa services were wonderful as well. The one huge downside is that the food is particularly bad here. If you're a foodie you're always going to be unhappy with an all-inclusive - but this food was particularly bad all across the board.
This was the first all inclusive vacation my husband I have ever been on. It was a nice mommy and daddy get away. Barcelo Maya Beach and Caribe was a family friendly resort, and that did not bother us. The pool and extra amenities were very nice. Food and booze was average. Our main complaints were room quality and everyone pushing sales. Room could have been cleaner. Our shower and sink drains were clogged and the floor kind of skeeved me out ( cleaning staff was good though, they came everyday and cleaned up for us).Weather at the end of January was BEAUTIFUL.

Is this a good hotel for a wedding?9 answers
Also, what kind of services do they offer for weddings?

BeachBride81
Excellent! In fact, they have wedding planners for every wedding party. Please call the resort directly for details.
CaribbeanJim
not that it applies to me, but they have 2-4 weddings a week!!
they have a special desk for such planning
jk3344
If you are looking for a beautiful place to get married that overlooks the ocean then this is your place. I do not know details of the wedding costs, but I imagine they are reasonable since everything else was. There were two weddings going on while I was there, and they had car service, beautiful grounds, the staff seemed to be very accomodating. There are excursions for the bachelor/bachelortte parties which we also encountered on a snorkeling trip and plenty of nightlife at the Jaguar disco that is a state-of-the art disco complete with go-go girls. So fun I would think!
BEACHLOVER68
Funny you ask- absolutely! I forgot to mention in my review...I'm a wedding photography and happened to find out a wedding was taking place while I was there, so I met the photographers and ended up photographing a wedding while there.
They have their own "hut" for wedding coordination, a cute little chapel on the beach, and a larger chapel in the new section of the resort. But this wedding was held right on the beach, next to a club house/covered section that can be used for receptions. It is far enough north on the beach that it's very private- no other guests really venture up that far...
white sand, turquoise water, and palm trees dotting the beach- couldn't get much more picturesque!
turtleboy
They have a weddings office and can coordinate everything start to finish. It's a great setting, good food and I'm certain you'd be well-taken care of; my only concern would be time of year. We were there at the end of May and it was HOT and HUMID. Even on our off-season weekend, we saw 5-6 people get married, so it's obviously popular. They have a full service spa, etc., so I think anything you'd want to have happen during your wedding would be possible.
MNTraveler
Yes. We saw several weddings there. I would recommend to use the end of the beach on the South because less people can be involved that you don't want at your wedding. The one I saw there had a white see through tent set up. I have been there twice and saw several weddings and I think that is the best spot personally. It used to have the cataramarans there but now has a perfect scenery because they were moved. Good luck!
Pennypooh
Yes!! There are Wedding's there ever day!! My Huisband and I were planning to Marry there but chose it to be our Honeymoon instead!! Less hasstle I guess!!
bootsie
As far as services, I don't know but there were at least 2-3 weddings a day between all 5 resorts on the property. They did go out of their way to make things beautiful!!
Beachbaby1212
Yes, we witnessed two weddings going on during our stay and the setup was beautiful.

Barcelo Maya Caribe and Beach11 answers
We are thinking about booking reservations to this location, but had a couple of questions beforehand. In the details on the information it listed some activities including but not limited to kayaking, snorkling, windsurfing, fishing and scuba lessons. They all sound like a lot of fun, however, how do we find out if there is a fee for certain activities? We are on a budget and don't want to be disappointed if everything is going to cost us here and there.
Thank you in advance for your speedy response.

Specifically in reference to this information as it appears on the website, under the "Amenities" section of the resort page, anything that's listed with dollar signs next to them ($) will have an additional charge. If it does not have dollar signs, then it will be included as part of the all inclusive package.
KateCC
kayaking, sailing, free, rent snorkeling or bring your own, fishing?, they have a dock, but feed the fish, perhaps surf fishing when the beach is empty, they can arrange off grouds fishing trips, windsurfing too is free.
scuba is a fee, train in a pool, then go out. They also have, for a fee, those lift u up over the water, and fly thingies
jk3344
You can do this after your arrival, my husband went fishing and it was a lot of fun. They are very organized there, they have a station across each lobby and you can book your activities just day before.
DorothyR
Snorking was free but you had to leave $50 (refundable)-it is probably the same for the others.
missfitkim
You can snorkel free for 1 hour a day.
You get a free scuba lesson in the pool.
Beyond this there is a fee.
I did not do kayaking, fishing or windsurfing but these had prices on the board. Not sure of the details.
Gusso
All non-motorized activities are free. However, there are some activities that are free for a limited time. For example, if you snorkle you can only check out the equipment for a hour for free. If you keep it longer, there is a fee. Not sure what the fee is...we brought our own equipment.
littlebit
The only thing you have to pay extra for is the scuba lessons and fishing. One hour of snorkeling included everyday with your credit card to hold the gear but no charge. There is a charge for waverunners. Many things to do without a charge. We went and did not spend more than $200 on silly things like hair braids and pottery for kids and souvenoirs. It really is all inclusive. Alcohol and all. They have a lot to do and really is included except the stuff I told you. The website is accurate.
Pennypooh
All those activities were free when we went less than a month ago, but you do have to have a credit card to put a deposit down, in case you don't bring the items back.
BeachBum12345
All of the "Non-Motorized" watersports are included free of charge....this would be like Kayaks, canoes, 3 wheel water trikes, wind surfing. Jet-Skis, Para-sailing and things like that are fee for service. Jet-skis were $65/30 minutes USD, $110/hour USD. Don't know about the Para-Sailing or scuba. Bring your own snorkel gear if you can....it's easier.....snorkel equipment gear is free to use at the resort, but you do have to leave a deposit and it's for a period of time, not all day.
cousinIT
All the activities that you mentioned come with your package. they are free. Now if you want to go snorkeling elsewhere than that will cost you because it will take place elsewhere but if you are on a budget just stay at the hotel. The activities mentioned are just as fun
MarNYC
All non-motorized sports are included. So you can kayak, snorkle with their equipment, and windsurf free of charge. They do require you to use a life vest, also included. They offer one free scuba lesson, you would have to pay to go out on a boat. With the wharf in an area with lots of coral, you will get to see a lot of fish if you decide to go snorkling.

Good for mid-20-something couple?11 answers
My boyfriend and I are looking to take a 4-7 night vacation to somewhere warm and sunny (especially after this awful winter!) and neither of us have been to Mexico or the Caribbean. I am more of a sunbathing and snorkeling kind of girl, whereas he has to stay busy with a lot of activities or gets easily bored. If Marcelo Maya a good resort for our first Mexican vacation? Is April/May a good time to go, and will the water be warm enough? We are 26 and enjoy nightlife and shows, but are past the Spring Break point in our lives--is the demographic there too old or too young for us? Is it quiet, romantic, private? Is it easy to access activities in the area, and what is the cost of excursions from the property? Any other recommendations for a super-thrifty tropical trip?
Thanks!

Some friends of mine went to the Barcelo for their honeymoon and really enjoyed themselves (we're in our late 20s). They stayed for a week and thought the resort and beach were great. They were able to go on a few excursions (a swim with the dolphins and a party hopper tour), which can cost $100 and up depending on what you want to do, but didn't get bored staying at the resort either. If you're looking for some other good resorts, you might want to look at the Riu resorts or the Dreams resorts in Mexico too!
KateB
Yes what a rotten winter! Lots of activities here as it is part of a large 3 resort complex. April/May is great time to go as Jan-Mar can many times be more expensive. Water is very warm year round. As for demographic, I suggest this resort along with any in the Playa del Carmen area (The Royal, Gran Porto, Playacar Palace, etc) as 5th ave playa is lots of fun! For quiet, do Secrets Capri. For romantic, do Valentin. Thanks!
CaribbeanJim
This is a great place to stay, they have five different hotels together, each one is different, for family we choose colonial, but tropical or palace had a lot of young people, there is a night club that you can go, we were there in April, we stayed 7 days, weather was great, 96' everyday, water warm all day in the pool or the ocean. In the ocean was too salty for us. They offer different shows each day, so many things to do there. They have golf course, tennis, gym, shopping centers, a lot more. If you want to go outside the resort they are very organized, you make reservation and you go. There are restaurants in the resort, but you have to make reservation, I did after our arrival, great food. Italian, japanese, Mexican, steakhouse, etc.
DorothyR
HI! I really think you would enjoy Barcelo then. This was our first Mexico trip too. We traveled April 12-17 and the weather couldn't have been more perfect. The water was very warm! There is a nice mix, lots of couples but also some families. The resort is quiet at night which sets up a nice romantic evening. The room/balcony was private for us. We took a snorkling excursion that cost us $80 each but included gear, food, and open bar-it was an awesome experience. We also were apart of entertainment one night 'Battle of the Sexes'-super funny!! The other shows were great too. I def. recommend!
missfitkim
We just went there and the water was great and the resort is awesome. Great value! The Jaguars night club is like a Las Vegas club. Pay the extra for the VIP area. The turtle snorkeling tour is great ($80 per person) and that whole area is safer than the city.
jp14
Barcel is jusr what you are looking for I am positive. I just returned last week from there and I loved it!! It has things just for your age..Jaguars is a nighclub that is so much frin. My daughter is 29 and she had the tme of her life. There is also romantic and private places. It was a grat experiance. There are also extra trips such as Tumul, the Mayan ruins and Excel Ha is a river from te ocean and has great snorkling, you can also swim with the dolphins, if thats your thing. TYou will fall in love with the aqua ocean that is like bath water... Just an awesome resort! Have fun!
Darc
this would be a great place for you- mid-aged (not young party-ers). Lots of Europeans and Canadians, so a fun mix. Good shows at night. A new dance/nightclub (need an upgrade for that). The snorkeling off the beach is some of the best around...and you must try the cenote (underwater cave) across the street- see my other "turtleboy" review. There's plenty of options for add-on excursions...
and the price was great when we booked it...
turtleboy
Hi Lindsey, We just did five nights at Barcelo and I think it would fit all your needs. I would say that during the low season there aren't LOTS of activities, but there's a fun, busy pool at Barcelo that does things like water aerobics, trivia, volleyball and water polo that would be enjoyable for your boyfriend that isn't far from the place where you'd do your snorkeling and sunbathing. April/May is a great time to go - it's hot! - and the water in the ocean was very warm. Barcelo has great nighttime entertainment - two nightly shows plus the disco - and the shows are different every night, so you always have two choices. We only did one excursion to go dancing in Playa del Carmen - I think excursions are always kind of expensive. I don't think you'd feel out of place being 26. You're able to find the atmosphere you want. It's not super romantic because it's a family resort, but my husband and I weren't overwhelmed by the number of kids, either. It was quiet enough for us, especially in the off season.
MNTraveler
This would be a great place for you. I am the relaxing one and my husband likes to have things to do. You get one hour of snorkeling a day, cataramarans, kayaks, nightly shows, tennis, putt-putt, etc. Or just hang at the many pool bars. Beach is wonderful. It is quite large and has lots of romantic spots. It would be perfect for you. We went on our ten year anniverserary and then returned with kids.
Pennypooh
Decent place for a young couple. Lots of young people and young families. huge club and nightly shows. We took an excusion that included ziplining/repelling/cave snorkeling, lunch then a trip to Tulum ruins for $100. Lots of snorkeling at resort. $50 deposit on equip. Lots of people had their own. Lots of activites to keep you busy. Jet ski rental is about $60 half hr. Kayak, water bikes, wind surfing all free. Take a taxi into playa del carmen for good food/shopping. Don't take their shuttle, you will only get a short time in the town and there is a lot to do.

The Barcelo properties in the Riviera Maya are a great value and the beach is beautiful. If you're looking for something adults only, you could also consider looking at the Palace Resorts and the Secrets resorts.

I would definitely recommend Barcelo. Laying by the ocean was amazing-very quiet, just listening to the waves and the birds. The pool was a bit loud when the entertainment staff was out. My boyfriend and I were very lazy and loved doing just that at this beautful resort! : )
missfitkim
NEVER been to a nicer place than this...see my review and GO there.!!!
Carribeanmon
Our 2nd time here, and loved it- here's what to do...bring along an inflatable pool/air mattress. Push each other around the pool in the morning, massage each other's feet and scalp while your doing it, push her up to the swim-up bar, get a couple free drinks (pina coladas and mud slides worked for me...) and you win major points! They've got several massive pools- try each out- some are very quiet, some are busier with more kids and activities...the most relaxing vacation for us- we went for our 20th anniversary and LOVED it. Take a nap in the afternoon or snorkel right off the beach (free with a deposit, some of the best shore snorkeling around)- the beach is beautiful and large, with palm trees for shade and plenty of lounge chairs. Catch the shows at night, or take a trip into Playa del Carmen for great shopping (in the evening- not as hot...)
-you'll love it!
turtleboy
That is exactly the experience we had at Barcelo, Bonnie. If you are considering this resort for that type of vacation, I think you'd be very pleased.
MNTraveler
Love the Riu on Paradise Island. Economical, and low key. We don't go on any excursions at all. All inclusive, food is wonderful, service is excellent and price can't be beat. There are very few children there also. At our age, who wants to deal with other people's children? LOL
Roxie1996
we were in the same position as you describe...just wanted to relax..This was the place to be. We did not take any excursions or even leave the property. We spend time on the beach and in the pools, took siestas each day and ate at the buffets. We really got to relax.
neelique
This facility has many things to do but you don't have to. It has beautiful grounds and lots of places to relax. The beach is large so you can get away from everyone if you like. We have been with kids and without and both different vacations but same spot.

Looking to visit early June and wondering if anyone has any first hand experience with the rainy season at this time of the year. thanks!!!
7 years, 96 months ago
tom
Mexico's rainy season runs from May through November with August and September being the wettest months. Weather is very unpredictable - Mexico was very lucky this past hurricane season. Because of the tropical climate it will most likely rain every day you are there regardless of the season.
JenCC
June is getting into the hottest time of the year. It will be very humid and very hot. I would suggest if possible to avoid June, July and August.
SweetVixenette
I have been to every island in the Carribean and just got back from Cancun. Rainy season in June? Never heard of that. It's really really hot and humid in June. Also, it depends on where you are going. Closer to the equator, Bonnaire, Curacao, Aruba... you are not going to get any rain since it stays pretty much the same temperature year round. Hot. However, rainy season starts normally at the end of summer (which is the same summer that we have). Remember, high season is from December - May normally because the whether is not as hot and humid as it will be in June, July, August, and into September. Hope that helps.

Carribeanmon
No rain in June. It is very Hot and Humid. Just came back from there last week. It might rain for 3 minutes a day, but besides that you'll have great weather.
JackieH
We were just there from mid to late May and it only rained on us twice each day for about a half hour from about 5:30 - 6 then stopped. It wasn't even enough to be truly annoying. Can't speak directly to June, except to say that the temperatures are warmer then, so there's likely to be the greater possibility of thunderstorm activity in the afternoons.
MountainMax
We were there end of May, and it only rained one day. It was still warm and beautiful even with the rain. We sat in the pool much of the afternoon! It was a nice break from the hot and made us not feel guilty about taking a nap.
MNTraveler
Just spent a week at the Riu on Paradise Island. Never saw a drop of rain. It was a bit windy, but with the sun being so hot, it was a welcome relief. Let me add, it did NOT prevent us from sitting by the pool or going to the beach. When we went in October, it rained a bit, but was gorgeous right after.
Roxie1996
We've been to the area 6 times now and always in late May or early June. Never had any real problems with rain.
Beeman
It rained a little the first day and that was it for the rest of the week (June 5-10, 2011)
Colemanx4
just returend June 8...it does rain each day -long showers--but in our five days, we only had one half day of warm rain. We still were out early each day and got to the beach from 8-10 before the rain cam

How are the dining options at Barcelo?12 answers
I am reading a lot of information that the only dining options in this all inclusive package are the buffets. Is this true? How much extra do they charge for the a la carte restaurants? Is the extra money worth it?
7 years, 96 months ago
Drea26
The all-inclusive plan at the Barcelo includes just the buffet restaurants. Reservations for the ala carte restaurants are based on the length of your stay - 1 reservation per 4 night stay and 2 per 7 night stay. Additional costs in these restaurants are typically for prime cuts of beef, lobster, and shrimp. The prices will vary according to availability.
JenCC
no not all buffets. depending on your length of stay, and the class/quality you spend- there are 3 or 4 levels, and the lenght of stay determins how many sit downs you receive with the inclusive- they are very nice, and any extra visits you pay for. $15.00- 25 and very much worth it. it's a international family place, and although drinks are included, it is a calm, serene setting, quiet at night too.
jk3344
you can only eat at 2 restaurants that are included in the all inclusive, then you have the buffets. cost you $15 a person to eat at the other ones but well worth it!
putt
A la cartes are not extra, but you need to make your reservations as far in advance as possible (I would say at least 3 days). The buffet is so massive and awesome that you will seriously not be missing out if you didn't do the reserved restaurants. The fine dining restaurant is the best, the Asian second, and in my opinion, the steakhouse was ok. I'm not kidding, just wait...you'll see what I mean about the buffet.
jasmith79

RobertB
i wasnt aware of any othe dining options. We had the all-inclusive and it includes several nights in which you can eat at a restaurant, you just have to make a reservation. food was very good at this resort. Dont know why you would pay for anything extra. If you dont want to eat at resort for all meals, go to Playa Del Carmen, about 15 minutes north- the whole town is shopping and food!!
irishgirl4343
There are restaurants that you can choose, but you have to make reservation, no charge. Is worth it. You choose from Italian, steakhouse, Mexican, Japanese, seafood, etc. I went there and food was great. Dish is not as big as in USA, but great. Man has to wear long pants, otherwise you can't go. Restaurants are included in all inclusive, also you can have snack (lunch) all day long. Unlimited drinks. No extra charge only tips.
DorothyR
We got 2 free tickets to the a la cart restaurants, which were Mexican and Spanish themed. I think you can upgrade for $15/person. I don't think it is worth it if you get 2 tickets like we did.
missfitkim
We stayed for 7 nights and we where allowed 3 nights of a la carte resturants for no additional fee. It was fine with us.
Gusso
Not true!! You have the one main dining buffet hall that has a different theme every night for dinner. You have two medium sized buffets for lunch that are located at the pools - one at each pool. The dining hall also has the breakfast buffet which is large as well. As part of your all-inclusive package you have the option of the Mexican and Spanish restaurants that are located at the Caribe and also either the steakhouse or italian restaurant located next door. They mislead you a little with the steakhouse and italian as they fail to tell you upon checkin, but they ARE included. You can eat at a sit down restaurant 3 times - once in each of the 3 restaurants - or 2 times in one restaurant and once in the other. There are definitely sit down restaurant options though.
BEACHLOVER68
Not all true...stay up to 4 nights and I think you get 1 non-buffet night at a restaurant. We stayed 5, and got two choices- We did steakhouse (by the beach) and Mexican, and both were very good. The other nights at the buffet were very good- often a theme night (one night Mexican, one Italian for us), and lots of food variety that is very good.
turtleboy
Depending on how long you are there, you would get either 2 or 3 sit-down meals. If you are at the Caribe or Tropical (my guess, since we also booked through CheapCaribbean) the restaurant options would be Mexican or Spanish. I highly recommend the upgrade option if you drink anything other than beer. It allows you to drink premium liquor, free drinks at the Disco, access to four sit-down restaurant options (we ate at the steak house, Japanese twice, and Italian, and would recommend doing the steak house and Japanese the whole time you're there, though we've also heard good things about the Seafood restaurant). There's a lounge with 24 hour hot snacks and a serve-yourself bar. You also have access to buffets that are air conditioned. It made our five day stay a lot more interesting. I would've been bored with the food had we not done the upgrade. I believe the current cost for the a la carte restaurants is $30 per person, and I would pay that for the Japanese restaurant only.

Is it worth paying for the privilege upgrade? We are staying at the caribe for our honeymoon. Do we tell them ahead it is our honeymoon?11 answers

Club Premium rooms may be available at the time of check in for an additional charge. If you haven't mentioned your Honeymoon in your room requests please email us at reservations@cheaparibbean.com and we can let them know! Congrats!
KellyCC
No the regular room was great
NUTNBUTBEACH
I'm not sure what you are considering a privilege upgrade, however, I don't think spending extra money at that is necessary. Without that privilege of going to 1 of the 5 hotels, you are only missing out on 1 of the hotels. I did not go over there, however, can't imagine what it had that the other 4 didn't. Just my thoughts.
ScubaExplorer
Yes, is worth and tell them about your honeymoon
DorothyR
Unless you are going to be spending more time in your room than outside. I am not sure if they do anything 'special' for honeymooners, but it wouldn't hurt to tell them. Maybe you get a bottle of champagne : )
missfitkim
No. The rooms are exactly the same and the buffets are SUPERB, I am an amateur chef and know good food...
Carribeanmon
Not sure if you stayed there yet, but I would highly recommend this for a honeymoon. I would tell them as you never know what special service you might get. Personally, I would not spend the extra money upgrading. We did fine with the regular room and it was beautiful. Depends on what your expectations are though.
BEACHLOVER68
No, the $300 upgrade is not worth the money. The food at the buffet is outstanding and there is more than enough variety to satisfy everybody. The Corona is cold and the house liquor is ok. You can utilize any of the pools or beach areas without paying the extra dollars.
Tmack
yes- tell them it's your honeymoon- it was our 20th anniversary, and they congratulated us when we arrived, and we found a cake and champaign (all free) waiting for us the first night.
-we didn't get the upgrade, and didn't miss it one bit. We stayed 5 nights and got 2 reserved restaurants- plenty for us- and we were very happy with them. Sure, the upgrade will get you a few perks, but don't feel it's needed for a good trip- the service and food are great to start with...
turtleboy
We stayed at the Caribe in May 2011, and I recommend paying for the upgrade if you drink anything other than beer or want to enjoy sit-down dinners or air conditioning while you eat. We were there five days and I would've been very bored with the food options had we not upgraded. With the Caribe, you'd have access to two very similar buffets, two poolside buffet restaurants, and either Mexican or Spanish sit-down dinners (which I didn't hear great things about). With the upgrade, you can eat at the steak house (we loved it), Japanese restaurant (also loved it), Italian (didn't love it at all) or Seafood (didn't try it). You can eat at any of those restaurants every night, as long as you get a reservation in advance (we didn't have any difficulty). You also have access to premium liquor at a couple air-conditioned bars (no air conditioning at the stuff you have standard access to), a couple other buffets with air conditioning, a private internet cafe and a lounge with 24 hour hot snacks and a serve-yourself premium bar. You also get free drinks at the Disco, which you don't get if you don't upgrade. We were really glad we did it.
MNTraveler

can you get internet service in the room?12 answers
7 years, 95 months ago
Nick
No, not in the room, I learned that quickly. It is only available in the lobby. But the lobby is so big you won't have a problem at any time of day finding a nice place to sit and surf.
jasmith79
No, only in lobby area
RobertB
You can get internet in your room but it costs more. You can pay when you get there. In there business center each room can get 15 minutes of internet each day for free. Plus your on vacation so let go of internet and enjoy the time with friends and family!
Ajmill34
yes, I believe you paid about $12 per 24 hours of use which my husband loved. He just needs to check emails several times a day and not having to pay "per day" saved us money. I dont think we even used it more than 24 hours total- you just have to remember to log off!!
irishgirl4343
no, but the lobby worked fine
NUTNBUTBEACH
No. You have to pay for it in the business center. $3.00 per 15 minutes of use.
ScubaExplorer
yes, but there is a fee. Not quite sure how much the fee is but it is alot.
JackieH
Yes, 12 dollars for 24 hours a day if you book your room at Beach or Caribe, for others I don't know.
oohuyenoo
Not to my knowledge, but I was on vacation and refused to bring my laptop or work with me, so I never inquired.
BEACHLOVER68
yes
jesusgal
Yes, you can. If you don't upgrade to the premium option (which I recommend and think is a great value if you drink anything other than beer), you'd need to pay for wireless. They do, however, have a lot of free internet cafes on the property that are easy and convenient to use.
MNTraveler
No, there is no internet service in the rooms. The Riu does have free internet available in the lobby. There is lots of seating at tables, the bar and just outside the dining area on couches and easy chairs. There are also table in the pool area that you can get it.
Roxie1996
Wifi was spotty in my room. There was a day when wifi was down too. Overall it was usable, but don't expect blazing fast speeds.

how do you call a cab from the resort?12 answers
7 years, 93 months ago
jj
Just go to the front door. There are always taxi's there waiting. If there aren't, just ask the bell hop. They are always there available to help in anything you need.
Roxie1996
The conceirge can assist you in calling a cab from the resort.
MariaCC
Just ask the bell hop or door man, but seriously consider renting a car because the cab fare will put a dent in your budget.
Dino720
There are always cabs waiting in the front of the hotel. I never had to wait for one.
lily0gi
There is a taxi stand out front. You just tell them you need a taxi and they call one for you. It's about a 5-10 min wait.
Sci1st
Just see the bellman in the front of the hotel lobby. Cabs are $23 USD to Playa but someone told me they got a bus for $5 USD from the hotel.
Colemanx4
front desk..concierge is very accomodating
neelique
You can ask them to at the resort or you pay less if you walk to the entrance and hail a cab. It is still expensive. There is great shopping in the resort with great prices though. I have done both at different trips.
Pennypooh
Ask the conceirge at your hotel, or the receptionist. Also, if you aren't traveling far, you can walk out to the highway, stand on the side of the road and Vans with a color strip down the side (usually orange or yellow) will pull over and take you anywhere for $3 a person!
Pdub
The bellboy at the front entrance was always happy to call a cab, which arrives within 5mins
Vapp
The gentleman that works out front, not sure if he is considered a bell boy or not, but he calls them for you and they are already waiting on the resort so it only takes a couple of minutes.
BarceloFan
The front desk wll take care of all that for you. There is actually people at tables day and night by the check in counter. They do everything for you.

We're scheduled to arrive in Cancun at 9pm. Is it safe to rent a car from the airport and drive to Barcelo at night?11 answers
7 years, 93 months ago
j
I'd HIGHLY recommend NOT! Do not rent a car at all in my opinion, and definitely not at night! We rented a car, drove down to Playa del Carmen and then back to Cancun. Upon leaving Cancun, we were extorted by police to pay $100. You do not want to be involved in that type of situation. On that night as we were leaving Cancun (on the strip with all the hotels and malls) we saw about four other cars pulled over. I can only imagine the same 'game' was being played on them as well. Travel by taxi or hire an airport transfer. It's worth your peace of mind! Other than that, it was easy to drive and navigate, but you never know if you'll get involved in a situation such as described above, which happened in early May 2011.
LiveBold
I would not. Schedule transportation through the hotel via Olympus Tours...well worth it.
Colemanx4
Ive not rented in Cancun but I heard the whole time we were there to NEVER drive @ night. To many potholes and WAY to many drunk drivers!!! I would totally suggest NO, grab a cheap hotel then leave early.
newlyengaged
While I dont think safety is compromised, I would prefer not to make a long drive at night...and it gets remote after about 25 minutes, so if you have vehicle problems it could get dicey
neelique
We opted to have a van take us direct to the resort. I don't know if you would have issues or not, but there are at least 3 armed police checkpoints on the way to the resort. We did not get in until 9:00pm either and I am sure glad we had a private van take us from the airport to the resort and then back again when we left. Barcelo is all inclusive with so much to do that renting a car would have not been worth it for us. We spent $100 for this service and I am sure renting a car for 7 days would have been much more than this and we didn't have to worry about getting stopped, pulled over etc. Have fun!!
SMITTY12
I would NOT recommend this as the law enforcement is extremely different down there. Rental cars are targeted for pullovers and the officers ask for cash right then and there. Everything in your wallet is usually the only thing suitable. This happened to three of my friends who each traveled there on separate occasions. My father-in-law just had a similar experience two weeks ago while there on business.
You are safer booking a late night transfer through your hotel or travel agency.
crimsonsinger12
Yes, but I would be aware that it is a long drive. Do not stop off in Playa Del Carmen if you are a girl. Once you get out of the airport it is a straight shot. It does take an hour though with a crazy Mexican driving. They drive crazy so be aware of your surroundings. Also, be aware of the Mexican's crossing the street etc. The signage is great but you go just a little past to a turn around to enter so if you are tired and don't know you might go to Tulum. Have a great trip!
Pennypooh
I would not drive in Mexico.
bailey56
If you are goin to rent a car, just make sure you watch out for the speed bumps!!! On our trip to Barcelo, there were little steel speed bumps in the road that you had to come to a complete stop to not hit. And at every 5th speed bump there were polica, some pulled people over to check their belongings, others didn't.
Pdub
better to get a cab - you won't need a car for the resort. Or arrange shuttle through cheap carribean.
vacationbuddies
I wouldn't choose to rent a car just because they drive really crazy over there...plus there are random speed bumps on the highways and roads so you might get a few surprises as you're driving. It would be safer and easier to schedule a transfer with your hotel.
dozias
Sure, it is a long stretch of road but mostly straight and well guarded.
Snerfdog
I dont think that it is not safe but why not set up taxi service before you leave. There is no need to do it when you get there. They will meet you right outside the airport door and drive you to the resort. I would recommend that.

We offer roundtrip airport transfers that can be added on with your package. Prices do vary depending on the type of transfer service you choose.
MariaCC
cheapcarribean book our trip with Olympus tours it was not expensive.
tucker3
the transfers arranged from CC were well priced. It seems most people take one from the airport..didnt see many cabs lined up
neelique
We opted for the personal transfer from Olympus Tours and it worked great. They were very personable and it was nice having our own van to take us direct to the resort and not share a ride. Very safe and never felt threatened at all . Our flight came in 3 hours late so we did not leave the airport until 9:30 pm. I had my wife and 2 teenage daughters with me and everything went well. I am sure you could save a few dollars with a cab, but going to and from the airport safely is something I would not try to go cheap on.
SMITTY12
We were very happy with Olympus Tours. They kept us safe at the Cancun airport which is full of hecklers, crooked taxi drivers, and locals looking to make a buck. They all wear orange shirts that say Olympus. The transfer cost was included in our booking via cheapcaribbean.com so I cannot speak to the overall cost, but we tipped them well for their service.
crimsonsinger12
We did private travel with Olympus through Cheap Carribean for $100 round trip which was great! The trip to our hotel from the airport was an hour total so I thought for four people that was really reasonable. It was nice not to have to stop at twenty different hotels to drop off people. So it took a little less time than normal. My husband and I spent $75 for two of us the last time and had to stop so I would recommend the private.
Pennypooh
We took the private transport from the airport to barcelo mayan for $200.00 roundtrip for 4 of us. I think it is a little more expensive (about $20 more for 4 people) to get the private bus, but then you don't have to travel with other people for over an hour and stop at various resorts on your way to your own.
BeachBum12345
We were told that busses travel from the airport to the resort. You just have to walk out the front doors and ignore everyone that talks to you. Unfortunately we didn't hear that till we were leaving the airport from another couple. We ended up going through one of the yellow travel companies in the airport for $85, one way, and $20 back. Buy both ways.
Pdub
Get a private cab, book through Cheapcaribbean for a set price. Its much better and cheaper to do it this way since the driver can charge whatever they want.
shawluvmydachs
Use Olympus agents. They are in bright orange shirts. We had the same driver to and from the airport. He was very good. It is always best to have your airport transfers ready before you go.
Cancun1279
They offer shuttle bundle packages for a reasonable rate. Only down fall is you will be making some stops at other resorts on the way to offload other tourists.
jap1970
The trip was longer than expected (Olympus) since we had to make 3 other hotel stops before we reached ours.

The tour company we use in Mexico is called Olympus Tours. Their direct website is www.olympus-tours.com/ and allows you to chat live with a representative. The tour company would have the most accurate information to answer your questions.
MariaCC
Hi, we stayed at the Barcelo Maya Caribe hotel and I must say that the ruins are pretty far out but that's true of any of the hotels along the Riviera Maya. We visited Chechen-Itza and we also went to something called the Mayan explorer. If I had to do it over I would only do the Mayan explorer but I know Chenchen-Itza is one of the wonders of the world so I can see the attraction there so go to both if you have the money but if you don't just go to the Mayan explorer. It's worth the money (119) you won't regret it. Also all excursion come with a tour guide and transportation so don't fret about how long between your hotel and your destination. The time will go by fast.
MarNYC
I can only speak for the Barcelo, and yes, it is central to the ruins.
ParkerBrown
Alot closer than most resorts. Most are 30 minutes to an hour away. The Caribe is right in the middle of the area.
IronRange
Yes very safe!! Us girls also go to Playa Del Carmen for a shopping day!!!

My boyfriend and I just got back at the end of febuary beginning of march from Barcelo Maya Caribe. We went on two excursions. Tulum and Coba. They both were amazing... Tulum is was amazing because you got to learn what each individual building was used for. During the Coba excursion it was AMAZING! We actually got to learn about the mayan tribes and their culture and food making. This one I would not miss. Also on this one you get to visit an actual tribe, repel into a cenote where they tribe gets their spring water for their families, and zip line across a lake. The overrall experience was amazing and well worth the time. They both were a full day excursions :) Best of luck deciding!
Miller83
Chichen Itza is about 3 hours, Coba 75 minutes, Tulum 30 minutes
momofthree
hello tulum is close to both resorts 20-30 mins coba is 2hrs and chitchen itza 3 hrs. they are far but worth visiting. take good walking shoes. a lot of walking.
lizzyjay
We visited Coba when we were there 2 years ago. This area cannot be reached by taxi. Only a "tour" or by rental car. It is the shadiest of the two Mayan ruins down in the Riviera area. At your resort you have a number of tours you can choose from to see nature preserves. Xcaret is supposed to be really cool but we have'nt made it there yet.

The Beach is sugar sand. Pure white and soft. There are some small rocks in the water however.

The beach in front of all 5 resorts is beautiful, clean and well kept. There are some rocky areas but overall NO!! You can wade out far into the ocean and still see your feet with no rocks!! Great snorkeling there too.
Beachbaby1212
absolutely not in the swimming area- the kayaking area and snorkeling area have reefs
Waterfun4life
The beach and swimming area is smooth sand with a few rock outcrops. The swimming area goes out for hundreds of yards with a very gentle slope. I could go out for 200 yards and still stand up in the water.

This resort is very family oriented, offering lots of activities to keep the children engaged and occupied. It also has a Kids Club available for the young children which gives them an opportunity to play and be cared for in a safe environment with other children.
ccsusan1
At all 5 of the resorts on the property there were children but I will say that the best for you and the kids is the Colonial...by far more kid friendly with a fantastic kiddie park at the pool!!!
Beachbaby1212
This hotel is better suited to 16 to 25 year olds.
PoppaJoe
They have a children's club called Barcy. They have a pool section with a bunch of water slides. And a hut with crafts and other activities. I think your 4 year old would have fun and there would be activities for them, but I don't think there would be much for a 1 year old. Families I saw with kids that young were the ones doing stuff with them.
lovedgettingaway
We saw several families the children of all ages. They have some planned activities. Great outdoor play areas. And the offer babysitting for all ages at a pretty reasonable price. All the meals have a few items aimed at children I think you will find it pretty easy to take them.

The beaches in Mexico are government owned so we are unable to confirm if metal detecting allowed on a beach.

Waterfun4life

elltchr
Yes, you fly to Cancun. We selected the 'private' shuttle service to and from the airport. It worked great since the resort is about an hour from the hotel. The "private' means you don't have to share ride with others from other hotels, and make several stops.
LETraveler
The resort itself does not provide transportation. You have to arrange your own. We used Olympus Tours (they were great, it was shuttle van, so it wasn't private, but they were great). It was $40 per person round trip to and from the resort and airport. Yes, you would fly into Cancun.

Yes, they do have some indoor activities if it rains. The resort also offers 7 bars and lounges and there is also shopping nearby.
KristenCC
There were covered ping pong tables, pool tables, and such. There were several bars and lounges inside. Each room has a TV, some with private balconies. I didn't notice any organized indoor games or activities (there was a kid activity "hut" that was covered, don't know if it still ran activities during the rain). It did rain while we were there but we just went out on our balcony and read a book while it rained.

To be honest, we loved to be in the water when it rained. People would head for cover and we would head for the water. But yes, they do have things to do inside. And there are covered areas pretty much all over the resort. And the showers don't last very long.

Peanut Allergy2 answers
I am planning a trip to Barcelo Maya in Riviera Maya with my husband and three children. One of my children has a severe peanut allergy and has to stay away from anything containing peanuts, food cooked with peanut oils or food that might have even come in contact with any peanuts or peanut product. I have traveled to this resort many times before having a child with peanut allergy and we have had a great experience. I was wondering how common peanut or cooking with peanut oils is in this resort? Would this travel be safe for a child with peanut allergy? Thanks!

Whenever there is any question regarding specific dietary needs, especially something as severe as a peanut allergy, we always reccommend contacting the resort directly. They may be able to put you in contact with the chef directly to inquire about a specialized menu.

do not go find another place i my self got very ill there

What can resort credits be used for?4 answers
6 years, 75 months ago
Terabc
Resorts credits are not applicable for all bookings as there are booking stipulations which would need to be met. However, the resort credits can be used towards various services at the Spa, room upgrades, room service, dining & beverages, additional resort activities and excursions, Barcelo Club and various shopping boutiques on the resort. --- Please Note: Reservations for tours, services and amenities must be requested at the resort upon arrival and are subject to availability. Restrictions apply. Inclusions and restrictions vary by hotel.
MariaCC
The resort credits are only for 50% off on useless items like bad wine or champagne, 50% off on the business center (which didn't work), 50% off on laundry service. The resort credit requires that you still spend money to get the credit.
oceansnmountains
The resort credits are worthless. $200 for room upgrade, $10 off vodka. Really stupid things. But I'm pretty sure you can look on the website for the coupon specifics.
ajge
pretty much nothing! Don't count on using them.
Laney12319
They are used for discounts in the spa, bottles of wine and excursions purchased at the resort

Upgrading?4 answers
After reading reviews and Q&A I am seeing a lot of people talking about "Upgrading" but I don't see any option for it while booking on CC and there is only 1 room option. How do you upgrade and how much does it cost? Thanks!
6 years, 75 months ago
Nick H
You upgrade when you get to the resort. It is 20USD per person per person. The upgrade gives you access to extra restaurants and areas of the resort (another beach and pool as well as some more activities). If you are considering it I would strongly suggest you spend the first day or two in the area you have already paid for and if it isn't enough, then upgrade.
JohnH
CheapCaribbean.com has a contract for the Superior room category, however, you are able to upgrade your room directly with the resort upon arrival. Rates would be at the resort's discretion and based on their current availability at check in.

We didn't upgrade. Really didn't spend much time in the room. And the standard "superior" room is pretty nice. I think you could call CheapCaribbean to find out. And you can upgrade at check-in for sure. If you are getting a resort credit, you can use part of that for the upgrade if you do it at check-in. They are really good about explaining all your options and they don't try to sell you an upgrade.
Rob13
I would call them and someone should help you! But I stayed in that room that cheap carribean had, the lowest option, and the room was nice! Not gorgeous but we really spent no time in there besides sleeping and getting ready. So not a bad choice if you want to save a few dollars! Huge bed and they clean the room really well every day! But otherwise I would just call.

what are some good choices for excursions?5 answers
we want to visit the ruins and so some snorkeling. what excursion is a good one..
6 years, 75 months ago
gurnee, illinois
They are excursions which can be added during the booking process. You are also able to add excursions directly with an Olympus Tours representative at the resort.
MariaCC
We bought an excursion at the airport for snorkeling at Isla Mujeres. DO NOT BUY IT! Its an all day affair with only 30 min of snorkeling. They take you to shop on the island, swim with a nurse shark, lunch. We were so disappointed in only 30 min for snorkeling. We were gone from 730am to 7pm. Exhausting!
ajge
The Atv excursion was great . You go into cenotes which r like caves and you get to go swimming in one of them. It's beautiful. Swimming with the Dolphins was great too
Jnj7189
Chichen itza is a good excursion to the Mayan pyramid

We went to the Tulum ruins and it was breathtaking! We did some snorkeling at the resort.

Men are required to wear long pants and closed toe shoes at the Specialty Restaurants. You may wear sundress, beach wear (bathing suits, flip flops, swim cover ups) are not allowed in the specialty restaurants.
KristenCC
men must wear long pants and sundresses are fine
flowermom
Yes, men have to wear pants. No tshirts or sandals for men. We didn't see anyone in jeans. Women can wear sundresses or capris.
ajge
No. Long pants, and that includes jeans, are only required in the reservation only restaurants. No dress code for women in any restaurants. No wet swim suits in restaurants or buffet though.

Our friends, that we would be travelling with, is allergic to most beers. In the States he can ony drink Coors Light. What are the chances that he could find Coors Light Beer either there or near there? Do you serve any American beer?

Majority of resorts offer local brand beers. For more information on the exact brands please contact the resort directly.
CaitlinCC
The only beer they have is corona. In cans or on draft. That's it for the resort. Their main drinks are mixed/frozen.
MarcoA
I think I saw Coors Light but not positive. We drink Corona. They have American brands as well as Mexican beers. They have Miller Lite for sure.
Rob13
Seriously. Your in another country. Enjoy what they have to offer. If you like American beer , vacation in America. Allergies are something not to mess with in different countries...You may want to go with hard liquor or coke. They have plenty of options to choose from.

Does this resort have a private beach?5 answers
Is the beach roped off for this resort to make it private or are there a lot of vendors and people walking on the beach from other resorts? I can't stand crowded beaches with tons of vendors selling stuff...
5 years, 67 months ago
beachbride
Please be advised that all beaches in Mexico are public beaches.
MariaCC
We were on the beach everyday for a week and never saw 1 vendor...
Ecken1968
No private beach. The beaches are owned by the Mexican government so I don't think any resorts own their beaches although they do maintain them. And the do it very well. There are only vendors from the Resort. And not many of them. We were there 6 days and maybe saw 8 vendors total. They are not going to get in your space without you inviting them. You have to show interest and ask for information. Mostly selling spa services, tours, something like that. Beaches are not crowded at all. Never had a problem finding lounge chairs. Never crowded in the water. You are really going to like this place.
Rob13
There was no vendors at all selling items on the beach

How do I book a room facing the ocean and or pool? When is Hhly Week? Are ther usually lots of children at the resort?3 answers
5 years, 64 months ago
Delta, PA
At this time, Cheap Caribbean only offers the garden view room category. Holy week is the week between Palm Sunday and Easter. This is a family-friendly resort and there will be children at the resort
AlixCC
Rooms on the ocean or by the pools are "club" level rooms --- you have to pay more. When we were there, there were a lot of children, but it was a week when school was out.
Travelhappy
CheapCaribbean should be able to get you a ocean view/pool view. The pool is between the building and the ocean so if you see one you probably see the other. You could also upgrade at check-in. There were some children when we were there but they really never disturbed anyone. Never heard them while in our room.

What can the $1200 resort credit be used for?4 answers
5 years, 64 months ago
SLN
Various services at the Spa, room upgrades, room service, dining & beverages, additional resort activities and
excursions, Barcelo Club and various shopping boutiques on the resort. Note: Reservations for tours, services and
amenities must be requested at the resort upon arrival and are subject to availability. Restrictions apply, this is a credit provided by the resort and is subject to change.
LizCC
Credits are used for services at the resort. They are basically coupons for different things. For example, my girlfriend and I went to the spa to get a couples massage. Included in the credits worth $1200 was $100 off spa treatments. It includes other items like $30 off a $80 bottle of wine, $200 for a room upgrade, $10 off to VIP at the dance club, etc.
RobbyRob
You get small (percentage-wise) discounts on things like massages at the spa or wine that you have to buy at dinner (the house wine is lousy). But it's a very small discount. Even with our credit, the cheapest bottle of wine we could find cost us $55.
Travelhappy
pretty much nothing..... they are worthless. So is the Casino $20.00 match play.

Please contact the beach experts at 800-915-2322 for information on the room categories available and any recommendations for the staff's children.

Rooms that face pool and ocean directly are junior suites. You can upgrade but don't know the cost. Almost all rooms have some limited view of ocean from balcony. All have balcony or patio.
Rob13
They just want money. Everyone you encounter in Mexico from airport to hotel just wants money. Even though says all inclusive I still tipped a lot.
Cheese7204
Anything beauty-related, nail polishes, hair ties ets. For boys maybe some kind of gadget.
They have swim out suites that you can pay more per day to stay. The place is so beautiful that you really won't spend much time inside. It's big so every day can be an adventure to explore different part.

The dis between this resort and 5th Ave. is about 12 miles.

Not sure about the specific street you are looking for, but I recall seeing a road sign that said Playa del Carmen was 25 km north of the resort.
SistersontheGo
About 15 minutes by private car or taxi.
Rob13
It's maybe 10-15 miles? About a $15-25 cab ride, maybe $3 if you take the collective van. I've done both, the collective is just fine with me. Be careful of the restaurant prices right on the beach. It's highway robbery.
HonestlyApril
about a 20 min. cab ride for $20. no need to pay more, and the resort will get you a NICE cab. They will even come back and pick you up. Another day we just grabbed a cab from downtown, it wasn't as clean, no AC, and was $25!

All resort offers concerning credits are subject to change. Please call the resort directly at 52 984 875 1500 for the most up to date information on credits being offered.
BethCC
They are not 100% credits, rather it's $2000 worth of coupons you can use toward a multitude of services. Discounts instead of actual credit.
IndigoSpirit
We had the credits too. It is really a package of coupons for different services. The room upgrade is $ 400 usd if you are staying 7 days. If less, they pro-rate the amount and apply it to what ever upgrade you are wanting. The staff at check in is very helpful with this. And they do not pressure you at all to spent any more money. Some pretty good discounts, especially the spa. Really not much to spend money on. Pretty much everything is included. You are going to love this place.
Rob13
Don't bank on using the resort credits...They are worthless...They will offer you a 25% discount on an upgrade in off season.

Excursions to the Mayan Ruins can be added at the time of booking or while in destination.

Very Simple: You can book through Cheap Caribbean either on line, or once you get to the resort. DO NOT book at the airport. There are a lot of swindlers there. We met people who got burned. It is very simple once you get to the resort or on line and cost $109 per person. They pick you up on a bus at the resort, and drop you off about 10 hours later.

They will provide you with bottled water so that you don't have to worry.

As long as you drink the water in the dining halls or the bottle water provided all over the grounds you will be fine. We were advised (as a precaution) to not drink the water out of the faucets in the rooms but they provided ample bottled water.

We used the bottled water supplied by the resort but had plenty of mixed drinks with no problems!
Ecken1968
Not at all. The resort has their own system. All the water they serve is filtered. Taste as good or better than bottled. And they have bottled in every room. We had no problem at all.

Yes they are remodeling a section of the resort. I do not think they are housing anyone in that section during the renovations. Call the hotel to confirm.
IndigoSpirit
Just got back and construction started while we were there. The Caribe is under renovation. The Beach has already been renovated. Yes, you will have everything, even the pool area from the Caribe is open. If you didn't see the colorful fences hiding the construction, you would not even know the difference. Nothing to worry about.
Rob13
When I was there the renovation was ongoing, but the caribe area is somewhat is on the far south side of the resort, and did not interfere with any thing I did. I was also in the closest building to the construction zone, and I did not hear anything.
DaltonJ
Hi there! We just left the resort and experienced the construction. It didn't appear to affect anything in my opinion as the resort is big! I only noticed it when walking by to go to the gym. They have a barrier surrounding the part that is being rennovated. Nothing is closed. I wouldn't let the construction impact weather or not you go to this resort.

Jetski rental nearby??? Is April a good time for going there???5 answers
2 years, 26 months ago

There will likely be jetski rentals on the beach, which is apart from the resort. Every month is a good month to visit Mexico! it does get busy in April due to lots of people traveling around Easter.
CCGreg
Yes, you can rent jet-skis at the resort. You pay $65 USD if you are renting it for half an hour and a little over $100 USD for an hour. I was there early January 2017, and the current was too strong to the point most water activities (including jet ski) were cancelled the whole week I stayed at the resort. In addition , it kept raining almost every day and the temperatures dropped. I was told the weather is much better during the spring and summer time. So I would definitely recommend going in April as you suggested.

what meals are included in the all-inclusive?5 answers
I read something about getting so many tickets to use during your stay, I am trying to figure out what resturaunts require the tickets at this specific resort.
2 years, 25 months ago
Barcelo Maya Caribe and Beach
The buffets are the restaurants that do not require the use of the tickets. The tickets are for the specialty restaurants.
JeannieCC
All restaurants require a ticket that you obtain trough guest services.
They will give you a certain number of tickets based on the number of nights you will be spending at the resort. You will have to present those tickets at the restaurants that you will be dining at. FYI You will need t make a reservation for all restaurants before going and dress code is strictly enforced for gentlemen (shirt and pants required).
Mike85
All meals are included for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks at the buffet restaurant and snack bars. Tickets are given for "ala carte" restaurants that serve plated meals. The buffet often features these same menus on alternating nights (Japanese, Italian, etc.) along with the usual offerings, so when you get there you can decide which nights you want those particular menu items. Don't worry, you will be fed very well!
HonestlyApril
We stayed at Caribe Beach. Got 4 tickets to use in the restaurants but not the Palace ones, unless you paid $20 more pp. The Santa Fe was good but was extremely hot and were compelled to leave before dessert...and could not bring it with us. The place was like an oven.

We were there 7 nights and received tickets for 4 dinners at the sit down restaurants. Reservations were required and were hard to come by. We always ate late so not a problem for us. Is there beach service?5 answers
Is there beach service if you're on the beach hanging out or at least a bar on the beach?

Hopkinsville, KY
They offer poolside service. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
TimCC
Yes there is beach and poolside service! There are multiple beaches, pools, and pool bars! The bars are extremely close to the beach so even if you don't want to wait for service, you can hurry and grab your own!
Kokobeach
It's hit or miss on service, I typically have to head up to the snack bar or pool bar for a drink. My advice is to take a yeti or bubba cup, get a big drink at the bar and take it to the beach. Most people do this.
HonestlyApril
There is no service at the beach but the bars by the pools are fairly close.
WishIWasattheBeach
There is a bar very close to the beach and the bar is right next to or in the pool. You literally can sit in the pool and get drinks coming for free!

How does the $1000 resort credit work? What can it be used for?4 answers
2 years, 25 months ago
Gretna, Louisiana
Resort credits are normally discount coupons for spa treatments or special dinners or upgrades. If you have any further questions or need help booking, please call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
TimCC
It can only be used towards hotel services in percentages - like, 10% off room upgrades. 25% off activities, 35% off spa treatments. I'm not exactly sure about percent to service ratio, but you won't be getting anything free)
YanaV
They're more like coupons for additional services and products. Not much value to them in my opinion.
HonestlyApril
The resort credit would be more accurately described as $1000 in discount coupons.
For example, you get a 25% discount on wine at ala carte restaurants. So if you bought $4000 in wine, you would save $1000 and used up your resort credit.

The resort's website and Trip Advisor have more detailed pictures of the room. The room would come with a balcony if it was a higher floor (can place a request for this). The Oceanfront Swim Up rooms are of course all on the ground level.

Long pants, collared shirts, dresses, etc.
StevieCC
It's all over the map with people. Some get really dressed up, but I have no idea why. I wear casual dresses, much like the dress coverups you see for swimsuits. Nice sandals to go with. Men either in jeans or light pants (linen looks nice) with a collared shirt, no t-shirts, closed toe shoes required.
HonestlyApril
Men need to wear pants and no t shirts.
Mejacro
Most men wore polos and khakis. My husband and I overdressed because we weren't sure on the dress code either until we arrived. He ended up wearing black slacks with a white button up. I wore a backless, solid pastel summer dress with oxfords. I'm sure flats, heels, or nice sandals will work too!
KMS214
We went in March for 5 days and packed 1 pair of jeans and long sleeve. Swim suit, workout clothes, couple pairs of shorts, tank tops, sundresses, sunscreen, flip flops, tennis shoes and 1 pair of dress shoes. My husband also brought a pair of slacks and a nice collared shirt for the restaurants, as they are the only place for nicer dressing. HAVE FUN!

All of the food is included except for charges for room service. There are some upcharges on what they consider to be "premium" alcohol that us here in the U.S. wouldn't think of as premium. Snorkeling is free. There is a dive shop where you can pay to go diving, jet skis, parasailing, etc.

2 years, 24 months ago
Barcelo Maya Beach Caribe
All meals and drinks are included, however some dining restrictions may apply-for example, top shelf liquor or expensive meals such as surf-and-turf may come at an additional cost. As for meals, guests may enjoy dinner at the specialty restaurants using tickets, based on the length of their stay:
3 nights, 2 tickets
4-6 nights, 2 tickets
7 nights, 4 tickets

You can eat at all the Barcelo resorts except the palace unless you are staying at the palace. I highly recommend you upgrade to premium if you want room service, wifi and premium drinks. The bowling water park and miniature golf are an extra cost bit all the resorts have great water slides at the pools so I wouldn't pay to get In The water park unless you have kids that want to do the surf ride. It cost 20 dollars to get in but there is a 25% off in a brochure in your room. No cash is excepted you have to pay everything by credit card or put credit on your room and charge everything you purchase in store or for excursions to your room. We did a 500 credit and didn't go over that wAs even with our upgrade to premium that we charged.
Rjdunn
We called CheapCaribbean to book ours and ours included airfare, transportation to and from airport, and the resort.
At the resort its self, included is free access to all the buffets, bars, and most restaurants. Free mini golf, tennis, soccer, pools, volleyball, shows (only 2 stages on the resort), and several activities. The activities are located on the activities boards (3-5) around the resort and include dance lessons, dodge-ball, volleyball, drinking games and tons of other stuff for all ages. During certain times of the day, there is free scuba diving, free snorkeling, and free kayaks. I didn't even mention the tons of pools, hammocks, and beach to use.
Things that cost extra at the resort include the spa, snorkeling, scuba diving, swimming with dolphins, para-sailing, kayaking, sailing, bowling, haunted house, the mall, SurfStream, arcade, some restaurants and some offside excursions that you can book on site.
We stayed for 5 days and never left the resort cause there is so much to do. Don't forget that the alcohol is free.

Super soft sand and clear water! Perfect for snorkeling!
Misscip13
The Barcelo Caribe beach is gorgeous white sand and turquoise waters! Waves keep the shoreline pretty stirred up for snorkeling, so you'd have to go out a bit. We took the Tulum/Yalku Plus excursion (about 20 minutes from Barcelo) and snorkeled in fresh water cenotes (underwater caverns) and a lagoon. The lagoon offered much aquatic life to see and swim with. Worth the value!
Instajoy
There was a portion of the beach that was rocky(it is roped off) but for the most part it was beautiful. My husband snorkeled off the beach as there is a coral reef in front of the Caribe and we had paid and went snorkeling the day prior. He said he saw more types of fish right off of the beach and the reef than on our snorkeling adventure. I have been to Cancun several times and this was by far one of the nicest beaches I have seen.

Does the hotel offer a shuttle to/from the airport? What's the best advice on traveling from the airport to hotel?5 answers

Heather
Transportation is available, however this does come at an additional cost. It can be added at the time of booking or up until 48 hours prior to travel on an existing reservation by calling in to 800-915-2322. We recommend traveling with a reputable transportation company that can be pre-booked as the cabs may not be price-regulated.
JeannieCC
I dont know if the hotel does, but we booked through cheapcarribean and they worked out everything through Amstar
EPMomof2
We purchased a roundtrip transport right from CheapCaribbean. The cost was quite reasonable (less than $100 for the 2 of us) and the company (Amstar) was VERY organized, friendly and helpful, not to mention easy to find in the chaos outside the airport!
Instajoy
My best advice for traveling between the hotel and the airport is to book the transportation through cheap Caribbean when you book your trip.
JNell914
Book private or group transportation through cheap Caribbean, they offer it prior to check out. The company they coordinate with is fantastic and if you spring for private it's the quickest way too and from the resort which is about an hour from the airport.

We actually had a 9 of us traveling together. We had a private transportation that shuttles us to resort. No extra expense either. It was perfect!
Momx3boys
My husband and I did a shared trip rather than a private trip with and it's a big comfy charter bus. It wasn't full and we stayed at Barcelo Maya Caribe and we were the first stop.
Jleon
If you get a private car, only the people on your reservation will be using that car. I got a shared ride and we shared it with another couple going to the same hotel as us. They group you by hotel.
Doedaz
We used shared ride through cheap carib, and we had a large Van that fits about 13 people. So you can take your chance and ride the van with the thought that your party will fill it and then you don't have to stop at any other resort or I guess to be certain that you go straight to the resort nonstop is to arrange a private transportation.

Food in the Caribe/Beach side?5 answers
Hello, so I was just wondering how the food works with the all inclusive. So i am staying 7 nights and according the the website id get 4 tickets for a la carte restaurants. My question is which restaurants are those? on the website it lists so many restaurants to pick from, but from different reviews and answers i've seen that for the beach and caribe there are only two restaurants to choose from? I have also seen that you could upgrade to be able to go to all the restaurants. How much is that upgrade? and is it worth it? I am very confused, also cheap caribbean does not specify if we are staying on the beach or Caribbean side either. Will i find this out upon check in? Thanks

They have an Italian and Japanese restaurant. The buffet is actually quite good, you'll find food there: fresh fruit and salad, all kinds of meats and pasta; international cuisine. We were able to eat healthy, but could not resist the small pastries for desert :-) Our breakfast spot was quite huge, we ate outside, where it was not as noisy.

If you get 4 a la carte I don't think you need to upgrade all restaurants are available to you. you just book your time and go. They have a map to tell you where all the resturauants are at. when you get there they will direct you where to do and do all that.

I imagine that you may have your answer by now but in case anyone is interested, there are only 2 restaurants in the Beach and Caribe section of the resort but all of the other restaurants are on the property and easily walkable. I’m not sure what the upgrade is worth, I do know that on an individual basis, you can pay $20 more person for the ala carts restaurants.
FamilyOfFiveFromNJ
Your a la carte restaurants to choose from are Tokyo, Kyoto, La Trattoria, Capri, Santa Fe and Marenostrum. I may have missed one or two. To find out if you are at Beach or Caribe you can email resort and ask them. There is an excellent Facebook forum too where you can search and get all of your questions answered.

Make sure you snorkel in the beack by Palace and feed the sea turtles bananas!

You have access to almost all the restaurants at the complex. No need to upgrade. Also...if you have booked you can call the resort now and make reservations now. The buffets are great...so don't worry about food. Main buffet for breakfast, beach one for lunch, restaurant or buffet for diner, you can't go wrong. Bowling alley for 24 hour pizza, wings, chicken sandwiches and hamburgers and more.
Alarican
You do get four tickets for the “Specialty Restaurants” upon check in. Just choose the nights and times you would like to dine at those specific places and reserve your times on the first day through guest services. The rest of the food is buffet or snack bar style...and no, you don’t pay for food ever. The only additional costs with meals are bottles of wine with your Specialty Dinners. You can pay credit or charge to the room.
Also...the specialty restaurants are super nice. Dress to impress for sure!!
