Graduation Trip

We had a great time. We wanted a cheaper resort so that everyone could come enjoy a week on the beach for my graduation celebration. In our opinion, it was totally worth every penny!! The resort is smaller but since we had a group of five, we did not mind. We only went to two restaurants, which were just okay, but we still never found ourselves hungry. We liked the pool snacks the best. The beer selection was too limited so after five days of drinking Dos Equis, we walked to the store to get Corona. Also, we would have liked to watch some hockey but they did not have this at the sports bar. However, we were told they are expanding and will have a new bar with additional options for games soon. I was extremely impressed with the ability to cool the room, both during the day and at night. Due to previous Cheap Caribbean trips where I could not sleep due to being too hot, I packed a small fan and did not even need it. Finally, the staff was amazing. They made you smile and were always friendly. I would go back again!

Great place

We had an awesome experience. we missed our connecting flight there and had to spend the night in the states. Called cheap Caribbean who notified amster, who our transfers were with and they got it all switched. We arrived the next day and were greeted by bi lingual employees. The front desk and the activity guys spoke English. The other staff members didn't, which was frustrating. The food options were good. The only thing I would suggest is staying open a little later. Overall the place was beautiful. Not much to do there as the all adults side but very nice you could go to the other resort, the club, and use their stuff . I would go again and more importantly book through cheap Caribbean again.

Would return

Overall, I feel happy with our stay. We booked on Cheap Caribbean which only listed 1 room option. Upon more research, we found that there are several other room options on the Resort Website which would be nice if a few other options were listed on Cheap Caribbean site as well. The room was decent. It was awfully small. We were also given 2 twin beds instead of a queen or king bed. As a married couple, I would have much preferred a king or queen bed. We were so excited to get there and enjoy it that we didn't say anything or make a big deal out of it. The view was incredible though and we loved that aspect. We really enjoyed the activities at the resort. They day begins with Beach Volleyball for those that are interested. After that, they offer a water aerobics class. This class starts off slow but picks up with great music once the participants warm up. After that there is Bingo (winner gets a prize). They do Beer Pong in the pool or the hottub followed by pool volleyball. This was a great way to make friends and be social without having to leave the resort. Hands down, beer pong and pool volleyball were our favorite activities. We joined in on the fun every day. The Oriental restaurant was our favorite, followed by the Mediterranean restaurant. The Italian restaurant was just okay and the buffet was not good at all. The fruit was good and the french toast was good. Almost everything else we had at the buffet was not enjoyable unfortunately. In fact, for lunch, we ate at the snack bar by the pool every day instead of the buffet for this very reason. The snack bar opened at Noon and served hamburgers, tacos, nachos, hot dogs, pizza and french fries. If you're looking to head over to the Romantic Zone or El Malecon (both of which I highly recommend), you're 85 pesos away roughly and only a 15 minute drive. You're super close to the airport too which is ideal. All in all, we did a ton of research and would definitely return in the future. Our expectations would be clear that the buffet isn't the best but the views make up for it. Service was excellent. Most everyone spoke English and Spanish. Also, they have nightly entertainment across the street for the guests. We went on a Wednesday and the bar was closed unfortunately. That was a big disappointment.

Over booked and got us sick

We are a group of two couples in our early 30’s and this was our second year at Golden Crown resort in Puerto Vallarta. Our first year we had a blast; yes, the resort isn’t perfect, but it is in a gorgeous area and the price was definitely right, so much so that we invited another friend to join us, making a total of five guests this year vs four last year. Let me start by saying that overall, the staff are all extremely cordial. They are patient and they try to accommodate the best they can. They do their best to navigate any language barriers with a smile. They are always ready to serve. The view is gorgeous and the beach/pools are amazing. We spent a lot of afternoons swimming together in the ocean because the bay keeps any major waves down, and the sand is in pristine condition. They do a really good job of maintaining the grounds. The food is only ok but it suffices for buffet / all-inclusive type food. Now on to why we will likely not be returning to this resort a third time. First, we booked our stay on August 11th for a February 11th flight (5 months in advance). When we arrived at the resort, they told us that they had overbooked the Golden Crown side of the hotel. They had to put all five of us (three rooms total) in the cheaper, family-side of the hotel instead of the adults only side like we paid for. We were confused because we had booked so far in advance, how did we end up being the group that had to move? The concierge told us that the resort was going to do the following to make up for the inconvenience of being on the family-friendly side; 1. Upgrade our rooms to honeymoon suites 2. Free lobster dinners, at our request 3. A bottle of wine per room, at our request 4. Free massages for each guest, at our request We weren’t thrilled to be put over in the family side of the resort but there was really nothing we could do about it. We just took a four hour flight here after all, so we had them take us to our rooms. We had originally requested our rooms be close to each other; instead, we were on opposite sides of the resort, which was annoying but still, at this point, not deal breaking. All things considered, we were in paradise and weren’t going to let these setbacks get to us. Plus, free lobster and wine, right? I will mention that every night of the stay, we could hear children yelling, running up and down the halls, etc. which is not the experience we thought we were paying for. Also, there is construction going on next door, so waking up to the sweet sound of the ocean and jackhammers in the morning sort ruined the mood. After spending the rest of the initial day on the beach, we went our separate ways and my girlfriend and I went to our room. We were going to use the in-room honeymoon suite jacuzzi, but the water was broken. It was trickling out of the spout so slow it took over and hour to fill the tub. We decided to shower instead, but the water was cold and never warmed up, even after running it for over five minutes. We both took cold showers. The flusher on our toilet was broken; the handle kept popping out every time we tried to flush it. I called the front desk on three separate occasions (on different days) about these issues; every time they said they would send someone up to look at it, every time no one came while we waited. Neither the Jacuzzi nor the toilet handle were fixed for our 5 night stay. Throughout the trip, the other couple kept having their room keys deactivated. They had to get new room keys several times. Each time they would put the key in a different spot; not next to phones, not in wallets, etc., but the problem kept happening. All parties had issues getting services because our rooms were on the family side, while our wristbands were for the adult only side. When trying to get help at the front desk, the staff said they couldn’t help us because we belonged at the other hotel. When we went to the other hotel’s front desk, they were confused because we were wearing the wrong wristbands. Same issue with trying to get towels; one towel booth said we had to go to the other for towels because of our hotel room, and the other said we had to go to the previous booth because of the color of the towel cards. Trying to explain the situation, that the hotel was over booked and we were moved, made the situation even more confusing. This happened every single time we tried to use the services. One of us was questioned at one of the bars because the bartender did not believe we were staying at the hotel, because our room number and wristband didn’t match. When we tried to book our lobster dinners, the manager on duty told us the food and wine would be at one of our selected hotel rooms so we could all have dinner together at 8pm. We waited in the room until the food and drinks were a half hour late, when we finally called the front desk and they had no idea what we were talking about. We explained what the previous manager (at Golden crown) had promised. The manager on the family side said they would look into it and call us back, and never did. Now the food is over an hour late. We call again, and finally get them to agree to send us the meals. About 45 minutes later the meals show up, but there are only four meals not five, when we were promised five meals total. One of us had to share. The lobster was large but the quality was par at best. Because of the lack of food, we ordered a few cheeseburgers, which were possibly the worst quality burgers we ever had. I have to guess they were left over from the afternoon grill station by the pool. The very next day, I got violently ill. While I cannot be certain if it was the lobster meal, or from ingesting bad water at some point (I only drank bottled water, but I suppose it is possible), or of no fault of the resort that gave me traveler’s diarrhea, in the upcoming days four out of five of us would be sick to some degree. We also tried to contact the same Golden Crown manager that had made us all the promises, and let her know about being shorted a meal, and how much we got the run-around trying to receive it. At first we were told she was in a meeting, then we were told she was gone for the day. We left a phone number for her to call us back but she never did. We decided, based on what we had been through so far, that it wasn’t worth the effort to even try and book the massages we were offered. When we returned home, one of us had to be hospitalized, quarantined, and was diagnosed with a traveler’s parasite. Again, it’s hard to know what exactly caused it, but we didn’t venture from the resort for the last three days of our trip, which is pretty strong circumstantial evidence that it had to do with either the meal or something else provided at the resort itself. Again, I want to emphasize that the staff (with the exception of management) were great. I will say, I think there are generally a lot of communication issues that need to be resolved between the staff that would take a lot of headache out of the guest’s experience, but overall everyone did their best to try and understand our situation. Of course, we still had a blast in each other's company, hanging out on the beach, etc. Needless to say, we were pretty disappointed with the resort this year. It was strange what a stark contrast it was between last year and this year, as we didn't have any issues like this before. I'd like to think this trip was an anomaly, and that someday we might want to return if we knew we would get what we paid for. Screaming children, poor service, empty promises, confusion, and Montezuma's revenge was certainly not what we were expecting.
