Enjoyed the brand new hotel

Had a good time at the Riu. The staff still needs to get trained up on some elements of the property but most everyone we encountered had a great attitude and really worked to make the stay enjoyable.

Average Experience

The resort itself was beautiful and the layout was great. The pools were the place to be during our visit- clean and good service at the pool bars. Our room was only cleaned twice during our 6 day period, which we weren't entirely thrilled about. There was also sub par entertainment throughout the days/nights there. Only really 1 area or bar to hangout past 5 or 6 pm. However, our biggest complaint would be the service at the restaurants for dinner. There is about 4 to pick from (only a few are open each night as a rotation). They do not do reservations which we thought was going to be great, but it ended up being a nightmare. We showed up at 7pm, was told it was an hour wait. We took the buzzer and hung out at the bar. An hour and a half later we still were not called, so we went back in. The restaurant was basically empty and we were seated right away then-- someone apparently forgot to buzz us. After that, we ordered food and waited another hour and a half and still did not get our food. We decided to leave. This exact scenario happened 2 nights later at a different restaurant at the resort. Long story short, we ended up ordering room service 3 nights in a row (which there is only 4 meals to chose from). Each time we ordered room service, it came quickly but was never brought with everything we asked for. Besides the cleanliness of the room and the pools/weather, we were ecstatic to leave and come home as we were ready to eat a real meal.

Brand New Hotel

To be able to relax eat from 3 different restaurants, swim in 4 different pools and not have the noise from Kids made my vacation amazing. The fact that if I wanted entertainment which was the only thing they lacked was as easy as walking to RIU palace next door was a great compromise

Still some kinks to work out, but worth the trip

Me, my DH and DD went to this the Riu Palace Baja California from 12/26/18 to 1/01/19. Below is our review. Note that we have a good time wherever we go, and are not particularly fussy. But, I've tried to note thins that I know are meaningful to others when they plan a trip. Check-in: We arrived at 2:30 pm, and our rooms were not ready; however, by the time we were finished checking in, they were both done. We were greeted right from the get go by smiling, friendly and helpful staff, and were given a choice of cocktail (cerveza, champagne, or fruit juice). Check in was a breeze; we were told the resort was about 50% occupied, but it felt more like 30%. The lobby was spotless, new and sparkling. My usual preferred style is less contemporary and more traditional, but this resort really grew on me over our stay. (Plus, we visited the Riu Santa Fe and Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas sister resorts, and were really happy we had changed our reservation to come to Baja California - the others looked dated and worn, with old ripped furniture in both lobbies). This is also a smaller resort than the other two. Rooms: We were assisted with our luggage to our rooms, which were beautiful - brand new, oceanfront - this is the way to go here, as the view is BREATHTAKING. I booked through Cheap Caribbean, and the cost to move from an ocean view room at Riu Palace CSL to an ocean front room here was only $100 total for 4 people in two rooms. Crazy, and completely worth it. This Riu also has the new tub-in-room style, please look at the photos to see if that is ok by you. We've gone to a lot of Rius, so we're used to it. Everything is new, contemporary, with very clean and upscale lines. And, the locations of our rooms (2232 and 2233) were very quiet. We didn't have any of the shower drainage issues that others have identified - the shower is great, rainshower head and handheld showerhead as well, with two sinks, king bed, and flat screen TV with many channels, including a number in English. Fridge was stocked with soda, water, and Dos Equis, plus there were the obligatory bottles of booze above the bar area (vodka, tequila, gin, and rum; alas, no whiskey). We had a beautiful ornate towel sculpture on check in (we were celebrating our anniversary), but no towel sculptures for either room the rest of the trip. Also, no turn down service as advertised, but we're okay with that. Room cleaning was prompt and thorough. Food: We spent most of our time at the buffet and were very satisfied. This was our first adults only resort, and found that there was a greater variety of healthier food choices - including tons of different kinds of ceviche, which we love -- along with some comfort food if that is your thing. Desserts were what we usually find in all-inclusives - beautiful, but not particularly tasty. We also attended the Asian and French specialty restaurants - two thumbs up for Krystal, only one for the Asian (don't have the duck ramen - the duck was great, but the ramen not so much). Service in all restaurants was good to great - the buffets in particular. We are good tippers, as we know the hotel staff work so hard for low wages. In particular, Arturo and Diego in the buffet were phenomenal - Diego always looked for us and took great care of us. Decent bar rail booze was available for cocktails, but really nothing above basic bar rail you see in the US - to get anything a little better, you needed to go to the lobby bar (which is actually overlooking the water). Pools/Beachfront: The view is amazing. There is one large infinity pool that I could really spend the rest of my life in - the temperature was perfect, and it overlooks the beach and oceanfront with the arch and a view of Cabo. Pool service was very good (thanks Gustavo!). There are also three other pools: one activity pool behind the infinity pool, and two pools with swim-up bars. the one at the back didn't have much of a view, but the water was much warmer (... too warm for me...). The other was right next to the infinity pool and was much cooler, but sitting on a bar stool with the sun on my back = perfecto. The bar staff were also great - friendly and chatty. We noticed an influx of people mid-week, yet there were always plenty of loungers and tables. If you want shade, you can sit by an umbrella (mesh, but just enough shade to cut the sun), or there were loungers underneath retractable sun shades. As the resort is new, the beachfront loungers have little shade, as the palm trees haven;t grown enough yet to provide it. The view from the pools was so nice, we didn't feel the need to lounge on the beach, but did go walking. The beach is not swimmable, but if you like you can walk abotu 100 yards north and get to a swimmable area. The vendors can be pretty aggressive, but there were fewer in our area than down the beach by the other two resorts. All three resorts have a snack bar by the pool, so there is no beach lunch set up each day - if that is your thing, none of these resorts are for you. But, the snack bar at the Baja California was ribs, chicken, chips and guacamole, and salad stuff - good for a little bite between meals. The entertainment team worked hard to try to engage people in activities, but also weren't pesty if you say you are not interested. Several trivia games at the pool got a lot of participation, and were a lot of fun. Music by the pool was interesting: the first couple of days, the playlist was older (mid 70s-mid 80s pop), and wasn't really what we were expecting. Later in the week, they seemed to dial it in more to a mix of contemporary pop and Latinx music, which was much more satisfying and fit the clientele and setting. Shows: this resort does not have a big show every night, but does have live music. Every other night, the music stops in time for the pool party hosted by the Riu Santa Fe next door, which looked like fun but was not our cup of tea for this trip. On the other nights, the resort hosted a show - we saw the Three Tenors show, which had two really solid tenors, and one jsut okay guy - but, it was entertaining. It seems like the resort is still trying to find its niche - my DH and I are in our mid 50s, but still felt as if they were trying to cater to our parents, entertainment-wise. The theater is outdoor, so it gets a bit cool outside - there are tower hearters, but not enough of them if it is really cool, which it was on New Year's Eve (see below). The view from the upper bar overlooks the ocean, breathtaking... New Year's Eve: the specialty restaurants were closed, and the buffet was stocked with seafood (lobster, crab, shrimp, mussels, scallops, and various fish) and carving stations (jamon, prime rib, pork), as well as a number of other options. The game on desserts was raised (very good and beautiful), and there were many gorgeous ice and fresh fruit sculptures. The evening was quite cool, so we lrft the show after a while to warm up, and didn't go back but stayed in our rooms to watch the fireworks of Cabo at midnight, which were really beautiful - it was a very nice show. Checkout: uneventful. We were granted a late checkout for one room (1 pm), so we were able to max out our pool time on our last day. There is a courtesy room in the lobby that can be used if you need to check out earlier than you wish to leave; you can change clothes in there, and it is very nice. There is also a 24 hour lounge that was just ok, but would do in a pinch if you need food before you leave. We had time after check out to go to the buffet one last time before our shuttle picked us up and took us back to the airport. We used a private shuttle from Amstar, which treated us well (again). the airport is only 1/2 hour from the resort, so no need to fear driving for along time between the airport and resort. A couple of additional notes: the maintenance of the resort is immaculate. The resort is about 10 minutes from downtown Cabo, and taxis are readily available and reasonable - and, most of them are vans, so can accommodate a lot of people. Cabo has many restaurants, but also caters to Americans - be careful in getting recommendations for restaurants. We wasted one meal on a very Americanized restaurant, but we were unable to extract ourselves in time to go elsewhere. :( Also, tips go a long way - we noticed that there were a lot of people who did not tip at this resort, which makes me sad. The resort caters mostly to Americans and Canadians. We did not try the spa, but the services looked extensive. The gym also looked great, but we weren't there to exercise and cost seemed comparable to other all-inclusives. And, did I mention the view? Oceanfront was totally worth the cost here. The locals call this resort the nuevo Riu blanca (new white Riu), and it definitely stands out. But it was a very worthwhile trip, and we will likely visit again.
