Disappointed with my Birthday trip

The room had all sorts of crawling and flying bugs of all sizes and spiders bigger than I care to see. I requested the room be sprayed multiple times and was lied to and told it had been done when it hadn't. The buffet lacked variety and the location for the dinner buffet was changed almost daily without notice. Some guests received daily notice of the events of the day, but they were never provided to me. I expected more from Secrets than I received.

Secrets Cozumel

Overall a great vacation spot Secrets food was just okay nothing special, had to go to the sister resort to get the better food. When we got home noticed missing pair of Running shoes, shorts, infinite bike shirt so was wondering if the maid service picked them up by mistake. these items was my wife's equipment that she raced the Ironman with so were dirty and don't know why anyone would take them. Swimming pool was ok also but the beach was great and had fun snorkeling after my wife's Ironman.

Destination Wedding

I planned a destination wedding to Cozumel, Mexico and landed on booking with Secrets Aura. It drew me in because of the pictures and the fact that it was adults only. Along with that it gave full access to its sister resort next door, Sunscape. When we arrived, we were greeted with cold towels to wipe our faces and champagne. The check-in process was smooth and quick and the bell hops helped us bring our bags to the room. I was starting to notice that the resort didn’t look as nice as what the pictures made it seem. When I arrived at the room I was honestly disappointed. It was okay for a hotel but for a Secrets Resort I expected more. It just was old and it felt dirty. We noticed mold on the curtains when we looked outside. We also noticed that some balconies had hammocks but ours didn’t. I woke up at 2:00 a.m. to use the bathroom and I stepped in freezing cold water. It was everywhere! Our whole bathroom had flooded. It did storm that night so that’s what we chalked it up to. The whole resort felt old. I didn’t know before but Secrets acquired the property just 5 years prior and they were working on remolding it. If that had been on their website I would not have booked my wedding there. However, nothing was said about a remodel or that the hotel wasn’t to Secret’s standards yet. The hotel manager Ulises was incredible. When we went to discuss the room flooding he assured us that we would get moved to a much cleaner and newly remolded room that would match my expectations. He conveyed his hopes and dreams of the resort when its remodel is finished. I could tell he was passionate about helping his employees and guests. We couldn’t even be mad, his demeanor clamed us down and his eye contact helped us feel like he was really listening. My family wasn’t all able to book at Secrets but did get rooms at Sunscape and they were all put on a waiting list to be moved over the Secrets if spots opened and by pure luck spots did open! It was very nice to have all my family at one resort. Get the ocean front room. When we switched rooms the room we switched to was Ocean Front and was newly remodeled. It was a world of difference. Worth the move. It had a huge tub, I was so excited to take a bath but the water never got hot and even when maintenance came to fix it, it still didn’t get hot. Our shower water was hot, so I’m still puzzled on that. The view was to die for. I’d say the room was about 20 feet from the ocean. Preferred vs. non-preferred. When you get a room in Secret’s preferred section, you get special benefits. Our first room wasn’t in that section but our second room was so we got to see how both sides lived. Being preferred you get share a pool and pool bar with only preferred guests as well as more comfy lounge chairs on the beach. Preferred guests also get their own separate lounge room with a bar and snacks as well as a private check-in and out experience. You know you’re preferred if you room key is black. My husband and I first thought we were because we had a banner on our door saying we were VIP. This was just a little something that came with having the wedding there, it was just coupons for the spa, nothing crazy and it didn’t mean we were preferred. When we did become preferred we didn’t even use that pool because we wanted to be with our family. The only great thing about being preferred in my opinion was the room location right on the beach. Restaurants and no reservations. I hated the fact that this resort didn’t offer any form of reserving spots for dinner. It was first come, first serve and if you weren’t the first there, you’d have to wait at least an hour for a spot, and forget about getting a space if you have a big group like we did. When we have stayed at other resorts I took for granted the reservations and not having to worry about getting a spot for dinner. The food was typically served in small portions so my husband ordered a couple entrees at a time. Mostly, the food was good, I didn’t eat anything that I hated. I do wish that there was a hibachi steak house. That’s always fun and tasty. Restaurants at Secrets that we ate The Market Café – Usually a Buffett but one night they did close that to serve tapas, the other night to do grilling on the beach, and another night to do a fiesta on the beach. This is the spot where we would get breakfast and sometimes lunch. I enjoyed their pancakes and my husband like their omelets, even though you had to stand and wait for it. The Bordeaux – French The first time we ate here I got the Filet and it was to die for, however the veggies that came with it were cold, not sure if it was supposed to be like that. The steak was very small and I would have enjoyed some more. The second time we ate their we got their around 7:00 and there was no sitting available so we waited for over an hour. It wasn’t worth it because when my aunts and I got our steaks they were barely even cooked, still cold and raw inside. Windows – We had our wedding reception dinner here and we had the whole room to ourselves. The food was so yummy. Most of us ordered the Spaghetti with Parmesan Chicken. Da Mario – Italian I got the pasta with red sauce and was disappointed in how runny the sauce was. My husband got the penne with olive oil and butter sauce and to be honest I would have rather ate that. Coco Café –The 24-hour spot to get Ice Cream (it was so yummy), Coffee, Tea, or Hot Chocolate. Restaurants at Sunscape that we ate Sunnyside Grill – A good place to get a burger and potato wedges, service was typically quick. The activity staff was a blast, if you are lucky to have someone named Leo or Arby then you are sure to have a great time! My favorite part was water volleyball. It was a great way to meet other people at the resort and interact. We also did bingo (they need new bingo cards though) and a little target practice with an airsoft gun (didn’t enjoy that because the target was so tiny!) The spa was the best thing on the properties. We got a couple’s hot stone massage and I had Joy and let me tell you, best massage I’ve ever had! With the massage you get to spend an hour before in their Hydro Therapy Pool. This included time in the hot sauna, wet sauna, shower, then the hydro pool. The hydro pool was something I’ve never seen before but it helped warm up our muscles before our massage. It consisted of a hot a very cold side that you would walk on those black stones they massage you with. Then you would move into another section where there were different pressure stations of water that you would stand under. Then you would lay on some and my favorite was the one that had jets on my legs! If you don’t want to get a massage and just do they hydro pool, you can! It was so relaxing just spending time in the spa and hearing the relaxing music. After the hydro pool and before your massage they put you on these beds in a dark room with relaxing music for about 10 minutes. I was in my Zen zone, let me tell you. After the massage they hydrate you and have you sit for a little bit. Getting a massage at this resort is expensive but mine was well worth the money! The wedding was beautiful, it was on the pier, we did the simple package with no flowers or anything because I thought the ocean’s beauty was more than enough and it was. Patti was my wedding planner and from the moment we started communicating almost a year prior to the wedding, she was great! Her English was outstanding and she knows her job well. She even left me a handwritten note when we checked in welcoming us. We had Adventure Photos do the photography and videography and we don’t have the video back but the pictures turned out great! I do wish we had more of just Michael and me. If you do a destination wedding, make a list or have examples of photographs you’d like and show that to your photographer. The photographer was so lovely though, he name is Felipe and he went in the water at one point to get a great shot! He was fun and respectful. I think at one point in getting ready my aunts were all in towels and he didn’t flinch, he just went on as business as usual to get shots of me getting ready. I don’t like buttercream frosting and I didn’t know Patti knew that and she hand whipped me frosting for the wedding cake! I didn’t realize we were getting a cake table at the restaurant but there it was with a beautiful pink rose table cloth. The wedding was everything I imagined and more!

What's to Love

Newly renovated in 2015-2016, this resort is all shiny, splashy new.

As of June 2018 you can bring your furry friend along!

The salvation of the cool towel and thirst-quenching welcome cocktail when arriving in paradise.

The sleek white, boxy architecture (very glam).

Hip suites with comfy beds that have private balconies or terraces and take-your-breath-away views.

Scuba diving at the epic Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and being awed by the fabled coral reefs.

You can take scuba lessons at the Dive House. Sweet.

The candlelight dinner for two on the beach while the purr of the waves serenades you.

Secrets box for private room service delivery - you don't ever have to see a human if you don't want to.

Snorkeling under the dock that boasts stingrays and parrot fish. (One beach lover even saw a barracuda).

The world-class spa with Seaweed Wraps, invigorating hydrotherapy and exotic indigenous treatments. Swoon.

A pier to wander out on and get hypnotized by the point where the blue water meets the azure horizon.

What We'd Change

Cozumel doesn't have as many activities as Cancun. After all, it is an island. But Secrets always has a lot of adult-only activities to keep you entertained.

Why You Should Go

You're just 20 minutes away from the airport so your rockin' vacay will start before you know it.

You're just 15 minutes away from downtown Cozumel. Just a $15 (U.S. dollars) to cab it there.

You can upgrade to Preferred Club which means better rooms, private swimming pool, and much more.

The mysteriously cool Chicen Itza and Coba Ruins are a short hop away. (Ooo-ahhh).

Lit tennis courts. Woot!

You can improve your game on an 18-hole golf course designed by the great Jack Nicklaus.

The largest beachfront in Cozumel is out back.

You can try you hand at kayaking, Hobie cats and water volleyball - don't be shy. Dive in!

Bring your aqua shoes - the beach is like finely ground seashells.

Most restaurants require men to wear long pants and no flip flops.

Probably no going shirtless or tank tops, unless you're a male Abercrombie model.
