Outstanding!!!

Beautiful resort! Delicious food with great presentation. Many options for food and activities right on the resort. If you didn’t feel like going out, room service was good, as well, fast and still hot. Service was exceptional!!!!! Not only drinks, but food as well, delivered to your lounge chairs, beach and poolside. A New Years Eve Party and food spread on the beach unlike anything we have never seen before!!! They began preparing and setting up 3 days in advance. Seriously, from lights draped from the palm trees, gold and black decorations and party favors, and an enormous, professionally painted New Years sign with a real life golden angel for picture taking. Champagne, balloons, golden glitter vases... a golden arch, band and dance floor set up one the beach... pools were decorated with lighting strips and floating golden Christmas bulbs...plentiful tables of food prepared and set up by obviously seasoned professionals!!!! Breads, salads, potatoes, pastas, sushi, appetizers, seafood (any way you can imagine it) fish, shrimp, muscles, clams, crab, oysters and grilled lobster....prime rib beef and pork sliced from the roast or grilled. Finally, a table of fine never ending desserts!!!! We went back twice and are sure we only seen half of what they had to offer! Thank you all for an exceptionally excellent, memorable New Years Eve party and 2017-2018, 2 week stay in paradise! We appreciate the opportunity to enjoy Your Island! You are all outstanding hosts! We would definitely recommend your resort, especially during a Holiday or Special Event!!! They know how to make it Special!!!!

Get what you pay for

The views and beach are wonderful. The staff are great. But the resort is worn and needs a remodel. Little or no hot water, food choices limited, buffet not stocked well and cold. I will not return.

Great snorkeling

Snorkeling: My husband snorkeled right off the beach every day of our visit. We also took one of the reasonably priced tours offered at the dive shack on site. Off the beach, he saw an eagle ray and baby, sting rays, barracuda, and a plethora of tropical fish. On our tour, we also saw a sea turtle! Pools: We visited during an unusual cold snap, and all of the pools were too cold to enter. They were clean and well cared for. Beach: As other reviews will indicate, this is not the pristine white beach that postcards are made of. What makes this awesome for snorkeling makes this beach not really friendly to bare feet. Invest in some good water shoes. Food: Meh. We ate a few times at the sister resort--also Meh. Often the food is served cold. The servers are all friendly and professional. Room service is included in your plan, which is really nice. The food is still just OK. You can always rely on fresh fruit and a spectacular selection of breads in the Market Cafe (buffet). Room: We upgraded to a Preferred Junior Suite (new at Christmas 2017) because we wanted a little more space. The room was very nice and quite comfortable. Housekeeping was really efficient. When we arrived, though, our comforter smelled of cigarette smoke, which absolutely disgusted me. The housekeeper happily replaced it with a fresh one. When we arrived, the room smelled musty, almost like mildew. We kept the balcony door open most of the time. The room was very clean, and I saw no sign of mold or mildew anywhere. The water pressure in the shower is laughable. Service: For the most part, service was good. Nothing spectacular or noteworthy--neither good nor bad. The layout of the resort is really weird. Because of the swim-up pools, there is no direct route to anywhere. You have to go out and around to get to places. Thoughts on Preferred: We paid for preferred because we wanted a bigger room. I did not see much difference in the Preferred areas versus the not preferred areas. They have made so many of their rooms Preferred that one day we went to the NOT preferred pool because it was less crowded. The beach and pool chairs were a little more comfortable in the Preferred area, but it wasn't significant. There is one more bar for Preferred, but we didn't even visit it. Not sure it was a value. Bars: There are plenty of places to get a cold drink. Of course they are not using a lot of top shelf liquor, but the drinks are plentiful, the service is friendly, and the daiquiris are excellent. Activities: We did not participate in the activities offered at the resort. They didn't really offer a whole that interested us. This resort does not have a building or bar for their "shows" or performances. Everything offered is low key, low budget, and pretty unimpressive overall. However, after a full day of sun, drinking, snorkeling, etc, we were too tired to do much else anyway. Would I go back? Oh yeah!

Not for us

I guess we all work off our own experiences and expectations, so first timers may find this place charming and adventurous. I found it at the bottom of the resort heap. Secrets commercials are selling an illusion and after you pay so much and get there you really want to vacation in that illusion. I tried hard, but could not. I’ll use a 10 point scale. DIVING 6 dives a 7, 1 dive a 9. Safety awareness 7. Protection of the reef 2. Several divers took items from reef, multiple fin damage. Boats small, clean, one broke down and was replaced. Once there, no dive packages offered, had to buy individually. Used Dive House, they have a hut at Secrets. Dive Palancar is available a few steps down the beach. You must bring your gear each dive, no storage available. No extra help offered on boat, standard fare. PROPERTY Secrets 4 (no children)is a 20 minute $15 taxi drive from downtown or the airport. It is adjacent to sunscape Sabor 5 (children) resort. It can be used as one resort, no physical separation, everyone can use all restaraunts and activities. Secrets is an older property needing repairs and major update. The beach and pools 8 are nice, restaraunts 2 with bars 3 are there. Most of the time waitstaff 8 do roam and take orders. Landscape 7 is well maintained but not spectacular. The property is fenced and gated with security guard. They have a nice dock, closed sometimes, no fishing, no chairs. ROOMS At checkin we decided to upgrade from swim up jr suite 3 to ocean view swim up jr suite 4. The first room was small with porch that was only big enough for a petite hammock, there was a very small swim through lane which made the room qualify as swim up. The view 2 was the tables in the Restaurant. Second room was larger, swim lane larger, could see ocean through the palm trees and pool. Fixtures in poor shape but worked, lots of corrosion, damaged surfaces of furniture, stained drapes, etc. did have a nice patio with outside bed 8. Very close to hot tub, heard every conversation, plus guests in swin lane 2 feet from room. Room service is free, food bad, takes 45 to 90 minuets per delivery. Air conditioner broke took 2 days and several visits to fix, was told several different stories. Took 2 hours to get hair dryer. FOOD I understand the challenge of being on an island, but Cozumel has access to wonderful food, they have MEGA stores like super Walmart’s and the prices are reasonable by US standards. This availability does not translate to the restaurants at secrets or sabor. The plates look good, but portions are small and lack flavor. You basically see the same small set of ingredients used in different ways. All of the food seems to come from one kitchen, modifications are not accepted. Eg, change chicken on Cobb salad to shrimp. Instead I would order shrimp cocktail and salad and do it myself. I would suggest bringing your own spices. The guacamole and pico de gallo were good though lacking chopped jalapeño. The morning buffet was fine. We tried all the restaraunts. DRINKS Yes they are free, yes it looks like brand name bottles. No, they are not. I brought home 2 samples, and may have them tested because the alcohol content was sketchy (as in high). But then after drinking a few who really cares. I suggest trying several until one works for you. We went to Mega and bought our own. CHECKINOUT Both were smooth. Don’t get too excited about the resort dollars or coupons. You have to sit through a 3-4 hr sales pitch for the coupons to work, We didn’t. The resort dollars are only good at the spa, just so much per treatment per day and the starting prices are exorbitantly high. FREE ACTIVITIES Each day several are planned. Water aerobics, volleyball, bingo. Etc. Dancers, singers, fire show, etc at night. The staff worked hard on the daytime activities, they deserve recognition for trying to gather people and get them to have fun. Some of the evening activities were entertaining. The performers certainly worked hard... tough job. PAYED ACTIVITIES We only did 3. Diving described above. We booked the romantic dinner on the dock. $300+. Pretty table, appetizers ok, steak and lobster entree were great, cooked right and flavorful. Very old blue tooth speaker for music. Want to take and sell pictures. They write your name in sand with flower petals and create a path on the beach to the dock, very nice. They also put candles and petals in your room. The last day we did the sunset cruise.$51 each, It was primarily for snorkelors, boat was clean, staff attentive. Drinks free but awful. Sunset was pretty. They put up a non functioning sail for 30 minutes, good for pictures. They also pull the old trick... I see a snorkelor left behind on the way home. It turns out to be a coconut with husk streamer. Makes a good story back home. TAXIS/TRANSPORTATION When you arrive the only option is to take the shuttle van, taxis are not allowed in the airport grounds. You can walk 200 feet to the gate and catch a cab, $15 for 2 people and luggage to Secrets or stay inside and wait until the van is full, endured multiple stops and pay $40 for 2 people. When departing insist on a local taxi, they can drop you at the airport. Taxi fare is regulated and posted at the Sabor lobby, the bellman can translate the locations or Siri can. I don’t mind paying 30% more than posted, they need the money, but sometimes you will be asked for 200% more.

What's to Love

Newly renovated in 2015-2016, this resort is all shiny, splashy new.

The salvation of the cool towel and thirst-quenching welcome cocktail when arriving in paradise.

The sleek white, boxy architecture (very glam).

Hip suites with comfy beds that have private balconies or terraces and take-your-breath-away views.

Scuba diving at the epic Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and being awed by the fabled coral reefs.

You can take scuba lessons at the Dive House. Sweet.

The candlelight dinner for two on the beach while the purr of the waves serenades you.

Secrets box for private room service delivery - you don't ever have to see a human if you don't want to.

Snorkeling under the dock that boasts stingrays and parrot fish. (One beach lover even saw a barracuda).

The world-class spa with Seaweed Wraps, invigorating hydrotherapy and exotic indigenous treatments. Swoon.

A pier to wander out on and get hypnotized by the point where the blue water meets the azure horizon.

What We'd Change

Cozumel doesn't have as many activities as Cancun. After all, it is an island. But Secrets always has a lot of adult-only activities to keep you entertained.

Why You Should Go

You're just 20 minutes away from the airport so your rockin' vacay will start before you know it.

You're just 15 minutes away from downtown Cozumel. Just a $15 (U.S. dollars) to cab it there.

You can upgrade to Preferred Club which means better rooms, private swimming pool, and much more.

The mysteriously cool Chicen Itza and Coba Ruins are a short hop away. (Ooo-ahhh).

Lit tennis courts. Woot!

You can improve your game on an 18-hole golf course designed by the great Jack Nicklaus.

The largest beachfront in Cozumel is out back.

You can try you hand at kayaking, Hobie cats and water volleyball - don't be shy. Dive in!

Bring your aqua shoes - the beach is like finely ground seashells.

Most restaurants require men to wear long pants and no flip flops.

Probably no going shirtless or tank tops, unless you're a male Abercrombie model.
