Love this resort
We come every year for the past 4 years...we love the ruins palace Los Americas
This was an absolutely perfect vacation / honeymoon.
Cheap Caribbean was easy to use for booking and the resort, Riu Palace Americas was absolute heaven.
We were at the Riu Palace from 11/9//20190 to 11/14/2019. We had a great time. The staff is AMAZING. The pool adult pool area was a lot of fun and well some interesting things were going on. The staff tries to keep the party atmosphere alive and fun.
The food was ok. It is all-inclusive food. But I also know that I am a bit of a food snob so...there is that.
I didn't give the resort 5 Palms because of the bed and pillow situation. We requested a king bed. It was literally two bigger than twin but smaller than full-sized beds pushed together. Each bed was made so individually so it was two individual beds. The pillows. Oh my. Flatter than pancakes - if you stay here, pack your own pillow!
While the above is negative, I would definitely stay here again. The resort is spotless, the staff was fantastic and the pools, etc were amazing!

What is the dress requirement for dining?8 answers
Can dress shorts and sport shirts be worn in the dining facilities??
I really don't want to have to dress up in a tropical climate!
7 years, 89 months ago
Redding California
The Riu Palace Las Americas does require a dress code for dining in the a la carte restaurants. Gentleman may wear long pants, closed toe shoes and dress shirts. Ladies may wear dress pants or dresses and dress sandals.
MellissaCC
shorts and sports shirts are just fine. Although you see guests dressed for dinner dates but again you are on vacation and shorts and sports shirts is just fine.
photo818
they do not have dress code
valeria
NO shorts are allowed for men, so my husband wore linen pants or comfy khakis. A shirt with sleeves is also required, but it can be short sleeves. I never saw anyone being asked to change or leave based on their clothing though
lovesuntravel
Need long pants for men in the four restaurants that require reservations, jeans are ok. Women are asked to dress nicely.
spgolf
Women can wear anything, men must wear long pants (jeans are acceptable).
jc36
Slacks and sleeves (no cut-offs). I wore shorts one night and never got any slack, I think the shirt is the big deal, wore a polo every night for the "fancy" dinners.
Echo
They advertise a dress code however dress code in buffet can be swim clothes. Now at the other restaurants they ask for slacks. NOT ME! I wore like caro shorts and a t shirt every night and not a word was said.

According to the resort's page, it only states that the nightclub, Disco Pacha, at Riu is included with the all inclusive package. We do suggest contacting the resort directly for the most accurate information. The email address for the resort found directly on their website is palace.lasamericas@riu.com.
MariaCC
Yes you can. Our stay was only a few days, so we tried all the restaurants in our hotel, which didn't leave us any days to go to the other ones, however.
lovesuntravel
You can eat at the buffet restaurants and drink at their bars/cafes. But we tried to make reservations at the "other" hotel and they wouldn't let us. They confirm with your room number and last name.

Yes, there is a small reef on the right. Directly out front you can see some fish but you will have better luck to the right of the hotel. This is not prime snorkeling but fun to try for novices.

AlixCC
Yes

I can't tell if there were adjoining rooms, but I can tell you your room will have another one sharing a same small hallway off of the main hallway. I'm referring to the jr suites. I remember thinking that would be neat if family could stay in the room adjacent to ours.
The adjacent rooms are so close you can touch both doors at the same time.
LTBEE
yes they do we had adjoining rooms last year but you should request it ahead of time

The adjoining rooms look like they are not ocean front. Only street view. We got 2 rooms (not adjoining) be ause we have 3 teenage children. This worked very well.

We stayed with our adult kids. The rooms don't connect directly but they do share a small hallway separate from the floor's main hallway. At times we left the doors propped open so we could go back and forth easily.

Are you limited to the number of times you can eat at the a la carte restaurants?6 answers
I'v read that some "all inclusive" resorts only give you a limit number of reservations at their a la carte restaurants. ( 4 nights = 1 a la carte reservation). Does RPLA do this or are you allowed to make as many reservations as you like?
6 years, 73 months ago
Adam
Adam,
Each day make reservation for the next night's dinner. If you don't get into the one you want, it's okay, just go early and ask to be put on the list. You will wait like 15 minutes and someone will not show up and you can take their reservation. It always works out. However you can eat at the al la carte buffets restaurants as many times a day as you like! There is no limit in any way.
Travelbug13
The ala carte restaurants do require reservations, and our website advises some dining restrictions may apply. For more information please contact the resort directly at www.riu.com.
LisaCC
You don't need reservations for the breakfast, lunch, snack, or dinner buffets or for the Italian restaurant that serves dinner. You do need dinner reservations for the other restaurants, which you must make by 3 or 4pm the day prior to your reservations, and you do that by going to customer service in the resort lobby. I don't think there is a limited number of reservations you can make during your trip; however, we only made reservations for one night while we were there.
RachG12
I'm not positive on this but I think as many as your stay. We went to 4 and were there for only 6 nights. We didn't have any trouble making reservations either
Brendan626
We had a 5 night stay, and visited 4 of the a la carte resturants, so no RPLA does not do this.
Jake159
My daughter is a vegetarian and I am not. We went to the steak place for dinner where she snacked on veggies, and then we went to another place where she would have options. As for more portions at the same restaurant these places were all great and accomodating.
I don't see anyone running out of food options at this place.
The buffet is as good if not better than the ala carte places, and you will be satisfied.

They will take both not sure which they prefer though I was tipping them in both. It seems harder to break a $20USD then it was breaking say 200 pesos, but most of the servers get tipped in both so if you ask some will be able to break it. The front desk can break pesos, but I had to go across the street to a money exchange to ask for 20 $1 bills.

Do junior suites only offer double beds?3 answers
In the regular junior suite (non ocean view), is there an option for a king bed? If a couple decides to get this room are there only doubles available?

The regular junior suite (non ocean view) does not come with an option for double beds. Typically the double beds at a Riu are 2 beds pushed together.
CCGreg
You get two double beds pushed together. Their beds are one of the only things I hate about this hotel and all Riu hotels in general. Other than this the Hotel is one of the best.

is there music playing at the bars? is there a night life6 answers

The only bar with music is the one in the pool. The lobby bar had live music one night.
louie1
Please check with the resort directly for the most up to date information regarding nightlife near or on the resort. Their international phone number is: (01152 to dial out) 998-891-4300.
TimCC
Some of the bars do provide live music on different nights of the week. The resort also has nightly entertainment that changes throughout the year. So there is always something to do!
CCCasey
The pool plays music daily which reaches to the bars by the beach. There is a theatre where there are nightly cultural.performances which include music and dancers and there is a bar in the theatre. If you are looking for nightclub style music, go to Congo bar, senor frogs, or coco bongo. You can also sign up for the bongo tour and see all 3 for 1 price with a personal bartender.
KayleeK
During the day there is music playing by the swim-up bar. At night, the other bar is near the theater so you can hear music playing from there, whether it be by band or karaoke. They have a performance then a band play. We mostly enjoyed our nights on our private balcony, shows and theater isn't our thing, but one night we did sit by the bar and they put on a performance about the Mayans and their culture.
Smoosh
There are a few bars but if you're looking for a more lively place to drink during the day I suggest going to the pool side bar. Music plays from 10am-6pm.

TimCC
Yes, easily accessible and yes, they have equipment to rent
Juan23
beach is fantastic calm. Very swimmable. Kind of water you can float in all day without going anywhere. you can snorkel right there. there are two piers built over the rock formations. The one pier you can't swim under, so the fish congregate next to it around the rocks, the other pier you can swim under and I was told by others there are hundreds of fish. If you don't bring your own flippers and gear they have some, not sure if they rent them or not. There is also a store 1 block away that sells groceries, souvenirs, liquors etc...that would have snorkel gear for a very cheap price.
ZFocht
Yes you can swim on the beach. You can check out free snorkel equipment for 1 hr per day or go across the street and buy your own cheap. Snorkeling was great right off the beach. Actually the snorkeling was better on the beach than it was on an excursion we paid to go on.

Yes, just ignore them. They are cordoned off from the hotel's beach. But we would walk right to the water and walk the beach each day and we just said no to them. No problems at all. What is the weather like in mid march and is this resort considered a party resort (lots of Drinking etc) or more laid back5 answers
4 years, 48 months ago
united states
I would say that you should think more along the "uppity" line, it is incredibly expensive for things that aren't on the streamlined menu's. We were just there in the "cool" season and it felt like it was almost 100 degrees. Considering the significant walking you'll do, I'd view this as a cruise ship experience minus the air conditioning.
Traveler1xyz
As the hurricane season is not until the summer, March is generally clear and sunny with temperatures ranging in the 80s and 90s. The resort itself draws a very mixed crowd and offers plenty to both the clients wishing to relax as well as the clients looking to have fun.
SalCC
We came in may and it's been sunny and 90 degrees everyday. Depending on the time you go will depend on your crowd. In March students might still be in school if it's not spring break. This particular reason resort is more laid back than the next door riu, but there is an occasional group of college students drinking at the bar. They do leave to the clubs at night so it's pretty quiet around the evenings.
Lbag623
The weather is very nice in the spring and fall. You don't have the oppressive heat that you have in mid summer. This is definitely not a party resort. It's upscale and it's adults only.
jpont51
Perfect! 80s and sunny by day, 70s by night!
It's right in between the two. People are drinking, being served and at the swim up bar but it's upper 20 something, 30, 40 and even 50 something. Not new young and irresponsible drinkers. You can walk to the clubs if you want to party after 11-ish when things start to quiet down.

The only bedding option available for the Junior Suite is 2 double beds, unfortunately 1 king bed is not available for this room category.
LizCC
Not true. Actually a King bed is the smallest they offer. The standard is the biggest bed you have ever seen.
Bill1111
It is kind of silly. but our room had the two full sized beds that they put right next to each other to make one large bed. It wasn't such a big deal after all.

No actually they gave us a free upgrade to a king size. I made the mistake of booking the wrong size bed and the hostess at the desk gave us an upgrade.

The construction is set to be completed by your time of travel, so everything should up and running. This, however, can change at any time.

There was no construction at any of the pools when we were there.

My understanding is the remodel is done. I was there two weeks ago and saw no signs of any construction. Call them to confirm whether there is any more scheduled and when. Or have your travel agent do it for you.

You are not required to tip. We went in thinking we would not tip that much, since it is all-inclusive, but we ended up tipping almost everyone. We have never had such amazing service. Every employee interaction was fantastic, and they work incredibly hard. One of the waiters even went into the ocean (not pool) just to continuously keep taking our drink orders. The thing is too - none of the employees ever expected a tip! They were all so humble and kind. If you do choose to tip though, no need to convert your USD to pesos. We also used USD, and it was fine.

Is there shopping you can walk to?5 answers
2 years, 28 months ago
Ohio
Yes. We walked across the street and there were many shops. There was a mall also. It seemed like most everything was similar as far as what they sold. In several stores, prices weren't listed. When we asked, we were given a really high price. My husband got the price down by offering something lower. There was one store with the lowest prices and had price tags. It was a tiny little shop with a sign that said it was cheaper than the flea market.
There is a flea market in walking distance as well, but it isn't directly across the street from the hotel like some of the other shops are. Everything there is pretty touristy.

Absolutely! There is the Plaza Caracol, which is approximately a five minute walk.
