Time of a lifetime

Not having gone on a vacation like this in 30 years we had know idea what to expect. Flight was great, Rooms were really clean, service was top notch. This was an early 30th wedding anniversary gift to ourselves. We were absolutely amazed at the food and service for our meals was over the top of what we could have expected. The staff around the pool always kept us engaged in having fun and making us laugh and kept our refreshments topped off at all times. This trip for sure exceeded all of our expectations. We went with friends and they were able to put us close together in the hotel and that was great for planning our day. We our already looking for our trip next year.

Beautiful resort

The resort was breathtaking and so was our room (a junior suite). The food at the buffet was excellent and the food at the restaurants was good but not great. The swim up bar has one of the best views and is just beautiful. The alcohol selection should have been better. Absolute was the best vodka and I never heard of the Tequila they were serving. The top shelf Tequila was a bottle that you could buy in town for $14.00 US. Not very high end. With that said I drank “mucho” of that Tequila and didn’t get sick. However when in Mexico I’d like to see a better selection of Tequila. The bottom line we had a great time and are plaining to go back to the RIU Cancun next year.

Overall Disappointed

Pros: Customer service is great Pools and beach are overall nice House keeping is good Scuba Caribe staff located in the resort are amazing Transportation was great Cons: Long check in lines Horrible food/desserts Not enough ventilation in rooms so the room gets foggy with AC or after you shower. There's only one server at the beach taking drink orders and hardly gets to everyone. I had to return to front desk after giving a room with no ocean view which I paid for. Spoke to Esther at the front desk and she was AMAZING she apologized and had our room changed the next morning for what we paid for. Overall I expected much more from this resort but that doesn't take away that the resort staff was very kind and attentive.

Excellent value

I’ll start off by saying that I was very impressed with Cheap Caribbean. We arrived at the airport and were immediately met by a Cheap Caribbean representative in the line for Iceland Air. The representative had a list of travelers and we were able to add a bag of luggage to our flight with ease. The chartered flight was terrific. All chartered means is that you fly down and back with the same people who all booked through the travel agency. Everyone is on the same plane, but stays at different resorts for the most part. It was my first time on Iceland Air, which exceeded my expectations. The flight attendants were attentive and each seat had its own television to watch movies and shows. Upon our arrival, we were told where we needed to go to meet up with another Cheap Caribbean representative who would direct us to our ground transportation. After clearing customs and claiming our bags (which took about an hour total), we located the representative exactly where they said they would be. They had another list with everyone’s arraignments. We had a private transfer which I would highly recommend. Within about a minute we were brought over to a new, clean Ford Expedition where our bags were loaded up and we left for our resort, RIU Cancun. In about 25 minutes we arrived at RIU. The check-in line was not too long, but still took about 20 minutes to get through. A waiter bringing around drinks made this time go by quickly. Once getting up to the desk, we were provided with our wristbands, WiFi information and towel passes. We were told that we would need to come back at 3pm (a few hours later) to get our room key and that we would have to wait in line once again. At 3pm we returned to line and waited about 10 minutes. A person from behind the desk asked for guests names who were simply waiting for their room assignments. He told us to take a seat and he would bring our keys to each of us shortly. About 15 minutes (and a few drinks) later, our keys were brought to us. Our room on the 9th floor was spotless. Clean, spacious and well stocked. We did not really utilize the in room bar as we didn’t hang in the room and drink too much. We wanted to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather. The bed was comfortable and I had no problems with the sheets or pillows. I usually have a hard time sleeping out of my own bed, but I slept well here for the most part. The bathroom was spacious, though the shower was difficult to master. The mixer for the water was very touchy and if you didn’t have it in the perfect spot, the water was either burning hot or freezing cold. The shower head was very sensitive as well. If you turned the water pressure up too high, the head would rotate to the wall. Minor issues, though frustrating. The air conditioning in the room worked excellent. The deck slider has to be closed in order for the a/c to work. Six bottles of spring water were also loaded into the room mini fridge daily, along with Pepsi products. The common areas of the hotel are not air conditioned. The most major issue we had with the hotel was that the elevators were SUPER slow. Four elevators with an eight person limit each for 1,000 guests made for long wait times during peak times (morning, dinner, after shows). If more then 8 people got into an elevator car the elevator would not move until someone got out, causing for some interesting conversation in the elevators at times. There were four pools at the resort and a long stretch of beautiful beach. There was a quiet pool on the side of the hotel, which provided exactly that, peace and quiet. There was a pool with a bar, a party pool and another pool all next to each other. The pools got packed by 9am every morning. If you got down by 9, you’d find a few chairs by one of the pools. You could usually get to the beach by 10am and still find plenty of chairs available. The pools and beach were very clean. As the day went on and liquor started getting into people’s systems, the pools got louder and louder, usually by 2pm. The beach stayed calm pretty much all day. Locals would try to sell their products but were not pushy at all. If you said no, they would respect that and move along to the next person. Drink servers would come around the pools and beach taking your drink orders. The service was inconsistent though as they would go from coming around every half hour, to then not seeing them again for hours. The crowd was very diverse as far as age goes. I would say about 10% were families who had children under 10, about 60% were between the ages of 21-30 and then about 30% were 30+ without children. There were a lot of bachelor and bachelorette parties, though nothing too rowdy. Due to the value of the resort, it brought in a much younger crowd who was ready to drink their money’s work. Still, no major issues. The service at RIU was excellent. Every single person had a smile on their face. Every person I spoke too spoke both Spanish and English very well. We had the same waiter at breakfast and lunch, everyday. Gil had a table ready for us, knew our drink orders and made conversation with us daily. The bartenders learned your drinks quickly as well and service was fast. I never waited more than a minute at the bar for a drink. The drinks were good and the liquor was quality. The water and ice were also safe. Each time I got a drink I gave a dollar. Though not necessary, it was definitely appreciated. The food was good, though it did get old eating mostly the same things after a few days. The Buffett was pretty good. Breakfast was excellent, they had anything you could think of and I highly recommend the warm donuts with Nutella. Lunch and dinner had many stations to include, American, Italian, Mexican, Asian, BBQ and desserts. The Asian food in my opinion was actually the best. The specialty restaurants were good, but you could get pretty much the exact same food at the buffet. Only difference was you’d have to serve yourself as opposed to being served. Specially restaurants were an hour wait unless you arrived at 630 when they opened. There was never a wait at the buffet. A few other things... gym is small and fills up early. Room walls are thin and one night were woken by our neighbors getting home from the club at 4am and drinking in the room til about 530 playing music. The entertainment was good on some nights, poor on others. I’d skip the karaoke and cultural show, but definitely stick around for the comedy show, bands or dancing shows. Entertainment times varied from the earliest show starting at 7:45 and the latest at 9:45. Cheap Caribbean has an office right at the resort. If you have any issues, bring it to them and they will hash it out with the resort for you. Very helpful. We ventured out of the resort and few times to explore the immediate area. Besides getting bombarded with people trying to sell you things, I felt very safe. Check out was easy and our transportation back to the airport was right on time and flawless. Thank you for reading and I hope this helps! It was my first time out of the USA, first all inclusive and didn’t know what to expect! Have fun!!

What's to Love

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

No golf carts needed here to get around - you can stumble from the pool to the beach to the restaurants & bars easily.

Three pools with ocean views and breezes means you and your travel mate/partner/husband/wife/dog won't be on top of each other.

The soul-soothing whirlpool off the gym. Yea - you can picture yourself there.

The delicious food & drinks, incredible service, fun-loving entertainment - it's like being wrapped in a cozy beach blanket.

At the cooking stations at the restaurants, they'll cook you up something "on the fly" - now that's what you're talking about!

What We'd Change

The gift shop at the resort is a bit pricey, but right across the street is a large supermarket so you can pick up any groceries you might want or things you forgot for a lot cheaper.

Why You Should Go

It's about 13 miles from the airport & in the smokin' hot Cancun resort area. You've landed in the epicenter of Awesome.

Don't miss Isle Mujeres - stunning beaches, fresh seafood, loads of culture. In town, you can find a museum or two!

You can rent a bicycle and explore that nearby shopping center (or go all the way downtown).

Soak up all that Riu Caribe (sister resort!) has to offer - the diving pool is da bomb.
