Great Vacation & Great Resort!!!

My daughter and I just returned from staying at RIU Cancun for 5 days. We had a great trip! The entry into the airport was a long and crowded process but once we made it through that it was great. I am glad I called ahead and spoke to a CC rep as he instructed me as to what to do. Look for the people with the blue flower shirts! All the way at the end. If I didn't know this beforehand, it would have been overwhelming because there is sooo many vendors! We used the shared AMSTAR transportation. They were great! Highly recommend using this service! The hotel was fantastic. We had a oceanfront suite. It was very nice. Check in staff was great and extremely helpful and very nice! Only a few minor issues with the rooms. 1-The fridge didn't keep the drinks cold. I told the front desk and our CC rep but it didn't get fixed until a guy came to restock and we told him. He fixed it, not sure how, but it was a simple fix. 2-There was not any conditioner offered so we had to go buy some from the supermarket across the street. The location was awesome. Close to the supermarket and shopping and the night life. 3-The room we had was over the theater so was very noisy all night but fortunately I brought ear plugs so popped those babies in and it helped. 4-The mattresses were the worst thing about the room. They really should change those as you could feel the springs and I often woke up with a sore back. Other than those minor issues, the room was great! The pools were nice but the water was too hot on some days so it wasn't enjoyable. The drinks were good but sometimes they were a little skimpy on the liquor. We did enjoy watching the games and activities at the pool. The staff was very involved and fun! The beach was ok. Small but never packed. The water was nice the first day we got there but for some reason got more dirty. Not sure why. There was another pool on the other end of the hotel with a much nicer beach area. However, we didn't discover that until we were leaving :( The restaurants were so so. The buffet was great everyday and the wait staff was great!! They literally had EVERYTHING you could want and it was delicious! We ate at the Japanese restaurant and the service there was terrible. I had to ask for a refill 3 times. The waiter came and gave our neighboring tables refills and took orders but seemed to have forgotten us. The waiter was rude when the last time I asked if I was going to get the refill or not. The food was not great there. Was supposed to get a crab salad and it only had 3 tiny slivers of crab meat. The chicken was not great either. We also went to the steak house. The wait staff was amazing! The food not so much. The steak was very fatty and gritty. The side were good but they gave very little in portions for the sides. Even though tips and gratuity are included we always tipped the waiters and they were very appreciative. They took great care of us every time we came to the buffet. They even remembered what we drank! Everyone was very nice and accommodating. For purchasing excursions, I would recommend buying those outside of the resort. We got 2 excursions and absolutely enjoyed them but found out later paid WAY TOO MUCH! Some of the things offered for the very cheap prices you have to do a time share presentation but I would have been down to give 2 hours of my time and pay a total of $40.00 for 2 excursions instead of $355.00. The Dolphin experience was great and offered a lot. Only complaint there is the water was soooooo dirty! We also did the luxury sailing with snorkeling and that was amazing!!! Definitely would recommend both of those activities. Overall the experience was awesome! Any complaints we had with our trip was minor and to be expected. I would recommend this hotel to my friends and family for sure. It was a great vacation and we definitely plan on going back next year!!

To start we never had clean towels left in a Room we always had to ask for them. The captain's which are the people that run the dining areas where rude to my daughter and myself Reported it to management and nothing was done and no one wanted to talk to me about it. As for the entertainment I thought it was third class. All in all I rate it a 2 star. I also will not be staying at this resort again.. Doug from Colorado

Party Central

We took our kids to Mexico for the first time here. Our first visit to Mexico was to Riu Cancún 13 years ago so we thought they would have fun and we were more comfortable taking them to a place we were comfortable with. They did have a blast! We had a few issues getting there due to storms but everyone was accommodating and understanding of our late arrival. Employees of this hotel take a lot of crap from young kids but they do it with sweat dripping off of them and with a smile on their face. Please make sure you tip these people well. They deserve it! Beach was beautiful. There was a day or two where part of the ocean had some seaweed but employees work their butt off to keep it clean and seaweed gone. The shades of blue were just spectacular. The room and view from it were just phenomenal. It’s hard to find a hotel with such a beautiful ocean view. This was my favorite part of the stay! Important to note. If you want a place to party and celebrate then Cancún is the area to visit. Riu Cancún is within a very short walking distance to Coco Bongos, Senior Frogs, shopping, and a pharmacy. Cancún is a party spot and that’s what people go there for. If you are wanting peace and quiet then visit south of Cancun. (Maroma Beach is stunning)

What's to Love

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

No golf carts needed here to get around - you can stumble from the pool to the beach to the restaurants & bars easily.

Three pools with ocean views and breezes means you and your travel mate/partner/husband/wife/dog won't be on top of each other.

The soul-soothing whirlpool off the gym. Yea - you can picture yourself there.

The delicious food & drinks, incredible service, fun-loving entertainment - it's like being wrapped in a cozy beach blanket.

At the cooking stations at the restaurants, they'll cook you up something "on the fly" - now that's what you're talking about!

What We'd Change

The gift shop at the resort is a bit pricey, but right across the street is a large supermarket so you can pick up any groceries you might want or things you forgot for a lot cheaper.

Why You Should Go

It's about 13 miles from the airport & in the smokin' hot Cancun resort area. You've landed in the epicenter of Awesome.

Don't miss Isle Mujeres - stunning beaches, fresh seafood, loads of culture. In town, you can find a museum or two!

You can rent a bicycle and explore that nearby shopping center (or go all the way downtown).

Soak up all that Riu Caribe (sister resort!) has to offer - the diving pool is da bomb.
