Repeat Vacationer

Visited the Riu Tropical Bay in March 2018 before renovations, and again in November 2018, after renovations. Overall the resort looks great but they still need to work out many of the kinks and finish construction and landscaping ! We had to ask for a change rooms upon arrival because the room smelled like mold due to the air conditioning not being on… They upgraded us to an ocean front third floor room which was awesome !! Spoke to many people and almost everyone got an upgrade because of toilets not working, smells in the room, broken blow dryer’s, broken saves, showers leaking, Etc! They renovated the entire resort in 3 months and still have a way to go! But....The two new huge pools are beautiful with tons of shade and cheers, and the beach is absolutely gorgeous! One pool even has a ramp so it’s handicap assessable an easy for the elderly to walk in an hour… The step at this resort is nothing but amazing, they work so hard 12 to 15 hour days to make your stay enjoyable ! Please bring back the old chicken jerk hut that looks authentically Jamaican… Did not like the new look at all! Kudos to the following staff: Jolly, Gray the best beach waiter, Fresh and Juicy the entertainers, Happy Feet the fitness instructor, Ashley the best waitress for bfast!! They work so hard! The value for the money we paid was still very good because of the beach! We will return but I hope the little things are fixed!

Worth the wait

This was our first trip to Jamaica, I'm not sure what took us so long, but it was worth the wait. Riu Tropical Palace is recently renovated, with construction still going on in some areas of the resort. It bothered some of the guests, for us, it was no problem. Hotel is beautiful, rooms are very comfortable, Biggest Bed ever!! A few kinks with our room at first, but all was worked out thanks to Michael. Beautiful beach area with palm trees for natural shade if desired. Excellent pool bar with the best service ever. Food choices are abundant with our favorite being the Jerk station at lunch time. The entertainment crew is FANTASTIC, you'll enjoy their antics throughout the day and into the night-Lady Sweetie, Chocolate Thunder, Flex, and crew-Thanks for the memories.

Everything was awesome....room, transportation

Honeymoon! The hotel looks just like pics! The room, service & transportation was great! Other reviews state problem w\Amstar...We had NO ISSUES! They were there when we arrived, a little wait tho, for others..We choose "shared transportation". The ride is about 1 1\2 to hotel! Upon arrival we were greeted with a refreshing cool, mint scented face cloth & rum beverage! We were upgraded for free! FOOD: I didn't care for the restaurant food. The buffet food was decent. We enjoyed the breakfast the best! The servers were great!!!! They have 3 nice size pools, 1 including a swim up bar. The pools & beach close at 6pm. There are DIFFERENT shows every night that start at 9:30pm. There's always live music, music type varies each day, that starts at 8:30pm. The entertainment crew are great. They are very involved with the guests. They have plenty of energy & keep different little activities going at the pool & on the beach. Ok, the beach is clean...no seaweed. There are A LOT of locals walking the beach...selling marijuana, ocean excursions, etc. We did parte in one of the ocean excursion, the huge intertube sofa! There are a few different ppl that do this excursion, their prices vary. One local wanted $75. We went w/Captain Stephen, he wanted $50...my husband talked him down to $40 total. We also booked the Bob Marley\Dunn River Falls excursion thru Amstar, which also went well! (this was all day, it takes about 2 1\2-3he's to get to Ocho Rios) They do call your room early the day after you arrive to sell excursions. This didn't bother us because we discuss doing an excursion. It's a little cheaper booking thru Amstar vs prepay with CheapCaribbean. The hotel is really nice! We had a mini bar, we didn't use much & our retrieve was so-called daily with red stripe, red stripe light, water, coke-cola, sprite & tonic water. CON: The bed was hard/very firm which was uncomfortable for me. Also on the last night there was a cat wondering around the resort. This bothered me. Another tip..The hotel door has a slight crack at the bottom where bugs can get in. I was greeted by a huge bug one am. I used a towel along the door. You have to keep your key in the little slot once you walk in the door for the power, including the air. I recommend keeping one key in the slot so air continues when your not in the room. The shower is GREAT!!! Water pressure & temperature is awesome! There is still little removes such as landscape...nothing that will get in the way of your vacation. Shopping: If you are a bargain shoppers when it comes to souvenirs you can walk along the beach, towards the sister resort Rui, there's a lot of locals setup. Now, they can be overwhelming & a little pushy to purchase items. This didn't bother my husband or me..We visited Bahamas, cruise, every year & the locals are the same way. We got sum great deals.....NEVER go with the 1st price...even if they don't come down on the asking price....tell 'em thanks & keep walking...They will come down! There's a nice store on the resort as well! We also paid $20 ($10 pp) for The hotel taxi to take us to town. The sister resort.....You have unlimited access to! I'm not going to lie...if you are more of a party person this hotel was LIT, HOWEVER it's not as clean & the pool is MUCH smaller!!! Their bar area has bee's EVERYWHERE! If you are with a group of ppl you can make your own party at Riu Palace Tropical Bay. If you are on a Thursday and\or Sat check out Club Jungle. It's 3-5 mins....get a taxi. They play hiphop, it's a party scene, dress code dry casual. Also check out Ricks Cafe. We had a great honeymoon & are already planning to go back next year with 2 other couples!!!

What's to Love

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

The stunning beach with ivory, soft sands hugged by the bluest of tranquil, dreamy water.

Melting at the luscious spa, where the massages and facials transport you to Nirvana.

The outrageously delish, lip-smackin' Jamaican BBQ you can nosh on while chillaxing by the ocean.

The Victorian-style buildings bathed in happy, soft pink, which cause instant happiness.

The liquor dispenser in your room. Your hour of happy can start any time of day.

24-hour room service - if you've got a hankering for grub at 3:15 a.m., you can get it. For realz.

The bonfire and DJ on the beach - you'll feel like you're in a movie.

What We'd Change

The airport is a little over an hour from the resort, but once you get there you'll never want to leave.

Why You Should Go

You can hang out at the sister resort, which includes free access & drinks at the disco, Pacha. Woot!

There are oceans of activities for the kiddos, and even a children's playground where you can have some sandy fun.

Must-dos: Rhodes Hall Plantation for horseback riding & Roaring River for swimming in a fresh water sinkhole.

Don't miss bodyboarding, sail boats, snorkeling and/or for a fee scuba and jet skiing. Dive in.

On land, there's water polo and volleyball in the pool for your splish-splashing pleasure.

On the way home, plant yourself in Club MoBay at the airport for grub and A/C. It's so worth it.
