Sunscape Experience

My husband and I booked this trip for our 25th wedding anniversary. We are huge beach lovers, that is why we pick this location because the pictures online were beautiful. Upon arrival the first place we went was the beach. You could hardly see the water because there was soooo much seaweed! We would have hope this would have been told to us that it was a bad time of year for the ocean. Another issue we had was we paid extra money for the Sunclub extra amenities. Such as a private lounge, pool, and beach. What we weren't informed of is this is just so they can try to sell you a timeshare. We sat through the presentation for 2 hours when they said it would only take 90 minutes and at the 2 hour mark we had to just get up and walk out because they were not taking no for an answer. They would just send another person over to talk to us. We paid alot of money for this trip and didn't want to spend the first 3 days dealing with being constantly asked if we were interested in becoming a Sunclub member. The resort itself was beautiful and the landscaping was amazing, but with that said everything else was very disappointing. One last thing, we paid extra money to have the private pool, but there was no activities at our private pool so we had to go up to the mail pool. I feel this should change.

Nope!

The resort itself was nice and clean. But... My room wasn't ready until an hour and a half past check-in time and it reeked of cigarette smoke. I called the front and they offered to send some spray. The cleaning lady was excellent and tried to get the smell out. From the moment my family stepped in the resort we were harassed. We were constantly asked to attend a 90 minute vacation rental promo session. I politely said no at least 5 times until I caved from the pressure. Needless to say, the 90 minutes turned into 3 hours of my vacation wasted and when I finally said "no" at the end of the promo I was close to having a meltdown. Afterwards, we were still harassed by employees wanting to sign us up for excursions. The harassment was exhausting, uncomfortable and rude!

Disappointing stay

I travel internationally every year and I just say that my stay at this particular resort was extremely disappointing. My number one complaint is the discriminatory practices that are occurring at this resort. I witnessed time and time again during my stay the workers give preferential treatment to the European, White Americans, and Indian families over the Hispanic guests staying at your resort. For example in the coffee and pastries shop, I believe called Coconuts Cafe (located at the Bavaro Beach lobby), I went in with family. As I waited to be serviced, I noticed the worker given the non Hispanic families glasses and ceramic mugs with their drinks. After the worker serviced both a European couple and then an Indian family it was my turn. I asked for a cappuccino, she immediately grabbed a small styrofoam cup for my drink. I thought it was odd but I didn’t say anything. I returned at another time and the same worker gave glasses and mugs to the non-Hispanic families and gave me and other Hispanic families styrofoam cups. I demanded that she give me a glass since I was staying just like everyone else and she did give it to me when I asked but the fact that she was giving better treatment to the whites and Indians was appalling to me. She did this every single time i went in that shop. I noticed this type of treatment at the Windows buffet as well. The servers that were refilling the white families coffee cups while my family(all Hispanic) waited around forever for someone to bring coffee and water to our table. This is not a mere coincidence. This is how your resort operates. It seems that Management has taught the workers to give preferential treatment to whites since they might be VIP but not Hispanics. It’s disgusting. I mentioned how unhappy my family and I were staying at this resort and a worker admitted that Management has indeed taught workers to give better service to those that might have upgraded to VIP. The problem here is that there is no way of the workers knowing who is VIP since there is no visible way of a worker knowing. The worker goes based on ignorance and there belief which is that only non-Hispanics can upgrade to the VIP package. I will never in my life return to any sunscape resort. I will make sure to let others know how horrible my stay was. There are other things that were bad as well at this resort but this email is already way too long.

Not vegan/veg friendly, but decent budget resort

This is my fourth all-inclusive resort, but my first time in the Dominican. My review comes from the perspective as a mom with an 11yr old son and a vegan. I guess you could say I'm "lucky" I eat vegan as a dietary choice and not due to allergies or peta reasons. When I tell you there are NO vegan options, please believe me. All of their vegetables appear swimming in butter. Their salad bar usually had some type of pasta salad, a bowl of greens and cucumbers. However the dressing options all contained dairy. For breakfast, it is eggs and meat and pastries. There are pancakes and waffles. Pancakes typically have dairy and waffles do not, but it was very hard to get answers from people about what was in the food. On the second day, I got a form from the front desk that said I was vegan, so that I could show it to the pizza people. Without the form, they refused to make me a veggie pizza without cheese. However, they made it once I showed them the paper. Even choosing to be pescatarian for the trip was difficult. I was surprised at the lack of fish/seafood options, given the location. Other than the struggle to eat, the resort was nice. You get what you pay for. The bed was really hard. Some people like that, but stiff beds hurt my back. We had to change rooms after the first night. We were in bldg 28 and were woken up at 4a to five roosters screaming for an hour. We moved to bldg 24 and it was nice and quiet. My son had a blast playing all of the sports and participating in the activities. He had his own room key and roamed around on his own. For older kids 13-17 there is a teen room and activities. There are pool tables, ping pong, various gaming devices, board games, etc. We checked out a board game for our hotel room, but otherwise my son was outside playing beach volleyball and soccer. The layout ofthe property is weird. After 5 days, I still was trying to sort my way through the maze. The paths are not the most efficient ways to get from place to place, but if you ever off, there are dead ends. I felt like I spent a lot of time just trying to get around. Also, I wouldn't bother paying for the internet. You get free internet in the lobby and the service is nothing I would have paid for. The front desk couldn't even get internet to help me print my boarding pass. I tried for 2 days, over 4 hours and at both lobbies, and could never get a connection to print my passes. Not exactly how I wanted to spend my last bit of time on vacation The staff is super nice and the entertainment was fun. It's a beautiful place. I don't know if I'd return, solely on the food, but if you eat meat, you'd be fine.

What's to Love

Kids get a resort passport that will kick off a scavenger hunt (read: keeps them occupied so you can chill).

Swimming with the dolphins - put your fins in the air (like you just don't care).

The Pirate ship excursion - total blast for you and the young 'uns.

Scuba diving - there's a fee, but the you can't beat the view.

Wringing the stress out of body and soul with delicious scrubs & facials at the spa.

Isla Saona is a boat ride away. Dreamy and secluded.

Water excursions about the wazoo - floating spas, catamaran sailing, whale watching & more.

What We'd Change

The restaurants can be busy with lots of families, but you have plenty of options and you don't have to make reservations.

Why You Should Go

It's 25 minutes from the airport - family fun is hoot and a holler away.

You're right in the center of beautiful Bavaro City, where you can shop, hike, bike & more.

Hoyo Azul, a natural lagoon with crazy gorgeous azure water, is 38 minutes away.

It's 10 minutes from Cocotal Golf Course designed by Pepe Gancedo, Spanish champion.

The resort has a coolio indoor theater perfect for live nighttime entertainment. Par-tay.

It's 15 minutes from downtown Punta Cana and 45 min from La Romana.

You can upgrade to the Sun Club, a family-centric program with upgraded everything.

Day trips are close: Altos de Chavon, Los Haitises National Park and Samana.

There are no irritating wristbands required.
