You Get What You Pay For

Sunscape Bavaro Beach is an outdated and poorly run resort. They boast a large number of restaurants and bars, but of the 14 listed, only 7 were open. The pools were very overcrowded and the drinks we not worth having. The only meal option that was worth anything was the Hibachi place, Chopsticks. We ate there 3 of the 4 nights we were there after trying the food first at the other options, only to go back to Chopsticks. It is cheap so it has that going for it, but be aware, the clientele it brings in comes with the territory.

The resort is average at best. Definitely should NOT be four stars. Weekends are very crowded as the resort has a special allowing local folks to access the resort. While not necessarily a bad thing, it makes for longer lines and less service. Negatives: The check in process is just a very very pushy attempt to get you to upgrade your room and to include the Sun Club. Sun Club benefits are not worth the upgrade in my opinion. The lounge is not impressive and the room was still mediocre. WiFi was spotty. We had two lizards in our room, one was in the bed. Housekeeping was very slow. We didn’t get service till 6 or 7 at night sometimes. And two nights we didn’t get towels till even later. The room was shoddy. You had to put your shoulder into the door to lock the deadbolt. Our phone was broken and had to be replaced by hotel staff. The bathroom door didn’t shut unless you jiggled the handle several times. The paint in the bathroom had lots of scrapes and scratches. Hotel staff primarily speaks Spanish only. Probably less than fifty percent speak English fluently in my experience. The required 90 minute sales pitch for the resort’s Vacation Club is annoying and the program seems like it would never pay for itself for our family at least. The massage I got at the spa was hardly worth it. The most rough handling I have ever experienced at a spa. Drink menu is limited and preparation is inconsistent by bartenders. Positives: We did get vouchers for massages as promised for sitting through the vacation club sales pitch. Many of the staff members are very friendly and provided professional service with a smile. The beach is large and was never too crowded. The restaurants were all excellent, especially the pizza, Asian, and French. Most of the bars had something we enjoyed, it just took a few tries to find out what. The lady doing the hair braiding was excellent. Evening movies by the pool were nice. The walk in shower was very enjoyable. The resort is certainly not fancy or luxury material but it was very adequate. Overall I would give the experience a 6/10. Just don’t expect anything above a three star rating level of service or facilities. I would not stay here again as I would prefer to spend a little more and go somewhere nicer.

Falsely Advertised

We were disappointed in our deal, it was NOT a 4 star property by any means. When we arrived Saturday it was FULL of locals, who push you around and crowded the area. We complained about the local couple staying next door fighting ALL NIGHT LONG and nothing happened we had to hear it Sat & Sun night. The food was average. The beach smelled like sewage it was full of flies also. The VIP bar was the best part, it was really nice and SANTOS was awesome!!! The staff was friendly except the concierge when you check in they force you to go see. They were incredibly pushy trying to get us to by timeshares etc... We kept saying NO THANK YOU, and they just would not let us go. We felt so uncomfortable. It definitely made our day less enjoyable after that. I wish CC would have been more honest on the hotel rating, I understand this property is owned by CC but still, we felt they were dishonest.

The men where more friendlier than the ladies. The female staff were nasty and treated us bad. Didn't have a problem with the men staff. Indoors and outdoors they were very friendly and will go out of their way to help you with anything that you wanted. I will go again, but you need to talk to with your female staff in the buffet, and in the Japanese hibachi.

What's to Love

Kids get a passport that will kick off a scavenger hunt (read: keeps them occupied so you can chill)

The Pirate Ship Excursions - grab your eye patches and hop aboard.

The teal waters that hug El Cortecito Beach, which will hypnotize you for hours.

Swimming with dolphins - Bucket List item you must do.

Scuba diving - there's a fee, but dive in. It's a memory-making kind of thing.

Snagging a boat over to the sublime Saona Island - an unforgettable day trip.

The indoor theater with spectacular shows. Order a drink and prepare to be "wowed."

What We'd Change

Sometimes it's hard to find complete peace at the pool, but this is a family-friendly resort so lots of young ones will be splashing around.

Why You Should Go

It's only 25 minutes from the airport - Instant Happiness is very close.

You can go reef exploring, whale watching or for less water, hang out in a floating spa.

Isla Catalina is near and has dramatically beautiful coral reefs for snorkeling & diving.

The resort can arrange an intimate dinner - just for two - in a variety of romantic spots.

Play a round at the Cocotal Golf Course designed by the famous Pepe Gancedo.

Hoyo Azul, a natural lagoon of crystalline water, is 38 minutes away. It's breathtaking.

Water sports rule here with catamaran sailing, snorkeling cruises, and deep sea fishing.

The 16th century Mediterranean village, Altos de Chavon, is a must-see.
