Definitely not 5 star resort

We reserved this resort on the basis of brand new 5 star resort. We arrived and we're put into a room that smelled so strongly of paint that we couldn't breathe and all of the lights/sprinklers were taped up. They put us in a brand new building that wasn't done yet. We called to request a new room, and the front desk staff Sayed they would send a bellboy w/ new keys. 10 minutes later we began walking to the lobby for new keys. The next room was occupied by another guest...that was VERY awkward!! The next room smelled a little better, but the balcony door didn't lock...that was scary since the balcony was shared with another room. The next day we were moved to a totally different building, but the room had 2 double beds. By this point I was done moving so we just stayed. The hotel has lots of issues....bathroom door didn't close, shower door leaked, and toilet seats missing or broke in public bathrooms near El Mercado. On the way to our 1st room we tried to ignore the people trying to get us to join the timeshare, but the bellboy sent us with him saying that it wasn't a timeshare program. He showed us a few things around the hotel then stated that we could meet 4 breakfast and tour the resort. We met the next morning and again we're promised it wasn't a timeshare. We complained about all of our issues and were told that if we were H10 Premier members we wouldn't have issues WTH?!?! That's not the way to get us interested....part of our resort sucks, but if u pay a lot extra we will make it better. After an hour we were jerks and got up and walked out. The food was decent, but it never changed during the whole week. The staff was friendly and helpful when we needed them, except for a security guard. We always walk the beach at night. On Thursday during the beach party my husband started walking towards the beach, and the security guard told him to stop and he wasn't allowed on the beach. My husband is 38 yrs old and was sober. He wasn't going into the water, so we're still not sure why they stopped us. We will not go back to this resort bc we feel like if you're not H10 members, u don't matter at all!!

Ocean el Faro, beautiful new resort

Stayed here in April of this year with a party of 12, and we all had a great time. Rooms were comfortable, service was great, and there were a lot of dining options. We tried all restaurants and buffets and I don't really have any complaints about any of them. Pros of the resort were: good size resort but easy to navigate, housekeeping service was spot on, beautiful lobby, great pools, not crowded, always found seats at pool and beach, check in was quickest ever, friendly and awesome service, spotless, and great food and drinks. The only cons were that the ocean is extremely rough so no real swimming in ocean and lots of seaweed in the water, no water sports, shower leaks into bathroom, a few things need to be fixed at a brand new resort, and they need more options at night for entertainment. Some nights there wasn't a show, just karaoke and I think it would be nice if they added to the nightly entertainment. All in all a great vacation, and our party was so large, we entertained ourselves and had a blast. No real complaints. We did pay for privilege which didn't offer a ton, but it was nice to have especially on the beach with our own private towel hut etc.

Nice property but haven’t figured out service

Upon arrival check in was seamless. However the vacation package commission folks grabbed us right away. Almost felt like you needed to schedule the next morning. I declined and for the first two days they were after us to visit for their commission I respectfully declined then we were left alone. Now the rooms were nice abs very clean. The pool areas weee very nice and plenty of open beach chairs. Service was not good overall. On the first day we had a great server at the pool. Her name was Flor she was amazing but after day 1 we never saw her again. We would not have anyone come around for hours. Now you can go to the bar and maybe they will help you. There were several times regardless which bar no one would help. Yes we tipped so it wasn’t for the lack of cash exchanging hands. Jose at Mike’s coffee shop was the best service we had. High energy and great service every time. Let’s talk about the buffet you couldn’t get beverages when dining there to save your life. Coffee was like pulling teeth in the morning and a beverage with dinner no way ! Dinner service at the ala carte was slow throughout the week. Up To 3 hours to get dinner served. We are not unreasonable but we were a party of two. I was giving them the benefit due to being newly opened but when I say we were not the only ones that felt the service was very poor. That is the topic of discussion by many. We were not privileged which may have been different but I got the feeling if you weren’t willing to buy into the vacation package you were not treated well. Depending what n what you want from a vacation proceed with caution. Yes they are building more rooms so stay clear of garden views you see only construction. If you want an ocean view bring your walking shoes a long way from the lobby and dining options from the beach.

FABULOUS STAY AT OCEAN EL FARO

After reading quite a few negative reviews - I was beginning to get a bit nervous. No need to worry - this place is beautiful. While there is definitely room for improvement - I am rating this 5* because we had an INCREDIBLE week. (We are 2 couples in our 50's.) Beach: 10 Tons of palapas offering lots of shade. The beach in front of the resort is beautiful - water so many shades of blue and green. Just a 3-4 minute walk to the left past the construction is the MOST beautiful cove. Water calm and crystal clear. We went there every day after lunch and played in the water. Perfect for floats or ball playing. Cove = GORGEOUS! Felt like we were on Gilligan's Island! Pools: 10 The pools were large and sparking clean. No matter what building your room is in - you are literally a minute away from a pool. Tons of loungers AND moveable umbrellas. The lazy river is a blast. There are plenty of tubes. We brought our own and never used them. You could always find floats at the lazy river pool bar. Tip: Be careful when entering the pools. The edge of the pool is curved and slopes down. We saw quite a few people take a fall. Room: 9 The rooms are spacious. The bed was incredibly comfy. Nice little desk area next to the slider which made it easy to work on my laptop. WIFI connection was excellent. Rainfall shower was very nice. Maids cleaned our room each morning before 11. Not the best cleaning of the floors - but our bed was always perfectly done and fresh towels left. Mini fridge stocked each day. We were in building 6 facing the construction on the 1st floor. We were never bothered with noise and liked being on the 1st floor. Food: 7.5 The food is plentiful and if you can't find something to eat, you are the problem. We had breakfast at the buffet each morning and food choices were plentiful. Lunch every day at the oceanfront buffet was a nice change - less options then the main buffet but everything was very fresh and neatly kept. Views from the oceanfront buffet are beautiful with outdoor seating as well. Loved not having to make reservations for the restaurants. We ate at the Italian twice, Steakhouse once, Japanese twice and main buffet twice. (Japanese hibachi is the only restaurant where reservations are needed.) Mike's coffee house is excellent. Worth waiting in line. PS. Long pants for men are required only at Blue Moon. Service: 6.5 The resort needs more staff. Everyone was very friendly and we were patient. I have no problem getting out of my seat to serve myself - but if you expect to sit back and be waited on immediately, you may be disappointed. The staff is VERY friendly and tries hard to please. Our favorites were Julio Caesar, Dayvan at the buffets and Darihiana (bartender at the piano bar.) I am certain service will improve over time. Extra amenities: 10 Loved bowling after dinner each night. Loved the lazy river. Loved the foam party. Kid's waterpark is a child's dream! Timeshare - I avoided the white shirts at all cost. Annoying. Just say "no gracias" and keep moving. They did not bother us at the pool at all. On Wednesday - there were outside vendors placed in the middle of the resort. Also annoying. They try hard to sell you things even though we had no desire to shop. I think this area would be better situated on the terrace outside of the lobby rather than having them "hawk" everyone walking the main thoroughfare. Transfers: 10 Amstar was great. We did shared transfers and got direct service from the airport to the hotel and back. Weather was excellent during our stay. 80-85 degrees each day with a beautiful breeze. Bring your 50 sunscreen - you will need it! We will definitely consider returning to this resort again!
