Prior to arriving to Ocean El Faro, we became H10 members and Contacted the hotel about the party of 15 we were traveling with. Request for accommodations in the same Building were met. Rooms were ready by 3, as stated. Check in was uneventful, noting not overly friendly or welcoming. There were no welcome drinks or H10 welcome gift. Not that We were expecting a major gift, but when you offer something, it should be presented. We waited at the snack bar for snacks/lunch after a long morning of travel. There seems to be a lapse in lunch offering. Room: At first impression, the room was nice, clean and comfortable, however once settled there were some issues. The shower leaked into the bathroom making half the floor wet and causing puddles. The double sinks both leaked. It was necessary to have a plumber in the room to fix the sink, but the shower was never fixed. After fixing one sink, the other then was also leaking. Pools/outdoor lounging and amenities: ample space, plenty of chairs even once the local Friday/Saturday crowds came in. Pool entertainment staff were great. They (Ana, Ariel (SuperSonic), Chris Rock Jr and Coca Cola) did a great job getting guests involved and having fun poolside as well as nightly entertainment. Upkeep on grounds and cleanliness could have been better but seems like they tried to keep things tidy Restaurants: quite honestly, overall terrible service. The restaurants were well appointed, pretty decor, however terribly understaffed. Mercado: Breakfast buffet was never set up timely for guests arriving for breakfast, napkins were rarely brought to the tables and getting even a simple glass of water was a challenge. While the buffet in the main restaurant offered plenty there was rarely a change in the variety. Lunch buffet in the main buffet was the same as breakfast, understaffed and not ready for the crowds on site. Drink orders were either not offered/taken and when we were able to flag down an employee, you rarely got what you asked for. La Locanda: Was a terrible experience. No napkins for the majority of the meal, again drinks were slow, only having asked for wine and water, it should not have been as troublesome. The food took an excessive amount of time to be served and was cold upon being served. Understandably, our party of 15 was at separate tables, but they tried to accommodate us sitting at the same time. Steakhouse: Our party of 15 was seated closely together, which was nice, not expected by we understand it is a larger party, service was good. Food was cooked well and presented in a timely fashion. By no fault of their own, there was a storm and the lights went out, the staff did an exceptional job keeping drinks full and maintaining normalcy in the darkness. Overall a good experience and we did go back another night during our 8 day stay. Mexican: very good experience. Seated promptly, served a welcome drink and chips w salsa. Our server was very good and food was good as well. Pez Dama: smaller buffet for lunch, but a good experience. Wait staff and hostess were very accommodating. I wish Pez Dama would have been open for dinner but it was not for our entire stay. Mikes coffee: Very good. Kati, I believe is her name was friendly and always smiling. She made small talk when ordering and always happy. Coffee drinks were good and the healthy drinks/smoothies were refreshing. Sakura: we were online for reservations at 10:20 am, was able to get our party a reservation for 9pm. While we were only 3rd on line, I believe reservations for privilege guests are put in first, so we were happy to at least get a reservation for the night we wanted as it was our twin daughters 11th birthday. Food was great, chef and service were equally as good. It was a fun experience and we enjoyed Sakura. The hostess’ (Lydia at the steakhouse and the other women at La Locanda) were pleasant and tried to accommodate dinner requests. Overall I would say that Ocean El Faro has potential but they really need to step up with staffing. I want to say they could have been more welcoming and friendly but maybe they lacked in this due to being understaffed and trying to multi task. They do need to have a check on the rooms, all of our rooms in our party had something wrong with them. Primarily the water problems in the bathroom. One room on the first floor which was a swim up pool view had no lock on the sliding door and cold water all week in the shower Restaurants were often closed more than expected for dinner which made it hard to get into some for dinner. We did need to eat in the main buffet one nigh, early in our stay, because we didn’t get to the restaurants early enough to get on a wait list. We realized that if we all or at least one person didn’t get to the restaurants by 6:15, we were less likely to get in. I would like to note that while the beach/ocean was not usable at the time we were there. The employees in the beach were working hard to clean up seaweed. We walked in the beach twice for a little while but did not stay because the water was difficult to get into. Having travelled to the Caribbean and Mexico before, and living in swfl, I understand you can’t fight Mother Nature. It’s unfortunate for ocean el Faro that some guests blame the hotel for the seaweed and beach issues. I hope Ocean el Faro can remedy some of the service issues they are experiencing - but with so many other all inclusive in the Caribbean, I can say we would not chose this hotel again. We are Melia owners and while we dont travel to Melia hotels every year, we would return to them as well as other hotel groups before considering an Ocean hotel in the future. It is unfortunate since the hotel is pretty and set up nicely, but friendliness and service are lacking at this time.

Good Value for Students

Ocean El Faro is a good resort for just graduated college students. We arrived late (around 6:30pm) and still had to wait to speak to the front desk and check in. We were placed in the adult-only section and had a balcony that overlooked the pool which never was rowdy like the central party pool. It was nice to be close to the beach as well. Many other reviews complained about construction but we were never exposed to the sounds from our room. The room (as many other reviews mentioned) was constructed a little bit hastily but it was clean and beautifully decorated. There was hole in the entry hallway where the large door handle had hit it. The shower door to the bathroom was a struggle to open and we never closed it (we closed the main door instead). In fact, the shower would be awesome for a couple because it had two spa faucet heads on either side! The room was serviced every day :) Meals were a breeze as long as you planned it out. The buffet (el mercado) had great variety and was of good quality. The restaurants we tried were all pretty good. We went to Sakura, Blue Moon, Steakhouse, La Locanda, El Mercado, Pez Dama, and Mike's Coffee. The Sakura is a must to attend! It is the only restaurant that is reservation and get on line before 11am to book for that night. We avoided the hours wait that others experienced by going to eat 6pm. We never were waiting for food or service. Some of the food like the meat were a little below usual american standards but we were never hungry thanks to the el mercado pasta station. The amenities of the resort are great, particularly the pools! The sports area was just a little too hot to go to at midday as there is no cover from the sun but they have good facilities. The beach was a nice place to relax but we never swam in the ocean because of the seaweed and honestly the red flag always seemed to be up. The shows, pool activities, and beach party were a nice touch to the resort atmosphere and there were many things to do at anytime. The employees are great at El Faro. However, as two younger women, we were stared at in and out of our bathing suits. Eventually, we had to accept it as a norm but it could be uncomfortable for a solo female traveler. Obtaining excursions was a breeze with the many representatives to talk to and they are very organized. We were never approached by the H10 white shirt employees like other reviews (probably because they know we have no $ to spare!). Chris Rock and the other entertainment employees are amazing people. They taught us merengue, bachata, and salsa, as well as, danced with us every evening. When interacting with employees, it would definitely help to have some spanish skills but it is not a requirement to have a good time. Overall, I would recommend this place to my peers and families! Keep in mind that the DR tourist industry employee salary is heavily based on tips. There were times water and food services was not provided without some liquidity.

Nice hotel.

Hotel was very good. The pool was excellent especially with orquídea serving us. Staff was super friendly. The beach was ok, not great. Very dirty. Our AC stopped working and we had no hot water for 2 days. The place is beautiful.

Best Future Resort in Punta Cana

Beautiful resort with amazing rooms, pools and beaches! You can definitely tell that the resort just opened up as they are very understaffed and the staff needs more training. Overall, it was an amazing experience and in a few years they will probably be one of the top resorts in the country! They have a lot of potential to grow once they hire more staff. Upgrading to privilege was one of the best decisions we made!
