Worst Purchase ever!
I came thinking I was going to have a great time on my first mommies trip, this resort gives the Dominican Republic a bad name the food was disgusting.I have traveled all over the Dominican Republic and never had such bad experience, I had two roaches in my room...the hotel has cheap liquor names that I never heard in my life .wish I could get a refund . Never will I recommend this place to anyone. And let me finish by saving I NEVER GIVE REVIEWS BUT FOR THIS ONE I HAD TO.
We had a blast . Great vacation at a great price. All services and facilities are outstanding. Occidental offered a fantastic daily entertainment program making our 7-day vacation very enjoyable.
Good stuff:
The beach is nice, well maintained, clean.
Plenty of pool options from baby to adult ages.
Due to my disability I got a room upgrade in a better location with patio, directly by the beach with jacuzzi tub- thank you occidental punta cana for your understanding and consideration!
Food was good, plenty of choices, no limits on restaurant reservations as long you book them soon enough in advance (2 reservations per room per day so you can practically book 4 dinners/4 days in 2 separate trips to costumer service desk in 2 days). My family loved their "snack area" with fresh made stone oven pizza.
Housekeepers ware very nice and accommodated my every request (extra clinex, extra water bottles, no fumigation due to my alergies, extra towels- I needed all those due to my disability condition and they accommodate it all)...
Entertainment was not too bad (circus, dancers, some funny comedy program, kids program, foam party at beach, etc). I think for my teen there was not much stuff that got her attention but for adult entertainment it was not too bad.
Grounds and garden ware upkeept meticulously, no waste, no unsightly stuff, just beautiful and clean.
Bad stuff:
Beach is not very shallow so it is not excellent for small kids to go alone in the water, especially after rain storms when waves are bigger and stronger (I was there end of July when the rainy season starts. I did get in 8 days about 3 rain storms on 2 separate days, where one of the storms produced huge waves where majority of adults did not bother going into water at all post the storm).
There are sales people at the beach. If you like to relax you have to go back, away from the first few rows of chairs from the water. If you are in the first rows they walk entire day up and down, randomly yelling as they pass by. They do not walk up to people to make you purchase anything, they just walk up and down the beach and make noise, making people aware they are there. I wish those guys ware limited to half hour in the morning, half hour after lunch, half hour in the evening before dinner, but not walking all the time up and down making noise.
I was questioning cleanliness of pools since there was a lot of stuff swimming in particular areas of the pool (sunscreen oils, cups, palm debris, etc). I reported it to the costumer service and next day it was still there, so they did not do much about it or it gets accumulated every day where the staff does not care much to clean it out frequently.
The only swim up bar at the main pool is ridiculous. There is no line at it, and there ware only 2 bartenders for all the people. The bartenders seemed to be biased towards the Spanish speaking people, laughing with them, joking around, serving up to them, while we others could stand indefinitely by the bar waiting for our turn. In 2 days I went there only one time and had to yell at the bar tenders after I was standing there for 6-7 minutes, they served about 8-9 people ahead of me, once the bartender started talking to a woman next to me that just walked up to the bar but still kept ignoring me after I stood there for 6-7 minutes and 2 other guys that waited there even longer than I am, I started yelling at the bartender. In my opinion they either need more bartenders at that swim up bar so they can pay more attention to order of people walking up to the bar, or they need to have a line formed and dont serve random people at the bar, but rather serve only people in the line. I reported that issue to costumer service too but after that incident I never bothered to use that walk up bar again, since in my perception it seemed that they rather give preferential treatment to the people speaking Spanish that "camp" out at the bar whole day long not leaving it, being drunk, having fun with bartenders.
My upgraded room had leaking toilet, was reported to housekeeping and they cleaned it immediately. Not sure if maintenance was there after that in the room but I went to beach so did not bother to follow up on it. The toilet kept leaking throughout the stay, but it was not too bad, so I did not bother wasting my time on reporting it every single day. After hausekeeping in my room, it was cleaned every day so again it was not a huge deal.
Overall:
It is a beautiful resort. Food is not bad with plenty of choices. There are several bars so the swimup pool bar is not the only option due to my bad experience at that particular bar. Beach is beautiful but rather suited for adults and good swimmers not excellent for small kids especially during rainy season. Pools are awesome due to variety of them, except again one area in the main pool seems to be "garbage" collection area and staff is not doing much about it. Still there are other smaller pools which are clean and not overcrowded. Sales people should knock it little off and give people some peaceful, quiet time, not randomly yelling around the beach.
I am very objective, realistic, and detail oriented :) maybe some people would not pay attention to all of it, but I do. Still even me being picky, I think the resort and service is definitely good. Considering the amount of people going through such resorts, I think they still do a good job and my issues maybe would not bother other people at all.
Occidental Punta Cana was Absolutley amazing! The beach was beautiful! And the pools were nice. Room was clean and comfortable. Saw a couple bugs tho. Also check out time was 12-00pm and at 1045am they cut our power to the room.. which i wasn’t to happy about but overall it was amazing. Some staff were a little rude and didn’t help. Others were amazing and sweet and friendly. Food was eh. Best place was probably the taco place or the snack place above the pool. Overall my stay was amazing. Everything went smoothly i had no problems whatsoever minus the power going off at 1045.. i researched for months on a resort to stay at and this place was def an amazing pick! I would most def return to Occidental Punta Cana !

a bar is at the pool... 2 story. The upper has hamburgers as well as refreshments. I think the bottom serves drinks to those in the pool. As I am not a drinker, I did not use this, but am pretty sure that is what if was for. The pool, however, closed at 7PM!! bummer.

Is topless sunbathing allowed at this resort?11 answers
Any nude or topless sunbathing allowed at this resort or beach?
7 years, 87 months ago
nj
All resorts which are family-friendly usually do not allow topless bathing as there are children on the property.
MariaCC
I didn't see any topless sunbathing when I was there 2 weeks ago. Just the ones laying on their stomachs with the tops undone. I'm not sure if they actually don't allow it though -- maybe no one wanted to try. There was some flashing one out of control day by the swim up bar though.
ScubaJude
It must be allowed, or not enforced if it is not allowed because we saw quite a few topless ladies walking the beaches. Since it was our honeymoon and we were kidless, we didn't care, but others with children certainly would.
MemphisHoneymoon
We did not see nude bathing, but saw several instances of topless bathing on the beach.
Toni13
Topless sunbathing was allowed and occured at the beach.

some elderly women were topless

How is night life?4 answers

The resort showcases live, nightly entertainment in the open-air amphitheater. Several times a week, the resort's exclusive orchestra, the Occidental Fun Club Band, performs live music for audiences of all ages. The hotel also offers merengue dance classes.
MariaCC
Night life at the Occidental Grand was quite good.
Garland
there is none. the "disco" is being renovated til Feb
Sydney91
It's alright - on the resort there is a club called Mungo, that is packed every night, alot of the locals come here. The music was pop on Saturday and then they play tons of salsa, etc. It's free if your on the Occidental Resort, but have to pay for drinks (they offer all the top shelf liquors). Also, they have a package to this club called Imagen - it's inside of a club for $60 per person. Ridiculous...since we can party for free on the resort and cheaper in the states. Downer is that your shuttled there by a bus and if you don't like it and want to leave..you have to take a taxi back to your resort since the tour bus doesn't pick you back up till 3am.

There is a a mini casino in the lobby featuring slot machines. The resort does not advertise free transportation to the local Casinos.
KellyCC
There is a small casino inside the hotel and I would say approximately a 5-8 drive to the big casino down the road. I dont think the hotel provides transportation but I didn't ask.
Spowell23
A few people within our party of 13 went to the Hard Rock Cafe Resort to play at their casino. I believe there was a fee for non guest and $30 or $40 USD round trip fare.
The make shift casino on the premises was small and consist of old slot machines. The casino was always closed.

somewhat but they had tons of golf carts constanty driving around giving rides

yes it is very spread out. The hotel is not very well handicap accessible. I also have dificulty walking. Make sure you are on the first floor. The specialty restaurants were up a lot of stairs so I was unable to go for dinner. the buffet was also enjoyable and the food was very good. you can call a bellboy to drive you to the beach because it is to far to walk.

The resort is rather large and does cover quite an area. Most of the restaurants are located near the front of the resort near the front desk area. There are some other places to eat (more relaxed) around the pool and beach area.

How far to town?5 answers
How far is this resort to town? In addition to tours, I like to step out on my own and experience the culture of each place I visit. Price for taxi each way? Is there nightlife in town?
6 years, 80 months ago
Kansas city
This resort is located 20 min from the airport on the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic, in the center of the famous Playa Bavaro area.
CaitlinCC
Depends what your looking for but 20 minutes top from the air port and 5 minute walk to a couple a fun bars and shops not sure what all the shops have to offer pretty sure the basics
annbanana
The resort is walking distance from town! Very safe place to walk. taxi are approximately 20us dollars each way. Nightlife is very very active. A lot of concert with famous singers
Yady
Outside of the resort maybe 10 minutes are some local stores, your not going to get much for everything since your American (as I am) is a hustle from the taxi, to the food, to the entertainment and I went off the resort everyday for 4 days.
Taxi was roughly $10-20 bucks each way
And they have a club on the resort "Mungo" which is a top club and alot of the locals come here so it's packed every night. There is another club "Imagen" which is in a club. The CC representative came the next day and this was offered to us for $60 a person...not sure if this sounds feasible to you but in DC I can get into a club for free and use $60 to drink.
Reserve
The resort is located in town. Walk outside the resort and you are there but would not suggest. And if you choose to venture off the resort, please do so during the day.
There is a club located on the premises named "Mangu."
Beware... the night club is not managed by the resort although its located on the property. The club is managed by the locals. Please avoid any person wearing a white wrist band. This can save your life. If you dance with or talk to a person with a white wrist band expect to pay. The locals are able to identify what country you are from by the color of your wrist band. Too many scams!

What baggage is covered in the flight can we check a bag or only carry on?4 answers
I plan to fly out of Chicago thru united airlines
5 years, 63 months ago
Illinois
Baggage fees are always separate from a package booked through Cheapcaribbean.com. You can find United's baggage policy on www.united.com
CCGreg
you can carry on and check, personally carrying on would be alot easier , less of a hassle
meredithderemigio
Checking in a luggage requires you to pay around $30-50 dollars or if you chose to only bring a carry on for free.
Rudiiii
It depends what tickets you purchase.
I had basic economy and was able to only have one personal item in the cabin without extra charges. I could not request my seats but they ware assigned randomly to my family and we did not sit all together. I paid for a checked in bag $30 extra in each direction (total $60 for roundtrip).
If you like to rather have a carry on in addition to personal item then you have to buy upgraded economy tickets, NOT the basic economy once. I believe they offered me upgraded economy for extra $20 per person. Then I could have had one personal item for free, one carry on item for free and to choose my economy seat.
For checked in bags they charge you either way no matter what tickets you have, expect you are preferred united flyer with their own credit card from united and extra miles member with united, etc...
