Lousy place

This was my 5th stay there. I will not return. From the moment we arrived to check in they tried to upsell me. Supposedly no 2 bed Jr suites were available, altho there were not many people there compared to past. They finally had us go to a King Room temporarily. Finally, after insisting on a room, we obtained one. Food was mediocre at best, wrong wifi, sat in the Italian Place, for 45 minutes before they took our order, while everyone around us were served before our order was taken, and they arrived after us. Pool bottom has big pieces of bottom out of it as you walk in. We left two days early. In all of our stays before we LOVED it. Not any more

Ok, if you ignore the seaweed and time-share scam

OVERALL – Pretty good, if you can ignore the carpet of seaweed and the pushy time-share sales pitch. Grounds are well kept, and resort has a nice old-world charm to it, but at times edges into “fake luxury” territory. Neighboring Iberostar Punta Cana (which you can walk to if you stay here) was more low-key and enjoyable, and probably does a better job of accommodating international guests. FOOD – The food was actually better at the buffet than at the restaurants. Seafood, coffee and anything chocolate were all excellent at the buffet. The restaurants, however were a total joke. They’re basically taking school cafeteria food and trying to dress it up like a 5 star restaurant. The quality of the restaurant food did not meet the expectations set by the atmosphere and level of service. The only exception was the Japanese place, because they put on a good show and the food was decent. BEACH / POOL – The beach was covered in seaweed (no exaggeration). To get to the water, you had to take a running start, and leap over an 8-foot wide 6-inch deep carpet of seaweed. There was so much seaweed in the water it felt like a drowning hazard. The water was not clear at all and was a murky brown color. The beaches in Long Island and New Jersey are much nicer than what we saw here. We heard that they had an abnormally bad summer for seaweed, and that the Caribbean side is generally more clear. We did most of our swimming at the pool, which was nice enough. ROOM – The Villa we stayed in was amazing. It was huge and had a nice firm mattress, high ceilings, quiet central air conditioning, and a nice rustic vibe. The grounds overall were immaculate and very well maintained, and there was a nice duck pond and plenty of tropical plants. SALES PITCH – The low point of the vacation was the “sales pitch”. It’s basically a high pressure sales tactic, bordering on a scam, to try to sell you some sort of time share, or VIP club. They ask you all sorts of invasive personal questions, (age, occupation, etc. ), presumably to try to gauge how much money you have, and how much they can take you for. We were unknowingly conned into hearing the sales pitch by our “concierge” who gave us amazing service at first and earned our trust, only to lead us to the scam. After declining the sales pitch, the level of service dropped off considerably, and honestly, we felt unwelcome. As far as I can tell, the concierge exists only to lure un-suspecting guests to the time-share scam. My advice to anyone who just wants to enjoy their vacation without being sold anything: when you check in, tell them “no sales pitch” and politely decline the services of any concierge, or any free massages. BONUS: CATS! – Cat lovers, you’re in luck. The place is full of semi-domestic stray cats. Most seemed nice and friendly, and we were able to pet and feed them. I’m not sure what the official resort policy is on the cats, but we saw them as a bonus.

Worst place ever

I have traveled to many places including resorts in Punta Cana and Iberostar Bavaro is by far the worst place I have been to. There were many tiny bugs in the room. Food at buffet and specialty restaurants were very salty, poor quality and almost un-editable. Service was horrible and most of all, it is not a secured place for your family. One night, before we went to get dinner, I put all our valuables in the lock box and counted the money. After dinner, when we came back to our room, security personal had opened our door and replaced our lock when we were not in the room even though I had do not disturb sign on the door. I checked the lock box and it was already opened and my money was missing. We did had lot of problem with our key card and had to get new one because it did not work multiple times but they never informed us that they were going to send someone to replace our lock but regardless, he should not have entered our room when no one was in the room and we had do not disturb sign. Afterward, I had to go to office and talk with multiple managers for them to start investigate which took 2 days to get response. Meanwhile, as precaution, I have to cancel many credit cards and debit cards I had in the wallet which meant I did not have any source of money for excursion while we stayed. Not to mentioned that we did not feel safe any longer staying in our room but we did not have much option. Final response we got was that it was due to human error and as for our “discomfort”, we received $40 as compensation. I don’t understand how you can explain security breach and theft as “human error” and our ruined family vacation can be compensated with $40. If you value your vacation, time, money and security for your family, do not go here.

Great week at Iberostar Bavaro!

My family of four (me, hubby, 12yo and 8yo boys) had a GREAT week at this resort. ROOM: They boys liked the "condo" layout of the room and resort. Room was nice, but I will share that we had originally asked for a King room because I read another review that you can get beds brought in for additional guests. I was going to get a King for us, little guy on the couch and older guy on a rollaway, but when we checked in the front desk person told us we wouldn't fit that way and instead switched us to a two double bed suite. I wish we didn't change. My hubby and I didn't fit in the double, so he slept with little guy, older son in the other bed, and I was on the couch. We learned from a similar sized family at the swim-up bar that they had a King and two rollaway beds (that they got from housekeeping - not from the front desk). UGH! Ah well, it really ended up being fine, just wish we had known ahead of time because I would have been more "firm" when we checked in. One other note on the room - we had a GREAT location - on the side, close to the Japanese restaurant and nice and quiet at night, plus not too terrible far to walk to pool/beach. Some condos are REALLY far...so be careful of that when checking in. FOOD/DRINK: food was pretty good for an all-inclusive. My husband and I were pretty impressed. We tried all the restaurants except Jambalaya (we had a resi, but it was too late and we heard a the pool it wasn't good). Japanese was the favorite, but the Steakhouse was also good. HUGE portions, and had I known my 12yo and I would have shared a steak. The buffets were pretty good, but we actually liked the buffet at the pool best. Drinks were fine--we heard if you tip you get better alcohol, but we just stuck with what they gave us. BEACH&POOLS: the pool is really really beautiful, and a really fun layout that the boys loved. Highly recommend this property simply for that! They say no saving lounge chairs allowed, but it happens so you do have to get up really early (I'm talking 6am!) to grab a shady spot for the day. The beach was a complete bust and that was disappointing. They are experiencing an invasive seaweed issue which we learned has been happening every year since 2011 from April - July. This year it went well past July and was still a huge problem when we were there (end of Aug). So bad that swimming isn't really an option (well, you can swim in the ocean, but not pleasant). Bummer. So we stuck at the pool...not a bad way to spend a week! OVERALL SERVICE: overall, the service at this property is top-notch. Great staff who want to make sure you're enjoying your week. Nice concierge staff and really wonderful staff at the pools and restaurants/buffets. The entertainment was fun. There was water aerobics twice a day and Star Friends performed twice a day at the pool too. The evening entertainment was fun to watch too. They certainly put their hearts into it which makes it even more fun to watch. I highly recommend this property!
