Not So Grand at the Grand Bahia

Rarely have I been disappointed on a vacation but this one was barely OK. There were some highlights at the Grand Bahia but have to be honest in that this one missed the mark on a number of areas and our visit was not as grand as we expected it to be. Will not be back again. Had a great experience at the Paradisius Playa del Carmen la Esmeralda, Mexico two years ago which set the benchmark for our group. My candid notes: Positives: + Climate was outstanding in early March-thank you Mother Nature! Low humidity, 85 degrees F, ocean was comfortable and seaweed free. + Grounds are beautiful; property, rooms and restaurants are very clean. + Pools are sparkling and plentiful. + Staff in hotel and restaurants are all friendly and welcoming. + Beach is tropical, plenty of palapas but you have to break the rules like everyone else and get to the beach/pool early before breakfast to lay down towels to hold a spot. + Buffet breakfasts were decent, but had to go the the omelet stations to really get something hot. Nice variety overall. + Food cooked at the beach (usually a seafood paella or pasta) was very good-tasty and hot. + Tram service was fast and stopped regularly. If you don't feel like walking this service is reliable. Connects to all the restaurants, reception, pools and beach. + Grounds are spacious and the complex is large...OK for me but not if you are looking for a smaller resort. Negatives and Need Improvements: - Check in was slow. Room assignments for our group were not completed as requested. - We were limited to 3 a la carte restaurant reservations over the 6 days....did not see this limitation in the literature but may have missed it so beware. -Book your a la cart restaurants BEFORE you arrive. Made ours on day of arrival and had a hard time booking them. Had to wait till end of week and not at best times. - Long pants for men was not needed at the a la carte restaurants, contrary to advice sent to us in advance-dress shorts are fine. - Buffet lunches and dinners also had nice variety but most dishes were barely warm. Due to the limitation on the number of a la carte restaurant recommendations we were overdosed on buffets! - At a la carte restaurants appetizers are still served buffet style...only dinners are ordered...Cannot get away from the buffet! - Room towels are thin, bathroom has no exhaust fan. - Air conditioning was not cool in our room. Requested service twice but never repaired. Well, at least on one visit the service person turned the ceiling fan on for us....big help. - Room safe did not work. - Television not working properly-fuzzy reception, remote buttons were not set up correctly (generic remote control that was not programmed properly). Cable connection on back of TV was held on by tape. Requested repairs but were never corrected. - Cannot order food at the pool. - Beach service for drinks was spotty most days. - Free wifi but connections were lost frequently. Wifi available in the reception lobby only. -Amstar was delayed one hour picking us up for the return to airport. Angry driver who was not in Amstar uniform.

Another great trip to Grand Bahia Principe.

Even though the pools were very packed during the week, we had another great week at this resort. Resort is very large but easy to get around with all the shuttles running. Great variety of food and drinks and no shortage of places to get them. We received outstanding service from a number of employees and would highly recommend this place. It's not the fanciest resort but you definitely get you money's worth.

Room was terrible! Looked nothing like the pictures shown online. Most rooms are very far away from beach, pool and dinning. Paid over $500 more just to get a clean room which they called an “upgrade”! Food selection very limited and all drinks totally watered down! Not worth the money at all

What's to Love

It's an all-inclusive, all fun-in-the-sun hot spot for all ages.

Elongating on Bavaro Beach, named one of the top beaches on the planet by UNESCO.

Feeling the softness of your luscious skin after the oats and honey treatment at the spa.

Hydro-massage bathtub in the rooms - put in some bubbles and you're golden.

What We'd Change

Though wandering through the solariums and tropical gardens on the way to the beach can be fun, it's also quite a walk! Thankfully, the resort has free shuttles.

Why You Should Go

It's 25 minutes from the airport. You'll smell the salt of the sea very soon.

Your little urchins can splash around all day (every day) at the children's water park.

You can upgrade to The Club Golden & Golden Principe Club & enjoy rock star status.

You have access to everything (except buffets) at Grand Bahia Principe Bavaro and Turquesa.
