Beautiful Beach but that's it

My boyfriend had never been on a tropical vacation before and I had stayed at The Bahia Principe Bouganville in LaRomana a few years ago, so thought this would be a good option. Yes, the beach and waters were beautiful but my compliments stop there. The bed in the room was horrible, very uncomfortable for both of us. The service was ok, we both felt like the staff were a bit robotic and didn't try to understand our questions or answered with "I'm sorry, I can't help you" but with no suggestion to find an answer. This resort is part of a 5 resort complex so it was very crowded. Hardly a beach chair to be found on the beach or by the pool if you didn't get up before dawn to claim your chair. We were very careful not to drink the water, but my boyfriend ended up extremely sick on day 3 and is now being treated for parasites back at home. This is the last tropical all inclusive vacation we will take.

Not a 5 Star resort! EMPLOYEE'S: 90% are exceptional. The other 10% are HORRIBLE. ROOM: We requested a room facing the pool. We were assigned a room which was on the backside facing the side of another resort. This was a BLESSING IN DISGUISE! Very little noise, allowing us to retreat from the noise of pool activities allowing us to relax when we wanted to. We will never request a room facing the pool again. Unless you want noise from about 6:30 a.m. and midnight...request a room on the backside. Very little noise and much more privacy. USE THE SAFE IN YOUR ROOM! First day we set up a test. I left $19.00 in my purse on a chair (no reason for anyone to move for cleaning). A ten, a five and four ones... The ten, five and two ones were folded in half. Two remaining ones were placed in two different directions, over the money. The purse is made of soft leather and placed a certain way in a chair. Two ones were taken when we returned hours later. Was it the maid or a supervisor? We don't know. We have no doubt that theft occurs at all resorts. Everything in safe was always undisturbed. GRATUITY: We recognize that gratuities are included in the "All Inclusive" price, but get real! The folks who work at these resorts are likely not paid well and work very hard. We left $5.00 on the bed each day. Our room was CLEANED and RESTOCKED each day. We left anywhere from $1.00 to $5.00 at our table at the buffet. The amount depended on whether the server was attentive to our drink needs such as coffee, milk, etc. Restaurants we left $5.00 to $10.00. Bartenders and poolside ladies who delivered drinks $1.00 per drink. I will say that it was difficult to leave anything at the buffet/bar near the ocean beach. The bartenders ignore women. Good luck finding a glass for water. HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE treatment by staff and bartenders, even when tipping. My advice looking back is to tip ONLY if you are treated well by bartenders and servers. ENTERTAINMENT: Entertainment at the pool during the day is exceptional. The ladies and gentlemen who provided the daytime entertainment are awesome! For evening entertainment we were truly impressed one evening with a group of ladies and gentlemen who performed/danced to music. Beautiful costumes, choreographing and very professional. OCEAN/BEACH and POOL: If you're not out there putting a towel on a chair by 6:00 a.m., you will NOT have a chair. We went out to pool at 4:00 a.m. to secure a lounge chair and tons of others were out there too. Spend the morning at the pool and the afternoon at the beach. The early beach goer's get their fill by noon. Best of both worlds. The beach is TOO CROWDED for the number of people at the resort. That was a BUMMER! RESTAURANTS: The restaurants and employee's at the restaurant's are a 10! Five Stars! Every single one! The food and service is beyond any reasonable expectation one may have. I am terrible with names but remember one employee named Edwin (like my grandfather) at MEAT who was exceptional. Every single employee was exceptional. Excellent! 5 Stars. Main buffet is very good but cheerful service is spotty. Tip accordingly but DO tip if they are attentive! Don't play "rich tourist" too cheap to leave a few bucks (because...it's "All Inclusive"). RESERVATIONS: The folks at this resort will make your reservations so you don't miss out. Just ask them or email prior to your trip. WOULD WE RETURN? We would NOT return to this resort because: 1. The walk to the beach is TOO FAR. 2. The beach is too crowded. 3. CHILDREN are allowed to play at the beach in the adult area. 4. The majority of employee's at the beach buffet and bar are exceptionally rude and seem to pride themselves in being nasty which is really awful. 5. Beach is DIRTY and littered with cigarette butts and glasses. Few ashtrays so butts are in the sand! The Caribbean Beach is WHY most of us visit the Caribbean. This resort has put the wrong people in charge of the beach, beach bar and buffet dining. I'd FIRE EVERY ONE OF THEM STARTING WITH THE MANAGER AND SUPERVISOR'S WHO SET THE EXAMPLE. If you can't find a spot at the beach and reasonably enjoy the buffet and bar at the beach, there's no reason to go to this resort. So much for adult only! CHILDREN ON THE CROWDED BEACH FOR HOURS! We will not return to this resort.

Great 40th Birthday Destination

Great service, Pasquel at the Beach Bar, Maria at the Breakfast Buffet, and Willy at the pool are fabulous. Advice: See if you can reserve dinner at resort restaurants prior to arrival if possible. My group of ten couldn't and ended up with 9pm reservations most nights. This resort is for an older crowd so pools close at 6ish, but there is plenty of fun still to be had. Bring a speaker for nights at the beach, it is empty and just waiting for an impromptu dance party. We enjoyed the beach bar in the early morning hours (it's open all night) and late night rides on the tram. There is a big push for sales at this resort. They try to make you attend appointments and presentations for exclusive clubs and excursions by calling your room at 8am and slipping reminders for appointments they made for you under your door. We opted not to attend any of these and met with Alexis at the pool to arrange our excursions. That way we could drink, swim and discuss poolside instead of sitting in the lobby. All in all it was a great trip!

A perfect getaway with best friends

This was a surprise birthday present for a friend and we have to say the entire trip was fabulous! The transportation from the airport, the check in with the wonderful frozen drinks, and seeing the resort for the first time was amazing. The rooms were absolutely gorgeous and it was great we were all near each other. The tram around the resort was so convenient and the fitness facility, pool and beach was great. Drinks available anywhere you went - with just the sweetest staff in the world. Oh and the breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets were perfect - suited everyone's desires every time. We always felt very welcome and safe -- and the weather---just perfect-- day and night. Definitely a trip we'd do again!
