Had a wonderful time!!

My wife and I just came back from Dreams Palm Beach (DPB). We stayed there a week. I mentioned on the initial reservation that we were celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary. We checked in with no problem. The lobby of the resort was gorgeous. Open area with couches, bars, etc. We got to our room and there was a banner outside our door commemorating our anniversary. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Everyone was very courteous and always greeted us with “Hola.” Our room was quaint. However, it did need renovation as the concierge did indicate the resort would be undergoing in the next year. (To shed some light on this, we stayed in the Deluxe Tropical View. We didn’t upgrade to Preferred Club status). The food within the restaurants was very good. We didn’t get a chance to dine at Bordeaux. Portifino was awesome. We got to chatting up a waiter there, Nelson, who made the night special and gave us ideas on what other things we should do while at the resort. After a while, we decided to just frequent the World Café only. They had an array of choices and you never ate the same thing twice. We frequented the beach a lot. If you do go, make sure you get there early as the chairs and best spots are gobbled up fast. The beach is open to the public. This means there are SEVERAL vendors always trying to hawk their wares to you. Anything from excursions, jewelry, artwork, coconut water, massages, etc. If you politely decline them, they’ll move on. Some you’ll need to take a firmer route, just make sure you’re respectful when doing so. We did a lot of excursions via the resort. But I’ll talk about the three that stood out. We went into town to learn about how they make cigars, chocolate, rum and coffee. You get to sample some each of these items in addition to purchasing some as souvenirs. There’s a drink that’s called Mammajuana; the locals have dubbed this the Baby Maker. You can’t miss it as it’s all over. Make you’re you try it and bring some home. You can reuse the bottle for up to 5 years and create your own version at home. We did the all day Saona VIP trip. You get to ride the sea on a catamaran, dip into the natural pool and enjoy the sea life. The water was so clear and pristine. And then you’re treated to a lobster lunch on the island after which you have a few hours to frolic on the beach. You then head back to shore on a speedboat. Our host, Jose, was a fantastic tour guide. He gave so much background on the history of the Dominican Republic (DR) and talked about its current state. Lastly, my wife and I had a romantic candlelight dinner on the beach at night. This was great. The ambiance, weather and food were all spectacular. The view of the ocean at night with the moon shining down was so picturesque. The service was amazing during the dinner. We got to know the staff at the resort quite well. Make sure you get to know Sergio, Joel, and Yeradlin. They were our contacts for all the assistance we needed throughout our stay. The resort had a beach party night which was pretty cool. The entertainment staff of the resort hosted it. They played island music interspersed with some American songs that set the night right. People were dancing and drinking and having a good time. The only jacked up thing about that was a little difficult to appreciate it fully with toddlers on the dance “floor.” But you manage. The only other downside, other than the condition of the room, was the timeshare spiel when you first arrive. If you’re interested in it or just want the $100 prize you receive afterward that you can put toward any excursions, then go ahead and attend. If you do, it lasts about 90 minutes and it’s normally done during breakfast the day following your arrival. Due note, you’re be introduced to MANY different people (layers) that will still try to close you even after you’ve said no. It’s more of a nuisance than anything but they do warn you ahead of time of what’s in store. All in all, we had a fabulous time and would definitely go back especially once the renovations are completed.

Disappointment

Although the service at this resort was excellent- the overall trip was definitely not as great as we had hoped. Initially when we checked in we were given a concierge and they had tried to make us go to a 90 minute timeshare presentation explaining how to book directly with the resort for future vacations. Seeing as we didn’t pay a lower cost in order to go through a timeshare presentation, we were not thrilled with them pushing this on us. Also, they made it very clear that they don’t value cheap carribean vacationers because they are not “preferred members” (preferred members book directly within the resort) and the rooms were very old, no doors in the bathrooms, and the air conditioner barely worked. The beaches were probably the worst of all- the amount of garbage and seaweed that was surrounding the resort was awful- it made it nearly impossible to walk the beaches at all. I have been on vacations domestically in the US and the beaches were much, much cleaner. It’s sad to say that this was our honeymoon and although we weren’t terribly disappointed we had certainly hoped for a better resort and will definitely do more research the next time booking any carribean resort.

Okay, upsell tactics, slow service. Filthy beach

What can i say, beach was very dirty, food was so so, at all restauraunts. You must tip for good service, bring lots of dollors Room, which was just remodeled smelled like mold amd mildew. All in all i would say 208. A night is to much for this resort. I even upgraded to preferred club for another 50 per night which was a joke. Dont do it, not worth it at all. Would i stay here again, possibly for 150 a night or less, but at 260 a night there are better places with cleaner beaches.

Not great

Overall the trip was ok, and the resort was nice. The food was definitely sub-par, and most of the party I was there with left with digestive issues (diarrhea). Most of the staff was very helpful, especially the bartenders who were fun and very responsive. Waiter were a bit slow, but not terrible. The VIP club people are a whole other story though. Apparently the resort loops you into siting through a timeshare-esque presentation. AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS! The contract people were great, because they reviewed the contract in detail, but that was when we found out that the sales people were lying through their teeth. The first room we were given had a view of trash and old run-down equipment used for landscaping, and the toilet was completely non-functioning. It took a ridiculous amount of arguing to get a different room, and about 5 hours of time spent in our room while the maintenance people were working on the toilet. This went late into the night when we wanted to go to bed but couldn't. After all of that, the toilet still didn't work. After having the first two days of the trip wasted, everything else was good.
