trip was son's gift for graduating college

Just returned from Sunscape on June 19th. Let me start off with the staff, they were outstanding and very friendly. i would like to personally thank again the staff at the pool bar (Simon, Carlos, Frank and Oscar). they were very professional and all had a great sense of humor. i spent a lot of hours there and no matter how busy it got they remained professional. thank you again Gentlemen. i read some reviews before booking this resort, with concerns of the locals allowed on the resort. we got there Friday around noon and i spent Friday and Saturday at the pool bar with the locals. though i do not speak a lick of Spanish i had a great time hanging out with them. if you arrive on days they are on the resort i recommend you sit at the pool bar with them. they are some of the nicest people i met. i would also like to thank the team at the pizza shop. they would make you a pizza with whatever toppings you wanted, wrap it up on the plate so you would have a nice snack in your room that night. As for the other food i would recommend the Italian restaurant for the lasagna, the Asian restaurant for the rice bowl with chicken. Windows buffet also met our hunger needs every morning for breakfast. Our room was very clean (room 10219). we did have an issue the first day with the air conditioning and the lights but we did not know that our one room key needed to stay plugged in to the box next to the door. we would stick out key in, the light would turn green but then 10 minutes later everything would cut out. once my son figured out that the key needed to stay in the box everything worked great. i talked with people staying in others rooms and they did not have this issue. the ocean was very nice and the Chef that works at the restaurant on the beach put out an amazing looking spread. the shows were very really good and entertaining. they even had karaoke the first night. i know can take off my bucket list karaoking Grand Master Flash's "the message" in the Dominic. they also had a magician one night who was awesome. i made friends with the guy in the audience that assisted him and this guy told me "i was right there with him and could not figure out his tricks". i know this review was kind of long but i wanted to let everyone know that this is a nice small resort where the staff will treat you very well and you will meet some very friendly people from around the world. shot out to the Altoona old heads, Mafia Bob, Ohio Bob, sisters from Toronto, NJ Andy and Anthony..... thank you again Sunscape resort for making my sons graduation from college trip such a wonderful time...........

Definitely worth the money

I will start by saying after reading reviews online I decided to do the Sun Club upgrade. I emailed the hotel and it was taken care of. I asked to be sure we had 2 double beds instead of a King. There was my 2 daughters 23 and 19, and myself. To my surprise when we got in our room there was 3 double beds. That was a great surprise. We were on the first floor which I liked because we were right near the private pool, Sun Club Lounge. When we arrived it was raining, we decided to check out the spa. They had some great reasonable specials. We spent the first afternoon there and then it cleared up after we left the spa. The beach was beautiful; as well as the pools. Lunch and dinner were very good and we only had a wait one night for about 45 minutes for the Asian restaurant. The workers were all polite and very friendly. Housekeeping was always spot on....our cleaner made sure we always had 3 clean towels. The mini fridge was always stocked, we only drank a few waters because the Sun Club bar was so close. I also enjoyed the coffee shop every morning. My daughters are not early birds so I would go there with my Ipad and do a little work and have coffee. The only items that I was disappointed with was breakfast at the buffet. I could not find anything that I really enjoyed. It came down to the oats. The other disappointing items were the hagglers on the beach were quite relentless and we were in the private roped off area. They never stopped bothering you. On the weekends locals are allowed to use the facility. That was the reason for the Sun Club upgrade, when I read about the on the another review I knew I had to upgrade. it was definitely worth the money and I would go back for a 4-5 night trip.

Sunscape Scoop!

We just returned from a 5 day stay at Sunscape in Puerto Plata. There were some hectic parts in the beginning so this review is aimed to help all of you have a smoother time! ~ I highly recommend arranging your transport to the resort ahead of time. As soon as you get through customs, there will be a swarm of people trying to get you to choose them as your transportation. It was a little bit hectic and in the end because we were in a group of people, we ended up paying a lot more than we should have because we just wanted to leave the swarm. We pre arranged our transport back to the airport and paid less than half of what we paid the initial time. ~ as soon as you arrive to the resort, just follow their instruction for check in. They are not going to allow you to try to skip all the concierge advertisements, so just smile, listen to their spill, and wait for your room to be ready. Just come with the knowledge that they will be trying to upsell you on everything. If you’re ready for it, you won’t get stressed out. ~ they will try to present the Sunclub VIP upgrade to you. We participated in this with our group, which ends up being an extra set fee per day/per room. It was not worth it. All these extra things were promised like extra pillows, turn down service, better WiFi. We didn’t get any of that. It does give you access to a couple small private little spa pools with advertised top shelf alcohol. Both times we tried it, they were out of all the advertised top shelf alcohol. In the end we spent all of our time at the public pool and had a great experience without the VIP card. ~ the resort itself is absolutely gorgeous. Multiple pools, many bars, lots of restaurants. They take extremely good care of the maintenance of the property. You will see employees 24/7 maintaining the plants and the pools. There is an entertainment section near the biggest pool, and every night they had live music, Dominican dancers, etc. There was never a lack of something to do. They also have a gift shop section where you can purchase souvenirs and such. Something to remember about the gift shops: there is a locals market about a five minute walk from the resort. Still in the safety of all the resorts, not out to the main road. This market sells all the same items as the resort gift shops (actually more selection) but the prices were better and usually negotiable. ~ the beach! Absolutely beautiful, sand was soft and amazing. Just be prepared for the hustle. What I mean by that is, everyone in DR is just trying to make their living. They’re all going to approach you and try to make some money. If you go to the beach prepared for this, it won’t bother you. Generally a simple “no thank you” is enough for them to move on to the next person, unless you’re looking to purchase what they’re selling. On the beach is access to free water activities included with the resort fee as well as upgraded activities. ~ the food. There are lots of choices but not all of them are open at the same time. I recommend walking around and trying it all at different times. The buffets are great because you have the opportunity to taste lots of different Dominican specialties! ~ the bars. Definitely bring your own YETI cups! They will fill whatever cups you hand them. If you don’t, you’ll constantly be getting refills because the cups they serve are about 4-6 ounces big. ~ the rooms. When you first arrive, in case they don’t explain it to you, the room AC will not kick on until you put your room key in the designated spot and leave it there. The WiFi is spotty, dependent on your room and where you are in your room. The beds have a very thin sheet and one thin blanket in the closet. If you get cold I recommend bringing a blanket. The bed and pillow itself is not very comfortable, so if you have room I definitely recommend bringing your own comfy pillow! Overall, we had a great experience. The pool, music, sunshine, swim up bars....exactly what we came there looking for! Hopefully these little tips will help your trip to be as enjoyable as possible! Also, side note. If you have the chance to look into the waterfall excursion, 100% recommend!!! It was our favorite thing we did while in DR.

Great resort if.......

This would be a great resort if the RCI folks would not badger you when you first come in off the plane! They actually have the nerve to pester you as soon as you arrive for check in then the following day they promise to take only 90 minutes of your time for their sales pitch with their gift of a spa package. Over two hours later and still no idea what the cost is for their promotion, I got up from my seat and told them I was catching the first plane back home and to not bother me anymore. Been their almost two days before we finally made it to the beach. They still offered us a free gift package, but told them to keep it, we did not want any part of it. As a resort it was very nice with beautiful beaches, friendly staff and plenty of activities. The dining was great, lots of bars and great entertainment. The grounds were very nice and kept, nothing but native and old growth trees and vegetation, very beautiful. The rooms were very comfortable and well kept and clean by housekeeping services. Other than the badgering by RCI, I would recommend this resort to friends.
