Sunscape Puerto Plata
Sunscape is an affordable option when visiting puerto Plata. I have been staying in several all inclusive resort around the area and in my opinion this resort has the best food options. However the internet is very limited and you will constantly see people hanging around the pools to get some internet. The room is outdated but serves its purpose. We were given a room with 2 beds instead of a 1 king bed but the hotel was helpful enough to move the beds together.
The beach is clean and the water is calm. We walked around the beach for 5 miles and always felt safe.
Overall the entertainment is good but every single day someone is going to try to sell you something: 1) $25 meal or 2) massage or 3) sunscape packages.
Finally we bought a sunscreen and the cost was $30 which is a crazy amount for that. I don’t believe we will stay here again but i see this as an alternative for a smaller budget and will recommend it if the decision is based on budget.
Got this resort on Deal of The Day. Resort is small and 75% empty this time of the year. Customer service is great but resort is lacking during the week. Food is just recycled from the previous day with just a different sauce on it. Never restocked fridge even after making request. Just 2 beers and 2 sodas. Place starts to fill up on the weekend as locals come in. Probably wouldn’t go here again.
From the moment we arrived to the last goodbyes, the service was excellent. The staff was warm, friendly and enjoyable. Always with a smile and laughs, willing to joke with us.
Resort was beautiful with easy access to all we wanted.
We were sad to leave. Would definitely go back.
I say I have mixed feelings because this is a beautiful resort but being that I was told it was "down time" there wasn't many people at the resort which also made it very quiet and then a lot of the restaurants weren't open due to it being so little bit of people the food that we had was cold it wasn't really all that but once again I will stress that this is a very nice resort the service was impeccable Might I add I believe if they change the food options all will be happy

are all food and drinks included in the price?10 answers

pittsburgh
Yes, all your food and drinks would be included in the price paid.
SalCC
All food and drinks were included and that included a very nice Italian restaurant. They have one red and one white wine to serve, but the mixed drinks seemed to be unending. If you want a better wine, the hotel gives you coupons for $10 off the price of a bottle.
One small café is open 24 hours.
Tiok
They are all included. There's only one restaurant off limits which is for Sun Club members. Other than that you have plenty of options.
Elly79

LoccaTraveller
Yes and it is very good!
TravelingBells
All food included. We expected some items on menu to have cost, but it did not. All drinks free (unless you don't want the stock brand). The house wines (included) were very acceptable, from Spain
doogiebklyn
Yes, all drinks and food are included. No reservation required to eat at their restaurants that specialize in different cuisines, but you have to dress casual.

Are all the restaurants included in the price? Any specific perks for sun club members? And if you pay the sun club member price are you guaranteed5 answers
If you pay the sun club member price are you guaranteed a better view?

Yes, all the restaurants are included. The sun club members get the following perks: Personalized check-in and checkout with concierge service, Preferential status and amenities, Upgraded mini-bar service (refreshed daily) and bath amenities, Complimentary computer access in the Sun Club Lounge, Daily afternoon hot and cold hor d'oeuvres, Complimentary newspaper in room every day (English or Spanish), Cartoons available in room, Milk, cookies and other special treats and Room service (7am-11pm). A better view may be requested while booking.
SalCC
All restaurants are included in the price, We were with a couple who were sunclub members and they had top shelf liquor. I would recommend it because they give you all the cheap alcohol when its an all inclusive
vandg4ever
All restaurants were included. We stayed in building 10, right next to the pool, but we're moved later in the week to the Sun Club. We actually preferred the first room, it was more centrally located, in the middle of the action. The Sun Club does have a small private pool, as well as its own bar, but was too quiet for us. The views at each were of a pool, we just preferred the more active one.
Whalengordon
yes all inclusives
Ahma
The sunclub includes private check in, access to sunclub pools, lobby and bar, wifi and safe. The rooms are garden or pool view as far as I know. I've only stayed in sun club since it became Sunscape. Prior to that, it was Barcelo and we stayed in a standard room. I'm not sure if there are any true ocean view here.
Check with the room specifics- each has a list. Either room type
Is probably fine depending on your needs.

Is there a night club at this resort9 answers
3 years, 46 months ago
dolly
The resort has a few bars open late, but they may not be considered a night club. Please check with the resort directly for the most up to date information.
TimCC
There are at least four bars located throughout the lobby and restaurant areas. And there is a stage with entertainment for all and a small casino as well as a piano player on some nights. But there isn't a night club per se. The entire lobby and restaurant/pool area seemed a bit like a night club.
Tiok
They're is a restaurant down near the beach that turns into a nightclub/bar nightly.
Elly79
At night they open a small outdoor area for dancing from 11pm until 2am. There is a DJ playing music, a few colorful lights, and a bar serving drinks.
elisabeth109
More like a beach bar with music
Unhappy916
Not a typical night club per say. There is a DJ and dancing at Castaways, the restaurant at the beach. This is daily, after the show in the theater, around 10:30 I believe.
Whalengordon
Yes. At the beach/Castaways restaurant. Mostly bachata, salsa, and merengue. Open 11p-2am I believe. -snack bar during the day, seafood restaurant in the evening, then discoteca.

Is the beach right next to resort or a long walk?10 answers
3 years, 46 months ago
USA
Depends on which building you stay in. If you want to be right next to the beach, ask for building 1 or 3.
Fgosfmom2
You can see the beach from the restaurants and pools. Very close.
Tiok
The beach is a bit of a walk from the resort, but nothing extreme. About 5-10 minutes, based on room location.
SalCC
The beach is very close.
elisabeth109
Hi, its 5 minutes walking from the main pool
ClaryChelo
The beach is a three to four minute walk from the main area, not very far at all.
Whalengordon
it is part of the resort. it may be a little "further" based on what room you're in, but it is not far.
Pincesa
Walk to beach is like 1-2 minutes depending on where your room is locate on the resort.
Kellzzzz
The beach is right on the resort but the view is not ocean view. Your room could be in several different buildings. Could take you 2 to 3 mins to slowly walk to it on the path depending on where you are. Partly being their is a bar / restaurant opening right to the beach you walk around or thru.
LoccaTraveller
It's not right there, but I just had a knee replacement and it was not too far...and it is paved the whole way!

I believe 7am to 11pm if you book a SunClub room. This is only a $50.00 per night upgrade. You get a private adult pool. To private clubs, one for family, (both with US alcohols) one for adults only, private beach lounging if wanted, private check in and check out and a few other perks. You can view on website. Was worth it to us. Especially once you see the checkout lines you get to skip or get concierge service on check in right inside your actual room and greeted with champagne.

sand is gray and there are 2 pools
IgorN
not white but not dirty! beach cleaned daily, 2 pools

JudiCee63
4 pools- one for Sun Club members, private, adults only; one for Sun Club members, private, families; one large pool with swim up bar and easy access entry, one for mostly little kids near the main lobby and restaurant.
Sand at the beach is tan colored-not the white you will find on the Caribbean sea; however, not far is a snorkeling area that is filled with that turquoise water and white sand. This resort is on the northern coast- Atlantic shoreline.

Is this a large resort with alot of walking? How is the water?
3 years, 43 months ago
CT
Th resort isn't small, it has 585 rooms and suites as well as 9 restaurants and 7 bars. However, you can certainly request your room be in whichever area of the resort you'd prefer to be closer to. This is on a request basis and cannot be guaranteed, but the resort does do their best to accommodate. As for the water, this resort is on one of the best beaches in Dominican Republic, and the expansive pool includes a swim up bar.
JeannieCC
average walking beach fairly calm and clean
armageddon
It's a very compact and well laid out resort for as much as it offers, so not too much walking, and easy flat walking
doogiebklyn
yes,it is a large resort, but the walking is managable

Not a large resort, easy to get to everything for anyone generally healthy. Water at beach is rough as it is the Atlantic Ocean, very windy in March at least.

Are guest passes available ?5 answers
I am meeting a friend in Puerto plata.
Can I have a guest to stay with me?
3 years, 42 months ago
Sherl
Resorts do generally have guest passes for purchase, for any pricing and restrictions, you would need to contact the resort directly. However, to have a guest stay in the room overnight, they would need to pay to stay as a guest in that room for however many nights they are staying.
JeannieCC
unknown? I,m sure for a fee it will happen
armageddon
There is no security from what I experienced. I was there a week and left through front gate twice a day and only once was I asked to sign out but not back in. Beach access was never questioned upon return
Gordo50
NO. YOU CAN HAVE DAY OR NIGHT PASS FOR CHEAP... UNLESS YOU PAY FOR THE STAY FOR THE PERSON. I HAD MY BROTHER IN LAW WITH ME FOR A DAY FRON 10:30AM -5:30PM DAY PASS AND I PAID $55.00

Noah2017
Yes.. and if you have a connecting flight back into the states, beware that you have get your luggage, and then get rechecked to get on the connecting flight - that means lots of extra time needed between the connecting flights, and also, if you buy liquor from the duty-free shop in DR, and carry it on, you WON'T be able to carry it on the connecting flight because you go through TSA again, and no liquids more than two ounces! Learned that the hard way - had to throw out a whole bottle of vodka!

Why do the flights for this resort fly into Santo Domingo instead of Puerto Plata?5 answers
Why do the flights for this resort fly into Santo Domingo instead of Puerto Plata? Puerto Plata airport is so much closer and transportation fees would be significantly less. So why do all the flights come up as going to and from STI?

Drinking at the resort without a wristband?5 answers
In a review it said they don't give out wristbands! How will we be able to drink without a wristband? Do we have to carry our ID's and passports??
2 years, 32 months ago
Wisconsin
This resort does not give out wristbands as they don't let non-guests on the property unless they have purchased a day pass. It is not required to carry around passports or ID's. At most, your room number may be asked.
JeannieCC
There are no wristbands because they are not needed. All the bars serve everyone. I don't know how they determine minimum drinking age but I did witness drinks being ordered by people of all ages. Drink of the day was a pre mix slush that you would be asked if you wanted alcohol. Non alcohol versions were served at all bars.
Chill0704
No wristband required! As a guest of the resort, you're good once you check in.
TejasGirl
No bracelets or ID required. Many of the locals in the area are seen on hotel property. The beach is NOT private so anyone can come onto the resort if they wish to.

Noshing any time your stomach hollers with 24-hour food/drink kiosks - healthy and kid-friendly.
Releasing your kiddos to the Explorer's Club (3-12) so they can burn off some energy with castle competitions, arts & crafts, and more.
Sending your 13-17 year-olds to the Core Zone so they can constructively channel their teen angst.
Cutting loose with dozens of land and water activities.
All taxes and gratuities are taken care of, too.
And so much more that won't fit into this bulleted list.
