I survived the Dominican Republic!

The DR has been getting so much bad press lately, we almost cancelled. I'm glad we didn't. It's a beautiful place with nice people I love the fact that you don't have all the people trying to peddle their wares like you do in other countries. Low pressure. Most of the guests at the resort spoke Spanish and came from South America to vacation, but this did not bother us. We could make our way fine. The staff spoke multiple languages and were very accommodating. The nightly shows were not very good, but we had fun attending them. Buffets and Japanese restaurant was good. We took tour of the waterfalls, which was amazing. The countryside is beautiful and not very commercialized, which we like. Hotel was easy to navigate. Staff was amazing, Food was good, and what you would expect at all inclusive. I had the best massage of my life on the beach. Good value for the money. Would definitely go back.

Back in time

Over all I really enjoyed the resort. I have been on more than a dozen cruises and this was my first all inclusive. It was set up to be perfect for my style of vacation. A lot of relaxing by the pool and the beach. The overall service was excellent. On our second day our waiter Domingo recognized us from the day before and asked us to sit in his section. He then brought us our very specific breakfast drinks. 2 Coke 0s a double espresso and a cappuccino without prompting. That was amazing and we received similar treatment from the bar staff in the Prestige Lounge and the Prestige Beach area. Avis in the Prestige lounge was an amazing and friendly bar tender. Marion in the Prestige beach area just made me feel more relaxed and helped me enjoy my vacation more. We did go to the Member sales pitch which any concierge will book for you when you ask for your resort credit. (which is really coupons) It was pretty high pressure. We decided to join for a not insubstantial 5 figure sum. They immediately upgrade us to a mini-suite with an ocean view. How ever after sleeping on it I decided it was not for me. I went in the next day and cancelled. They seemed disappointed but where still pleasant and polite. We liked the room view, the exclusive beach club, the Prestige lounge and the wider selection of premium alcohols we did upgrade to prestige for the stay for a small daily fee. The food was above average. I was there for two weeks and I think after the first week I would have rated it excellent. The buffet had a wide selection with plenty of meat, fish, fresh vegetables and fruits and assorted other choices. It is worth pointing out the Wednesday is Dominican night at the buffet and it was very popular. I was not thrilled with any of the cheese. It was all somewhere between flavorless and mild. But the was the biggest downer. The specialty restaurants were a neat idea. The Mediterranean Restaurant is outside in snack bar and was not the most comfortable. I was not thrilled with the entrees however the appetizer buffet was great, especially the shrimp and lasagna. The Mexican restaurant was not air conditioned and was not very authentic. The only cheese at the appetizer buffet was a large bowl of soupy nacho cheese. There were some god choices still and I thought the red and green salsa there were very good. We enjoyed the main course even while noting that it did not resemble any of the Mexican food we received and of the numerous we have been in Mexico. The Teppenyaki place was excellent. Air conditioned, great food and a great environment. Don't miss it! Here is my biggest complaint about the resort. I like most people am a non-smoker. The resort does not have any non-smoking areas in the resort except for the restaurants and shops. As an example, on Saturday there were about 300 people at the pool. Maybe 12 to 15 people were chain smoking and everyone else was trying to enjoy the pool. The problem was the smokers positioned themselves scattered throughout the pool area and the was one person or group about every 20 feet. Some in the pool smoking, some at the swim up bar smoking, and the others in the lounger area. Even with trying to avoid them as much as I could with out leaving the pool my lungs and eyes were burning and my throat was sore. I think that if they designated an area at one end of the pool as the smoking area the few people who did smoke would not have complained. This is where my back in time caption comes from. It was like the US in the late 80s. Everywhere you went you had to avoid people smoking. In Oregon I can go three months without even seeing someone smoke. It was gross, stinky, and made me feel sick with a scratchy throat and burning eyes. I could list example the entire time of different ways this derailed my vacation. It was an amazingly low minority of people who smoked but they were still pervasive. One more thing that bothered me but seems to be universal. The pool closed at 7:00 PM how ever it was frequently a sultry 90+ degrees at 9:00 pm or later and the pool would have been very nice. I think that we may try an all-inclusive again sometime but with out the smokers making me miserable I probably already would have booked my next vacation at Iberostar Puerto Plata.

Book it

Wonderful time. They keep the hotel, beach and pool very clean Great service with a smile. Very accommodating. Very friendly people.. Cheap Caribbean was prompt with answers to any questions or concerns My only complaint was the nightly shows. Tourist dont want to see American shows nor hear American songs being sung. We want to see Dominican dances and hear their happy lively music nightly. The shows were depressing with slow ,sad songs and people were walking out every night. The food was OK could use improvement. But overall the resort was very nice

Ok for the money

The hotel itself is beautiful , The service was Ok, nothing to impressed with ( the gentleman that works the back closest to the beach is a really nice guy and friendly ) The entertainment staff could use some help, I’ve stayed at other resorts in the Dominican including the iberiostar in laramana the interaction with the guest at these other resort was much better . The beach is beautiful but however at this time of the day you can’t even sit down there because the wind just whips you. The pool has a lot of holes in the bottom and is in need of repair . On the weekends the locals vacation there , they are very nice people But it gets very loud and not relaxing at all . I love children but it gets extremely loud and chaotic it’s almost sounds like you’re at a waterpark . Most of the music that they play there whether you’re by the pool or in the nightclub is all Spanish not very much of any other languages, usually in resorts like this there is a mix . Felix from AMStar was excellent he made sure we were informed with everything that was going on .

What's to Love

It's an all-inclusive relax-a-thon on the golden sands of Costa Dorado.

The Turkish bath, and hot stone massages at the stress-smashing spa.

Dropping off the kids at Lucy's Club (ages 4-12) - they draw & read while you play.

Golfing at the 18-hole Playa Dorada Beach & Golf Club that's five-minutes away.

What We'd Change

The guest rooms do not have Internet access, and there is a small fee for access in the hotel lobby. But who goes to Puerto Plata to work on the computer, anyway?

Why You Should Go

It's 20 minutes from the airport - your Dominican dream vacay will begin presto.

This place is all about water sports - kayaks, canoes, Hobie cats and more.

There's a casino for the riskier beach lovers.

For the land lovers, there's tennis, volleyball, a fitness room and more.
