Very good place

Just came back from six day trip to Costa Rica @ Riu Guanacaste. First, the hotel is about 45 minutes from Liberia airport - not bad at all. I had private transport by Amstar and they were awesome - very professional. The hotel location is very good - right on the beach with very large pool and well staffed pool bar. The employees at the pool try to make your time in pool interactive by various activities through out the day. Hard working crew. Rooms are great - majority of them (if not all) are atleast ocean view rooms. Nice sized rooms with good room service. I had my shower head not flowing well and the staff replaced the shower head the next morning. Plenty of alcohol (no extra charge) in the room. No food in the room though. I did not try room service so can not comment on that. Restaurants - I think this is where the hotel can do better. The food taste was average (may be slightly above average). But they are severely understaffed for waiters on their buffet area. They had 2 - 3 person staff for about 60 people capacity sitting area. The people assigned their area were very hard working - I did not see anyone standing or chatting with others. They were constantly working but still not able to keep up the demand. I felt sorry for them - especially when I saw some of them were doing over 12 hours shift. The hotel management needs to improve on getting some help there. I personally love to connect with my servers knowing about them and local community but it wasn't possible at the place as the workers did not have time to chat.Out of every all-inclusive resorts that I have visited so far, this was the first one where I saw under staffing. I must say that the staff always had smile on their face - even after such a heavy workload. I commend them for their commitment to make people feel that they are on vacation and they enjoy their time.. On the other hand, they have plenty of places for get a drink (bars) - the hotel did take care of people who wants to grab a drink without much walking. Loved the ice-cream corners. Had few scoops every day. For the water activities, walk out of the resort on the beach and make a deal with people out there - they are great and cheap compared to higher prices charged by people who are inside the hotel campus. There is not much difference in what you do but you pay a lot less. Overall, great friendly people who will go above and beyond to make sure you have great time, hotel management can do a little better but I would definitely recommend this place.

The grounds on this resort are beautiful. The hotel is a little dated but kept very clean. Very large resort, lots of walking. Food was pretty good. Asian restaurant was pretty good. Steak house was ok. Buffet was decent. Beds are very firm but after a long day in the sun or coming back from an excursion they were surprisingly comfortable. We were only given a wash cloth once which was odd bc we do tip the maids. Overall, you get a great deal w this resort. I would recommend. I would go back.

Girls Trip

We stayed for 5 days. The people at the property were very nice. My only issue was the specialty restaurants. We could never get into any of them. The way they have it set up on and first come first serve basis is inconsistent to the number of guests. They need to come up with a new system to ensure that all guest can enjoy all of the specialty restaurants. I've stayed at others places where reservations were set up prior to, to ensure that you are able to eat at the specialty restaurants. Lastly, The drinks were also weak, if its all inclusive, why were the bartenders acting as if they were paying for the liquor. I would prefer to have one strong drink then, having 4 drinks. But, overall the resort, pool and beach were great.

What's to Love

The all-inclusiveness: the food, the drinks, the everything.

No reservations needed at any of the restaurants.

Three sparkling pools, surrounded by lush greens keep you refreshed and cool. Pool side bars quench your thirst.

The liquor dispenser in the room lets you craft your own cocktail (soda water and mixers are stocked in the fridge.)

The beach isn't crowded and the tropical background adds to its peacefulness. Find your perch.

The stunner of a view with green lush landscapes and rolling mountains off in the distance - breathtaking.

Riu knows how to put on a show and the live entertainment day and night won't disappoint.

Some great rocks nearby for snorkeling - pack your own gear if you want to make sure you get a mask.

What We'd Change

The walk from the lobby to the pool doesn't offer much shade. Luckily, the pool's swim-up bar offers quick relief with ice-cold beer.

Why You Should Go

Riu is not far from the airport in Liberia - a quick 20 minutes to your tropical oasis.

A great spot for adventure-seeking tourists with excursions like Rincon Nature Park and the Safari Park nearby.

The beachy tan sands are sometimes rocky under the water - just grab shoes to wear & you'll be set.

Laid-back Costa Rican resort with lots to experience in the area - unique foliage and wild life add to the charm.

Much-needed spa time lets you get uber relaxed - massages, steam baths, facials in tropical paradise.

Activities galore - tennis, ping pong, beach volleyball, windsurfing, kayaks, paddle boards. Game on.
