Great Resort

We enjoyed our trip. The room was fantastic. enjoyed the upgrade very much!! Food was plentiful. Lots of carbs though. Glad they had plenty of fruit. Very clean. People who work there are wonderful. Only two recommendations.....get a bigger ironing board in rooms and you need a swim up bar. Other than that it was great!!!

Beautiful Resort but Food is Terrible

This resort is beautiful. The landscaping, the large pool, the vicinity to an amazing beach. Howler monkeys frequently visited the pool area. Lots of Iguanas of various colors and sizes running about. It is a shame that the food was very very bad. The meat was chewy and bland. The vegetables are over cooked. The desserts, while very pretty looking, all taste the same. We walked into town for dinner the last few days due to the poor quality. We also could not get a reservation at the Ala Carte Restaurant despite qualifying for 2 nights there. We were told, sorry, all booked. I guess so since the buffet food is awful. The bar food for lunch was no better. Dry hamburgers, shriveled up hot dogs, greasy fries and onion rings. Fresh fruit was available, the only positive. The resort also does not have a free shuttle into Tamarindo. It is $5.00 each way. We could not get the driver to pick us up from town the first night. He never showed up, so we walked the 20 minute walk and continued to do so there and back after the first night. The wifi is not free either. I did use the Spa services for the reflexology massage and the after-sun facial. Both very good and I would recommend. This place has the potential to be top-notch, but they really need to step it up with regards to the food and some basic amenities that most tourists want, like free shuttle and wifi.

Our own little piece of paradise

The beach was my favorite place. It changed throughout the day based on the tide but it was always beautiful and the water warm and fun to play in. The room was nice and we had a little patio where we could sip coffee and tea and watch the iguanas, hummingbirds and butterflies. The resort was quiet and laid back which was just what we needed. A quick walk into town for restaurants, yoga studios and shopping was a great way to spend the evenings. Take the Anteres sunset sailing cruise! Amazing! Dinner is buffet style and so a little repetitive which I expected . Plenty of restaurants in Tamarindo though to try which broke it up nicely throughout our week. We will be back for sure

Occidental Tamarindo (Costa Rica) Evaluation

• Hotel o We had requested first floor rooms because we had people in our group who had difficulty with stairs. We ended up with second story and fifth story rooms in a building with an elevator. The fifth-floor room could only be accessed via a long narrow stairway from the fourth floor. Hotel management did rectify that problem. It still left us with somewhat long walks to main areas, dining, pool, beach, etc. o Most of the staff had problems with English comprehension and appeared tentative in their positions o Hotel regularly loses power, multiple times on some days o Were not informed that we had to leave a key in a slot by the door to prevent power from turning off o On one occasion, all the room cards failed to work after one week (we were booked for ten days). Since the clerk at the desk asked when our check out was, I assume the resort had checked us out • Room o Room needed serious upgrading o Hair dryer did not work o Shower/tub drained poorly creating a serious fall potential o The toilet area appeared to have received very minimal cleaning with hair and other assorted items around it on the floor o Tub had several chunks of porcelain enamel knocked out o Shower area included three containers attached to the wall. None of the containers were marked to indicate what was in them o Drapes over the sliding door did not slide well and were partially failing o The sliding door did not lock even though there is a note on it reminding people to lock it o The room safes are awkward to use in their present locations o The bottom sheet on the bed did not fit the mattress • Dining o The buffet is adequate with breakfast being the best of the group o Staff, although pleasant, always appeared hurried o Often, they nearly bumped into guests as they walked through the dining area o We were not informed that we had access to the ala carte restaurant every three days as part of our all-inclusive package. Learned it from another guest while standing in the buffet line. Once aware of it, we made three reservations for the ala carte restaurant. The first two visits were greeted with a list of items not available that evening. Our third visit was scheduled for our last night on the property. We had our reservation slip, but the restaurant had no reservation on their books. Short version: they told us to leave, that they could not accommodate us. The manager would not meet with us but sent a member of the wait staff to “throw us out”. • Property o Pool and seating around the pool was more than adequate for the number of people o The beach is a bit of a walk to a very rough sea with very strong undertows o Great beach for surfers o The grounds of the property are clean, well-manicured and well maintained o If you are in one of the upper buildings, the only access to them is staircases or somewhat steep slopes along the garden paths. One member tripped and fell when her foot caught the edge of a drainage grate • Entertainment o The resort does a good job of providing and drawing people into activities each day o The shows in the evening are entertaining and varied
