Fabulous Time!

My boyfriend and I went for our anniversary and had a great experience. The check-in process was very easy. We were there at like 1pm and they held our bags while we waited and ate. The Bahamian employees are very humble and kind. Our room was very clean and well stocked with towels and refreshments in the fridge. My only gripe about the room was one of the blankets was stained. I could tell the blanket had been washed a few times and the stain wasn't fresh but come on! 2 huge stains on the blanket of the hotel is not cool.!! Other than that when I put a card on the blanket they exchanged it. I just felt I shouldn't have to have done that. Overall, the resort is clean, especially the bathrooms!! The indoor and outdoor bathrooms (even by the pool) are really well kept! The food at the buffet was tasty. The restaurants were good but we only got to go to Aqua (Italian) and Cilantro (Mexican). We really enjoyed both. We didn't get to try The Grille but I heard it was good. The only restaurant that is not inclusive is the Steakhouse. At the buffet, there was salad, soup, desserts, and various stews and meats and cheeses and crackers. For breakfast, the buffet has people there to make omelets for you and at lunch, someone can make you on the spot pasta dishes. They had a latin night, karaoke nights and a band that was really good. The pool bar closes around 6-7 pm but I saw people in the pool afterward. The beach is beautiful. The water was so clear and a Caribbean blue color. They offer paddle boarding and snorkeling (we didn't do that though) and Jet Ski options (which we did and it was fun!!!) but you have to pay for that. Personally, I would recommend this resort to anyone looking to go to Nassau. The housekeepers were nice, the women at the buffet and the bartenders at the pool bar had great conversation and service. On Sunday they filled the pool with foam/ bubbles for their pool party which was amazing. They only do that once a week though. We had a great time there and would definitely go back.

Nice resort

My husband and I stayed at Melia in October for one week from a Saturday to a Sunday while we waited for our US visas to be processed at the embassy. The big excitement was that some buildings next door were being imploded to make way for a water park. This was handled very well with clearly uniformed external contractors working to clear away all the beach chairs and Melia staff preventing people from going outside, then the contractors cleaning and setting up the chairs again. It was very efficiently done. At the same time half of the resort was being updated so it was very quiet and there was no trouble booking dinners nor finding beach chairs in the shade. The negatives of this resort were that tipping was very much the norm so you had to carry around money and constantly ask at the front desk for singles. I was prepared to tip the housekeepers but was taken by surprise when I saw people tipping the bartenders and leaving a couple of bucks under their plate after meals. People were even tipping at the swim up bar! Maybe they had money in their cigarette packets, I don’t know! There were definitely wet singles set out to dry along the back of the bar sometimes. Maybe people also tipped at Breezes when I was there 2yrs ago and I was oblivious. I have also stayed at Sandals where they repeatedly tell you not to tip. When I stay at an All Inclusive resort I don’t expect to carry anything other than a book and room key (until the day they start using keypads or scannable wrist bands and dispense with keys:-) We didn’t take our kids but what I heard about the kids club made me think our kids wouldn’t have enjoyed it much. It sounds as if it’s a good place to drop your kids for a couple of hours to do crafts indoors. There was a small grassy fenced area but no outside toys. As far as I could tell there were no activities or music by the family pool. This is just what I heard and may have been due to the fact that there were about 8 kids total at the resort that week! The evening entertainment wasn’t very good. A DJ played from 10pm-12am but before that wasn’t much. One night a guy went and got a speaker and his phone so we could keep dancing past midnight. The resort was very quiet and you need a certain number of people to inject life and energy into activities so I understand that’s not the resorts fault. What they need is an entertainment team. One person in costume does not a retro night make. We were there for 2 karaoke nights. One coincided with a wedding party and a work conference so there were people who sang but the other was too quiet. The lady running it did a good job but if she had turned the screen around and run it as a group sing-a-long it would have been a lot of fun. Some days they had music by the adult pool and some days not. On Sunday they filled the pool with foam which was amazing. They should do that twice per week tho because not everyone stays a full week. The positives outweigh the negatives by far. The resort was clean, bed was comfy and food was tasty. We had to say our room number to borrow beach towels but we could borrow two each (we never asked for more than that) and return them in the morning. At Breezes you had to return them by 6pm which meant walking to your room wet. This resort has a row of rocks far out in the water that seems to break the roughness of the water. We swam everyday because we are Australian and grew up with large waves and are comfortable with the ocean, even though a few days were quite rough. At Breezes and Sandals there were many days we weren’t allowed on the ocean at all. We thought the food was good. We did not like the O’Grill so we ate lunch at the buffet. The problem is that you can’t get lunch to go and eat on the beach, nor can you eat in swimwear. We figured if we were carrying t-shirt/swim cover to wear at the not very good O’Grill we might as well just go to the buffet which has an outdoor area. The lamb, pork and ham at the buffet were fantastic. There was salad, soup, desserts and various stews and meats and cheeses and crackers. For breakfast the buffet has the usual but also people there to make omelets for you which were huge. Finally on the last day my hubby and I got just one to share. The fruit was melons, oranges, grapefruit and kiwi. (At Breezes it was tinned pears and apricots and at Sandals it was a gigantic table of fresh fruit incl berries and mango). The service varied. We were always seated promptly but often had to flag someone down to get drinks. The Mexican restaurant had yummy tacos and queso fundido but I didn’t think much of the mains. The Japanese was rolls which were nice and the teppanyaki/hibachi was tasty but there was no show. Maybe that’s because the resort was half closed for construction. The tapas bar was burgers! I was so disappointed! It is a beautiful space and I was so looking forward to sipping wine and eating tapas and being in the center of all the (minimal) action and the menu was burgers! Well, we had the cheese and meat plates and nachos so there was more than just burgers but that was the main option. The big surprise was the Italian restaurant. I wasn’t going to go there at all because we live in an old Italian neighborhood but it turned out to be the best food. Everything we ate there was amazing. Since this is a similar price to Breezes I would absolutely choose Melia over Breezes. The service, food and beach are much better (even the wristbands are better). However Breezes has good evening entertainment. Sandals is by far the best for food and entertainment but the difference between Melia and Sandals is smaller than the difference between Breezes and Sandals. All the staff at Melia were friendly whether we were tipping or not but all inclusive hotels really ought to pay their waitstaff enough to stop them having discussions with guests about how poorly they’re paid and how much they need tips and how so many guests don’t realize they need to tip! Tipping is uniquely American so I don’t expect to need to do it outside America.

Worth the upgrade

For the price I this trip I would highly recommend. When we arrived we upgraded to the Level for better service and the private beach. We weren’t able to upgrade the first day and the service was just okay. Once we upgraded service was amazing and you had access to private beach and top shelf alcohol. Worth the upgrade! I would go back for sure. All the bartenders and waitstaff were AMAZING! The room smelt a little musty but overall not the worst.

Great Getaway!

The Melia resort is very clean and comfortable. The rooms had everything we needed, and when I wanted some extra beverages, I had someone at my door in less than 10 minutes. There was a good choice of restaurants, although not everything on every menu was included in the Inclusive Plan, which I haven't run into anywhere else. The specialty restaurants aren't open every night, and reservations are suggested. I highly recommend the Cilantro restaurant - the beef fajitas are awesome and allowed me to stay on my Keto plan. The beach area is small but adequate and there are plenty of lounge chairs. The pools were very clean and the hot tub was one of our favorite spots to relax. The hours of the pool bar could have been longer, but the service was great. We did arrive the day after they took down the hotel next door (they're making it into a water park we heard) which was a good thing as we heard lots of complaints from people who had no idea it was going to happen, and woke up at 7:00 AM to the sound of explosions! Perhaps more communication?? The Majestic Tours travel agent on Level 2 is amazing - she went the extra mile for us more than once.
