Nice Stay, but needs improvement

The staff at the Melia are phenomenal, and in the last 4 years they have made some improvements. They added 3 restaurants and a bar. The process to get reservations for the restaurants is kludge, you have to go the lobby, wait in line pick for the next 2 days and come back to see if you get in. I was told I could email, but when I arrived I was told, the email was down. The Japanese restaurant was amazing, Aqua was fair, but Cilantro was was not good at all. Food was warm, not hot, desserts were flavorless, and the guac was poor. Buffet is great, so is the Grille, and Estivida. Activities staff were great, and the mixology class was super fun. Rooms definitely need to he updated to get this hotel to the next level. Definitely worth the money, and I would go back again.

Awful!

Unless you are a college student, don’t stay here! This place is a constant frat party. So loud with music we had to call front desk two nights in a row, after 12 midnight to ask that they stop band from playing which was being broadcast on outside loud speakers! Impossible to sleep. Sounded like a 24 hr a day rock concert. Lobby hot, very crowded, very noisy. Rude staff. Narrow hallways such that one person has to step aside for the other to pass. Broken elevators. Literally 5 or more minutes to walk from our rooms to the only working elevator down extremely long hallways! You are given string bands to wear showing you are a guest. If you lose it you are charged $200 for a new one! Must wear these to eat on the property or for any amenities. Must use your room key card to operate elevator to get to your floor! Have no idea why as stairways are fully accessible to anyone! You cannot get off elevator to any other floor except your own. Extremely frustrating and inconvenient! Food not great. Old dark carpet, cracked walls. Would never stay again!!!!!!

Not my favorite

I will say as a whole the resort is a good value for the price that you were paying . We weren’t able to get a room until 530 arriving at 4 pm. The room was tired and had no air condition. Many room changes. Long maze like hallways and one elevator!! We took the stairs often from the 7th floor. The level is no different than any other room. Do not pay for the upgrade. The only thing the upgrade was worth it was the private breakfast. Bartenders. Meh. The service was terrible. Even with tipping. Except for Patrick. He is the man. Often times two bartenders for three bars and the swim up at the same time. Can’t blame the guys for being slow on service so understaffed. Moldy shower. Stains on curtains. No outdoor cushions. This place will be great when it is completed. The beach is beautiful- clear and tons of free toys. Dinner was great at the Mexican and Black angus. The buffet was kinda average. Room service was also really nice. Need an improvement on coffee.

Had a great time.

Before our trip, we read the online reviews, a large proportion of which were negative. We resigned ourselves to a few days of mediocre food and slow service while on a great beach. We were pleasantly surprised. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The food was good. The service was good, particularly if you were friendly with the staff. The dinner at Cilantro was nice, and the filet at the Black Angus was cooked to perfection. A nicer wine selection would have been nice, but drinks were otherwise great. While many people reserved beach chairs at the crack of dawn, we never had a problem finding 2 side by side at any time during the day. The only issues we had were with the Rose island excursion and the airport transportation; both were booked through cheapcaribbean.com, and the company did not have our info. Despite this, they honored our reservations when shown the receipt. Rose Island is a great day trip if you get the chance.
