Average Family All-Inclusive

This was a last minute trip and Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach - An All-Inclusive Resort was selected principally because of availability and the desire for fresh grilled conch from the Bahamas. We wanted to treat ourselves this holiday and thought that a quick getaway, even if not 'perfect', would still be enjoyable. Having previously been to an family resort, we were prepared and somewhat expectant of children. Perhaps it was holiday cheer, perhaps a little empty nest feeling, but either way the children were not a problem or concern. Wyndham Fortuna (the name used by all the locals) had incredibly soft powdery sand and a clear ocean water. Unfortunately, the service, staff, room and amenities well either average or below average. 1. Public Facilities: The resorts facilities were dated, but mostly fine. After about a 20 minute drive from the airport you are at resort. You reach the guarded entrance which leads to the in check lobby. Check-in was simple, but the wait times were mystifying given there were three attendants and not a long line of guests. During check-in, the staff encourages you to use the room safe, but also advises that there is a $3 a day charge for its use. This makes no sense and I have never encountered such a charge before. But we selected the option nevertheless - read on to see how that worked out. The resort consists of two story buildings and we were the second level with a view of a courtyard and the ocean. The general grounds were well maintained, with 3 restaurants (a large buffet & two specialty). There are a 3 pools (1 full-sized and 2 kiddie) which were clean with lifeguard on duties during normal hours. There were interesting activities throughout the day at poolside. The resort had other amenities included, Tennis Court, on-site Dive Shop, Beach-side Trapeze, small disco, two convenience shops, free bicycles and a fitness center. 2. Private Facilities & Quarters The room was normal sized with a comfortable and very clean bed & linens (we thought it was new). The interior was pretty clean. The TV was only 28" and fixtures in the bathroom were dated. Unfortunately, the tile floor near the bathroom was constantly wet (with water coming up from the bottom). The room safe, that we had to pay to use, failed on the 3rd day - refusing to open. When we called, this did not seem to be an unusual occurrence. In fact, the front desk told us we would have to wait as the service person 'Had a lot of safes before ours that had to be serviced." Wow. Moreover, when the tech did come we observed him find the problem and then go to the next room and cannibalize its safe to fix ours (clearly leaving that room's next guest with a non-working safe). The Spa (by wife) was brand new and only open on its 3rd day. The owner and her daughter were wonderful. I selected the two masseuse treatment and was amazed at how synchronized everything occurred. I was enthralled by this multiple hour massage. I tried to convince my husband to try it to no avail. His loss. I am a Spa/Message regular at home and this was an amazing experience. The beach was great. Again the sand was exquisite. It does not suffer from seaweed or other ocean debris. Despite being a closed resort, the beach had a few locals who were walking through trying to sell trinkets or offering not legal entertainment. At night, there are large spot lights that obscure any pleasant evening walks and for the most part we felt pretty safe. 2. Staff The staff were semi-professional, but often not very pleasant. You did not encounter any issues at the bar, pool, or beach. But if you had to deal with the front desk, the customer desk or their 'club representatives', pleasant was not the usual description you would give. We did not feel as if efforts were being made to ensure you felt welcomed. Also, staff was not particularly helpful or pleasant with each other. A noted exception was the entertainment staff, some of whom, sat with us during one lunch and made it even more enjoyable. As for the 'club representatives' they are essentially doing high pressure sales tactics - even when you express your desire not to be disturbed. 3. Services There is No Room service. 4. Location The location is Freeport. You can take a 20 minute taxi ride ($15US) to the shopping area to have your shopping itch scratched. Junkanoo: This will be your everyday location and probably most used dinner location. This is all buffet style presentation. There was always a wide variety that made it possible to find something to your liking. No alcohol was available here, though the main bar was connected. Bamboo: This is a very small East Asian restaurant. The offerings are pretty much sushi inspired and slightly better tasting then you would expect. Viva Café: Italian fare, nice setting. Viva La Pizza: Homemade pizza's. Pretty romantic at night. Overall - This will work for a family vacation where you are primarily concerned with price, safety and accessibility of the beach. The administrative staff did not make you feel overly welcomed in comparison to the wait staff who appeared to make the effort to make your vacation enjoyable.

Beautiful Beach - Horrible Service

Pros: The beach and sand were perfect, so beautiful and very clean and well-maintained. The food was delicious and there was a wide variety every single day. Cons: I have been to over 17 all-inclusive resorts and this resort had the absolute worst service. Every waitress, bartender, guest service representative, client relations, all were unhappy, disrespectful, and never smiled. Our family tips constantly, at every meal, for every drink, to the luggage handlers, and housekeepers and nobody said thank you or appreciated the tip so after a few days we stopped. The staff refuses to do anything extra for you, no extra bottles of water, no towels, the safe costs money, and there are very few activities. The website states that they have paintball everyday but it was only available one day a week and they had a program listed next to the bar but half of the activities were cancele everyday so our family was very bored. We had several issues with our rooms, it was 50 degrees with 30 MPH winds and my parents’ room’s heat broke down, the maintenance people came after a few hours and said the part to replace it will taken 2 weeks. The card reader then accidentally/incorrectly marked them as checked out so their card reader wouldn’t work. Our room’s card reader battery went out so we had to wait a few hours to get it fixed. I would not recommend this resort to anyone however the beaches were absolutely beautiful!

Have gone 3 times = AWESOME EVERY TIME!

I love this place! The people and staff are very friendly and I feel like they treat you like friends/family. The only part I dread when I'm here is having to go home. I'm just a simple country fellow and to me this place is HIGH CLASS!

I would not recommend this resort to anybody. I understand the island is still recovering from a hurricane that devastated them in 2016 but that has no impact on this resorts standards and how they operate on a daily basis. There is only a couple of activities that you can sign up for and even those are only done one day a week (such as paintball, 6 people have to sign up and its for one hour only on Tuesday) The Trapeze is a five minute activity and its over. The resort itself doesn't have anything going on except one 45 minute show that is put on nightly at 9:30 pm. You only get one bottle water in your room for your entire stay, if you want more you have to buy it from the gift shop. They don't allow you to get fresh beach towels after 5 pm or before 8 am. The beds are very uncomfortable and lumpy. The meals are nothing to talk about either the food has no flavor to it at all. The bars were out of campaign for two days, out of milk for three days and out of mint all week. Half the drinks on their menu couldn't even be made to these outages.
