Nice Resort but Overall Unpleasant Staff

My cousin and I spent four nights at this resort for my birthday (12/28/2017-1/1/2018). The resort is beautiful and the entertainment is fantastic. Below are a list of my pros and cons: Pros: Beautiful Resort; Great Entertainment; Great Activities Cons: Mediocre Food; Majority staff were more pleasant to Caucasian guests, than African American guests within the resort and on excursions (rather disappointing and offensive); shuttles REALLY OVERCHARGE to take you to different places outside of the resort (i.e. a 20-minute ride which costs locals $2 U.S. dollars, costs tourists $20 U.S. dollars … that’s x10)

Disappointed!

This was our honeymoon trip. We decided to go back to Riu Reggae (we were there last year) because we did not want surprises... but we were surprised and not in a good way... I was very disappointed, first with CheapCaribean, the agent, who made the reservation, did not tell us that we had to bring our marriage certificate to "prove" that it was our honeymoon....so no room upgrade. I even called Cheapcaribean before we left to make sure they had the note about being our honeymoon on our resort reservation... No one told us anything... The other big change we found in Jamaica is one that is a real bummer and will make us look for other places to go... We have been going to Jamaica for last 3 years for 3 main reasons: the people, the beauty of the place, and most importantly their policy for cigarette smoking (smoking restricted to a area in front of the lobby--away from everything else). I am VERY allergic to cigarette smoke, it is not just a dislike for the thing, I have trouble breathing, get very congested and with a strong headache. Well, we found out that they changed the rules for smoking. They now assigned a large area to smoking close to where they do their night shows, between 2 of the bars, close to the beach and worse, in the way to our room... AWFUL!!! Needless to say, that now there is smoking everywhere because people abuse the rules... there were people smoking on the beach, and outside the smoke designated area. There were some efforts from the resort personnel to enforce the restriction but these efforts were not effective.... I am sad to say that was our last trip to Jamaica, or at least to the RIU resorts there....I still love the people from Jamaica and the place still very beautiful... Thanks.

For the young, ravers and the party hardees

Riu Reggae is one of three Riu resorts, side by side, in Montego Bay. My Riu Reggae experience started on New Years Eve where they had entertainment till 2am. The next day was followed by a daytime foam party in the pool... these two events basically summed up the vibe If you’re someone who snacks all day vs eating meals, then this resort will not be good for you. In saying so, the meal options were great (Jamaican and global) and there was never an excessive queue for any of the restaurants. Huge shoutout to the water sports and activities centre. Sheldon, as well as the other staff, looked after my sailing/ SUP and kayaking needs. I might me the only one who worked out on a water craft every morning :) They also can help you book boozy sunset cruises (not my thing) and certified scuba dives (definitely my thing). On that note, the certification and diving prices are actually very competitive vs US. I really enjoyed my time here. The beach front was not that wide but it’s not hard to find a space if you want some quiet. Is definitely worth a return trip

Sunset on final night That’s a lot of liquor. Just in my room!

**Do Not Even Think About It..I Will Tell U Why**

This resort (no other resort) experienced flooding. It caused mud and other misc to be everywhere. Rather than contacting customers and cancelling or providing another resort, they chose to say nothing. We went to the pool right away. They were all closed. We came back around noon for the water aerobics. At 12:05, they announced they were cancelled. No staff/management told us there was a sister resort 5 minutes away and we could use that pool free. Another patron told us on the 2nd day in the afternoon. We walked 12 minutes via sand to get there. I was very nice, but it was a family friendly resort, so kids were everywhere. And their alcohol selection was of lesser quality and choice than our resort. The next day we find out from a patron that they are providing free shuttle to the sister resort. No communication from staff about this. When we approached the staff member, he said "yea, but you still have to tip." Wow. Seriously. At Reggae, there was mud and a wet mess everywhere around the resort. Staff was digging up the mud. The foliage was muddy. There was dead/muddy foliage laying around on the ground. The main entrance into the resort was closed and people were trying to clean up the mess/mud. The garden view consists of trees and a ravine. There was no pool open the entire time, except a very small area around the bar. It was at times packed with people since it was the only water available. Then intermittently, there was a back flow of brown flumes of disgust/mud? would gush into the small bar pool water. Everyone would make a mad dash to get out. Then that pool might be closed for 12-15 hours or long after the back flow events. NEVER did management or staff communicate what had happened, what was going on, or anything they were willing to do to accommodate the situation. Who goes to a resort and not want to be in water? Was TERRIBLE. Now on the good side, in general the staff was pretty nice and service was good at the restaurants. The food was better here than at the other 2 resorts we have been to. The entertainment was okay. First night was a little raunchy but good quality. The rest of the nights were just ok. But compared to other resort food, we were satisfied Who made the BAD decision to not communicate at all to customers??
