Gorgeous Resort

This was our first time staying at Melia Punta Cana Beach Resort. We were impressed with the perfectly groomed grounds and clean facilities. The resort was massive, so even though it was fully booked our whole stay we rarely had to wait for service and never had a hard time finding a perfect spot on the beach. The staff overall was nice, helpful, and patient with the language barrier. There were a few employees who you could tell were uninterested in helping but that was the minority. The food options were plenty for all meals but the dinner restaurants food quality was low. We often found ourselves unimpressed with the dinners and stopped by the buffet on our way back to the room the get something different. Some advice for a future traveler - read the fine print. We thought we had booked a suite with a King size bed but arrived and were forced into a room with two twin beds and could not be moved or upgraded. Doesn't hurt to call the resort directly in advance to confirm the small things. I would go here again with friends!

Three weeks after open

I stayed with my partner at the newly opened Melia Punta Cana Beach Resort for 10 days in January 2019. The resort spent the last year renovating and rebranding and had reopened officially 3 weeks before we arrived. This is not to be confused with either Melia Caribe Tropical All Inclusive or The Level at Melia Caribe Beach. We were very confused when booking it because of these changes. Melia Caribe Tropical All Inclusive still exists and it makes up half of this resort, it is the family friendly side, while The Level at Melia Caribe Beach was rebranded as Melia Punta Cana Beach Resort. When you stay at either resort you have access to both grounds. We assumed there would be some sort of fence dividing the resorts but this was not the case. While we booked Melia Punta Cana Beach Resort because it was marketed as Adults Only I feel it was a bit disingenuous as our room was located next to families with children and we had a view of the kids friendly pool. The week we attended however was during school season so there was a minimal of kids around, your milage may vary depending on the time of year you arrive. There are a couple of categories between the the resorts, The Level (adults only), The Level for Everyone (Family), and Standard. We stayed at the Level for Adults Only, which denotes the room you receive. Being in the Level also provided us access to a private pool, private bar, and private restaurant which served breakfast/lunch (Buffet), and dinner ala carte. The Level only bars did feature some higher shelf liquor (grey goose, johnny walker red, etc) but all bars had a fairly impressive selection. I cannot speak to the rooms that were not part of the Level because we never got a chance to see them. As to Level perks. The room itself was very nice, completely sealed and well AC'ed. We were on the third floor of building 50, which meant stairs, but we didn't mind burning some extra calories at all. The room had a very nice tiled shower, which was clean with great pressure and tons of hot water. It also featured a 4 person hot tub in the room. There does not appear to be any other hot tubs on the property. The mini bar in the room was very lacking, it contained some coke, sprite, bottled water, and 4 mini cans of coors light, and a single inexplicable small bag of peanuts. The Level also offers room service included from 6pm to 10pm, the menu varied but was fairly limited. Our room featured a nice balcony which overlooked the Level for everyone pool, we were also very close to the Rivera (the Level only restaurant). The room was kept very clean and we had no issues with it. Very nice accommodations for sure. The resort itself is massive. Whoever is in charge of grounds keeping is doing an amazing job, I have never seen such well kept outdoor areas. They do provide roaming golf carts as well as a shuttle service around the resort, sticking out your thumb will get you a pretty quick pickup. Additionally you can call the front desk and request a cart. We chose to walk most of the time, to help fight the calories from food and drink. The beach was on the far side from our rooms and was maybe 1/3 of a mile walk each way. All the breakfast/lunch places were close to the beach (except the level only Rivera), while all the dinner places were on the far side with the lobbies. This setup seems to cause the flow of people to end up at the beach/pools all day and at the lobbies/bars/restaurants all night, which is a pretty good system. It did seem like a lot of wasted eating space as none of the breakfast/lunch places were open for dinner. The beach was in very good shape, this time of year there is a lot of seaweed that washes up. The staff was fairly continuously removing it, but you would still end up needing to cross a couple of feet of it on your way to the water. There was an adequate number of chairs on the beach and the pool, some of the covered areas did fill up earlier in the day, and a lot of people felt the need to mark the best spots with towels all day and never return. The resort could of done a better job about cleaning off clearly unused spots so others could use them. The sand on the beach is clean, soft, and doesnt get too hot in the sun. It was also very wide and long. They provided waiters who would wander around the beach and take drink orders, the service was fairly fast and professional. Some other reviewers warned us about being bothered by venders while on the beach, yes there were venders, but I dont feel they were aggressive or annoying. A simple no thank you and they were on their way, we never were woken up or pulled out of reading or anything by them. We took out hobbie cats (small sail boats) on several occasions, they are provided free of charge for an hour at a time. They recommend you book an appointment before hand but we never had any issues. They also had kayaks and snorkel equipment available. There were a number of venders who sold things such as catamaran rides, speed boats, parasailing, etc. We did not partake in any of those but it looked like a lot of people did and enjoyed themselves. There are two very large pools and several smaller pools. One of them is adults only the other is family friendly. Both pools are absolutely massive with fountains and various areas of difference depth and design. Each had their own swim up pool bar as well. The pools were kept very clean and not overly busy. A lot of the reviews talked about how bad the food was, we found this not to be the case at all. Me and my partner enjoy 5 star dining at home and rarely expect it at an all inclusive resort but we know what good food is, as well as what bad food is. The food here is not going to be 5 stars, but some of it definitely approaches 4 stars, the bulk of it however was average or better. The resort offered 4 breakfast and lunch buffets as well as beach grills. We found the buffets to be the most lackluster of the food at the resort. They werent bad by any means but there clearly wasnt a lot of passion in the breakfast/lunch area. You can get everything you expect, breakfast omelets made to order, fresh fish on the grill, fruits and veggies, tons of meat options, breads, cheeses, deserts, etc. They were good but we always ate light in order to look forward to dinner. Dinner is where this resort shined. When we attended two of the dinner places had not yet opened from renovations, but we still felt like we almost had too many options. Mosaico an adults only buffet, while decent we felt it didnt shine to much. Muoi is their adult only Asian fusion place, this was one of our favorite places the food was excellent and was worth repeat trips throughout the week. Casa Nostra was their Italian place and was the best of all the restaurants, their wood fire pizza was amazing as well as everything else, we wished we could eaten here even more often. Capri is a Mediterranean restaurant and had some excellent options definitely above average. They had a Dominican place which I cannot recall the name of which was also fantastic, we looked up some of the recipes when we got home to make them for ourselves. La Hacienda was their Mexican place which we did not care for too much. Likewise with their American grill. We were very excited to go their French restaurant but felt the execution on the dishes was lacking a little. All in all the dinners were excellent. We also went on 10 scuba trips through Scuba Caribe which had a shack on their beach but is not part of the resort. The diving in the area is average, it doesnt compare with places like Cozumel but we had some good trips. They had a number of wrecks as well as caves we were able to explore. They charged us $400 for 10 dives per person. The dive masters we dove with were friendly and excellent. The boat will pick you up right on the beach and they even held onto our personal gear overnight and cleaned it for us. Some items that I believe can be improved. Very little information was given to us upon checkin, we received a single two sided paper with a map. A lot of info on the map wasnt accurate and the Level Checkin staff were rude to us when we asked any questions. They should provide much more information on the restaurants and bars as well as activities. It took us a good three days to get a hang of the place and feel like we understood what was going on. I was surprised that the check in was so poor since it is the first impression you have of the resort. The buffets could use some improvement, the food is uninspired and repetitive. While the staff was excellent they had absolutely no training outside of their areas, bartenders couldnt tell us were the nearest bathroom was, if you asked a hostess where another restaurant was they could not answer, if you asked what time dinner service started from a waiter they had no idea. Some cross training would be very helpful. Even when we were leaving the front desk didnt know where our arranged transport would be and had us wait in the wrong lobby which got us scolded by the shuttle driver. This was our first time in a Melia property and we were a bit hesitant from other reviews of other properties, however we found that it lived up to our expectations and more, we will happily return to another one of their properties in the future.

Could use some work

We had a good time but the rooms are kind of beaten up. The beach experience wasn’t great as it was nearly impossible to relax when there are people trying to pedal products and excursions the entire time and they won’t takw no for an answer. We ordered room service later at night and waited an hour and a half and it never came. The employees are more than welcoming and they definitely made it worth our time and money. We were also bothered while eating breakfast every day by someone trying to get us to eat supper at a restaurant that was not part of the all inclusive package. Once at the pool we were approached about buying a photo package. That was frustrating as we felt we couldn’t get away from people trying to sell to us. If they could just make stricter policies about people trying to sell us everything all times of the day, it would have been much more enjoyable. We only hit the beach twice on a 5 day stay because it was so annoying to keep being bombarded with sales pitches.
