A coconut-palmed lined beach that's kissed by electrically blue aquamarine waves. A personal butler and 24-hour room service. Unlimited noshing on gourmet food and drinks. How's that for a dream vacay? Thought so. But there's oh-so much more. At sea, you get one hour of free kayaking, paddle surfing and snorkeling. On land, you can play tennis, hop on a mountain bike, or try your hand at Pantanque. You also have access to other Luxury Bahia Principe hotels and Grand Bahia Principe hotels in the complex. Other goodies include diving lessons in the pool and access to five swingin' golf courses. All of this awesome takes place on one of the most famous sandy spots on the planet, Bavaro Beach.

worst trip ever
My son got sick - infected with a nasty mouth/foot/hand disease , and we end up paying for it .
The resort overall is very nice! Lots of hotels and places to wander around within the resort. Our only issue with our hotel was the food; it was not appealing and did not taste good. We ate all 3 meals at the buffet each day and both my boyfriend and I got sick from the food at least once each. The staff are very friendly, however there are many people at the resort each day pushing you to book excursions, massages, etc. We had a nice stay and I would recommend this hotel, but would recommend trying to make reservations at one of the one site restaurants

Is the hotel close to the major airport. Also does the cost include transportation from and to the airport?
6 years, 73 months ago
Jr
The resort is located 30 minutes away from Punta Cana Airport. The roundtrip airport transfer service is an additional charge which can be added during the booking of your vacation package.
MariaCC
The hotel is about 30 minutes from the hotel. Transportation is not included. Taxi is about $40 each way. I highly recommend choosing another resort- specifically Dreams Punta Cana.
KarenDawson
The hotel is not that close to the airport. But we purchased the ride to and from for like $20 and it was well worth it. Very easy to get back and forth and to feel safe.
DCVacationer888
the hotel is about 15-20 min to airport and we did travel voucher when booking trip on cheapcarribean so we didn't have to worry about transportation to resort and back to airport.
guy440
It is about 30-40 minutes. We took a taxi to and from on our own and it was best deal ...four of us and flat price of $40 each way (we tipped about $8 on top of that and the drivers were so appreciative). After you come through Customs just following exit/taxi signs and they are lined up. Confirm price w driver. On way back the hotel will call a taxi for you.
Avatar
The airport is about 30-40 minutes away. We had purchased "shared transportation" when we booked our trip which was very inexpensive.
RosieGirl
About 20 mins from airport and you can pay for a taxi when you get there or you can do it online with cheap carribean when you buy your trip, it will be an option at the end
LMarie
The hotel is approximately 30 minutes away, all of them are, so you have to take a taxi or bus to get there. The cost for the bus is about $10 per person, or you can take a taxi for about $40. Either way, if you book ahead of time with the travel agency or just find a taxi at the airport, it will cost you about the same if you are traveling w/ 4 people. The only difference is you might want to tip higher for the taxi than you would for the bus. Also, the bus doesn't just go directly to your hotel, it makes other stops too! Next time I think we will just pick up a taxi once we get there, as you go more directly to your hotel. Be sure to arrange the price ahead of time with the taxi driver before you get in! All hotels are near each other, so the price should be around $40.
JulieGNP
It's about 1/2 hour from the airport. You can select transportation when you process your trip. I would recommend the private transport. Well worth the money.
Briggo
The resort is about 20-30 minutes away. The transfer which was included in our package was very easy both ways. No confusion- air conditioned buses- safe drivers.
artsymoma
Punta Cana Airport is in Punta Cana and the majority of the resorts are in Bavaro which is a bout 35 minutes away from the airport.
Transportation is not included in the price but they offer you a shuttle bus service for a minimal fee to different resorts.

are kids allowed in the large pools? what time do the pools close5 answers
I will have our daughters 10 &12. Are they restricted to where they can swim? Are kids allowed to attend the shows? Any hot tubs? What time do the pools close?

chicago
For the answers to these questions, please contact the hotel directly at: 1-809-552-1444, or via email at: info.esmeralda@bahia-principe.com for the most up-to-date information.
WILLCC
There is only 1 adult pool that kids aren't allowed in and it's small and secluded. Kids are absolutely welcome in the 2 big pools and they even have music and staff set up for entertainment at the pool in the afternoon! Pools close at 6 or 7 though, which surprised us but the beach/ocean is literally right there and it's open.
Ronda
There are not really an restrictions that I was aware of. There were a lot of children in the pool. They do have 1 hot tub. All the pools close at 6pm.
Annelita
No! All the pools at Esmeralda are child friendly.
Bethd
Yes they are allowed in the large pools no restrictions and to the night shows too. I believe the pools close at 7 pm but I still saw some people in the sometimes a little after.

USA
Domestic liquor and beer are provided at this resort. There will be some, international liquor available, but its mostly local DR brands.
KristenCC
Absolute vodka was what I had all week, they are not stingy with the drinks. US name brand alcohol is a no, el Presidente beer.
Ronda
They carry some top shelf liquors, mostly whisky. The beer served was local to the best of my memory
SunnyBeachBunny
No.

The resort offers a buffet, a la carte restaurant and a snack bar. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.

Each resort has several restaurants ... but restaurant dining and times are assigned by the resort. Very difficult, if impossible, to eat at a restaurant of your choice.

3 years, 45 months ago
Elvis
Yes, the Italian one is the only specialty restaurant offered.
bthornton
You can make reservations at any of the Bahia restaurants - there are many! The Italian and Seaford and Steak are the only ones in the Esmeralda, but you can reserve at any of the restaurants on the shared properties. Check with the concierge on Day 1, as all require reservations, but you can and should reserve for the whole trip in advance.
DRGirl999
There are many places to eat at Esmeralda all have a buffet but if you want a sit down meal there is an Italian place, Bella, and Takado (I think this is correct) is an Asian place. Plus there is a steakhouse and Tex Mex at the Punta Cana resort which is walkable or a very short tram ride. There are others, I just can't remember them all

Dinner reservations for the a la carte restaurants can be made on arrival with the hotel's guest services. They do not usually accept dinner reservations in advance. If booking the Luxury you would have access to the restaurants at the regular Grand Bahia as well.
CCGreg
Yes you can, and yes you can go to other bahia resorts,
BestVacation2017
Yes you can. We made all of ours for the whole week the first day we got there. You can go to all the resorts' restaurants if you're staying at Esmeralda.

Bathroom Privacy??5 answers
I am traveling with my adult son to the Esmeralda on 10/15. I read in a review that there is no privacy in the bathroom - that the shower is glass and there is a window open from the shower right into the bedroom. To my knowledge, we are in the family section, not adults only. Uh oh. Is this true??
3 years, 38 months ago
musicgirl
The bathroom is it's own separate room with a glass shower that is half transparent, half translucent. There is a window from the bathroom to the bedroom, but it does have blinds you can close.
JeannieCC
There are frosted glass doors to the toilet and shower and the windowed wall that separates the bathroom from the rest of the room has a curtain for privacy.
Vaca2017
In my room and in all the rooms that my friends stayed in, there was a large picture window in a partition wall separating the bathroom area from the sleeping area. There are curtains over this window, but oddly enough the curtains are on the OUTSIDE of the bathroom. As in, someone in the bedroom could move the curtains and have full view of the bathroom. And you are correct, there is a clear glass shower door.
TheAAW
Hi, we just came back a couple of weeks ago and to our surprise, it's is in fact glass doors to shower. The toilet door is not so transparent. There's a window and my kids (6&4) were so noisy that they kept opening the curtains to see in the bathroom. So, I had to ship them to my in-laws for privacy who were a few doors down the hallway.
JudyTej
There's a curtain to close for the window if you want privacy.

TimCC
Not incredibly quiet. It's like a normal ocean sounding shore. Sitting all the way back in the lounge chairs you're still able to hear from quite the distance, but it's not overbearing. The waves are present, but not huge.
Algis
We were there for eight days and the waves did not stop.

Excursions Cost5 answers
Anyone have any knowledge about how much excursions cost? Average range? Best one to go on?
2 years, 32 months ago
Indiana
Excursions can range anywhere from $80 to $200pp. They have everything from horseback riding, city tours, deep-sea fishing, etc so what would be best to go on is based on personal opinion and what most interests you.
JeannieCC
A really good one is the party boat if you're interested in that kind of stuff. You'll first do snorkeling and then have drinks and food on the boat while there's music being played. The cost per person is $100.
Aj7373
The ones we looked at were 80-150. We went on the Reef Excursion. Waste of money and really regret it. I heard other guests really liked some of the excursions, I guess we just chose wrong :(
Crystyle
They range starting at about $30 a person. We took one called the Juanillo VIP Scape Park excursion for $169 a person and it was the best! We had a great time. We also took one to Manatee Park for our son and it was fun, I would recommend it for kids. That one was $35 a person.
Matan
We did the Outback excursion and it ran ~$90/adult and ~$45/child. Hotel pick up at 8:30a and back around 4:00p. Our family found it very entertaining. I strongly suggest that you read Trip Advisor reviews so that you know what to expect -- and if you're cool with those things, then you'll have a great time. For example, on this particular tour you see a typical DR home, coconut production, cocoa production, coffee production, rum production, lunch at the mountain top, see a few local pets (iguanas, pigs), and end with a 45-min visit to Macao Beach. They will have items for sell at each spot as related to what you learned about (e.g., cigars, rum, coconut oil, coffee). For us it was great, as we wanted to buy a few things and it was easy to purchase what you saw (e.g., DR cigar, local wine, t-shirt). The vendors are not pushy. I'd say 70% of the people bought something. Folks that expect a 100% authentic tour would be let down -- but that would be an unrealistic expectation imho. Our family would score this excursion a 9 out of 10 -- thoroughly enjoyed it. We LOVED Macao Beach -- absolutely gorgeous and great swimming!!!!

Services for disabled unable to walk any distance4 answers
Are there golf cart rides to the tram or from the room to pool restaurants Beach and so services for the disabled unable to walk distances forth
2 years, 31 months ago
Franny
Please check with the resort directly for shuttle services. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.
TimCC
Yes, there is a shuttle golf cart between the buildings. Still walking in required from room to pool or beach to main lobby. Would suggest wheelchair or scooter.
CasualTraveler0001
Yes, there is a tram service that connects the various resorts. However, you will do a good bit of walking to reach the various stops on the line. For example, there is one that encircles the full resort and one that runs up the middle. So once you're off the tram, you have to walk a good ways to the place you are going (e.g., pool, room, restaurant). There is not direct golf cart service from any point to any point, it's more like mass transit movement.
Sessoms
Yes, they have golf carts all over the resort.

Considering Ambar Blue or Esmeralda... Can you use all the facilities/pools etc at the other resorts if you stay at the Esmeralda or does that perk only apply if you stay at the Ambar (Adults Only)

Stay at 1, Play at 6 - access to facilities and services at Grand Bahia Principe Turquesa, Grand Bahia Principe Punta Cana, Grand Bahia Principe Bavaro, Luxury Bahia Principe Ambar Blue (adults only) and Luxury Bahia Principe Ambar Green (adults only), excluding main buffet restaurants. If you have any further questions, you may contact the resort directly or call and speak to one of our Beachologists at 1-800-915-2322.

The only restriction between the resorts is using the main buffets. If you stay in Esmeralda you can use any of the pools, a la carte restaurants, or snack bars at any of the other resorts. Everything is restricted from the fantasia as well if you are not staying there. Hope this helps!
Kgarr
Hi, Esmeralda only allows you access to Gran Bahia Punta Cana and Bavaro not Fantasia and Ambar.
JudyTej
We stayed at Esmeralda and had access to all resorts. I believe Fantasia is the one with the most perks such as a private restaurant on the beach. I think Esmeralda and Fantasia are the nicest of the 6.

Just returned from Esmerelda this week. My understanding is that you can go anywhere except Fantasia. However note that some of the resorts are adult-only, so you can't take kids to those restaurants.
