Goodby

The trip was a disaster. Check in was a pain in the neck.Premium restaurant was another low. This was our 45th Anniversary wanted something nice, no room.We set trip up last year, Wi-Fi very bad they wanted you to buy the premium package. Was bullied in lobby by a 30 something, bartender where oblivious. Not going back there any time soon. This wasn't our first time there, never had any problem, with restaurant, food, pool, service.

I took my big family on this 2017 spring break to Grand Bahia Principe Punta Cana. Each service members at Grand Bahia Principe was fantastic, helpful, and friendly. Layout of the resort was terrible,, food was not that great. We were sick of the food after the second days but really have other choice. Room is really old, dirty, and mold. We will never go back to this place.

Great first experience

Positive: This was the first time we took a vacation to an all-inclusive resort. We loved it and can't stop talking about it. We were able to relax and enjoy every moment of our trip. We plan to revisit this resort again next year. Negative: Servers gave exceptional service only when you tipped them well. Otherwise you had to Flag them down. Grand Bahia Principe Resort Sales people constantly approached us pressuring us to visit and purchase Time-share vacation packages with Grand Bahia Principe Resort. We did meet with a sales rep and what was said would only be a 1 hour long presentation took over 3 hours. I huge waste of our time to enjoy our last day of our vacation.

Rates - we got a decent rate on a room in the Punta Cana section of the Grand Bahia Principe. Each side of our building had six rooms on each floor so you will occasionally hear other guests talking or slamming doors. Our room was on the third floor and there were no elevators. Location - we have been to all-inclusives six times, this was our second time to Punta Cana, first time at a Bahia Principe. We had a shared bus transportation from the Punta Cana airport and were at the resort within a half hour. The beach was beautiful with soft sand and you could walk for miles in each direction. We swam in the ocean every day. The resort itself is long and narrow, 6/10 mile from the lobby to the beach. We walked everywhere, 13-16,000 steps per day; most folks rode the golf cart 'shuttles' which ran continuously and stopped at frequent bus stops. Check-in time is 3pm, and we arrived around 1pm, so our room wasn’t ready. We did receive a welcome beverage and a wrist band so we could get a meal at the buffet and drinks. We went back to the lobby at 3pm and were able to check in with no wait. After a brief orientation, we were loaded into a golf cart with our luggage and taken to our room. Pools - There were two pools in the Punta Cana section, both with swim up bars and towel service. There is also a very nice pool at the beach. We spent our mornings at the beach and our afternoons at the pool near our building. There are other pools on the property that are only accessible to premium or privilege guests. Room - we were in the Punta Cana section (building 15), our room contained a king bed & daybed with a small balcony facing the pool. Pool activities were shut down at 5:30pm each day. We were able to sit out on our balcony (two chairs and small table) in the evening, and it was very peaceful. The room was clean and everything was functional. We didn’t use the beverages (beer and pop) in the minibar, but did use the coffee and two large bottles of water, which were replaced daily. The shower was in the big jacuzzi tub, which required great care climbing in and out. One member of our party had a difficult time with their room keys not working, which took 3 trips to the front desk and 3 visits by maintenance to resolve the issue with the door mechanism. **Each room is equipped with energy-saving technology for turning off the lights and power in a guest room. Insert your hotel room key card in the wall slot upon entering the room and the lights can be turned on. Remove the room key upon departing and the power automatically goes off, including air conditioning and refrigerator, so don’t expect things to be cold. Service - all of the staff were friendly, but very busy. Seating was quick both at the buffet and also the specialty restaurants. There was very limited wait staff on the beach, we usually went to one of the bars around the beach pool to get our own drinks and there was always a lineup. The all-inclusive beer was El Presidente, liquors were Dominican Republic brand, premium brands available for additional charge. More than once they were ‘out’ of the liquor or juice we requested. Chaises - we're early risers, so we were able to get chairs in the shade at the beach, but most days all of the shade chairs were 'claimed' by 8:00 am. The chairs are so crowded at the beach, that in some areas there was little to no walkway between rows of chairs. All of the chairs at the beach pool were taken by 8am, so after lunch each day we moved back to the pool near our room. Most chairs in the shade around this pool were taken by then, but we would claim a chair in the sun, get a drink at the swim up bar and wait for chairs to open up. Pools and pool bars closed at 5:30pm. Food - Breakfast--we ate at the Orquidea International Buffet-fresh and whatever you wanted, 2 chefs cooking eggs and omelets. Lunch--because we spent our days at the beach, we ate at the pool restaurant (swimsuits, cover up and sandals ok) where there was chicken, fish, hot dogs and hamburgers, fries, soup, chips, vegetables, salad, fruit. This restaurant didn’t open until 12:30 each day and was very crowded, with long lines to get to the food. By 1pm there was no place to sit. Dinner--usually the Orquidea International Buffet, which served a large variety of good food, cooked fresh, and replenished often. Some nights there was a lineup to get in. We were only allowed three specialty restaurants, and we chose: Mikado Japanese Restaurant, traditional Tepanyaki dinner show-fun and tasty! Capriccio Restaurant, traditional Italian cuisine, good but nothing special. El Pescador Restaurant, Fresh Mediterranean, the steak I had was good. We liked that you could choose your own soups, salads, desserts from their buffets. You can’t reserve a specialty restaurant until you have a room number, and then only when guest services opened at 4 (or using their phone app). Even though we reserved on our arrival day for the last three nights of our 6-day stay, the earliest seatings we could get was 9:15, 9:30, and 9:45! Free WiFi - I guess it’s true that you get what you pay for. I was only able to get the free wifi (only available in the lobby) to work well enough, long enough on two different occasions to accomplish anything, despite trying at least twice each day. Entertainment - We enjoyed the music in the lobby in the evenings, but the only show we attended was Michael Jackson (which was great), because our dinner reservations interfered. The theater was too crowded to get in and get seats, we ended up sitting along the side walkway. Activities - we're not joiners, but we did see stretching, yoga, zumba, dancing, beach volleyball, bocce ball and horseshoes, etc on the beach, but we never saw any organized events at our pool. We enjoyed our stay, but will probably not go back. It was just too crowded.

What's to Love

It's an all-inclusive, all fun-in-the-sun hot spot for all ages.

Elongating on Bavaro Beach, named one of the top beaches on the planet by UNESCO.

Feeling the softness of your luscious skin after the oats and honey treatment at the spa.

Hydro-massage bathtub in the rooms - put in some bubbles and you're golden.

What We'd Change

Though wandering through the solariums and tropical gardens on the way to the beach can be fun, it's also quite a walk! Thankfully, the resort has free shuttles.

Why You Should Go

It's 25 minutes from the airport. You'll smell the salt of the sea very soon.

Your little urchins can splash around all day (every day) at the children's water park.
