Grab Your Clubs and Swing For the Caribbean!

by Kevin Patterson

With the bitterness of winter lingering in the air, it's time to get out of the cold and head for paradise. If you're like me, then you're not a big fan of frozen fairways or icy ponds. So forget about waiting for the ice to melt, let's head out and check out some of the best destinations for your golf getaway.

Our first stop takes us to three classic courses at Casa de Campo in the beautiful La Romana in the Dominican Republic. The legendary "Teeth of the Dog" course, designed by world-renowned golf course designer Pete Dye, is a beautiful and challenging course that every golfer should enjoy at least once. This par 72, 7,000 yard long course offers incredibly stunning views of the ocean and Dominican landscape. Another course masterfully crafted by Pete Dye is the Dye Fore. Stretching an incredible 7,740 yards, this is a course you just can't look away from. The Dye Fore features gorgeous views of the Dominican mountains, Caribbean Sea, and seven gorgeous cliff-side holes that drop 300 feet to the Chavon River below. Our last course in the Dominican Republic, and my personal favorite, is the Punta Espada in Cap Cana. Designed by the PGA legend Jack Nicklaus, Punta Espada offers incredible views of the Caribbean, with eight holes that play along and over the sea. This course is decorated with emerald fairways and perfect greens, making it a must play for golfers everywhere.

The next destination on our list is Los Cabos, Mexico. There are plenty of great places to golf in this popular destination, but the course that will really catch your eye is the Cabo del Sol Ocean Course in Cabo San Lucas. It's no surprise that this course was designed by Jack Nicklaus because it's absolutely breathtaking. The Cabo del Sol Ocean Course showcases captivating views of mountains, desert, and the beautiful azul backdrop of the Sea of Cortez that displays a gorgeous contrast you won't find anywhere else. The best part of this course is the signature 17th hole, it tees off from a cliff top, requiring a precise hit over a cove to a green naturally shaped by rock outcroppings from the Sea of Cortez.

Our last, but certainly not least, golf destination takes us to Puerto Rico. With great places to golf such as Dorado Beach and the Trump International Golf Club, it's easy to label Puerto Rico as one of the best golf destinations in the world. Dorado Beach's East Course is truly something to behold. Originally designed by Robert Trent Jones, recently restored by his son Robert Trent Jones II, this masterpiece features 15 holes with panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean with a beautiful lush landscape. The Trump International Course is also a must play. Designed by PGA tour professional Tom Kite, this course will take you through picturesque views, rolling hills, and over lakes and water ways.
